Wie viel ist in Ihrer Familie geredet worden über die Zeit des Dritten Reichs,

How much has been talked about the time of the Third Reich in your family?

den Zweiten Weltkrieg oder den Holocaust?

the Second World War or the Holocaust?

Ganz so weit zurück liegen die Ereignisse ja nicht.

The events aren't that far back, after all.

Man braucht meist nur ein, zwei Generationen zurückzuspringen zu den Eltern oder Großeltern,

One usually only needs to jump back one or two generations to the parents or grandparents,

um jemanden zu haben, der noch irgendwie davon betroffen war, der etwas miterlebt hat.

to have someone who was still somehow affected by it, who has experienced something.

Und sei es auch nur das große Schweigen danach.

Auch Ruth Rothwax ist im Schweigen aufgewachsen.

Jetzt macht sie sich auf von New York nach Polen, nach Lodz, Krakau und Auschwitz.

Und ihr Vater, der schon überall dort gewesen ist als Kind, folgt ihr.

Mein Gast heute hat sie dabei begleitet in ihrem Spielfilm Treasure.

Frau von Hainz, eine Tochter und ein Vater mit dem Namen Ruth und Edek Rothwax hat es vermutlich nie gegeben.

Mrs. von Hainz, a daughter and a father named Ruth and Edek Rothwax probably never existed.

Und doch haben sie die beiden nicht frei erfunden.

And yet they did not invent the two freely.

Wessen Geschichte erzählen Sie da?

Whose story are you telling there?

Ich erzähle hier die Geschichte von Lilly Brett, der Romanautorin,

I am telling the story of Lilly Brett, the novel writer.

von einem Roman, der heißt Zu viele Männer.

from a novel titled Too Many Men.

Ist aber genau diese Geschichte.

But it's exactly this story.

Der Titel hat dann keinen Sinn mehr gemacht.

The title no longer made sense.

Aber der Kern des Buches, diese Reise nach Polen zwischen Vater und Tochter,

But the core of the book, this journey to Poland between father and daughter,

ist erhalten und aus diesem Buch adaptiert.

is preserved and adapted from this book.

Es ist ihre ganz persönliche Geschichte.

It is her very personal story.

Eine Reise, die sie selbst mit ihrem Vater Anfang der 1990er Jahre gemacht hat.

A trip that she took herself with her father in the early 1990s.

Also nochmal, es gibt eine Romanvorlage, also kein Sachbuch.

So again, there is a novel as the source, not a non-fiction book.

Aber dieser Roman selbst, genauso wie ihr Spielfilm, basiert auf,

But this novel itself, just like her feature film, is based on,

wahrscheinlich sind die Namen geändert worden und viele andere Sachen auch.

Probably the names have been changed and many other things as well.

Aber basiert auf einer wahren Begebenheit, auf einer wahren Geschichte.

But based on a true event, on a true story.

Richtig. Die wirklichen Menschen hießen Lilliane und Max Breitenstein.

That's right. The real people were named Lilliane and Max Breitenstein.

Und nachdem sie in Amerika dann sesshaft geworden sind, Lilly und Max Brett.

And after they settled in America, Lilly and Max Brett.

Der Name wurde abgekürzt.

The name was abbreviated.

Ihnen ist der Film auch gewidmet, vor allem dem Max Brett, unser Edek.

The film is dedicated to you, especially to Max Brett, our Edek.

Dem realen Max Brett haben wir den Film am Ende gewidmet.

We dedicated the film at the end to the real Max Brett.

Der ist leider nicht mehr am Leben.

Unfortunately, he is no longer alive.

Wir hatten noch so gehofft, dass er den Film sieht, ist aber leider vor drei Jahren gestorben.

We had hoped so much that he would see the movie, but unfortunately he passed away three years ago.

Der Vater von Lilly Brett, der Romanautorin.

The father of Lilly Brett, the novelist.

Treasure. Familie ist ein fremdes Land, gerade angelaufen bei uns im Kino.

Treasure. Family is a foreign land, just released in our cinema.

Die Regisseurin Julia von Heinz ist heute mein Gast im Gespräch am Samstag.

The director Julia von Heinz is my guest in the conversation on Saturday.

Und diese Suche nach dem Schatz, dem Treasure, beginnt an einem trüben Tag am Flughafen von Warschau.

And this search for the treasure begins on a gloomy day at the airport in Warsaw.

Eine Frau, Mitte 30, wartet auf ihren Vater.

