Wer ein Kabuff hat, der kann sich freuen.

Those who have a nook can be happy.

Wer allerdings in einem Kabuff wohnt, hat es weniger gut getroffen.

However, those who live in a cramped space are not as fortunate.

Klein und dunkel, so sieht ein typisches Kabuff aus.

Small and dark, that's what a typical cubby looks like.

Ein Kabuff ist ein Zimmer, das sehr wenige Quadratmeter und kein Fenster hat.

A cubby is a room that has very few square meters and no window.

Jemand, der in seiner Wohnung einen Kabuff hat, kann sich freuen,

Someone who has a cubbyhole in their apartment can be happy,

denn den kleinen Raum kann man prima als Abstellraum nutzen.

Konservendosen, Wintermäntel, Schuhe, all das wird im Kabuff verstaut

und steht nicht mehr im Weg rum.

Das Zimmer, in dem ich als Studentin gewohnt habe, war echt ein Kabuff,

sagt jemand, der während seiner Studienzeit in einem kleinen Raum gehaust hat.

Das Wort stammt übrigens,

The word originates, by the way,

vom mittelniederdeutschen Kuffe ab, was früher kleines, schlechtes Haus bedeutete.

from Middle Low German Kuffe, which used to mean a small, poor house.

Ob das Zimmer, das man mieten will, ein Kabuff ist,

Whether the room you want to rent is a tiny cubby,

erfährt man leider erst, wenn man es sich anschaut.
