Herr Lepin, Franziskus von Assisi gilt als einer der populärsten Heiligen der römisch-katholischen Kirche und ist auch weit darüber hinaus beliebt.

Mr. Lepin, Francis of Assisi is considered one of the most popular saints of the Roman Catholic Church and is also widely popular beyond that.

Ist er so populär trotz oder?

Wegen der Sperrigkeit dieser Erzählung von der Stigmatisierung.

Was spricht dafür, was spricht dagegen?

What speaks in favor of it, what speaks against it?

Ich würde mich in diese Datumsdiskussion im Grunde gar nicht hineinbegeben.

I wouldn't really want to get involved in this date discussion at all.

Die Erzählungen über die Stigmatisierung sind sozusagen, je konkreter sie werden, desto stärker geformt von den Willen derer, die das erzählen.

The stories about stigmatization are, so to speak, shaped more strongly by the will of those who tell them, the more concrete they become.

Wir kommen auf das Jahr 1224, wenn wir zurückrechnen, zwei Jahre hatte er diese Stigmata.

The first report by Elias of Cortona about this phenomenon, that stigmata were seen on the body of Francis of Assisi,

spricht, da erschien etwas und erzählt nachher, als er tot war, da sah man auch gar nichts Schlimmes mehr.

He speaks, then something appeared and later, when he was dead, you could no longer see anything bad.

Da sah man kein Leiden mehr.

Then one saw no more suffering.

Und das heißt ja doch wahrscheinlich auch, man sah keine Wundmale mehr.

And that probably also means that no more stigmata were visible.

Denn die gehören zum Leiden dazu.

For they are part of the suffering.

Es war also ein ganz vorübergehendes Phänomen und vielleicht nicht mal ein physisches Phänomen.

It was therefore a completely temporary phenomenon and perhaps not even a physical phenomenon.

Also eher etwas, was theologisch als Erscheinung, als Vision bezeichnet würde.

So rather something that would be described theologically as an apparition, as a vision.

Ich würde tatsächlich von einer Vision sprechen und das ist der Punkt, an dem wir aufpassen müssen.

I would actually call it a vision, and that's the point where we need to be careful.

Im 21. Jahrhundert sagen wir dann, naja, nur eine Vision.

In the 21st century we say, well, just a vision.

Wie war das, war das nicht Kanzler Schmidt, der sagt, wer Visionen hat, soll sich behandeln lassen medizinisch.

How was that, wasn't it Chancellor Schmidt who said that those who have visions should seek medical treatment?

Das will Elias eigentlich mitteilen, wenn er von dieser Vision erzählt.

Er benutzt latanische Worte, die man sonst aus der Bibel, aus der Erscheinung des Auferstandenen von Jesus Christus selbst kennt.

He uses Latin words that one usually knows from the Bible, from the appearance of the risen Jesus Christ himself.

Es ist also eine wirkliche Realität Gottes, eine wirkliche Tat Gottes.

It is therefore a true reality of God, a true deed of God.

Nur, dass wir heute im 21. Jahrhundert immer denken, das muss irgendwie auch greifbar sein.

It's just that today, in the 21st century, we always think it should somehow be tangible.

Und natürlich auch viele Menschen in der Zeit von Franz von Assise gedacht haben, es muss greifbar sein.

And of course many people during the time of Francis of Assisi thought it had to be tangible.

Die Vision ist an Göttlichkeit.

The vision is of divinity.

Es ist ein wirkliches Handeln, das kurz sichtbar ist und das die Augen öffnet für diejenigen, die drumherum stehen.

It is a real action that is briefly visible and opens the eyes of those who stand around.

Und dieses Augen öffnen hieß für Elias von Cortona und andere, wir sehen, hier war tatsächlich Jesus Christus neu präsent.

And this opening of the eyes meant for Elias of Cortona and others, we see, here Jesus Christ was indeed newly present.

Und dennoch haben womöglich weder Sie noch ich so etwas wie eine Vision gehabt, die wundmal an anderen Menschen gesehen hat.

And yet, perhaps neither you nor I have had a vision that has seen the miracle in other people.

Also es bleibt ja dennoch, naja, in gewisser Weise mirakulös.

