Bettina Montasem war 40, als sie das Theater gründete und über diesen Drahtseilakt wollen wir heute in meinen Sonntagsfragen erzählen, wobei wir zunächst mal eine lange Autofahrt hinter uns bringen müssen, denn von Köln bis Arak sind es knapp 5000 Kilometer, drei Tage am Anfang über die A3, sagt das Navi. Dann ist man in der Stadt, in der du aufgewachsen bist. Holst du uns mal die Kulisse von Arak auf die Bühne?

Bettina Montasem was 40 when she founded the theater, and today we want to talk about this tightrope act in my Sunday questions, although we first have to complete a long car journey, because it's almost 5000 kilometers from Cologne to Arak, three days initially via the A3, the GPS says. Then you arrive in the city where you grew up. Could you bring us the backdrop of Arak on stage?

Oh, das ist ja eine schöne Einladung. Was sehe ich? Ich sehe Ockerfarben und Sackfarben.

Oh, that's a nice invitation. What do I see? I see ochre colors and sack colors.

Das Land, sehr flach, nicht besonders hügelig, ein unglaublich weiter Himmel und diese Sonne, dieses Sonnenlicht, das habe ich, glaube ich, noch nie irgendwo anders gesehen als da.

The country, very flat, not particularly hilly, an incredibly wide sky and this sun, this sunlight, I think I have never seen anywhere else but there.

Früher hieß der Iran Persien und Arak hieß Sultanabad. Das klingt ja sehr nach Tausend und einer Nacht. Ist irgendwas Märchenhaftes da geblieben?

In the past, Iran was called Persia, and Arak was called Sultanabad. That sounds very much like One Thousand and One Nights. Is there anything magical that has remained?

Je nachdem, wo man da ist, sind das so relativ niedrige Lehmhäuser, wobei ich der Ehrlichkeit halber sagen muss, das ist ja jetzt schon ein paar Jahre her, schon 45 Jahre.

Depending on where you are, these are relatively low clay houses, although to be honest, I have to say that this was already a few years ago, 45 years ago to be exact.

Also sind das Kindheitserinnerungen und da waren die Gebäude flach und diese flachen Dächer haben den großen Charme, dass man im Sommer oben auf diesen Dächern liegt, weil es damals schon so heiß war, dass man eben in den Zimmern nicht mehr schlafen konnte.

So these are childhood memories, and the buildings were flat, and these flat roofs have the great charm that in summer you lie on top of these roofs, because it was already so hot back then that you couldn't sleep in the rooms anymore.

Aber natürlich, wenn man nach Isfahan geht und nach Shiraz, mein Vater hat ja Elektrizitätswerke auf dem Land gebaut, das heißt, wir haben viel vom Iran gesehen und da sieht man das tatsächlich oft, die Minaretten in den großen Städten.

But of course, when you go to Isfahan and Shiraz, my father built power plants in the countryside, which means we've seen a lot of Iran, and you actually often see the minarets in the big cities.

Und ansonsten eben sehr flache Gebäude.

And otherwise, very flat buildings.

Ein Gebäude, das erinnert mich eigentlich immer so an meine Fantasie von Bukhara und Samarkand.

A building that always reminds me of my imagination of Bukhara and Samarkand.

Kleidung, wie sah die aus?

Clothing, what did it look like?

Ah, sehr unterschiedlich. Also wir haben eine Zeit lang am Kaspischen Meer gelebt und da waren damals Frauen wirklich sehr tief verschleiert und dann in Teheran, aber auch in Shiraz und Isfahan sehr modern.

Ah, very different. We lived by the Caspian Sea for a while and there, women were really very heavily veiled at that time, while in Tehran, as well as in Shiraz and Isfahan, they were very modern.

Das waren die 60er und 70er mit Miniröcken, also vollkommen europäisch.

Those were the 60s and 70s with miniskirts, so completely European.

Wo hast du als Kind am liebsten gespielt in dieser Stadt oder in dem Viertel?

Where did you like to play the most as a child in this city or in the neighborhood?

Meine Lieblingserinnerung ist, da war ich so drei, da hatten wir einen Koch, denn meine Eltern waren wirklich sehr wohlhabend und unser Koch vorerst, der ging mit uns an den Rand der Wüste, mit uns meine ich meine Schwester Verena und mich und das ist meine Lieblingskindheitserinnerung, da hat er am Rand der Wüste in so einen Sandhaufen reingegriffen und von Wildbienen Honig rausgeholt und dann haben wir die frischen Waben ausschlecken dürfen, das war wirklich wunderbar.