A woman in her mid-30s is waiting for her father.

Doch als der auftaucht, ist die nicht etwa froh, sondern überschüttet ihn gleich mit Vorwürfen.

But when he shows up, she is not happy at all; instead, she immediately bombards him with accusations.

Frau von Heinz, was ist denn da vorgefallen?

Mrs. von Heinz, what happened there?

Er ist in den Flieger nicht reingestiegen, sondern ist hier praktisch in New York am Flughafen schon abhandengekommen.

He didn't get on the plane, but practically disappeared here in New York at the airport.

Weil er noch mal zu McDonalds rein ist, weil er dann auch noch ein Buch kaufen wollte und so weiter.

Because he went back into McDonald's because he also wanted to buy a book and so on.

Er hat den Flieger verpasst. Sie sitzt hier jetzt seit drei Tagen und wartet, ist entsprechend ein bisschen geladen auf ihn.

He missed the flight. She has been sitting here for three days now waiting and is therefore a bit upset with him.

Das ist aber eben nur der Anfang, weil im Grunde genommen, er hat sich ihr ein bisschen aufgezwungen bei dieser Reise.

But that is just the beginning, because basically, he imposed himself on her a little during this trip.

Sie sagt auch, ich hätte es durchaus auch gern alleine gemacht, aber du hast mich ja nicht gelassen.

She also says that I would have liked to do it on my own, but you didn't let me.

Also er zwingt sich ihr praktisch auf, nur um sie eigentlich ganz schön zu bikotieren jeden Tag.

So he practically forces himself on her, only to actually boycott her quite a bit every day.

Weil warum, das erfahren wir eben dann im Laufe der Reise.

Because why, we will find out during the course of the journey.

Weshalb er sie eigentlich von allem nur fernhalten will.

Why he actually wants to keep her away from everything.

Daraus erzeugt sich eben gleich aus diesen zwei ganz unterschiedlichen Interessen von Anfang an eine ganz schöne Spannung, aber auch Humor, würde ich sagen.

This creates quite a nice tension right from the beginning out of these two very different interests, but also humor, I would say.

Ahnt die Tochter schon was, dass es eigentlich nicht wahr sein kann, dass er ein Flugzeug nur wegen einem Hamburger verpasst hat?

Does the daughter already suspect that it can't really be true that he missed a plane just because of a hamburger?

Ich glaube, das baut sich erst dann so im Laufe des nächsten Tages auf bei ihr.

I believe that it will build up like that over the course of the next day for her.

Dass ihr klar wird, Mensch, der hat hier überhaupt keine Lust drauf und der macht auch alles dafür, damit das hier eigentlich nicht klappt.

That you realize, man, he has no desire for this at all and he is doing everything to ensure that this doesn't actually work.

Es geht der Tochter um die Geschichte.

The daughter is concerned about the story.

Sie hat hier die Geschichte ihrer Familie, ihres Vaters und der Angehörigen.

She has here the history of her family, her father, and her relatives.

Was weiß sie darüber an diesem frühen Punkt des Films?

What does she know about it at this early point in the film?

Sie weiß eben zu ihrem eigenen Leidwesen nichts.

She knows nothing, much to her own sorrow.

Wir sehen, dass sie eine Menge Bücher mitschleppt.

We see that she is dragging along a lot of books.

Bücher mit Faktenwissen, geschichtlichen Fakten über den Holocaust.

Books with factual knowledge, historical facts about the Holocaust.

Sie versucht sich unheimlich viel anzulesen und hat sich auch sehr viel angelesen zu dem, was Juden aus Lodz widerfahren sein muss.

She is trying to read an incredible amount and has also read a lot about what must have happened to the Jews from Lodz.

Sie zieht entsprechende Rückschlüsse auf ihre eigenen Eltern.

She draws corresponding conclusions about her own parents.

Die, die solche Juden aus Lodz waren, weiß es aber eben nicht von den Eltern persönlich.

Those who were such Jews from Lodz do not know it personally from their parents.

Denn die haben, wie viele andere Holocaust- und vor allem Auschwitz-Überlebende, dieses Leid fernhalten wollen von den eigenen Kindern.

Because they, like many other Holocaust and especially Auschwitz survivors, wanted to keep this suffering away from their own children.

Die wollten einen Neuanfang und eine Stunde Null und ja nicht nach hinten gucken, sondern nur nach vorn.

They wanted a fresh start and a clean slate, focusing only on the future and not looking back.

