Eine von 400 Sprachen, die man in jeder spricht.

Viele nennen das Projekt einfach Afrika-Projekt,

Many simply call the project the Africa Project,

obwohl mein Team seit mehr als 20 Jahren aus Kolleginnen besteht,

die auch aus Ländern Europas, Asiens und Südamerikas kommen.

Mobbing und Ausgrenzung und versucht zu einem guten Zusammenleben

aller Menschen in der Steiermark beizutragen.

to contribute to all people in Styria.

Man trifft dabei viele tolle Menschen, lernt viel von den Kindern

One meets many great people and learns a lot from the children.

und gewinnt dadurch große und kleine Freunde.

and thereby gains big and small friends.

So wie das Mädchen aus der Volksschule Judendorfstraß Engel,

Just like the girl from the Judendorfstraße primary school, Engel,

das nach dem Abschlussfest zu mir kam und mich ganz leise fragte.

Als ich überrascht nichte,

Aber die Bilder, die man zum Thema Afrika präsentiert,

But the images that are presented on the subject of Africa,

beziehungsweise die manchmal sogar anlässlich des Afrika-Projekts

or sometimes even on the occasion of the Africa project

in den Einrichtungen aufgehängt werden, treffen einen schwer.

They are put up in the facilities, hitting hard.

Ich stehe.

I am standing.

Ich stehe dann oft vor diesen Bildern und dann geistern Begriffe

I often stand in front of these images, and then terms float through my mind.

wie Biafra-Kinder durch meinen Kopf,

like Biafra children through my mind,

wo ich 1966 noch ein Baby war, als der Biafra-Krieg begann.

where I was still a baby in 1966, when the Biafra War started.

Nackte, abgemagerte Kinder,

Naked, emaciated children,

dänende Rotz aus der Nase rinnt,

dripping snot from the nose,

fliegen überall,

fly everywhere,

strohgedeckte Häuser aus Lehm.

Thatched houses made of clay.

Natürlich gab es oder gibt es das auch,

Of course, there was or is that too,

aber ich frage mich, wie die Kinder mich dann wahrnehmen.

But I wonder how the children perceive me then.

Was erzeugen diese Bilder?

What do these images create?

Angst, Mitleid, Scheu oder mehr Distanz?

Fear, compassion, shyness, or more distance?

Für mich ist immer die Frage, warum genau diese Bilder?

For me, the question is always, why these particular images?

Was möchten die Pädagoginnen damit bewirken?

What do the educators hope to achieve with that?

Oder wissen sie überhaupt, was sie damit möglicherweise auslösen,

Or do you even know what you might trigger with it,

bewusst oder unbewusst?

conscious or unconscious?

Als ich einmal während des Projekts in der Pause spazieren ging,

As I was walking during the break on the project,

kam ein Kind mit vielleicht neun Jahren auf mich zu

a child of perhaps nine years old came up to me

und wollte mir fünf Euro schenken.

and wanted to give me five euros.

Warum?

Why?

Das, das Kind?

That, the child?

Weil du so arm bist, antwortete das Kind.

"Because you are so poor," the child replied.

Ich war kurz sprachlos, dann bedankte ich mich beim Kind

I was momentarily speechless, then I thanked the child.

und gab ihm ebenfalls einen Fünf-Euro-Schein.

and also gave him a five-euro note.

Der arme Bub war verwirrt,

The poor boy was confused,

Er verstand nicht, was gerade passiert war.

He did not understand what had just happened.

Ich versuchte, es ihm zu erklären,

I tried to explain it to him,

Afrika hat auch völlig andere

Gesichter. Hochhäuser,

Faces. High-rises,

U-Bahnen und Universitäten.

Subways and universities.

Und es ist nicht ein

Und jedes Land hat
