Nun wird dieses Jahr sein 200. Todestag gefeiert und in diesem Zusammenhang startet morgen das Vasta Festival,

Wie sind Sie denn auf die Idee gekommen, ausgerechnet mit Street-Art an Wallraff zu erinnern?

How did you come up with the idea of remembering Wallraff specifically through street art?

Genau, die Verbindung ist vielleicht nicht unmittelbar klar, was haben Wallraff und Street-Art gemeinsam,

Exactly, the connection may not be immediately clear; what do Wallraff and street art have in common?

aber eigentlich, ich habe in seiner Biografie tatsächlich,

but actually, I have actually read in his biography,

viele Facetten gefunden, darunter auch ein Aspekt, was weniger bekannt ist,

many facets found, including an aspect that is less known,

und zwar, dass er als Meister der Epigraphik einen Namen hatte.

and that he had a name as a master of epigraphy.

Und Epigraphik bedeutet, dass er in der ganzen Stadt für besondere Feierlichkeiten

And epigraphy means that he is responsible for special celebrations throughout the city.

Inschriften mit vergänglichen Materialien angebracht hat.

Inscribed with perishable materials.

Das waren hauptsächlich Sprüche auf lateinischer Sprache

These were mainly sayings in Latin.

und das war seine Form der Kommunikation.

and that was his way of communicating.

Im öffentlichen Raum und dieser Aspekt ist immer noch sehr aktuell.

In public spaces, and this aspect is still very relevant.

Heute haben wir viele Formen der Kunst im öffentlichen Raum,

Schrift im öffentlichen Raum, Graffiti, Street-Art und das war unmittelbar für mich eine Verbindung.

Writing in public space, graffiti, street art, and that was an immediate connection for me.

Ich habe auch Erfahrung mit anderen Projekten, mit Künstlerinnen, mit Street-Artisten

I also have experience with other projects, with artists, with street artists.

und deswegen war auch spontan entstanden diese Idee, dass man vielleicht,

and that's why this idea spontaneously came about, that maybe,

Waldraff auch unter einem neuen Licht und die Stadt auch beleuchten kann durch Street-Art.

Waldraff can also be seen in a new light, and the city can also be illuminated through street art.

Ja, sehr schön, vielleicht ihn auch so ein bisschen wie ein Pionier zu verstehen in diesem Bereich.

You and your students have also dealt with the darker sides of his biography.

Genau, also das ist ein Punkt, was wir, also,

Exactly, so that's a point that we, well,

also, diese Beschäftigung mit Waldraff und seinem Erbe hat uns zwei Semester lang,

So, this engagement with Waldraff and his legacy has occupied us for two semesters,

also wir haben in zwei Semester in einem Seminar mit ungefähr 30 Studierenden

So we have had a seminar with about 30 students over two semesters.

Waldraff seine Biografie, seine Schriften untersucht, um uns ein bisschen bewusst

Waldraff's biography and his writings are examined to make us a little aware.

mit dieser Figur, dieser historischen Figur auseinanderzusetzen.

to engage with this figure, this historical figure.

Und wir wissen, dass die Geschichte, also die Idee war eben, Gegenwart und Geschichte zu verbinden.

And we know that the idea of the story was to connect the present and history.

In einer kreativen und kritischen Art und Weise.

In a creative and critical manner.

Und wir wissen, dass die Geschichte ist nicht harmlos.

And we know that history is not harmless.

Und bei seinen Schriften, wie bei vielen auch seiner Zeitgenossen, findet man Passagen,

And in his writings, as with many of his contemporaries, one finds passages,

die aus heutiger Sicht absolut nicht mehr akzeptabel sind,

which, in today's view, are absolutely no longer acceptable,

zum Beispiel sexistische Aussagen oder anti-judaistische Aussagen.

for example, sexist statements or anti-Jewish statements.

Und das haben wir tatsächlich, das hat uns überrascht und zum Teil auch beunruhigt,

dass es solche Art und Weise gibt.

Und wir haben aber natürlich das Ganze, wir haben versucht, die Figur einzuordnen,

natürlich nicht wir alleine als kleine Seminargruppe, sondern mit Waldraff-Experten der Universität zu können,

of course not just us alone as a small seminar group, but with Waldraff experts from the university,

die Kolleginnen des Historischen Instituts, Lehrstuhl von Frau Gersmann.

the colleagues of the Historical Institute, Chair of Ms. Gersmann.

Wir waren eben immer im Austausch, um diese Aspekte zu verstehen.

We were always in exchange to understand these aspects.

Und diese Aspekte sind historisch einzuordnen.

And these aspects must be placed in a historical context.

Kommen wir mal auf die künstlerische Umsetzung, weil das ist ja jetzt keine wissenschaftliche Ausstellung mit wissenschaftlichen Schriften,

Let's talk about the artistic implementation, because this is not a scientific exhibition with scientific writings.

sondern es ist ein Street-Art-Festival.

but it is a street art festival.

Wie werden denn auch die kritischen Aspekte künstlerisch dargestellt oder umgesetzt?

How are the critical aspects artistically represented or implemented?

Das überlassen wir komplett den Künstlerinnen.

We leave that completely to the artists.

Und das haben wir auch nicht explizit gewollt, aber das ist passiert.

And we didn't explicitly want that either, but it happened.

Die Künstlerinnen arbeiten immer kritisch mit aktuellen Themen.

The artists always engage critically with current issues.

