die Rückfallquote der Jugendlichen, die über das Seehaus begleitet werden, bei gerade mal 25 Prozent.

The relapse rate of the young people who are supported through the Seehaus is only 25 percent.

Grund genug?

Good enough reason?

Herr Merkle, zu Beginn vielleicht erstmal die Frage, warum wird ein Jugendlicher überhaupt kriminell?

Mr. Merkle, to start with, perhaps the question is why does a young person become criminal in the first place?

Kann man das eigentlich beantworten?

Can that actually be answered?

Gut, da gibt es ja viele Gründe, wo dann mehrere auch aufeinandertreffen.

Well, there are many reasons where several meet as well.

Zum einen ist eigentlich das Problem, dass viele aus zerrütteten Familienverhältnissen kommen

On the one hand, the problem is that many come from broken family backgrounds.

und auch selber zum einen in der Familie keine Werte vorgelebt bekommen,

teilweise eine gewaltsame Erziehung erleben und keine Vorbilder haben,

Es gibt auch falsche Vorbilder, schlechte Freunde und so kommt vieles von dem zusammen.

Einfluss hat natürlich auch der Medienkonsum und insgesamt die Lebenseinstellungen.

Media consumption and overall life attitudes also have an influence, of course.

Habe ich ein Ziel in meinem Leben?

Do I have a goal in my life?

Habe ich eine Struktur für mein Leben?

Do I have a structure for my life?

Habe ich positive Freunde, die mich vorwärts bringen?

Do I have positive friends that help me move forward?

Habe ich eine sinnvolle Freizeitbeschäftigung?

Do I have a meaningful leisure activity?

Und genau, das sind so einige der Gründe.

And exactly, these are some of the reasons.

Der Werteverfall insgesamt in der Gesellschaft hängt natürlich auch damit zusammen

The overall decline in values in society is of course also related to this.

und auch eine Anonymisierung.

Oder Individualisierung, die ja mehr und mehr eintritt.

Also ganz unterschiedliche Gründe.

Dann ist es auch schwer, eigentlich eine ganz klare Antwort darauf zu geben,

Gut, viele haben eben, bevor sie ins Gefängnis kommen, keinen Hals.

Und den finden sie im Strafvollzug natürlich normalerweise auch nicht.

Weil Strafvollzug ist nie ein idealer Ort, um Jugendliche oder auch Erwachsene vorzubereiten

Because imprisonment is never an ideal place to prepare young people or even adults.

auf dem Leben in Verantwortung, auf Leben ohne Straftaten.

Wenn wir jetzt diese ganz unterschiedlichen Perspektiven haben,

If we now have these very different perspectives,

diese ganz unterschiedlichen Fälle, können wir sagen,

these completely different cases, we can say,

dass wir tatsächlich einen neuen Ansatz brauchen?

that we actually need a new approach?

Kann es ein Ansatz sein?

Oder wie wird man in dieser ganzen Zeit,

in diesem ganzen Wirrwarr von verschiedenen Gründen dafür her?

In all this confusion of different reasons for it?

Gut, ich denke, es gibt viele Ansatzpunkte,

auch schon viele sehr gute Ansatzpunkte, die umgesetzt werden.

Many very good starting points are already being implemented.

Aber aus unserer Sicht muss man mehreren Punkten anfassen.

But from our perspective, several points need to be addressed.

Zum einen ist natürlich im Vorfeld ganz wichtig,

On the one hand, it is very important in advance,

dass wir den Kindern und Jugendlichen wieder Werte vermitteln,

that we instill values in children and young people again,

dass sie Halt finden im Leben,

that they find support in life,

dass wir gucken, wie können wir ihnen auch gute Bezugspersonen geben,

that we look at how we can also provide them with good reference persons,

wenn das ist.

Wenn das Elternhaus das nicht liefert,

If the parental home does not provide that,

wo können wir auch als Kirchengemeinden da Bezugspersonen sein oder bieten?

Das zum einen, dass im Vorfeld schon ganz viel passiert,

dass Leute nicht abrutschen in die Kriminalität.

Zum anderen denke ich, wenn Kriminalität vorfällt,

müssen wir sehr konsequent und sehr schnell reagieren.

Bei uns passiert da lange gar nichts.

With us, nothing happens for a long time.

Und gibt es dann hier mal eine Verwarnung,

dort mal eine Verwarnung, dann eine Bewährungsstrafe.

There a warning, then a suspended sentence.

Das ist für die Jungs dann ein Freispruch und heißt für sie,

That is an acquittal for the boys and means for them,

das ist für die Jungs weiter so.

