Liebe Freunde unseres Radios, liebe Zuhörer, wir sind im letzten Abschnitt des letzten Kapitels des Papstbuches Jesus von Nazareth angelangt

Dear friends of our radio, dear listeners, we have reached the final section of the last chapter of the Pope's book Jesus of Nazareth.

und ich werde es heute abschließen. Eineinhalb Jahre hat es jetzt gedauert, dieses Buch zu besprechen.

And I will finish it today. It has now taken a year and a half to discuss this book.

Fast ein halbes Jahr müssen wir abziehen wegen meiner Auszeit, also ein gutes Jahr.

We have to deduct almost half a year because of my break, so it's a good year.

Es geht um die Ich-Bin-Aussagen, auch bei den Synoptikern, bei Markus kommt es einmal vor,

It is about the I-am statements, also in the Synoptics, it occurs once in Mark.

nämlich als die Jünger auf dem See unterwegs sind nach Bethsaida, dann ein Sturm aufkommt.

namely when the disciples are on their way to Bethsaida on the lake, and then a storm arises.

Sie haben einen furchtbaren Schrecken, als sie dann Jesus über das Wasser ihnen entgegenkommen sehen.

They are terrified when they see Jesus coming toward them over the water.

Sie waren ganz durcheinander durch den Wind, ganz wirklich, könnte man sagen, in Bezug auf die Situation des Seesturms.

They were completely disoriented by the wind, quite literally, one could say, in relation to the situation of the sea storm.

Jesus spricht ganz gütig zu ihnen, habt Mut, ich bin's, fürchtet euch nicht.

Jesus speaks quite kindly to them, take courage, it is I, do not be afraid.

Das Ich-Bin-Es erscheint zunächst, da meint sie ganz einfache Identifikation.

The I-Am-It initially appears, as she means a very simple identification.

Eine Identifikationsform, also ein Ausweis dessen, wer hier spricht, damit, dass es der Herr ist.

A form of identification, that is, a certificate of who is speaking here, indicating that it is the gentleman.

Aber ganz so einfach geht es doch nicht.

But it's not that simple after all.

Das Besondere ist nämlich, dass die Jünger jetzt erst recht erschrecken.

The special thing is that the disciples are now even more frightened.

Sie sind ganz und gar außer sich, drückt sich Markus drastisch aus. Warum eigentlich?

They are completely beside themselves, Markus expresses dramatically. Why actually?

Die Furcht der Jünger ist jedenfalls mit der ersten Angst, ein Gespenst zu sehen, nicht behoben, sondern steigert sich noch.

The disciples' fear, in any case, is not alleviated by the initial fear of seeing a ghost, but rather increases.

Besonders als ein plötzlich Windstil hier eintritt.

Especially when a sudden calm sets in here.

Es ist ein ganz offenkundig Theophanie.

It is a quite obvious theophany.

Phänisches Moment, also ein Moment der Gottesoffenbarung, die den Menschen überfällt,

Phenomenal moment, that is a moment of divine revelation, which overwhelms humanity,

wenn er sich der Gegenwart Gottes unmittelbar ausgesetzt sieht.

when he finds himself directly confronted with the presence of God.

Das war ja auch so, als Simon Petrus von Christus vom Boot aus in die Nachfolge gerufen worden ist.

That was also the case when Simon Peter was called to follow Christ from the boat.

Und er sagt dann, geh weg von mir, ich bin ein sündiger Mensch.

And he says, go away from me, I am a sinful man.

Es ist der Gottesschrecken, der über die Jünger hereinbricht.

It is the terror of God that breaks upon the disciples.

Denn das Gehen über Wasser ist Gottes Seil, das kann kein Mensch.

For walking on water is God's rope, which no man can do.

Der den Himmel ausspannt, er allein, der über den Wogen des Meeres einherwandelt,

He who stretches out the sky, he alone, who walks over the waves of the sea,

so heißt es im Buch Job über Gott.

So it is said in the Book of Job about God.

Der Jesus, der über die Wasser geht, ist nicht einfach der vertraute Jesus.

The Jesus who walks on water is not simply the familiar Jesus.

In ihm erkennen sie plötzlich die Gegenwart Gottes selber.

In him, they suddenly recognize the presence of God Himself.

