Und zuerst gehen wir nun ins Kolumba, dem Kunstmuseum in Köln.

And first, we are now going to Kolumba, the art museum in Cologne.

In den allermeisten Museen ist das ja so.

Und das war's.

Typisch für Kolumba ist ja, dass die Sammlung aus ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen besteht.

Auf der einen Seite klassische Sakralkunst, Erzbistum.

On one side, classical sacred art, archdiocese.

Auf der anderen Seite gibt es aber auch verschiedene Schenkungen, vieles auch aus dem Designbereich.

Und dann die zeitgenössische Kunst.

And then contemporary art.

Und ganz oft werden die Ausstellungen tatsächlich ausschließlich aus der Sammlung bestückt.

And very often the exhibitions are actually filled exclusively from the collection.

Und dann ist es immer spannend zu sehen, nach einem Jahr, okay, welche Arbeiten erkennt man vielleicht wieder?

And then it's always exciting to see, after a year, okay, which works do you recognize again?

Wo sind alte Bekannte? Was ist neu dazugekommen?

Where are old acquaintances? What is new that has been added?

Ja, so war ich dann eben drüben und war sehr glücklich, nach 16 Jahren das erste Mal wieder die Kugelbahn von Manus Zangaris zu sehen.

Yes, I was over there and was very happy to see the marble run by Manus Zangaris for the first time in 16 years.

Eine wirklich wunderbare Arbeit, eine große raumgreifende Installation.

A truly wonderful work, a large spatial installation.

Eine räumliche, installative Komposition für eine Person im Zentrum, Untertitel.

Und es ist tatsächlich so, man setzt sich auf einen Stuhl und rummalen rum ist ein riesiges Gebilde aus Schienen,

And it is indeed the case that you sit down on a chair and doodling around is a huge structure made of tracks,

aus Schläuchen, aus irgendwelchen kleinen klappernden Dingen.

from hoses, from some small rattling things.

Man hat zwei Strippen.

You have two wires.

Man drückt auf der linken Strippe einen Knopf und oben links bewegt sich eine Kugel.

You press a button on the left strip and a ball moves at the top left.

Und diese Kugel fängt an zu laufen über so Metallschienen und rutscht einen langen Strumpf runter und wird weiter katapultiert.

And this ball starts rolling over metal tracks and slides down a long sock and gets catapulted further.

Dann setzt sich eine kleine Metallkugel in Bewegung, rollt weiter, kommt dann in so eine Art Flipperkonstruktion.

Then a small metal ball starts to move, rolls on, and then enters a kind of pinball structure.

Und man weiß gar nicht, wo man zu innen erst hin hören soll und zuerst hinschauen kann.

And one doesn't even know where to listen inwardly first and where to look first.

Das ist wirklich was, das umfängt einen mit ganzen Sinnen.

That is truly something that envelops you with all your senses.

Und das weckt natürlich auch so das Kind in einem, den Spieltrieb.

And that naturally awakens the child in you, the playful instinct.

Eine ganz wunderbare Art und Weise, diese Mischung zwischen Kunst und Sound, zwischen Aktivierung des Publikums und eben auch Zeigen,

A truly wonderful way of this mixture between art and sound, between engaging the audience and also showing.

dass Kunst durchaus aus Spiel sein kann.

that art can certainly be a form of play.

Wie ist das denn, wenn das, also eine Person sitzt da drin und die anderen von außen kriegen die auch was mit davon?

How is it when someone is sitting inside and the others outside also get to know something about it?

Die anderen stehen da und beneiden einen, dass man da in der Mitte sitzt, so ungefähr.

The others stand there and envy you for sitting in the middle, roughly speaking.

Jede neue Jahresausstellung hat ja auch ein Motto.

Dieses Mal ist es Artist at Work.

This time it's Artist at Work.

Wahrscheinlich sind da jetzt nicht irgendwelche Künstlerinnen und Künstler die ganze Zeit dabei, irgendwas Neues zuzubereiten.

Probably there aren't any artists constantly working on creating something new right now.

Zu erschaffen.

To create.

Wie zeigt sich das denn dann in den gezeigten Objekten?

How does that manifest in the shown objects?

Also das ist tatsächlich ein Titel, der einer konkreten Arbeit entlehnt ist.

So that is actually a title taken from a specific work.

Und der hat in den 70er Jahren in Zagreb, im sozialistischen Zagreb, eine Aktion gemacht.

And he held an event in the 1970s in Zagreb, in socialist Zagreb.

