Er hat die Landtagswahl im Oktober überzeugend gewonnen und dann Schluss gemacht mit Schwarz-Grün.

Seitdem regiert er in Hessen fast ohne Widerspruch mit der SPD.

Und das ist für Hessen deshalb interessant, weil das zweitgrößte Werk in Baunatal ist und auch dort Angst herrscht.

Ihr Wirtschaftsminister Kave Mansuri war in der Woche bei der Betriebsversammlung und hat da Folgendes gesagt.

Wir sind im engen Austausch mit VW immer schon sowohl mit der Belegschaft als auch mit dem Management.

Und werden uns jetzt anschauen, was wir tun können, was konkret möglicherweise auch am Standort getan werden muss.

Und trotzdem will ich sagen, macht uns das natürlich große Sorgen.

We are currently experiencing a wounded economy, and that is reflected everywhere.

Und deswegen müssen wir wie sonst noch nie zuvor auch darüber sprechen, ob wir an der einen oder anderen Stelle unterstützen müssen.

Wir haben beispielsweise, wenn Sie sich anschauen, den Pharma-Standort stark unterstützt.

Und in solche Gespräche werden wir jetzt auch eintreten müssen.

Ein Punkt, den wir ja auch im Koalitionsvertrag stehen haben, ist beispielsweise der Hessenfonds, der natürlich in einer solchen Situation zum Zuge kommen kann.

Aber da komme ich nochmal. Wirklich Steuergelder für VW, das Milliarden erwirtschaftet?

Ein anderes aktuelles Thema, die Wahlen in Sachsen und in Thüringen vom vergangenen Wochenende, die ja doch die Republik erschüttert haben.

Die CDU sieht sich da als Wahlsiegerin, möchte gerne in beiden Bundesländern den Ministerpräsidenten stellen.

Jetzt steht die CDU aber kurz davor, mit dem Bündnis Sarah Wagenknecht zu paktieren, mit der ehemaligen Chefin der kommunistischen Plattform.

Man könnte so sagen, das sind die wahren Erben der SED. Möchten Sie dabei zuschauen, Herr Rhein?

Wir sind die einzig verbliebene Kraft der Mitte.

We are the only remaining force of the center.

Die demokratische starke Kraft der Mitte als Union. Wirklich das Bollwerk.

Und deswegen ist es aus meiner Sicht jetzt nichts anderes als verantwortungsvoll zu schauen, was können wir mit wem jetzt machen,

And that is why, from my perspective, it is now nothing other than responsible to look at what we can do with whom now.

damit wir aus der Mitte heraus, und das ist mir so wichtig, aus der Mitte heraus diese beiden wichtigen Länder führen können als Union.

So that we can lead these two important countries as a union from the center, and that is very important to me.

Und dafür werden jetzt Gespräche geführt. In der Tat auch mit diesem Bündnis Sarah Wagenknecht.

Wir müssen uns anschauen, was wollen die eigentlich politisch? Was können sie landespolitisch?

We need to look at what they actually want politically. What can they do at the state level?

Was sind die Kandidaten, die da möglicherweise eine Rolle spielen?

What are the candidates that may play a role there?

Aber eins kann ich Ihnen sagen, Frau Müller, das macht uns keinen Spaß und es ist für meine Partei und auch für mich persönlich sehr schwierig.

But one thing I can tell you, Ms. Müller, is that it’s not fun for us, and it is very difficult for my party and for me personally.

Aber jetzt haben wir wirklich eine Aufgabe, unsere Freunde Mario Vogt und Michael Kretschmer zu unterstützen, dabei diese Länder wirklich ordentlich zu führen, dass es da wieder vorangehen kann.

But now we really have a task to support our friends Mario Vogt and Michael Kretschmer in leading these countries properly so that progress can be made again.

Innerhalb der CDU regt sich ja auch schon Widerstand gegen dieses geplanten Gespräche, Koalition, Bündnisse, was auch immer da am Ende bei rauskommt.