My favorite memory is when I was about three years old, we had a cook because my parents were very wealthy, and our cook took us to the edge of the desert, by "us" I mean my sister Verena and me, and that is my favorite childhood memory. He reached into a sand pile at the edge of the desert and brought out honey from wild bees, and then we were allowed to lick the fresh honeycomb; it was really wonderful.

Oder es auf eine Palme, wirklich auf eine Palme.

Or put it on a palm tree, really on a palm tree.

Und dann hat er uns frische Datteln gepflückt, das war toll.

And then he picked fresh dates for us, it was great.

Wer einen Koch hat, hat auch jemanden, der sauber macht. War es für dich schwierig, selber zu kochen und zu putzen?

Whoever has a cook also has someone who cleans. Was it difficult for you to cook and clean by yourself?

Ich hasse Putzen immer noch. Ja, das stimmt, das ist wahr. Wir hatten einen Koch, einen Chauffeur und eine Putzfrau und auch ein Kindermädchen und irgendwie kann ich mich nicht daran gewöhnen, seit 45 Jahren nicht, dass ich keine Putzfrau mehr habe.

I still hate cleaning. Yes, that's true, it is true. We had a cook, a chauffeur, and a cleaning lady, and also a nanny, and somehow I just can't get used to not having a cleaning lady for 45 years.

WDR 2 mit den Sonntagsfragen und Bettina Montasem, die im Frühjahr 1979 mit ihrer Familie vom Iran nach Deutschland fliehen musste, weil Ayatollah Khomeini die Macht ergriffen hatte und weil deine Familie eng mit dem Schah, also mit Reza Pahlavi, verbunden war. Wie eng war deine Familie?

WDR 2 with the Sunday questions and Bettina Montasem, who had to flee from Iran to Germany in the spring of 1979 because Ayatollah Khomeini had taken power and because her family was closely connected to the Shah, namely Reza Pahlavi. How closely was your family connected?

Sehr eng. Mein Großvater war Innenminister unter dem alten Schah und mein Großonkel war Staatssekretär, mein Direktoronkel Konsul in Gabun.

Very close. My grandfather was the Minister of the Interior under the old Shah, and my granduncle was the Secretary of State, my director uncle was the consul in Gabon.

Und mein Vater?

And my father?

Mein Vater hatte sehr, sehr gute Verbindungen zum Fernsehen und zum Radio. Sein wirklich liebster Freund und bester Freund war Chef der Fernsehanstalt und das bedeutete für uns, das war wirklich ehrlich gesagt komplett chancenlos. Wir sind wirklich sofort raus, mussten auch raus, die Familie stand auf der Liste.

My father had very, very good connections to television and radio. His really best friend was the head of the television station, and that meant for us, to be honest, it was completely hopeless. We were really immediately out, had to get out, the family was on the list.

Wobei ich sagen muss, wir waren ja sehr privilegiert. Meine Mutter ist ja Deutsche, wir konnten wirklich mit der ersten Lufthansa-Maschine, die deutsche Staatsbürger nach Deutschland brachte, im März 1979 einfach nach Zürich fliegen.

I have to say that we were very privileged. My mother is German, and we were able to simply fly to Zurich on the first Lufthansa plane that brought German citizens back to Germany in March 1979.

Und dann bei meiner deutschen Großmutter am Bodensee unterkommen. Wir haben es da wirklich sehr, sehr gut getroffen.

And then staying with my German grandmother by Lake Constance. We really found it very, very nice there.

Woran habt ihr gemerkt, dass ihr auf der roten Liste standet?

How did you notice that you were on the red list?

Ich war damals noch Kind, das kann ich nicht sagen. Ich erinnere mich aber sehr, sehr intensiv daran, dass mein Vater eines Tages nach Hause kam in unsere Wohnung im Norden Teherans und dann war wirklich helle Aufregung und wir stehen auf der Liste und jetzt, da war auch keine große Diskussion mehr.

I was still a child back then, so I can't say much. However, I remember very vividly that one day my father came home to our apartment in northern Tehran, and there was really a lot of excitement, and we were on the list, and then there was really no more big discussion about it.

Was muss man, Bettina, über den Schah wissen, um den beurteilen zu können?

What does one need to know about the Shah, Bettina, in order to be able to judge him?

Naja, also mein Wissen ist ja wirklich ein Kinderwissen und irgendwie habe ich mich interessanterweise auch eine bestimmte Art und Weise auch als Erwachsene geweigert, da nochmal genauer hinzugucken.

Well, my knowledge is really just child's knowledge, and interestingly, I have also somehow refused to take a closer look at it as an adult.

Woran ich mich wirklich sehr gut erinnern kann, ist, dass meine Cousinen und Cousins, unsere Familie ist sehr, sehr, sehr groß und einige meiner Cousinen und Cousins waren damals Studenten, die haben mit dem Umsturz wahnsinnig viel Hoffnung verbunden.