Der hat sich als Künstler komplett in Montur angezogen, tagsüber ins Bett gelegt und nichts getan.

He dressed up completely as an artist, lay down in bed during the day, and did nothing.

Also eigentlich eine totale Provokation.

It's actually a total provocation.

Und natürlich so ein Spiel mit diesem Klischee.

And of course such a game with this cliché.

Ja, die Künstler ist es.

Yes, it is the artist.

Sowieso alles Nichtsnutze und die liegen uns auf der Tasche und die kriegen nichts auf die Reihe.

Anyway, all good-for-nothings, and they're a burden on us, and they can't get anything done.

Und da sehen wir jetzt diese Fotoserie, einfach diesen Mann im Bett liegen.

And now we see this photo series, simply this man lying in bed.

Und er spielt damit natürlich auch drauf an, auf das Lob der Faulheit, des Müßiggangs, des Nichtstun.

And he is of course also alluding to the praise of laziness, idleness, and doing nothing.

Das eben nicht in Funktion seins, sondern um Ideen freizusetzen, um kreativ zu sein, braucht man vielleicht auch Freiräume.

It is not about being in function, but rather about releasing ideas and being creative, which may also require space to do so.

Und er hat sich wohl damals auch ganz explizit auf Jackson Pollock bezogen.

And he explicitly referred to Jackson Pollock back then as well.

Das ist ja einer dieser großen Künstler, der Heroin.

That's one of those great artists, the heroin.

Der Heroin des abstrakten Expressionismus.

The heroin of abstract expressionism.

Der hat sich so im Atelier gezeigt, eher im Blaumann mit Pinsel und wie er dann seine riesengroßen Drappings gemacht hat.

He showed himself in the studio like that, rather in a work suit with a brush, and how he then created his gigantic drapings.

Also die Farbe mit dem Pinsel auf die Leinwand katapultiert und das Ganze wurde dann auch dann eben in den Kunstmarkt eingespeist.

So the color was catapulted onto the canvas with the brush, and the whole thing was then fed into the art market.

Und das ist sozusagen eine Gegenposition.

And that is, so to speak, a counter position.

Und da kommt dieser Titel her, Artists at Work.

And that's where this title comes from, Artists at Work.

Es gibt aber auch eine sehr schöne Fotoarbeit, die empfängt einen, wenn man die Treppe hoch geht im Museum.

However, there is also a very beautiful photographic work that welcomes you as you go up the stairs in the museum.

Und da sind Fotografien von Händen, von den Innenseiten von Händen.

And there are photographs of hands, of the palms of hands.

Und zwar von Künstlerhänden.

Namely from artist hands.

Also die Hand von Christo, die Hand von Klaas Oldenburg, die Hand von Andy Warhol.

So the hand of Christo, the hand of Claes Oldenburg, the hand of Andy Warhol.

Und das ist wirklich eine Arbeit, die dieser Idee nachgeht, sieht die Künstlerhand vielleicht anders aus, als die Hand von dir und mir, von ganz normalen Menschen.

And this is truly a work that pursues this idea; the artist's hand may look different than the hand of you and me, of completely ordinary people.

Und am Anfang gibt es dann nochmal so eine Zeichnung, wo dann die verschiedenen Linien eingezeichnet sind.

And at the beginning, there is another drawing where the different lines are marked.

Also es gibt ja tatsächlich diese Handlesekunst, wo da die Lebenslinie und die Kopflinie und die Herzlinie und ich weiß nicht, was alles noch da ist.

So there is actually this art of palmistry, where there is the life line and the head line and the heart line and I don't know what else is there.

Und so kann man dann ganz spielerisch da hochgehen.

And so one can playfully go up there.

Und wird so auch ein bisschen eingestimmt in dieses Thema des Künstlerdaseins.

And so it is also somewhat attuned to this theme of being an artist.

Ja, also geht es eher um die Künstler an sich, als um deren Kunst und wie die arbeiten und wie die vielleicht auch nicht arbeiten und faul rumliegen?

Yes, so it's more about the artists themselves rather than their art and how they work and how they might not work and just lounge around?

Es geht um beides. Es geht ums Künstlersein. Es geht aber auch darum, wie Kunst entsteht, welche Strategien da verfolgt werden.

It's about both. It's about being an artist. But it's also about how art is created, what strategies are pursued.

In Kolumba gibt es einen Raum, das Armarium. Der ist immer ganz dunkel und da sind oft so die preziosen, heilige Sachen zu sehen.

