Hattet ihr schon mal einen Job, der euch so beflügelt, dass Arbeiten Freiheit bedeutet?

Have you ever had a job that inspires you so much that working means freedom?

Einen Job, in dem ihr das Gefühl hattet, Teil von etwas Neuem, Innovativem zu sein?

A job where you felt you were part of something new and innovative?

Wenn man diese Freiheit hat, dann geht man schon ganz anders zur Arbeit. Und wenn man sich dann auch sein Privatleben so gestalten kann, wie man möchte, dann kann ich nur sagen, was will man mehr.

When you have that freedom, you approach work in a completely different way. And when you can also shape your private life as you wish, I can only say, what more could you want?

Und es ist viel wert, meiner Meinung nach. Vor allem heutzutage. Ich meine, die Leute arbeiten sich hier schon kaputt und haben wenig Freizeit.

And it is worth a lot, in my opinion. Especially nowadays. I mean, people are working themselves to the bone here and have little free time.

Bei uns ist es halt locker.

Daniel, 25, Hauptschulabschluss, geht arbeiten, weil er Geld verdienen muss. So wie viele andere der rund 46 Millionen Erwerbstätigen in Deutschland.

Daniel, 25, has a secondary school diploma, works because he needs to earn money. Just like many others among the approximately 46 million employed people in Germany.

Daniel hatte schon viele Jobs und er hat sie gehasst, sich gelangweilt, die Zeit abgesessen.

Daniel had many jobs and he hated them, was bored, and just passed the time.

Ich war froh, wenn Feierabend war oder wenn ich frei hatte. Und ich war nicht gern dort. Also allgemein so bei den Arbeiten, wo ich davor war, war es halt Geld verdienen, die Zeit absitzen und fertig.

I was glad when work was over or when I had time off. And I didn't like being there. So generally, with the jobs I had before, it was just about earning money, passing the time, and that was it.

Das war früher.

That was in the past.

Er ist Sparkartenkontrolleur bei der S-Bahn in München und sagt, hier sei er so zufrieden wie nie zuvor.

He is a ticket inspector for the S-Bahn in Munich and says he is as satisfied here as he has never been before.

Am Ruder ist bei der Bank. Bei ihm ist alles strikt. Er kann nicht gehen und kommen, wann er will. Der hat dann und dann da zu sein.

Daniel kann sich keinen besseren Job vorstellen, sagt er. Hier bei der S-Bahn in München sei er sein eigener Chef, arbeite selbstbestimmt.

Das klingt wie New Work-Sprech. New Work, das ist der Modebegriff in der Arbeitswelt.

That sounds like New Work jargon. New Work is the buzzword in the world of work.

Momentan wird er wirklich als Containerbegriff genutzt.

At the moment, it is really being used as a catch-all term.

Das ist deswegen, glaube ich.

That is why, I believe.

Das ist eigentlich auch so populär. Das heißt, man kann reinschmeißen, was man möchte. Und man kann auch rausholen, was man möchte.

That's actually quite popular too. That means you can throw in whatever you want. And you can also take out whatever you want.

Und viele Unternehmen praktizieren das momentan. Wenn beispielsweise die Geschäftsführung 30 Prozent Berufsfläche einsparen möchte, dann ist das auf einmal auch New Work.

And many companies are currently practicing this. For example, if the management wants to save 30 percent of office space, then that suddenly becomes New Work.

Das ist Professor Carsten Schermoli, der New Work-Experte in Deutschland. Er lehrt und forscht in Berlin.

Damit wird alles beschrieben, was in der Arbeitswelt neu ist. Die Viertagewoche, Homeoffice, Online-Meetings.

This describes everything that is new in the working world: the four-day work week, remote work, online meetings.

Aber ist das wirklich New Work? Warum der ganze Hype darum und selbstbestimmt arbeiten, ausgerechnet als Fahrkartenkontrolleur der S-Bahn München bei der Bahn?

