Brauchen wir mehr Erziehung?
Charakter hat man nicht einfach, so wenig wie man von Geburt an laufen, denken oder lesen könnte.
Character is not something you simply have, just as you cannot walk, think, or read from birth.
Charakter kommt andererseits auch nicht plötzlich wie ein Schnupfen, sondern muss sich bilden.
Character, on the other hand, does not suddenly appear like a cold, but must develop.
Allerdings sind im Deutschen gerade Wörter wie Charakter oder Herzensbildung völlig aus der Mode gekommen.
However, words like character or cultivation of the heart have completely fallen out of fashion in German.
Stattdessen spricht man nahezu ausnahmslos und eher technisch von Erziehung.
Instead, people almost exclusively and more technically talk about education.
Wer aber zieht hier woran und wohin eigentlich?

Erziehung, so sagt es ein Lexikon der Psychologie, sind alle Vorgänge, die der nachfolgenden Generation die Wertvorstellungen und Verhaltensnormen einer Gesellschaft vermitteln sollen.
Education, as a psychology dictionary states, encompasses all processes that aim to impart the values and behavioral standards of a society to the next generation.
Erwünschtes Verhalten wird bestärkt, unerwünschtes getadelt.
Desired behavior is reinforced, undesired behavior is criticized.
Das können zum Beispiel Werte wie Ehrlichkeit sein, Pünktlichkeit, Zuverlässigkeit oder der Einsatz für andere.
These can be values such as honesty, punctuality, reliability, or commitment to others.
Aber vielleicht auch das genaue Gegenteil.