What I really remember very well is that my cousins, our family is very, very, very large, and some of my cousins were students at the time, who associated the upheaval with an incredible amount of hope.

Das waren Kommunisten oder sie waren...

They were communists or they were...

Teilweise auch einfach nur sehr links und hatten das Gefühl, mit Rumänien kommt jetzt ein gerechteres System, das die Armen besser versorgt, denn ich kann mich natürlich schon daran erinnern, dass ich auch extreme Armut gesehen habe in meiner Kindheit.

Partially, it was also simply very leftist, and they had the feeling that with Romania, a fairer system was coming that would better provide for the poor, because I can certainly remember having seen extreme poverty in my childhood.

Und natürlich haben meine Eltern davon profitiert, denn das hört sich so toll an mit dem Chauffeur und dem Koch, aber das waren natürlich Menschen, die große Familien zu versorgen hatten und für die dann dieses Einkommen die Möglichkeit war, die Familie durchzubringen.

And of course my parents benefited from it, because it sounds so great with the chauffeur and the cook, but these were of course people who had large families to support, and for them this income was the opportunity to provide for their family.

Hast du Erinnerungen an die Flucht?

Do you have memories of the escape?

Ja, total.

Yes, totally.

Total intensiv.

Totally intense.

Ja, ja, ich erinnere mich sehr, sehr gut daran.

Yes, yes, I remember that very, very well.

Mein Bruder war damals sehr klein, der war gerade geboren, der war drei Monate alt und als wir in Teheran in das Flugzeug stiegen, fing mein Bruder an zu weinen und hörte überhaupt nicht mehr auf.

My brother was very small back then, he had just been born, he was three months old, and when we boarded the plane in Tehran, my brother started crying and just wouldn't stop.

Der schrie die ganze Zeit und ich glaube, dieser Säugling hat eben diese enorme Anspannung von uns allen sehr intensiv gespürt und zum Ausdruck gebracht.

He screamed the whole time, and I believe this infant felt this immense tension from all of us very intensely and expressed it.

Mein Vater blieb dann noch in Teheran, der konnte nicht mit, also nur meine Mutter, meine Schwester, mein Bruder und ich.

My father stayed in Tehran, he couldn't come, so only my mother, my sister, my brother, and I went.

Und mein Vater kam dann acht Monate...

And my father came then eight months...

Acht Monate später auch nach Deutschland und ich erinnere mich an eine unglaublich gedrückte, verlorene Atmosphäre voller Angst und Haltlosigkeit. Ja, schön war das nicht.

Eight months later, also in Germany, and I remember an incredibly oppressive, lost atmosphere full of fear and helplessness. Yes, it wasn't beautiful.

Und wie haben die diese Überforderung kompensiert?

And how did they compensate for this overload?

Meine deutsche Familie hat sehr unter dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gelitten. Ich muss auch sagen, die deutsche Familie ist eine industrielle Familie aus der Bodenseeregion und mein deutscher Großvater war ein enorm hohes SS-Tier, Heinz Kling.

My German family suffered greatly during the Second World War. I must also say, the German family is an industrial family from the Lake Constance region and my German grandfather was a very high-ranking SS member, Heinz Kling.

Für den gibt es wahnsinnigerweise immer noch eine Fan-Community, die diesen SS-Menschen feiern, der von Hitler persönlich das Goldene Kreuz bekommen hat. Also da gibt es noch viel zu erzählen über die SS-Vergangenheit.

There is still an insane fan community for him that celebrates this SS man who personally received the Golden Cross from Hitler. So there is still much to tell about the SS past.

Und der deutsche Teil der Familie hat den Zweiten Weltkrieg schon nicht gut weggesteckt. Das heißt, da war schon Alkoholismus bei meiner direkten Oma und dann bei meiner Urgroßmutter.

And the German part of the family did not cope well with the Second World War. That means there was already alcoholism with my direct grandmother and then with my great-grandmother.

Und als mein Vater dann nach Deutschland nachkam, der war ohnehin schon auch im Iran Suchtaffin.

And when my father then came to Germany, he was already in Iran a junkie anyway.

Aber das brach dann in Deutschland wirklich voll ins Aus, weil er war dann von dem sehr erfolgreichen Ingenieur und sehr gut vernetzten Unternehmer, war er in Deutschland einfach nur ein Ausländer, der gebrochen Deutsch spricht und der ganze Stolz war dahin.

But then it really fell apart in Germany, because he went from being a very successful engineer and a well-connected entrepreneur to just being a foreigner who speaks broken German, and all his pride was gone.