Und dem entspricht dann auch die Proskynesis vom Griechischen, also das Niederfallen der Jünger,

And this corresponds to the proskynesis from Greek, thus the prostration of the disciples,

die Anbetung, das mit dem Wort bei Matthäus dann schließt, wahrhaft, du bist Gottes Sohn.

the worship that concludes with the words in Matthew: truly, you are the Son of God.

Nun ganz zum Schluss, ich bin Aussagen, auf die der Papst nur ist,

Now, finally, I am statements, to which the Pope is only.

der kursorisch eingeht, wo es mit einem Bildwort inhaltlich konkretisiert wird.

the cursorily addresses, where it is concretized in content with an image word.

Bei Johannes sind es sieben Bildworte und er meint, dass es kein Zufall ist, dass es gerade sieben sind.

With Johannes, there are seven images and he believes that it is no coincidence that there are exactly seven.

Brot des Lebens, ich bin das Licht der Welt, die Tür, der gute Hütte, die Auferstehung und das Leben.

Bread of life, I am the light of the world, the door, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life.

Das sind zwei und jetzt die nächsten drei auch als eines zusammengefasst.

These are two, and now the next three summarized as one.

Der Weg, die Wahrheit und das Leben, der wahre Weinstock.

The way, the truth, and the life, the true vine.

Man könnte auch noch in Bezug auf Johannes sieben hinzufügen,

One could also add in relation to John seven,

ich bin das lebendige Wasser, auch wenn dieser Ausdruck, ich bin, in diesem Zusammenhang nicht verwendet wird.

I am the living water, even if this expression, I am, is not used in this context.

All diese Bildworte sind Variationen des einen Themas,

All these images are variations of one theme,

dass Jesus gekommen ist, damit die Menschen das Leben haben und es in Fülle haben.

that Jesus came so that people may have life and have it in abundance.

Es gibt nur die eine Gabe des Lebens und er kann sie geben,

There is only the one gift of life, and he can give it.

weil in ihm das Gottesleben in ursprünglicher und unerschöpflicher Fülle anwesend ist.

because in it the divine life is present in original and inexhaustible fullness.

Der Mensch braucht und er sehnt letztlich nur eines, Leben,

Man ultimately needs and longs for only one thing: life.

das volle Leben, das Glück.

the full life, the happiness.

An einer Stelle nennt Jesus bei Johannes dieses Einfach,

At one point, Jesus refers to this simplicity in John.

auf das wir warten, die vollkommene Freude.

for which we wait, the perfect joy.

Dies eine, um das es in den vielen Wünschen und Hoffnungen des Menschen geht,

This one thing, which is at the center of the many wishes and hopes of humanity,

ist auch ausgedrückt der zweiten Vaterunserbitte, dein Reich komme.

is also expressed in the second petition of the Lord's Prayer, your kingdom come.

Das Reich Gottes ist Leben in Fülle.

The Kingdom of God is life in abundance.

Gerade weil es nicht nur privates Glück, individuelle Freude ist,

Especially because it is not just private happiness, individual joy,

sondern die zu ihrer rechten Gestalt gekommene Welt, die Einheit von Gott und Welt.

but the world that has come to its rightful form, the unity of God and the world.

Der Mensch braucht letztlich nur eines, das Glück.

Ultimately, a person only needs one thing: happiness.

Nur eines, in dem alles enthalten ist.

Only one, in which everything is contained.

Aber er muss durch seine vordergründigen Wünsche und Sehnsucht durch und durch

But he must be thoroughly permeated by his superficial desires and longings.

erst erkennen lernen, was er wirklich braucht und was er wirklich will.

first learn to recognize what he really needs and what he really wants.

Er braucht Gott.

He needs God.

Und so können wir nun sehen, dass hinter all diesen Bildreden letztlich dies steht.

And so we can now see that behind all these metaphors ultimately lies this.

Jesus gibt uns das Leben, weil er uns Gott gibt.

Jesus gives us life because he gives us God.

Er kann ihn geben, weil er selbst eins ist mit Gott, weil er der Sohn ist.

He can give it because he is one with God himself, because he is the Son.

Er selbst ist die Gabe, er ist das Leben.

He himself is the gift, he is the life.

Eben darum ist sein ganzes Wesen Mitteilung.