So it remains, well, in a certain way miraculous.

Genau, so beschreibt Elias von Cortona das auch.

I tend to say that this was the emotion of those people who experienced Francis of Assisi and who also witnessed his dramatic death.

Das macht die Aussage, die sie gefunden haben, nicht richtiger oder falscher.

This does not make the statement they found any more right or wrong.

Auf eine ganz besondere Weise in Franz von Assise jemanden erlebt hat, der wie vielleicht sonst keine andere Christin, kein anderer Christ, Wirklichkeit aus dem gemacht hat, was Jesus Christus von den Menschen will.

In a very special way, I experienced in Francis of Assisi someone who has made reality out of what Jesus Christ wants from people like perhaps no other Christian, no other Christian.

Eine Selbstdemütigung, ein Nahekommen zu den Leidenden.

A self-humiliation, an approach to the suffering.

Er hat ja sein Leben damit begonnen, dass er zu den schwerst Kranken gegangen ist, zu den Aussätzigen, die außerhalb der Ortschaft lebten, ist zu denen gegangen,

He began his life by going to the severely ill, to the lepers who lived outside the village, he went to them,

so wie Jesus Christus immer zu den Ausgegrenzten der Gesellschaft gegangen ist.

just as Jesus Christ always went to the marginalized of society.

Und das war die...

And that was the...

Die Erkenntnis, die sich in der Vision manifestiert hat, dieser Mensch ist so etwas wie Jesus Christus für unsere Zeit.

The realization that has manifested in the vision is that this person is something like Jesus Christ for our time.

Nun zum Ort.

Now to the place.

Wenn es passiert sein sollte, dass Menschen Wundmale an Franziskus oder so etwas wie Wundmale an Franziskus wahrgenommen haben, ist das dann in La Verna passiert, in jener Einsiedelei oder woanders?

If it should have happened that people perceived stigmata on Francis or something like stigmata on Francis, did that occur in La Verna, in that hermitage or somewhere else?

Das müsste dann ja kurz vor seinem Sterben in Assisi gewesen sein.

That must have been shortly before his death in Assisi.

Die Menschen, die ihn noch begleitet haben in seinem Sterben.

The people who were still with him in his dying moments.

Die haben das wahrgenommen.

They noticed it.

Die Erzählung von La Verna ist auch dadurch entstanden, dass man die Erzählung wiederum von einer Vision hatte, die Franz von Assisi selbst hatte.

The story of La Verna was also created because there was a narrative based on a vision that Francis of Assisi himself had.

Die Vision eines Seraphen, eines geflügelten Wesens, die für ihn eine Christusoffenbarung darstellte.

The vision of a seraph, a winged being, which represented a revelation of Christ for him.

Also sozusagen die nächste Vision, die wir haben, die ist wohl gebunden an La Verna.

So, the next vision we have is probably connected to La Verna.

Das heißt, die hat er in dieser Einsamkeit gehabt, als er sich zurückgezogen hat von dem ganzen Getriebe.

That means he had them in that solitude when he withdrew from the whole hustle and bustle.

Der Mann war ja...

The man was indeed...

In gewisser Weise auch überfordert von dem, was er ausgelöst hat mit seiner Bewegung.

In a way also overwhelmed by what he has triggered with his movement.

Den wachsenden Orden konnte er nicht mehr aushalten.

He could no longer endure the growing order.

Zieht sich zurück in die Einsamkeit, hat diese visionäre Erfahrung.

Withdraws into solitude, has this visionary experience.

Aber in den allerersten Erzählungsschichten, die wir historisch haben, hat diese Seraphenvision überhaupt nichts mit der Stigmatisierung zu tun.

But in the very first layers of narrative that we have historically, this seraph vision has nothing to do with stigmatization at all.

Nicht erst der Mensch der Moderne hat ja Zweifel, sondern auch der Mensch des Hochmittelalters spricht.

Not only the modern man has doubts, but the man of the High Middle Ages speaks as well.

Es hat auch damals schon Zeitgenossen gegeben.

There were contemporaries back then as well.

The pronounced.