Als sie zehn Jahre alt war, floh mein Sonntagsfragen-Gast Bettina Montasem mit ihrer Familie aus dem Iran nach Deutschland zur Großmutter nach Adolfzell, also ins Ländler an den Bodensee.

When she was ten years old, my Sunday Questions guest Bettina Montasem fled from Iran to Germany with her family to her grandmother in Adolfzell, thus to the countryside by Lake Constance.

Wie war das da für dich? Das war eine fremde Umgebung.

How was it for you there? It was a strange environment.

War das eine fremde Umgebung und auch fremdes Essen oder warst du das eigentlich alle schon gewöhnt, weil du ja eine deutsche Mutter hattest?

Was it a foreign environment and also foreign food, or were you actually already used to it because you had a German mother?

Deutschland ist für mich der Geruch von frischem Gras. Und woran ich mich bis heute nicht gewöhnen kann, ist das Gefühl von Frieden.

Germany is for me the smell of fresh grass. And what I still can't get used to is the feeling of peace.

Also ich habe das immer noch und ich bin ziemlich sicher, das geht auch nicht mehr weg, dass ich immer wieder, wenn ich den Geruch von frischem Gras rieche, denke, ist das komisch, hier gibt es ja gar keine Bomben und keine schreienden Männer.

So I still have that, and I'm pretty sure it won't go away, that every time I smell fresh grass, I think, isn't it strange, there are no bombs and no screaming men here.

Das kommt in so einem Moment hoch und dann bin ich da.

That comes up in a moment like that and then I'm there.

Ich bin sehr dankbar dafür, hier zu sein. Ich konnte gut Deutsch sprechen. Ich bin zweisprachig groß geworden. Wir waren regelmäßig am Bodensee. Meine deutsche Oma ist auch mein Lieblingsmensch. Also da war ganz viel Gefühl von Vertrautheit, aber es ist eine Aufgabe zu wissen, dass man nie wieder zurück kann.

I am very grateful to be here. I could speak German well. I grew up bilingual. We regularly spent time at Lake Constance. My German grandmother is also my favorite person. So there was a lot of feeling of familiarity, but it is a challenge to know that you can never go back.

Die Sprache ist weg, alle Freunde sind weg und plötzlich stand ich da am Bodensee und alles Vertraute, was sich aufgebaut hat in den Ferien mit dem Gefühl von, ach, hier kenne ich mich gut aus, aber es geht ja wieder nach Hause, war dann plötzlich das Zuhause.

The language is gone, all friends are gone, and suddenly I stood there at Lake Constance, and everything familiar that had built up during the holidays with the feeling of, oh, I know this place well, but I'm going home again, suddenly became home.

Und dann habe ich eben gemerkt, dass die Kultur so anders ist. Also die persische Kultur, das sage ich mal ganz bewusst persisch, dazu gehört zum Beispiel das Komplimente machen. Das ist ein wichtiger Teil der Kommunikation.

And then I realized that the culture is so different. So the Persian culture, I consciously say Persian, includes, for example, giving compliments. This is an important part of communication.

Ach, hast du ein schönes Kleid an und du siehst ja gut aus und so. Und ich erinnere mich lebhaft daran, dass ich in der Tegginger Grundschule in Radolfzell angekommen bin und meiner Klassenlehrerin gesagt habe, sie haben ja eine schöne Bluse an.

Oh, you are wearing a beautiful dress and you look great and all. And I vividly remember arriving at Tegginger Elementary School in Radolfzell and telling my teacher that she was wearing a lovely blouse.

Okay.

Okay.

Und diese Klasse fing an zu lachen. Ich wusste überhaupt nicht, worüber. Für mich war das total normal. Und ich erinnere mich an dieses Gefühl von sehr beschämt sein, weil sie hat darauf nicht gut reagiert.

And this class started laughing. I had no idea what about. For me, it was completely normal. And I remember that feeling of being very embarrassed because she didn't react well to it.

Wie hat sie denn reagiert?

How did she react?

Ja, sehr, sehr abwertend. Ich denke, in ihrem Kontext muss das eine Übergriffigkeit gewesen sein. Ja, so ein kleiner Dotz, der da so steht. Das war schwierig.

Yes, very, very derogatory. I think, in their context, it must have been an overreach. Yes, just a little dotz standing there. That was difficult.

Dann kann ich mich bis heute nicht gewöhnen. Eine der eindringendsten Situationen ist, mein Vater und ich klingeln beieinander.

Then I still can't get used to it today. One of the most intense situations is when my father and I ring each other's doorbells.

Nachbarn, er will sich einen Hammer ausleihen. 18 Uhr abends. Die Tür geht auf. Wir werden reingebeten und stehen am Abendbrottisch der Nachbarn, die gerade Abendbrot essen.