But is that really New Work? Why all the hype about it and self-determined work, of all things as a ticket inspector for the S-Bahn in Munich?

Es ist sehr locker und alle auf Augenhöhe. Und das finde ich das Schöne.

It is very relaxed and everyone is on the same level. And that is what I find beautiful.

Daniel hat in den letzten drei Jahren in seinem Job als Kontrolleur bei der S-Bahn München viel gelernt.

Daniel has learned a lot in his job as an inspector at the S-Bahn Munich in the last three years.

Nicht nur Fahrgäste zu beraten, zu kontrollieren.

Zum Beispiel, wann die Schicht im Team beginnt und wann sie endet.

Daniel sagt, er könne arbeiten.

Direkt am Ostbahnhof hat die Deutsche Bahn für das Management ein neues Bürogebäude gebaut.

Bartke ist Daniels Chef oder anders gesagt Coach und Berater.

Ein Experte in Deutschland, Professor Carsten Schermuly, sagt erst einmal, so neu sei New Work gar nicht.

Also New Work ist ein sehr alter Begriff, der stammt aus den 70er, 80er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts, ist geprägt von Friedhoff Bergmann.

New Work is a very old term that comes from the 1970s and 1980s of the last century and is shaped by Friedhoff Bergmann.

Und Friedhoff Bergmann hat sich auf die Suche danach gemacht, wie man Arbeit zu etwas machen kann, was Menschen stärkt.

Heute, wenn man es psychologisch interpretiert, ist für uns New Work etwas, was die Zielsetzung hat, das psychologische Empowerment von MitarbeiterInnen zu stärken.

Also das Erleben von Sinn, das Erleben von Selbstbestimmung, das Erleben von Einfluss.

Als Wirtschaftspsychologe forscht und lehrt Schermuly in Berlin, befragt jährlich Unternehmen in ganz Deutschland, inwieweit sie neue Arbeitsmodelle ausprobieren.

As a business psychologist, Schermuly researches and teaches in Berlin, annually surveying companies across Germany to what extent they experiment with new work models.

Die Antworten veröffentlicht er in dem sogenannten New Work Barometer.

He publishes the answers in the so-called New Work Barometer.

Carsten Schermuly schaut in viele Unternehmen, Institutionen, Behörden.

Er schaut sich auch an, wie die Bundesregierung arbeitet.

Schermuly hatte uns den Tipp gegeben, bei der S-Bahn in München nachzufragen.

Wenn man sich New Work nach seiner Definition anschaut, was ist das Wichtige dabei, will ich wissen.

Naja, dieses Erleben von psychologischem Empowerment hat sehr, sehr viele positive Konsequenzen.

Well, this experience of psychological empowerment has many, many positive consequences.

Also wir können Meta-Analysen zeigen, dass beispielsweise die Arbeitszufriedenheit profitiert, die Innovationsleistung profitiert, die Menschen sind weniger gestresst.

So, we can show meta-analyses that, for example, job satisfaction benefits, innovation performance benefits, and people are less stressed.

Die Depressionsneigung, konnten wir in der eigenen Studie zeigen, geht auch runter.

We could show in our own study that the tendency towards depression also decreases.

Das heißt, das sind so Sachen, wo auf der einen Seite die Arbeitgeber was davon haben, aber auch die Arbeitnehmer.

Die aktuelle Gallup-Studie zeigt, 2018 waren in Umfragen noch 65 Prozent der Beschäftigten fest davon überzeugt,

Und, dass New Work keineswegs die absolute Freiheit bedeutet.

Was wir jetzt hier klar sehen, ist halt Selbstbestimmung.

Das nennen wir in der Psychologie geregelte Freiheit.

Es gibt auch Leitplanken, also sechs Stunden Minimum, zehn Stunden 45 Maximum.

Und die Kollegin erlebt aber zwischen den Leitplanken Selbstbestimmung und kann mitentscheiden, wie sie vorgeht und fühlt sich dabei besser.