Within the CDU, there is already resistance to these planned talks, coalitions, alliances, or whatever it may ultimately result in.

Es gibt da eine Liste.

Es gibt eine Liste von Menschen, die sagen, wir müssen auch einen Unvereinbarkeitsbeschluss machen und nicht mit diesem Bündnis Sarah Wagenknecht zusammenarbeiten.

There is a list of people who say we also need to make a resolution of incompatibility and not work with this alliance of Sarah Wagenknecht.

Da ist auch ein hessischer Politiker dabei, der Bürgermeister von Elthülle.

Zerreißt es nicht die CDU, wenn sie das machen?

Ich kann das gut nachvollziehen, dass man dabei Unbehagen hat. Ich habe dabei auch Unbehagen.

I can understand well that one has unease about it. I also feel unease about it.

Ich bin unter anderem wegen der Wiedervereinigung, wegen der Politik Helmut Kohls, wegen einer klaren Kante gegen Sozialismus in die CDU eingetreten.

I joined the CDU, among other reasons, because of the reunification, because of Helmut Kohl's politics, and because of a clear stance against socialism.

Also deswegen, ich kann das gut nachvollziehen.

That's why I can understand that very well.

Ich will es auch sehr deutlich sagen.

I want to say it very clearly as well.

Wir können uns doch jetzt nicht zurücklehnen und einfach die Dinge sich selbst überlassen und nicht dort sagen, wir wollen aus der Mitte heraus diese Länder führen.

We cannot just lean back now and leave things to themselves and not say that we want to lead these countries from the center.

Wir haben einen Auftrag gehalten als Union und den müssen wir annehmen.

We have upheld a commitment as a union and we must accept that.

Und deswegen müssen wir uns jetzt wenigstens anschauen, was möglich ist und was nicht möglich ist.

And that's why we need to at least take a look at what is possible and what is not possible.

Aber ich sage es nochmal, das Unbehagen kann ich verstehen und trotzdem muss man schauen, was geht.

But I'll say it again, I can understand the discomfort, and still, one must see what is possible.

Der Innenminister Roman Posek war die Woche sehr deutlich und sagte, er sieht die Demokratie in Deutschland vor einem Kipppunkt.

Interior Minister Roman Posek was very clear this week, stating that he sees democracy in Germany at a tipping point.

Sehen Sie das auch so dramatisch?

Do you see it that dramatically as well?

Ja, ich glaube, dass wir uns in einer ganz schwierigen Situation befinden.

Yes, I believe we are in a very difficult situation.

Und das hat eben damit zu tun, dass wir zunächst einmal eine Ampelregierung in Berlin haben, die große politische Probleme verursacht haben, von denen wir ja manchmal auch profitiert haben, das will ich zugestehen.

And that has to do with the fact that we initially have a traffic light government in Berlin that has caused major political problems, some of which we have sometimes benefited from, I want to concede that.

Aber es ist mehr und mehr auch ein echtes Demokratieproblem, was wir haben.

But it is more and more a real problem of democracy that we have.

Ich will es nochmal sagen, wenn Demokraten aufgrund der Schwäche der Demokraten untereinander nicht mehr koalieren können und Koalitionen zustande bringen, zu zweit oder zu dritt nicht einmal mehr,

I want to say it again, if Democrats can no longer form coalitions due to the weakness of the Democrats among each other, not even in pairs or threes,

dann ist das schon ein echtes demokratisches Problem.

Then that is indeed a real democratic problem.

Und wenn ich das noch hinzufügen darf, wenn wir im Osten sehen, teilweise 60 Prozent bei AfD, BSW und Linke.

And if I may add, when we look in the east, partly 60 percent for AfD, BSW, and the Left.

Das sind schon problematische Signale, über die wir da sprechen.

These are already problematic signals we are talking about.

Das ist ein gutes Stichwort, da möchten wir gerne ein bisschen genauer drauf eingehen.

Einen Tag nach der Wahl waren Sie bei einem politischen Frühschoppen im bayerischen Gillermoos, haben dort eine Rede gehalten vor CSU-Anhängern.