Neighbors, he wants to borrow a hammer. 6 PM in the evening. The door opens. We are invited in and stand at the neighbors' dinner table, who are currently having their evening meal.

Und dann fragte mein Vater nach einem Hammer und wir wurden nicht gebeten, uns zu setzen. Wir wurden nicht eingeladen, mit zu essen. Wir standen da und ich habe das überhaupt nicht begriffen. Das würde in Persien nie vorkommen. Nie. Da muss man mitessen.

And then my father asked for a hammer and we were not asked to sit down. We were not invited to eat together. We just stood there and I didn't understand it at all. That would never happen in Persia. Never. You have to eat together.

Habt ihr zwar den Hammer bekommen, aber kein Gürkchen.

You may have received the hammer, but no little cucumber.

Hat die Oma das ein bisschen aufgefangen, indem sie dich schön bekocht hat mit lauter Leckereien für die Bettina?

Did Grandma kind of make up for it by cooking lovely treats for Bettina?

Nee, meine Oma war eine sehr taffe Frau. Die hat die Familie alleine durch den Krieg gebracht. Der SS-Mann war irgendwo in Stalingrad und kam dann tatsächlich zu Fuß. Und meine Großmutter war eine unglaublich tolle Frau, aber die konnte unfassbar schlecht kochen.

No, my grandmother was a very tough woman. She got the family through the war on her own. The SS man was somewhere in Stalingrad and then actually came back on foot. And my grandmother was an incredibly wonderful woman, but she could cook unbelievably poorly.

Was sie gut konnte, war der berühmte Sechseierkuchen. Aber sonst war sie auf diese Art und Weise nicht liebevoll.

What she was good at was the famous six-egg cake. But otherwise, she was not affectionate in that way.

Du warst ja nun gezwungen, schnell Freundinnen und Freunde zu finden und dich anzupassen. Das ist dir dann auch nicht so leicht gefallen, weil eben die Unterschiede so groß waren?

You were forced to quickly make friends and adapt. That wasn’t easy for you because the differences were so significant, right?

Das ist gar nicht gelungen. Also ich bin an sich ein sehr redseliger Mensch. Ich bin lebendig und ich benutze meine Hände zum Erzählen. Und dann, als ich dann in der Grundschule in Redolfzell ankam, habe ich das selber gar nicht gemerkt, dass ich aufgehört habe zu sprechen, bis mich damals ein Klassenkamerad angesprochen hat,

That didn’t turn out well at all. I am actually a very talkative person. I am lively and I use my hands to tell stories. And then, when I arrived at elementary school in Redolfzell, I didn’t even realize that I had stopped talking until a classmate approached me back then.

dem ich das bis heute wirklich, also ich bin dem so dankbar, der mich auf dem Flur irgendwann ansprach und gesagt hat, dir geht es nicht gut, du sprichst ja gar nicht. Der war ja damals auch neun oder so.

to whom I am really thankful until today, I mean, I am so grateful to the person who spoke to me in the hallway at some point and said, you don't look well, you aren’t talking at all. He was also around nine years old back then.

Und dieser Spiegel von außen, der hat mir nochmal klargemacht, dass es mir wirklich nicht gut geht. Das hat aber außer mir niemand gemerkt. Die ganze Familie war mit sich einfach sehr beschäftigt und ich als Älteste hatte ja auch übertragen bekommen von meinem Vater die Aufgabe, mich um die Geschwister zu kümmern. Da war kein Raum da.

And that mirror from the outside made it clear to me once again that I really wasn’t doing well. But no one else noticed it. The whole family was simply very busy with themselves, and as the oldest, I had been given the task by my father to take care of my siblings. There was no room for that.

Und als wir dann ins Rheinland kamen, hatte ich eben drei jüngere Geschwister. Meine Mutter bekam nochmal eine Tochter. Und es kamen noch zwei Kinder dazu, meine Cousins, denn deren Mutter war in einer Straßenkontrolle erschossen worden.

And when we arrived in the Rhineland, I had three younger siblings. My mother had another daughter. Two more children joined us, my cousins, because their mother had been shot during a traffic control.

Es kamen zwei Kinder, die schwer traumatisiert waren, denn die saßen mit im Auto, als sie erschossen wurde. Und dann war ich plötzlich Mama von fünf Kindern. Und da war dann eben, was mir Halt und Rettung gegeben hat.

Two children came who were severely traumatized because they were in the car when she was shot. And then I suddenly became a mother of five children. And it was that which gave me support and rescue.

Und dann war die Theatergruppe in der Schule.

And then the theater group was at the school.