In Kolumba, there is a room called the Armarium. It is always very dark, and often precious, holy items can be seen there.

Und in dem Fall, Michael Kalmbach hat einen Raum gefüllt.

And in that case, Michael Kalmbach has filled a room.

Mit über 130 kleinen Figuren aus Gips.

With over 130 small figures made of plaster.

Und die Geschichte dazu ist, er hat auf dem Flohmarkt mal eine kleine Figur entdeckt, gekauft, so eine Steckfigur und war fasziniert davon und hat die abgeformt.

And the story behind it is that he discovered a small figure at a flea market, bought it, a sort of plug-in figure, and was fascinated by it and made a mold of it.

Und hat aus diesen verschiedenen Körperteilen immer wieder neue Figuren zusammengesetzt.

And has repeatedly combined these different body parts to create new figures.

Und es gibt eben eine kleine Figur, den kleinen Pinsel heißt der.

And there is indeed a small figure, it's called the little brush.

So ein kleiner Typ mit einer Hose und einer wahnsinnig langen Nase.

A little guy with pants and an incredibly long nose.

Und von dem werden ganz viele Formen abgenommen. Konkav, konvex.

And many shapes are taken from it. Concave, convex.

Figurative Formen, amorphe Formen. Und das wird sozusagen durchdekliniert.

Figurative forms, amorphous forms. And that is, so to speak, declined accordingly.

Und dann gibt es noch einen kleinen Animationsfilm, wo eben dieser kleine Pinsel rumläuft und in ein Universum kommt.

And then there is a little animated film where this little brush runs around and enters a universe.

Und aus Knetmasse werden wieder neue Figuren geformt.

And new figures are formed again from modeling clay.

Also da schauen wir sozusagen ein bisschen ins Denken und Machen auch des künstlerischen Prozesses hinein.

So we are somewhat looking into the thinking and doing of the artistic process.

Diese Jahresausstellung, die werden immer, haben Sie gerade schon gesagt, aus der Sammlung von dem Museum genommen.

This annual exhibition, as you just said, will always be taken from the museum's collection.

Das ist vom Erzbistum, dieses Museum. Wie viel Sakralkunst ist dadurch dabei?

This museum is from the archbishopric. How much sacred art is included in it?

Da ist viel Sakralkunst dabei. Also es gibt oben im zentralen Raum, gibt es sehr, sehr viele Madonnenskulpturen, wunderschöne Holzskulpturen.

There is a lot of sacred art included. In the central room, there are many, many Madonna sculptures, beautiful wooden sculptures.

Was das jetzt ehrlich gesagt genau mit dem Thema zu tun hat, kann ich jetzt auch nicht sagen.

To be honest, I can't say exactly what that has to do with the topic now.

Aber eine andere Arbeit, die zeigt eigentlich ganz gut, wie auch in der mittelalterlichen Kunst zum Beispiel dieses Thema des Künstlerseins thematisiert wurde.

But another work that actually shows quite well how this theme of being an artist was also addressed in medieval art, for example.

Es gibt da vier Figuren aus dem Jahre 1469. Das sind Figuren des Epitaph.

There are four figures from the year 1469. These are figures of the epitaph.

Epitaph konnte eine Gedenktafel, aber auch.

An epitaph could be a memorial plaque, but also.

Eine aufwendig geschnitzte Gedenktafel, also jetzt nicht nur reinschriftlich, des Kölner Dombaumeisters damals.

An elaborately carved commemorative plaque, not just inscribed, of the Cologne Cathedral master builder at that time.

Nikolaus von Bühren hieß der. Und diese vier Figuren zeigen also vier edle Männer in toller Kleidung.

His name was Nikolaus von Bühren. And these four figures show four noble men in fabulous clothing.

Zum Teil sind die leider beschäftigt und man sieht, sie hätten was in den Händen gehalten.

Unfortunately, some of them are busy, and you can see they would have held something in their hands.

Das ist aber abgeschlagen. Aber eigentlich sind das eben vier Handwerker mit ihren Werkzeugen.

That is indeed cut off. But actually, these are just four craftsmen with their tools.

Also zum Beispiel der Polier mit seinem Winkeleisen oder ein Bildhauer mit Zirkeln.

So for example the foreman with his angle iron or a sculptor with compasses.

Und die standen, dieser Epitaph stand damals.

And they stood, this epitaph stood back then.

Im Chorbereich des Kölner Doms. Das heißt, das war auch ein Zeichen des Selbstbewusstseins der Handwerker der Dombauhütte.