Wir können ja mal versuchen, die Stigmatisierung materialistisch zu dekonstruieren,

We can try to deconstruct the stigmatization materially.

wie es dann in der Folge auch wissenschaftlich immer wieder...

as it has subsequently been scientifically reiterated...

...versucht worden ist.

...has been attempted.

Spielen wir das mal durch.

Let's go through this.

Was halten Sie davon, dass Franziskus sich die Wundmale selbst zugefügt hat?

What do you think about Francis inflicting the wounds on himself?

Das ist tatsächlich eine sehr verbreitete Erklärung, an der das Interessante ist, dass wir tatsächlich in der Zeit Menschen haben, die sich selbst Wunden zufügen.

This is actually a very common explanation, and what is interesting is that we indeed have people in our time who inflict wounds on themselves.

Es gibt mehrere Berichte über Personen, die tatsächlich direkt diese fünf Wundmale Jesu Christi sich angetan haben.

There are several reports of individuals who have actually inflicted these five wounds of Jesus Christ upon themselves.

Oder Marie von Origny, die sich Fleisch aus dem Körper geschnitten hat, offenbar auch.

Or Marie von Origny, who has cut flesh from her body, apparently so.

Um in der Christusnachfolge zu leiden.

To suffer in following Christ.

Insofern spricht einiges dafür zu sagen, das war zumindest eine Möglichkeit in der Zeit.

In that regard, there is a good case to be made that it was at least one possibility at the time.

Was für mich dagegen spricht ist, dass Franz von Assisi selbst eigentlich gar nicht permanent betont hat, ich bin so ähnlich zu Jesus Christus.

What speaks against this for me is that Francis of Assisi did not actually emphasize all the time that he is so similar to Jesus Christ.

Das ist eine Erkenntnis seiner Nachfolger der folgenden Generationen, die ihn so sehr mit Christus verglichen haben.

This is a realization of his successors from the following generations, who have compared him so much to Christ.

Er hat sich selbst stärker selbst als Jünger Jesu Christi verstanden, denn als Christus selbst.

He understood himself as a stronger disciple of Jesus Christ than Christ himself.

Allerdings ist auch Martin Luther davon ausgegangen, dass er sich die selbst zugefügt hat, also Franziskus.

However, Martin Luther also assumed that he had inflicted it upon himself, namely Francis.

Ist er denn so weit gegangen, dass er in Franziskus einen Betrüger gesehen hat?

Has he gone so far as to see a fraud in Francis?

Tatsächlich hat Martin Luther zu der Armutsfrömmigkeit des Mittelalters insgesamt eine relativ positive Haltung gehabt.

Indeed, Martin Luther had a relatively positive attitude towards the piety of poverty in the Middle Ages.

War ja selbst in einem armen Orden gewesen und auch zu Franziskus als solchen eine positive Haltung.

He had even been in a poor order himself and also had a positive attitude towards Francis as such.

Aber der heiligen Kult um Franziskus ist für ihn Teil dessen, was er in der mittelalterlichen Kirche als Betrügerei gesehen hat.

But the cult of the saints around Francis is for him part of what he saw as deception in the medieval Church.

Und insofern ein Element dessen, was er meinte, verachten zu müssen.

And insofar as it is an element of what he had to despise.

Ein anderer Erklärungsversuch könnte ja auch der sein, dass die Wundmale zu deuten wären als psychosomatische Folge genau jener Erscheinung, von der Sie eben gesprochen haben.

Another attempt at explaining could be that the stigmata might be interpreted as a psychosomatic consequence of exactly the phenomenon you just mentioned.

Also der Seraphim mit den sechs Flügeln, die Franziskus ja nun auch mal umgehauen haben dürfte.

So the seraph with the six wings, which must have impressed Francis as well.

Also was spricht für so eine Erklärung und was dagegen?

So what speaks for such an explanation and what speaks against it?

Das ist tatsächlich eine hochinteressante Frage.

That is indeed a highly interesting question.

Das ist eine hochinteressante Erklärung, die vielleicht der wichtigste franziskanische Forscher zu Franziskus, der Octavian Schmucki, etabliert hat für die Forschung.

This is a highly interesting explanation that perhaps the most important Franciscan researcher on Francis, Octavian Schmucki, has established for research.