Wieder zwei am Sonntagmorgen. Als Bettina Montasem mit 40 Jahren das Orania-Theater in Köln gründete, da hatte sie ihre Flucht vom Iran nach Deutschland hinter sich, die Schulzeit, die harte in Radolfzell und in Langenfeld im Rheinland, ein Orientalistik-Philosophie- und Germanistik-Studium begonnen und zwei Töchter zur Welt gebracht.

Another two on Sunday morning. When Bettina Montasem founded the Orania Theater in Cologne at the age of 40, she had already left her flight from Iran to Germany behind, completed her school years, the difficult ones in Radolfzell and in Langenfeld in the Rhineland, begun a degree in Oriental Studies, Philosophy, and German Studies, and given birth to two daughters.

Da hätte ich jetzt gesagt, Bettina, das reicht erstmal. Aber du wolltest mehr Theater.

Then I would have said, Bettina, that's enough for now. But you wanted more theater.

Ich liebe das Theater. Es ist lieb.

I love the theater. It is lovely.

Es ist in mir drin. Und ich war viele Jahre nicht im Theater. Ich bin ja die meiste Zeit alleinerziehend gewesen. Und ich wollte immer Regisseurin werden. Und als Regisseurin arbeitet man eben sehr viel. Das geht nicht alleine mit zwei Kindern.

It is inside me. And I haven't been to the theater for many years. I have been a single parent most of the time. And I always wanted to become a director. And as a director, you work a lot. You can't do that alone with two children.

Und als ich 40 war, habe ich gedacht, so, also jetzt kannst du die ganze Zeit über dein Leben jammern und was du alles hättest machen können und so. Oder du machst jetzt einfach mal. Und dann habe ich einfach gemacht und habe ein Privattheater gegründet.

And when I turned 40, I thought, okay, now you can complain about your life all the time and what you could have done, and so on. Or you can just do it now. And then I just did it and founded a private theater.

Aber wovon hast du da gelebt? Also ein Privattheater gründen, dafür braucht man Kohle.

But what did you live on? I mean, starting a private theater requires money.

Ja.

Yes.

Das war auch so. Also ich habe einen Brotjob gehabt an der Universität zu Köln. Und ich habe da wirklich alles reingesteckt. Ich hatte zwei Lebensversicherungen und einen Bausparvertrag und das ist da alles drin.

That was the case as well. I had a regular job at the University of Cologne. And I really invested everything into it. I had two life insurance policies and a building savings contract, and everything is in there.

Was war der Brotjob?

What was the bread job?

Sekretärin. Ich habe mein Studium abbrechen müssen, weil ich meine Kinder versorgt habe nach der Scheidung. Und dann habe ich eine Weiterbildung gemacht zur Fremdsprachenkorrespondentin Englisch und Französisch. Das ist auch mein einziger wirklich zertifizierter Beruf.

Secretary. I had to stop my studies because I took care of my children after the divorce. Then I completed further training to become a foreign language correspondent in English and French. This is also my only certified profession.

Und dann habe ich an der Uni als Lehrstuhlsekretärin.

And then I worked as a department secretary at the university.

Und dann hast du gesagt, das ist irgendwie alles noch nicht genug. Ich brauche noch ein bisschen mehr. Und hast du alleine das Theater gegründet oder hattest du Leute, die mitgemacht haben?

And then you said, that's somehow not enough yet. I need a little more. Did you found the theater by yourself or did you have people who participated?

Nee, nee. Ich habe das alleine gegründet. Und es war so, dass wenn so viel in einem wohnt, was raus möchte, wird man krank, wenn es nicht raus darf. Und deswegen empfinde ich das als Privileg, dass ich mich ausdrücken darf und dass ich machen darf, was mich wirklich sehr, sehr zufrieden macht. Auch wenn es natürlich manchmal schon ganz schön anstrengend ist mit so einem Privattheater.

No, no. I founded it on my own. And it was like this: if so much is inside you that wants to come out, you become ill if it can't come out. That's why I consider it a privilege to be able to express myself and to do what truly makes me very, very happy. Even though it can certainly be quite exhausting at times with a private theater.

Aber du hattest ein bisschen Schultheater-Erfahrung.

But you had a little bit of school theater experience.

Ja, ich habe auch als junge Frau im Rheinischen Landestheater in Neuss gearbeitet und dann nochmal im Landestheater in Dienstlaken und in Langenfeld in der Kulturfabrik, heute Schaustall.

Yes, I also worked as a young woman at the Rhineland State Theatre in Neuss and then again at the State Theatre in Duisburg and in Langenfeld at the Culture Factory, which is now called Schaustall.

Auf der Bühne oder als?

On stage or as?

Nein, immer im Hintergrund. Ich wollte immer Regisseurin werden. Das heißt, ich war immer in der Regieassistenz oder eben in der Veranstaltungsleitung oder im Veranstaltungsmanagement. Das ist das, was mich sehr, sehr zufrieden macht.