In the choir area of Cologne Cathedral. This means that it was also a sign of the self-confidence of the craftsmen of the cathedral construction workshop.

Das waren nicht irgendwelche anonymen Figuren, die da irgendwie irgendwelchen niederen Tätigkeiten nachgegangen sind,

These were not just anonymous figures engaging in some sort of lowly activities.

sondern das war was. Das war Selbstbewusstsein, das war Stolz und das war eine große künstlerische Qualität.

but that was something. That was self-confidence, that was pride, and that was a great artistic quality.

Und eben dieses Selbstbewusstsein, was sich damals auch formuliert hat.

And it is precisely this self-confidence that was articulated back then.

Mindestens genauso viel Aufmerksamkeit wie die jährlich wechselnde Ausstellung hat ja auch die Architektur an sich.

At least as much attention as the annually changing exhibition is also given to the architecture itself.

Das überstrahlt schon auch immer diese Ausstellung und ist total zentral und total wichtig.

That always overshadows this exhibition and is totally central and totally important.

Viele gehen einfach deswegen hin.

Many simply go there for that reason.

Wie ist denn dieses Zusammenspiel aus dieser ganz besonderen Architektur und dieser Ausstellung?

How does this interplay of this very special architecture and this exhibition work?

Also die große Qualität der Architektur von Peter Zumthor ist, dass sie selber Kunstwerk ist.

The great quality of Peter Zumthor's architecture is that it itself is a work of art.

Wunderbar, ganz tolle Materialien, ganz tolle Räume, Diagonalen, Perspektiven.

Wonderful, really great materials, really great rooms, diagonals, perspectives.

Dass sie aber es gleichzeitig schafft, Bühne für die Kunst zu sein.

That it manages to be a stage for art at the same time.

Und das erlebt man in Kolumba einfach.

And you simply experience that in Kolumba.

Jedes Mal neu, weil es natürlich auch immer unterschiedlich gestaltet ist.

Every time it's new, because of course it's always designed differently.

Diesmal ist es eine sehr luftige Präsentation.

This time it is a very airy presentation.

Es sind fast ein Drittel weniger Arbeiten als sonst.

There are almost a third fewer jobs than usual.

Das heißt, die strahlen nochmal, die entfalten sich nochmal, die atmen nochmal ganz anders in dieser Architektur.

This means that they shine again, they unfold again, they breathe in a completely different way in this architecture.

Und das ist immer ein wunderbares Zusammenspiel.

And that is always a wonderful interplay.

Es gibt ja auch unterschiedlich niedrige und hohe Räume.

There are also rooms of varying heights, both low and high.

Und wenn dann in einem ganz hohen Raum ganz kleine Arbeiten aus Äthiopien stehen,

And then, when very small works from Ethiopia are displayed in a very high space,

Nackenbänke, Kopfbänke, man weiß gar nicht, wer hat die gestaltet.

Neck benches, head benches, one doesn't even know who designed them.

Aber auch die haben eine skulpturale Form.

But they also have a sculptural form.

Und die atmen plötzlich in einem Raum, der zehn Meter hoch ist.

And they suddenly breathe in a room that is ten meters high.

Das ist eine ganz wunderbare Erfahrung.

That is a truly wonderful experience.

Klingt also nach einer klaren Empfehlung.

Sounds like a clear recommendation.

Yes, sollte man hingehen.

Yes, one should go there.

Das sind sowas wie die etablierten Bühnen für die freie Szene.

Das Tanzhaus NRW gehört dazu.

Und das FFT Düsseldorf auch.

Und obwohl das kein festes Ensemble hat wie die großen Häuser, gehört es fest zur Kulturlandschaft.

und dann versuche ich, dann schaue ich, was kann ich zeichnen,

and then I try, then I see what I can draw,

welche Bilder finde ich?

Which pictures will I find?

Das sind manchmal ja fast abstrakte Zeichnungen,

Those are sometimes almost abstract drawings,

aber es gibt ja so verschiedene Versatzstücke,

but there are various fragments,

auch das wieder wie in einem Puzzle in der Graphic Novel,

also this again like in a puzzle in the graphic novel,

die ich mache.

Ich arbeite mit Zeichnungen, aber auch mit Texten,

mit Dialogen in den Sprechblasen.

Es gibt sogar Soundwords im Comic.

Und das gibt so eine Möglichkeit, hier eine Lesbarkeit zu schaffen,