Und deshalb wurde eben über die ganze Familie, die es einmal gegeben hatte dort in Lodz, auch über das Haus, die Fabrik, wir lernen das dann alles kennen im Laufe des Films, stillgeschwiegen.

And that's why the entire family that once existed there in Lodz, as well as the house and the factory, were kept silent about; we will get to know all of that over the course of the film.

Das war die Geschichte.

That was the story.

Der Vater gibt sich betont unbeeindruckt von dem, was er da so sieht.

The father pretends to be undisturbed by what he sees.

Zunächst auf jeden Fall, also bis fast zum Ende des Films, obwohl er ja zum ersten Mal seit 1991 spielt, der Film.

First of all, at least until almost the end of the film, even though it takes place for the first time since 1991.

40 Jahre.

40 years.

Also seit 40 Jahren dort nicht mehr gewesen ist und er nicht durchgängig gute Erinnerungen mit verbinden kann mit diesem Land.

So he hasn't been there for 40 years and cannot consistently associate good memories with this country.

In einer Szene sucht er die Mauer des Warschauer Ghettos, wo er mal eingekerkert worden ist mit seiner Familie.

In a scene, he searches for the wall of the Warsaw ghetto, where he was once imprisoned with his family.

Und als er sieht, dass es diese Mauer halt nicht mehr gibt, stellt er sich einfach für ein Foto von einer anderen Mauer.

And when he sees that this wall no longer exists, he simply poses for a photo in front of another wall.

Und sagt, eine Mauer ist eine Mauer.

And says, a wall is a wall.

Das ist ein ganz zentraler Satz in Ihrem Film.

This is a very central sentence in your film.

Doch in der Romanvorlage von Lilibet steht der gar nicht.

But in the novel by Lilibet, he is not mentioned at all.

Den haben Sie frei erfunden.

You invented that.

Warum denn?

Why not?

Stimmt.

That's right.

Also es mag diesen einen Satz geben.

So there may be this one sentence.

Eine Mauer ist eine Mauer.

A wall is a wall.

A wall is a wall im Original.

A wall is a wall in the original.

Aber der wird da nicht groß wiederholt.

But it won't be repeated there in a big way.

Wir haben tatsächlich auf dieser Anmerkung von Edek ein Stück weit die Dramaturgie aufgebaut,

We did actually build a certain degree of drama on this comment from Edek,

weil er am Anfang eben so tut, als hat das hier alles keine Bedeutung.

because in the beginning he pretends that none of this matters.

Kein Gegenstand, wir lernen auch kennen im Lauf des Filmes, dass Gegenstände eine große Rolle spielen werden.

No object, we also get to know in the course of the film that objects will play a significant role.

Kein Gegenstand spielt eine Rolle, kein Ort, kein Gebäude.

No object plays a role, no place, no building.

Es ist doch alles nur dasselbe und hier gibt es nichts zu sehen, gehen Sie weiter.

It's all the same anyway, and there's nothing to see here, move along.

Also das ist seine Haltung, aber die bröckelt ja und das erleben wir eben mit ihm,

So that is his attitude, but it's crumbling and we are experiencing this with him.

dass nach und nach, je mehr Ruth ihn da reinzieht und darauf beharrt, doch das hat alles eine Bedeutung

Desto mehr bröckelt seine Haltung und da kann sie eigentlich nicht mehr aufrechterhalten.

Und sie ist zunehmend unzufrieden eigentlich mit, sie fängt schon sehr unzufrieden an mit ihrem Vater

And she is increasingly dissatisfied, actually starting to be very dissatisfied with her father.

und wird immer unzufriedener mit diesem Ausweichmanöver.

and is becoming increasingly dissatisfied with this evasive maneuver.

Eines Tages zum Beispiel führt er sie ins Chopin Museum.

One day, for example, he takes her to the Chopin Museum.

Das wird man als Tourist in Polen sicherlich in Warschau sehr gerne besuchen,

As a tourist in Poland, one will certainly enjoy visiting Warsaw.

aber das war überhaupt nicht der Sinn der Reise.

but that was not at all the purpose of the trip.

So geht es hin und her und gleichzeitig, was man auch schon spürt, es ist nicht nur das, was sie irritiert.

It goes back and forth, and at the same time, what you can already feel is that it's not just what irritates them.

Die Tochter tritt ihre Reise an.

The daughter embarks on her journey.

Sie hat offensichtlich schon mit einer eigenen Bürde im Gepäck.