Also eine Künstlerin zum Beispiel.

So, an artist for example.

Unter den Sammelobjekten von Waldraff ist ein sehr berühmter Medusakopf.

Among Waldraff's collectibles is a very famous Medusa head.

Und diese Figur, diese mythologische Figur, wird immer mit feministischen Ansätzen behandelt, heute.

And this figure, this mythological figure, is always approached with feminist perspectives today.

Und das hat eine Künstlerin angeboten.

And an artist offered that.

Wir haben ein Open Call für Künstlerinnen veröffentlicht.

We have published an open call for female artists.

Sie hat sich mit diesem Konzept beworben.

Und das ist ein Beispiel.

Und dann passt sie gut mit diesen sexistischen Aussagen,

die damals häufig in den Schriftstücken waren.

Oder auch diese Aspekte des Anti-Judaismus.

Der französische Künstler, der den Kopf entwirft und gestaltet,

wird sich damit auseinandersetzen.

Er will nicht einfach ein Hommage oder einfach ehren,

sondern er will kritisch damit umgehen.

Oder der Aspekt Sammeln ist auch eine Tätigkeit,

die viele negative Komponente oder Aspekte mit sich bringen kann.

Es ist nicht nur ein Bereich, eine Stadt mit Objektebereichen.

Es gibt viele Aspekte, die heute aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive kritisch betrachtet werden.

There are many aspects that are critically examined today from a postcolonial perspective.

Und das macht auch eine Künstlerin,

die eine virtuelle Reality-Installation im Meladenfriedhof organisiert.

Da ist ein QR-Code.

Man sammelt diese QR-Codes und daraus entsteht ihr Kunstwerk.

One collects these QR codes, and from them, their artwork is created.

Ich kann aber nichts verraten, was das Kunstwerk ist.

But I can't reveal what the artwork is.

Das ist das, was Sie jetzt im Meladen verortet haben.

That is what you have now located in the store.

Und sonst in der Stadt?

And otherwise in the city?

Gibt es auch was direkt im Schatten unseres mächtigen Doms?

Is there something directly in the shadow of our mighty cathedral?

Genau, ja, genau.

Exactly, yes, exactly.

Im Schatten des Doms.

In the shadow of the cathedral.

Weil Walraff hat den Kölner Dom sehr geliebt und gepflegt.

Because Walraff loved and cared for the Cologne Cathedral very much.

Berg Gottes hat diese mächtige Gebäude genannt.

Mountain of God has called this powerful building.

Und im Schatten des Doms wird eben morgen am 5. September

And in the shadow of the cathedral, tomorrow on September 5th.

der Kopf von Walraff eine ephemere Skulptur präsentiert und eröffnet.

Walraff's head presents and inaugurates an ephemeral sculpture.

Das ist eben am Kunstbach, also unter dem Dom,

Wie lange werden denn die Kunstwerke im öffentlichen Raum zu sehen sein?

Ist in zehn Tagen alles vorbei?

Will it all be over in ten days?

Oder bleibt das eine oder andere erhalten?

Or will one or the other be preserved?

Das wissen wir nicht.

We don't know that.

Wir haben uns absichtlich mit der Dauer nicht wirklich beschäftigt,

We have deliberately not really dealt with the duration.

im Sinne von Street Art.

in the sense of street art.

Man kann nie wissen, ob wegen Regeln oder Vandalen

You can never know whether it's due to rules or vandalism.

oder einfach die Werke können länger bleiben oder auch verschwinden.

Or simply the works can stay longer or also disappear.

Einige sind tatsächlich bestimmt, dass sie schnell verschwinden.

Some are indeed destined to disappear quickly.

Oder verblassen.

Or fade away.

Aber Sie haben was ganz Geschicktes gemacht.

Sie haben ja eine berühmte Street Art Fotografin eingeladen,

das Projekt zu dokumentieren.

Also das heißt, auf dem Wege bleibt es dann auf jeden Fall erhalten.

Genau. Das ist aber auch für die Street Art tatsächlich sehr wichtig.

Sie schaffen Werke.

Sie wissen nicht, was das Schicksal sein wird.

Aber sie dokumentieren.

Und die Fotografie spielt dabei eine sehr wichtige Rolle.

Ich glaube, da kann sich Köln ganz wohl fühlen in der Gesellschaft von New York.

I believe Cologne can feel quite at home in the company of New York.

Das ist eine Achse, die da bestimmt sehr gut ankommt.

That's an axis that will definitely be very well received.

Was wünschen Sie sich denn von einem Street Art Festival?

What do you wish for from a street art festival?

Im Hinblick auf das Verständnis der Persönlichkeit Ferdinand Franz-Weilraffs.

In regard to the understanding of the personality of Ferdinand Franz-Weilraff.

Meinen Sie, dass man ihn danach auch ein bisschen anders sieht,

Do you think that one sees him a bit differently afterwards?

zumindest ein bisschen differenzierter?

at least a little more differentiated?

Das ist, was wir hoffen.

That is what we hope for.

Ich glaube, unsere Städte brauchen nicht so sehr Monumenten,

I believe our cities do not need monuments so much,

sondern mehr frische, neue Ansätze, kritische Ansätze, kreative Ansätze,

but rather more fresh, new approaches, critical approaches, creative approaches,

auch mit historischen Figuren.

also with historical figures.

Und vielleicht auch diese Verbindung der Wissenschaft mit der Kunst.

And perhaps also this connection of science with art.