That is precisely why his entire being is communication.

Ganz positiv.

Completely positive.

Pro Existenz, das heißt Dasein für andere.

Pro existence, that is, existence for others.

Blicken wir zurück.

Let's look back.

Dann resümiert der Papst noch dieses Kapitel.

Then the Pope summarizes this chapter.

Er ist auf drei zentrale Worte eingegangen.

He addressed three central words.

Prädikationen für Christus, Menschensohn, Sohn und ich bin es.

Predications for Christ, Son of Man, Son, and I am it.

Alle diese drei Worte zeigen die tiefe Verwurzelung in dem Wort Gottes,

All three of these words show the deep rooting in the Word of God,

der Bibel Israels, dem Alten Testament.

the Bible of Israel, the Old Testament.

Aber erst in Christus erhalten all diese Worte ihren vollen Sinn.

But only in Christ do all these words find their full meaning.

Auf ihn haben sie sozusagen gewartet.

They have basically been waiting for him.

Das gilt natürlich.

That applies, of course.

Das ist auch für das Weihnachts-Evangelium.

This is also for the Christmas Gospel.

In all diesen drei Worten erscheint die Originalität Jesu,

In all three of these words, the originality of Jesus appears,

sein Neues, das nur ihm eigene, für das es keine weiteren Ableitungen gibt.

his new one, that is only his own, for which there are no further derivations.

Alle drei sind daher nur in seinem Mund möglich.

All three are therefore only possible in his mouth.

Zentral das Gebetswort Sohn, dem die Anrede Abervater korrespondiert.

Central to the prayer word "Son," which corresponds to the address "Father."

Keines der drei Worte konnte daher, so wie es dasteht,

None of the three words could, therefore, as it stands,

einfach ein Bekenntniswort der Gemeinde, der sich bildenden Kirche werden.

simply become a confession word of the community, the forming church.

Das wurde in der Theologie oft behauptet.

This has often been claimed in theology.

Den Inhalt aller drei Worte mit dem Zentrum der Sohn

The content of all three words with the center of the Son.

hat die werdende Kirche in das Wort Sohn Gottes hineingelegt,

has the emerging Church placed into the word Son of God,

das sie damit definitiv von der mythologischen und politischen Vorgeschichte löste.

that it definitely freed itself from the mythological and political prehistory.

Der Pharao, die mächtigen Könige damals, verstanden sich auch als Söhne Gottes.

The pharaoh, the mighty kings of that time, also saw themselves as sons of God.

Auf dem Boden der Erwählungstheologie Israels erhält es eine ganz neue Bedeutung,

On the basis of the theology of election in Israel, it takes on a completely new meaning,

die von Jesu Reden als der Sohn und als der Ich Bin vorgezeichnet ist.

which is outlined by Jesus' words as the Son and as the I Am.

Diese neue Bedeutung muss den vielfältigen und schweren Prozessen,

This new meaning must reflect the diverse and challenging processes,

der Unterscheidung und des Ringensvollens, geklärt werden.

the distinction and the struggle must be clarified.

Dazu diente das erste nizänische Konzil, und zwar das Wort Wesensgleich, Homoousios,

This served the first Nicene Council, namely the term of consubstantial, Homoousios.

Wesensgleich mit dem Vater.

Of the same essence as the Father.

Dieses Wort hat den Glauben nicht hellenisiert, also ins Griechische hinübergetragen,

This word has not Hellenized faith, that is, it has not been transferred into Greek.

ihn nicht mit einer fremden Philosophie betrachtet,

not viewed with a foreign philosophy,

sondern gerade das unvergleichlich Neue und Andere festgehalten,

but rather captured the incomparable new and different,

das in Jesu Reden mit dem Vater erschienen.

that appeared in Jesus' words with the Father.

Jetzt sollten wir da ein bisschen innehalten.

Now we should take a moment to pause there.

Das Wort Homoousios kommt im ganzen Neuen Testament nicht vor.

The word homoousios does not appear anywhere in the New Testament.

Und um dieses Wort wurde er dann gestritten und gerungen, hatte Spaltungen gegeben.

And this word was then disputed and struggled over, leading to divisions.