She is obviously already carrying her own burden.

Ihr Leben ist gerade havariert.

Your life has just gone awry.

Vielleicht erzählen Sie uns auch da mal ein bisschen was drüber,

Perhaps you could tell us a bit about that as well.

denn es ist eben nicht nur eine Geschichte eines Wiedersehens,

for it is not just a story of a reunion,

gewissermaßen mit dem Holocaust und einer Familiengeschichte,

in a way with the Holocaust and a family history,

sondern es ist eben auch eine Geschichte über das schwierige Verhältnis

but it is also a story about the difficult relationship

und hinterher auch die Liebe zwischen Tochter und Vater.

and afterwards also the love between daughter and father.

Ja und zwar vor allem das, würde ich sagen.

Yes, and especially that, I would say.

Also diese innere Reise von Vater und Tochter zueinander in diesen fünf Tagen

So this inner journey of father and daughter towards each other over these five days.

ist ja die eigentliche Reise, die wir sehen

is the actual journey that we see

und nicht die Reise örtlich

and not the journey locally

diese drei Städte in Polen.

these three cities in Poland.

Ja, sie kommt mit einer großen Bürde.

Yes, she comes with a heavy burden.

Man weiß heute, dass die zweite Generation das transgenerationale Trauma in sich trug.

It is known today that the second generation carried the transgenerational trauma within itself.

Diesen Begriff gab es noch nicht, als Lili Brett damals die Bücher geschrieben hat.

This term did not exist when Lili Brett wrote the books back then.

Heute ist das wissenschaftlich belegt.

Today it is scientifically proven.

Das heißt, sie spürt ein ganz großes Leid und Schmerz,

That means she feels a great deal of suffering and pain.

das ihrer Eltern, ohne wirklich Begriffe dafür zu haben.

that of their parents, without really having terms for it.

Aber wir sehen es ihr ja an.

But we can tell just by looking at her.

Wir sehen, sie ist zu Liebe oder zu ihrer Beziehung.

We see she is devoted to love or to her relationship.

Eigentlich ein Mann, den sie scheinbar noch liebt.

Actually, a man that she seemingly still loves.

Den hat sie aber trotzdem verlassen.

But she left him anyway.

Weil sie diese Nähe gar nicht ertragen hat.

Because she could not endure this closeness at all.

Sie struggelt und kämpft mit dem Essen und hat da ein relativ gestörtes Verhältnis dazu.

She struggles and fights with food and has a relatively disturbed relationship with it.

Sie sammelt eben obsessiv dann da diese Gegenstände in Polen,

She is obsessively collecting these items in Poland.

um überhaupt irgendwas mit nach Hause zu bringen.

to bring anything home at all.

Und so sehen wir ihr zu und denken ja natürlich auch,

And so we watch her and of course we think,

Mensch, so soll doch ein Leben eigentlich nicht weitergehen.

Man, life shouldn't really continue like this.

Und der Film zeigt uns auch, dass es so nicht weitergehen wird,

And the film also shows us that it cannot go on like this.

sondern dass die Reise natürlich auch bei ihr etwas verbessern und verändern wird.

but that the journey will of course also improve and change something for her.

Ich würde schon sagen,

I would say,

dass sich eine Heilung ist ein zu großes Wort,

that a cure is too big a word,

aber naja, ein Verständnis füreinander auf jeden Fall entwickelt hat

but well, a mutual understanding has definitely developed

und dass sie vielleicht ganz anders zurückkehrt nach New York,

and that she might come back to New York quite differently,

als sie hierher gekommen ist.

Sie haben diese Geschichte nicht selbst geschrieben,

You did not write this story yourself,

anders als viele andere Geschichten für ihre Filme,

unlike many other stories for their films,

zum Beispiel für das Antifa-Drama und morgen die ganze Welt,

ihren Kinoerstling, was am Ende zählt oder die Fernsehserie KDW.

Da haben sie selbst mit ihrem Mann zusammen die Drehbücher entwickelt.

There, they developed the scripts together with her husband.

Warum haben sie es hier anders gemacht?

Why did they do it differently here?

Einfacher wird die Arbeit ja vermutlich nicht.

The work probably won't get any easier.

Wenn man einen 700-Seiten-Roman zur Vorlage nimmt.

When one takes a 700-page novel as a template.

Naja, die Geschichte, wie ich sie eben vorfand als Buch,

Well, the story as I found it in the book,

hat mich eben so sehr interessiert, dass ich sie gerne adaptieren wollte.