No, always in the background. I always wanted to become a director. That means I was always in assistant directing or in event management or event coordination. That is what makes me very, very happy.

Ich finde das so mutig, dann zu sagen, ja, jetzt gründe ich ein Theater.

I think it's so brave to then say, yes, now I'm starting a theater.

Ja, ja, das habe ich schon oft gehört. Und ich habe dazu immer nur zu sagen, es ist wie beim Kinderkriegen. Man weiß vorher auch nicht, was passiert.

Yes, yes, I've heard that many times before. And I always say, it's like having children. You don't know what will happen beforehand.

Das war so. Ich habe inszeniert und das hat mich sehr glücklich gemacht. Und irgendwann dachte ich, also du musst das jetzt einfach wieder machen. Fertig, jetzt machst du es einfach.

It was like that. I staged it, and that made me very happy. And at some point I thought, well, you just have to do it again now. That's it, just go ahead and do it.

Und dein Konzept für dieses Theater?

And your concept for this theater?

Gar kein Konzept. Blind links rein. Einfach so. Einfach machen. Und als ich das dann aber angefangen habe, dann habe ich angefangen, auch wirklich alles Wissen mir dazu zu erarbeiten.

No concept at all. Just blindly jumping in. Just like that. Just do it. And when I started doing that, I began to really acquire all the knowledge about it.

Also ich habe über die KfW BWL-Kenntnis mir erworben. Ich habe viele, viele Jahre Unternehmensberater an meiner Seite gehabt. Ich kann jetzt Kosten- und Finanzierungspläne schreiben.

So I have acquired business administration knowledge through the KfW. I have had many, many years of experience with management consultants by my side. I can now write cost and financing plans.

Und ich glaube, dass ich als Mensch auch jemand bin, der am liebsten lernt beim Tun.

And I believe that as a person, I am someone who prefers to learn by doing.

Aber du wolltest ja die Leute in das Theater locken. Womit?

But you wanted to lure people into the theater. With what?

Ich habe angefangen mit Kindertheater. Und meine Kinder haben dann auch schon immer auf der Bühne gestanden. Rosa und Lea. Und die waren damals sieben und neun.

I started with children's theater. And my children have always stood on stage as well. Rosa and Lea. They were seven and nine at the time.

Und waren die Feen in einem kleinen Märchen, das ich gemacht habe. Und da gibt es immer noch die Familiengeschichte meiner armen Töchter.

And the fairies were in a little fairy tale that I made. And there is still the family story of my poor daughters.

Die mussten eine Stunde lang auf- und abgehen üben. Also damit es einfach ordentlich ist. Auftreten, abtreten. Jetzt können sie es auch.

They had to practice going up and down for an hour. Just to make it orderly. Entering, exiting. Now they can do it too.

Aber so zu Weihnachten kriege ich das immer auf das Butterbrot geschmiert.

But at Christmas, I always get that spread on my bread.

Da kannst du auf- und abtreten vor dem Weihnachtsbaum.

You can stomp up and down in front of the Christmas tree.

Ja, genau.

Die Startbedingungen fürs Orania Theater in Köln waren jetzt nicht optimal. Aber die Gründerin Bettina Montasem hat sich damals vor sieben Jahren gedacht, ich kann jetzt jammern oder machen.

The starting conditions for the Orania Theater in Cologne were not optimal. But the founder Bettina Montasem thought seven years ago, I can either complain or take action.

Und dann hat sie gemacht. Gab es Theatererlebnisse und Eindrücke aus der Kindheit im Iran, die du mitgebracht und verarbeitet hast?

And then she did it. Were there theater experiences and impressions from childhood in Iran that you brought and processed?

Ja, als ich sieben war, waren wir in Teheran in der Oper. Und da gab es das Nussknacker Ballett von Tchaikovsky.

Yes, when I was seven, we were in Tehran at the opera. And there was Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet.

Und ich weiß bis heute noch erstens, wie es da drin riecht, wie dann dieser Vorhang aufgegangen ist.

And I still know to this day, first of all, how it smelled in there, how that curtain opened.

Und dann hat es auf der Bühne geschneit.

And then it snowed on stage.

Meinen großen Traum habe ich mir letztes Jahr erfüllt. Jetzt habe ich auch eine Schneemaschine.

I fulfilled my big dream last year. Now I also have a snow machine.

Und wie hat es gerochen? Süßlich?

And how did it smell? Sweet?

Dieser Geruch zwischen Staub und Vorhang und Menschen und die Hitze von den Scheinwerfern.

This smell between dust and curtain and people and the heat from the spotlights.

Die macht ja so, wenn der Staub so verbrennt, so einen ganz eigenen Geruch.