Weil eben dieses griechische Denken wesentlich das ausdrückte, worum es bei Christus ging,

Because this Greek thinking essentially expressed what it was all about in Christ,

dass er Wesens eins mit dem Vater ist.

that he is one in essence with the Father.

Und das Buch von Papst Benedikt hat auf weite Strecken eigentlich gar keinen anderen Zielpunkt,

And the book by Pope Benedict actually has no other goal for the most part,

als jenen aufzuzeigen, dass zwischen dem irdischen und erhöhten Christus kein garstiger Graben da ist,

to show that there is not a nasty chasm between the earthly and exalted Christ,

wie das oft in der Theologie behauptet wird.

as is often claimed in theology.

Er hat schon als der irdische diesen Anspruch erhoben.

He already made this claim as the earthly one.

Und das finden Sie eigentlich in jedem Satz des Seinertritt mit einem unglaublichen Anspruch auf.

And you can actually find that in every sentence of his statement with an incredible claim.

Mit dem Anspruch, dass Gott sein Vater ist, dass er auf einer Stufe mit ihm steht, dass er selber Gott ist.

With the claim that God is his father, that he stands on the same level as him, that he is God himself.

Und das ist in diesem Wort Homoousios im ersten Konzil von Nicaea festgehalten worden.

And this is stated in the word Homoousios in the first Council of Nicaea.

Im Bekenntnis von Nicaea sagt die Kirche immer neu mit Petrus zu Jesus,

In the Nicene Creed, the Church continually says to Jesus with Peter,

Du bist Christus, der Sohn des lebendigen Gottes.

You are Christ, the Son of the living God.

Sie merken also, dass wir auch vor der kritischen Exegese nicht zurückweichend brauchen,

You can see that we do not need to shy away from critical exegesis either,

dass der Papst sehr wohl die Exegese schätzt, aufgreift, also die Bibelwissenschaft,

that the Pope certainly values and engages with exegesis, that is, biblical studies,

aber dass er auch sehr kritisch hinschaut.

but that he also looks very critically.

Unser Lehrer hat uns immer gesagt, sie müssen eigentlich nur auf eines schauen,

Our teacher always told us that you really only need to look at one thing,

was sind die Vorurteile, was sind die Prämissen, mit denen jemand einen Text herangeht,

What are the prejudices, what are the premises with which someone approaches a text?

was will er von vornherein ausgeschlossen wissen, was ist ihm wichtig.

What does he want to be excluded from the outset, what is important to him?

Und dann können sie diese Exegese einordnen.

And then they can categorize this exegesis.

Das ist zwar ein bisschen bedauerlich, aber dass es so ist, dass man da nicht alles so unbesehen einfach stehen lassen kann,

This is somewhat regrettable, but the fact is that you can't just leave everything there unexamined.

aber es ist eben so.

but it is just so.

Und das ist die Geschichte der Exegese der letzten.

And this is the story of the exegesis of the last.

Es sind ja 100 Jahre gewesen oder noch weiter zurück, dass es da ganz unterschiedliche Auslegungen gegeben hat.

It has been 100 years or even further back that there have been very different interpretations.

Und meines Erachtens hat der Papst einen bahnbrechenden Beitrag dazu geleistet, uns hier die Richtung zu weisen.

And in my opinion, the Pope has made a groundbreaking contribution to guiding us in this direction.

Er ist eben ein Theologe und unser verstorbener Papst Johannes Paul II. war von seiner Schulbildung her wesentlich ein Philosoph.

He is simply a theologian, and our deceased Pope John Paul II was fundamentally a philosopher by his education.

Das hat man auch in all seinen Reden, seinen Ansprachen gemerkt.

You could also see that in all his speeches and addresses.

Und ich glaube, dass das, wenn man die beiden Pontifikate miteinander sieht,

And I believe that, when one looks at the two pontificates together,

eine ideale Ergänzung ist, wie es gar nicht besser hätte sein können.

An ideal complement is, as it couldn't have been better.

Ich freue mich schon riesig auf das zweite Buch des Papstes,

I am really looking forward to the pope's second book.

was um die Kindheit des Herrn und die Leidensgeschichte geht.

It is about the childhood of the Lord and the story of his suffering.

Im neuen Jahr möchte ich dann noch die wertvolle Enzyklika Spes Salvi,