It interested me so much that I wanted to adapt it.

Wir hatten auch zuvor schon einmal einen Roman zusammen adaptiert.

We had previously adapted a novel together once before.

Hannahs Reise hieß der Film, der beruhte auf dem Roman.

The film was called Hannah's Journey, which was based on the novel.

Das war der gute Teil des Tages von Theresa Beuerlein.

That was the good part of the day from Theresa Beuerlein.

Wir kannten also schon so eine Adaptionsarbeit.

So we were already familiar with such an adaptation work.

Und interessanterweise ist das gar nicht weniger Arbeit.

And interestingly, it's actually no less work at all.

Vielleicht ist es sogar mehr Arbeit.

Maybe it’s even more work.

Warum?

Why?

Man arbeitet ein Stück weit,

One works to a certain extent,

sogar zu dritt.

even in threes.

Man möchte ja nicht ohne Einverständnis der Autorin jetzt einen Film erschaffen aus einem Drehbuch.

One would not want to create a film from a screenplay without the author's consent.

Das heißt, diesen ganzen Prozess mit Lili Brett gemeinsam,

That means this whole process together with Lili Brett,

wir beiden als Autoren,

we both as authors,

das hat sich doch über viele Fassungen gezogen.

That has dragged on through many versions.

Es ist nicht schwer auszurechnen,

It is not difficult to calculate,

wenn wir noch mal jetzt zu ihrem Film Julia von Heinz zurückkommen,

if we come back now to her film Julia by Heinz,

und das wollen wir natürlich,

and we want that, of course,

wenn der Vater Eddick Rothwax den Holocaust überlebt hat,

und zwar nicht als Baby, sondern als junger Erwachsener,

der noch im Ghetto geheiratet hat.

Nicht in Polen.

In Polen ist alles so in gutem Zustand,

zumindest das meiste.

at least most of it.

Also gerade in Lodz gibt es kaum noch solche Ecken,

So there are hardly any such corners left in Lodz.

wie wir sie zeigen.

Vielleicht ein paar Hinterhöfe.

Maybe a few backyards.

Die sieht man dann auch doch im Film.

You can see that in the film as well.

Wir haben vieles gefunden und auferstehen lassen können,

We have found and been able to resurrect many things,

hier in Berlin.

Viele Innenräume vor allem.

Wir haben in Halle, in Gera,

ja, in diesen Orten haben wir immer wieder kleine Ecken,

wo wir es insgesamt dann so zusammen puzzeln konnten.

Wie haben Sie denn überhaupt gewusst,

in welche Richtung Sie rekonstruieren müssen?

Ich weiß nicht, ob Sie 1991 mal in Polen gewesen sind,

I don't know if you were in Poland in 1991,

aber wenn man sich das heute anschaut,

but when you look at it today,

ich finde es mit das Erstaunlichste an diesem Film,

I find it to be one of the most astounding things about this film,

diese Zeitreise,

this time travel,

es ist unglaublich weit weg.

It is incredibly far away.

Es gibt da zum Beispiel eine Szene,

da gehen die beiden dann in die alte Wohnung der Familie,

da drin haust eine furchtbar arme Familie.

Unsere Art Director, also unsere Szenenbildner,

Our art directors, that is, our set designers,

zwei Polen, eine Pole in ein Pole,

two poles, a pole in a pole,

die machen zusammen Szenenbild von vielen tollen polnischen Filmen,

they create the set design for many great Polish films,

auch historischen Filmen,

also historical films,

hatten damals diese Zeit noch erlebt,

had experienced this time back then,

wussten ja auch, dass wir vieles in Deutschland drehen würden

They also knew that we would be filming a lot in Germany.

und sind mit uns in ausführliche Motivtouren aufgebrochen

and set out on detailed motivation tours with us

in die Regionen und haben diese Dinge gesucht

und auch für uns mit entschieden,

ja, das passt.

Yes, that works.

So sah es aus, hier sollten wir eine Drehbahn tragen.

Ohne die beiden hätten wir es sicherlich nicht geschafft,

Läuft Ihr Film auch in Polen?

Ich könnte mir vorstellen,

I could imagine,

das Land ist wirklich in erschreckenden Tönen,

gut, da kommen die Polen natürlich nicht dazu,

well, the Poles certainly don't get a chance to do that,

aber es gibt auch vereinzelte Polen, die Sie zeigen,