One day after the election, you were at a political breakfast in Bavarian Gillermoos, where you gave a speech in front of CSU supporters.

Diese Rede hat ungefähr 27 Minuten gedauert.

This speech lasted about 27 minutes.

Und da hatten Sie vor allem ein Thema.

Und die AfD ein einziges Mal erwähnt.

Herr Rhein, ist die Ampel für Sie wirklich schlimmer als die in Teilen rechtsextreme AfD?

Mr. Rhein, is the traffic light coalition really worse for you than the partly right-wing extremist AfD?

Nein, um Gottes Willen.

No, for God's sake.

Also das sind ja wirklich enorme Unterschiede.

Well, those are really huge differences.

Ich sage ja, es ist eigentlich sehr schade, was wir gerade, oder es ist eigentlich sehr problematisch, was wir in Deutschland erleben.

I say yes, it is actually very unfortunate what we are currently experiencing, or it is actually very problematic what we are experiencing in Germany.

Ich bezeichne die Grünen, die FDP und die SPD, die Ampelkoalition, das sind Demokraten, mit denen wir ja auch zusammenarbeiten in den verschiedensten Konstellationen.

I refer to the Greens, the FDP, and the SPD, the traffic light coalition, as Democrats, with whom we also work together in various constellations.

Die AfD ist für mich nie in Frage gekommen.

The AfD was never an option for me.

Ein demokratischer Partner oder überhaupt ein Partner zu sein.

To be a democratic partner or to be a partner at all.

Das ist schon ein massiver Unterschied.

That is quite a significant difference.

Nur die Probleme, die wir in Deutschland haben, die haben wir, weil die Ampel eine so schlechte Politik macht.

Das haben Sie ja schon oft gesagt.

Jetzt hätte man ja aber sagen können, wenn so viele Leute die Ampel ablehnen, dann hätten sie ja auch die CDU wählen können und nicht die AfD.

Now one could have said, if so many people reject the traffic light coalition, then they could have voted for the CDU instead of the AfD.

Also das ist natürlich ein Punkt, der, es tut mir leid, ich muss es so sagen, auch wiederum mit der Ampel zu tun hat.

Und das trifft dann leider eben auch die CDU und trotzdem muss man natürlich sich anschauen, also wir sind die Einzige, die wirklich hier noch in Führung gehen kann und die Einzige, die noch Koalitionen schmieden kann, wenn ich mir die neuesten Umfragen anschaue, bundesweit bei 33 Prozent, das ist schon ordentlich.

And unfortunately, that also affects the CDU, but of course we have to look at it; we are the only ones who can really take the lead here and the only ones who can still forge coalitions. If I look at the latest surveys, we're at 33 percent nationwide, which is quite respectable.

Und wenn Sie es mal in den europäischen Vergleich stellen, ist auch das für eine bürgerlich-konservative Partei ein sehr, sehr, sehr gutes Ergebnis.

Ja, aber 50 Prozent in diesem Deutschland-Trend, den Sie angesprochen haben, sagen auch, dass sie auch der CDU nicht zutrauen.

Eine bessere Regierung zu machen als der Ampel, also da scheinen Sie ja auch nicht das Richtige zu tun.

Ja, das glaube ich nicht, dass wir nicht das Richtige tun, sondern wir haben natürlich an vielen Punkten auch einen Paradigmenwechsel eingeleitet.

Nehmen Sie beispielsweise die Zuwanderungspolitik.

Wir formulieren heute eine völlig andere Politik als 2015, 2016 und dafür bin ich Friedrich Merz ausgesprochen dankbar, dass wir diese Kehrtwende eingeleitet haben, die den Menschen deutlich zu machen.

Na ja, Grenzkontrollen sind ja keine neue Erfindung.

Sie haben es ja selbst gesagt, es gab ja früher Grenzkontrollen.

Die Polizei an den Grenzen hat einen enormen Erfahrungsschatz und kann Situationen einschätzen.

The police at the borders have a vast wealth of experience and can assess situations.