Dafür spricht der erzählerische Zusammenhang, der bei Thomas von Celano, dem Biografen, sehr eng ist zwischen dieser Vision und den Wundmalen.

The narrative connection speaks for this, which is very close in Thomas of Celano, the biographer, between this vision and the stigmata.

Es spricht der Umstand dafür, dass in der Vision in diesem Seraphen eine Menschengestalt zu sehen ist, die aussieht wie Jesus Christus.

The circumstance suggests that in the vision of this seraph, a human form can be seen that looks like Jesus Christ.

Also wir haben zunächst eine Erzählung von der Seraphenvision ohne Stigmatisierung.

So we first have a narration of the Seraph vision without stigmatization.

Dann rückt beides zusammen.

Then both come together.

Dann haben wir beides miteinander verwoben, die Seraphenvision.

Then we intertwined both, the Seraph vision.

Und diese Stigmatisierung.

And this stigmatization.

Wenn das aber erst literarisch entstanden ist, wenn die Autoren sich gedacht haben, das passt wunderbar,

But if it was only created in a literary sense, when the authors thought to themselves, that fits wonderfully,

dann würden wir mit der Erzählung von einer psychosomatischen Erscheinung im Grunde nicht das realhistorische Geschehen um Franz von Assisi beschreiben,

then we would not be describing the real historical events surrounding Francis of Assisi with the narrative of a psychosomatic phenomenon,

sondern das, was die Schriftsteller daraus gemacht haben.

but rather what the writers have made of it.

Um das jetzt mal ein wenig zusammenzufassen.

To summarize this a bit now.

Sie gehen nicht davon aus, dass ein schwerkranker Franziskus zwei Jahre lang mit Nägeln in Händen, Füßen und Seite herumgelaufen ist.

They do not assume that a seriously ill Francis walked around for two years with nails in his hands, feet, and side.

Zumal er schwer krank war.

Especially since he was seriously ill.

Also in diesem Sinne hat es vor 800 Jahren keine Stigmatisierung gegeben.

So in this sense, there was no stigmatization 800 years ago.

Es hat nach meiner Ansicht keine physische Stigmatisierung zwei Jahre vor dem Tod von Franz von Assisi gegeben.

In my opinion, there was no physical stigmatization two years before the death of Francis of Assisi.

Da spricht der literarische Befund dagegen.

There, the literary evidence speaks against it.

Positiv gedreht. Was lässt sich sagen? Was ist passiert?

Positively twisted. What can be said? What has happened?

Passiert ist, dass das Umfeld von Franz von Assisi zutiefst beeindruckt war von dieser Persönlichkeit.

What happened was that the environment of Francis of Assisi was deeply impressed by this personality.

So tief beeindruckt, dass in dem Moment, in dem es bei dieser Persönlichkeit auf das Sterben zurückkehrt,

So deeply impressed that at the moment when it returns to dying for this personality,

immer stärker die Erkenntnis da war, das ist ein Leiden wie das Leiden Jesu Christi.

the realization was becoming ever stronger that this is a suffering like the suffering of Jesus Christ.

Das war ein Leben wie das Leben Jesu Christi.

It was a life like the life of Jesus Christ.

Und daraus entstand bei diesen Menschen das visionäre Bild, dort sind die Wundmale Jesu Christi zu sehen.

And from this, a visionary image emerged among these people, where the wounds of Jesus Christ can be seen.

Franz von Assisi hat im Grunde das erlebt, was auch der Apostel Paulus von sich sagt.

Francis of Assisi essentially experienced what the Apostle Paul says about himself.

Ich trage die Wundmale Christi. Und das sehen diese Menschen in einer Vision.

I bear the wounds of Christ. And these people see this in a vision.

Und diese Vision würde ich, Sie sagten es als evangelischer Theologe und nicht Franziskaner,

And this vision I would, you said it as a Protestant theologian and not a Franciscan,

sagen, diese Vision hat etwas sehr Richtiges erfasst über das Leben von Franz von Assisi,

to say, this vision has captured something very right about the life of Francis of Assisi,

Der Visionsbericht, so wie in Elias von Cortona, schreibt an seine Brüder, der scheint mir sehr authentisch zu sein.