It creates a completely unique smell when the dust burns like that.

Was wunderbar.

That was wonderful.

Ihr vereint ja in dem Theater Musik und Zirkus.

You combine music and circus in the theater.

Und meine tiefste und schönste Erinnerung ist, dass meine deutsche Oma mit mir in den Zirkus Knie gegangen ist.

And my deepest and most beautiful memory is that my German grandma took me to the Knie circus.

Und ich habe letztes Jahr angefangen, meine eigenen Varieté-Programme zu machen.

And I started making my own variety shows last year.

Und das erste Programm, das ich gemacht habe, war Oper und Zirkus.

And the first program I did was opera and circus.

Und vieles erzählt sich über die Musik.

And a lot is told about the music.

Der Zirkus ist insofern mit gleichberechtigter Partner, als dass alle Geschichten ein musikalisches Motiv haben.

The circus is a partner of equal standing in that all stories have a musical motif.

Und die Zirkusnummern inhaltlich zu demonstrieren.

And to demonstrate the circus acts in terms of content.

In dem Opernprojekt war zum Beispiel aus dem Tannenhäuser eine Arie von Richard Wagner.

In the opera project, for example, there was an aria from Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner.

Die heißt »O du, meine Holder-Abendstern«.

It is called "O you, my lovely evening star."

Und dann fängt der Bariton an zu singen und singt »O du, mein Holder-Abendstern«.

And then the baritone begins to sing and sings "O you, my lovely evening star."

Und es taucht die Luftakrobatik auf, die eben musikalisch zu diesem Zeitpunkt in die Luft steigt.

And the aerial acrobatics appear, which musically takes to the air at this moment.

Und dann die Darstellung des Abendsterns.

And then the depiction of the evening star.

Also es passt sehr, sehr gut zusammen.

So it fits very, very well together.

Die hat ihre Ausbildung an der Alanus-Hochschule abgeschlossen und spielt nicht nur im Orania-Theater,

She completed her training at the Alanus University and not only performs at the Orania Theater,

sondern auch im Theater Oberhausen zurzeit.

but also currently at the Theater Oberhausen.

Lea ist Opernsängerin in Köln.

Lea is an opera singer in Cologne.

Gerade ihren Bachelor abgeschlossen und zu meinem sehr großen Stolz in der Tonhalle in Düsseldorf die Pamina gesungen.

I just completed my Bachelor’s degree and, to my great pride, sang the role of Pamina at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf.

Das heißt, beide sind gut ausgebildete Künstlerinnen.

That means both are well-trained artists.

Und dadurch, dass wir eben das Theater gemeinsam nach und nach aufgebaut haben,

And because we have gradually built the theater together,

sind beide sehr, sehr gute Unternehmerinnen geworden.

have both become very, very good entrepreneurs.

Das Orania-Theater in Köln ist ein Varieté-Haus, das aber keine Revue zeigt, sondern Handlungsvarieté.

Piaf hat ja viele, viele Männer geliebt und nie aufgegeben, an die große Liebe zu glauben.

Piaf loved many, many men and never gave up believing in true love.

Und das sind Stationen, die man da erleben kann.

Mein letztes Programm, das knallrote Gummiboot, war eine Liebeserklärung an Köln und auch an die Liebe.

My last program, the bright red rubber boat, was a love letter to Cologne and also to love.

Und da war die Handlung des Abends.

And there was the action of the evening.

Wir beginnen mit drei Paaren, die sehr klassisch zusammengestellt sind.

We start with three pairs that are very classically put together.

Und der Abend endet, indem dann alles einmal durcheinandergewirbelt ist in einer neuen Konstellation.

Ich habe eben keine kleinen Kinder mehr, sondern erwachsene Frauen,

die selber erwachsene, gut ausgebildete Künstlerinnen sind.

Die sind beide Ende 20, ne?

They are both in their late 20s, right?

Und die einen Standpunkt einnehmen.

Und dann haben wir Generationenkonflikte, wie alle anderen auch.

Wir streiten uns über Gendern und Emanzipation und über was man auf der Bühne sagen darf und nicht.

We are arguing about gendering and emancipation and about what can and cannot be said on stage.

Und ich muss auch sagen, dass es richtig ist, dass meine Töchter sich ihren Platz und ihren Aufgaben beweisen.

And I also have to say that it is right for my daughters to prove themselves in their place and their tasks.

Und dann muss ich natürlich Platz machen. Das geht nicht ohne Reibung.

And then, of course, I have to make room. That doesn't happen without friction.

Die Rosa ist ja vermutlich als Clown, tada, ein Publikumsliebling.

The Rosa is probably a crowd favorite as a clown, ta-da!