Und aus unserer Sicht müsste von der ersten Straftat vom ersten Ladendiebstahl,

Und aus unserer Sicht müsste die Opferperspektive,

Und auch im Idealfall ein direkter Täter-Opfer-Ausgleich,

und dass der Täter dann auch wirkliche Verantwortung übernimmt

Und ja, das ist bei uns im Strafgesetz verankert,

Aber wenn eine Haftstrafe umgesetzt wird,

wie muss dann Haft aussehen?

Und natürlich, je größer und je geschlossener eine Einrichtung ist,

desto mehr Macht hat auch die Subkultur.

Und es gibt in Deutschland, vor allem auch in Jugendgefängnissen,

And there are in Germany, especially in youth prisons,

sehr gute Angebote, Schule, Ausbildung.

Das Problem ist immer die negative Subkultur.

Und wenn da ein Jugendlicher reinkommt,

dann muss er sich anpassen, ob er will oder nicht.

Und da gilt halt die Macht des Stärkeren.

Und von dem her kann es kein guter Ort sein für Jugendliche,

um sich auf ein positives Leben vorzubereiten,

trotz der vielen positiven Anstrengungen dort.

Im Seehaus, wir sind eine sehr kleine Einrichtung,

In the lakeside house, we are a very small facility,

wir haben 15 bis 20 Jugendliche,

we have 15 to 20 young people,

20 Plätze, können wir die Jugendlichen aufnehmen.

We can accommodate 20 young people.

Wir nehmen sie auf in Familien,

We take them in as families,

weil viele der Jugendlichen kein funktionierendes Familienleben kennen.

because many of the young people do not know a functioning family life.

So wohnen immer 5 bis 7 Jungs mit einer Mitarbeiterfamilie zusammen.

Five to seven boys always live together with an employee family.

Das ist eine unheimliche Herausforderung für die Hauseltern,

This is an eerie challenge for the foster parents,

zu ihren eigenen Kindern dazu, ältere Brüder aufzunehmen.

to take in older brothers as their own children.

Aber es ist eine unheimliche Chance, dass die Jungs merken,

But there is a strange chance that the guys notice,

ich bin aufgenommen in eine Familie, aufgenommen in eine Lebensgemeinschaft.

I am taken in by a family, taken in by a community of life.

Ich erfahre hier Liebe und Geborgenheit.

I experience love and security here.

Und gleichzeitig sind wir auch in einer Familie,

And at the same time we are also in a family,

in einem sehr eingebundenen, sehr strikten Tagesablauf.

in a very structured, very strict daily routine.

Von 3 bis 6 angefangen mit Frühsport, bis abends 10 ist volles Programm.

Started with morning exercise from 3 to 6, the schedule is full until 10 in the evening.

Schule, Ausbildung, Arbeit, Sport, gemeinsame Arbeit,

School, education, work, sports, teamwork,

Opfer-Empathie-Training, Begegnungen mit Opfern.

Victim empathy training, encounters with victims.

Ein sehr stressiges Programm für die Jungs.

A very stressful program for the boys.

Das Programm des Seehauses,

The program of the lakeside house,

da spielt aber der christliche Glaube auch eine Rolle.

But the Christian faith also plays a role in this.

Beziehungsweise wäre denn dieses Seehaus überhaupt ohne den Glauben denkbar?

In other words, would this lakeside house even be conceivable without faith?

Könnte man so ein Programm,

Could one have such a program,

ein Programm umsetzen, auch ohne den Glauben?

Implement a program, even without faith?

Es gibt auch sehr gute Programme,

There are also very good programs,

die nicht aus dem christlichen Ansatz kommen.

which do not come from the Christian perspective.

Für uns ist das sehr wichtig.

Als Mitarbeiter wollen wir Glaube vorleben, Glaube vermitteln,

As employees, we want to embody faith and convey faith.

ohne das irgendjemandem aufzudrängen.

without imposing it on anyone.

Aber wir als Mitarbeiter haben für uns erlebt,

But we as employees have experienced for ourselves,

wie wichtig für uns der Glaube ist und wie uns das Halt im Leben gibt.

how important faith is for us and how it gives us stability in life.

Und das möchte man auch als Angebot vermitteln für die Jungs.

And that is also what one would like to offer to the boys.

Und so gibt es bestimmte Punkte im Tageslauflauf, morgens in der Zeit der Stille,

And so there are certain points in the daily routine, in the morning during the time of silence,

wo wir in den ersten drei Wochen dann gemeinsam mit ihnen eine Bibel lesen,

where we will read a Bible together with them in the first three weeks,

damit sie es mal kennenlernen oder einen Impuls für den Tag.

so they can get to know it or have a prompt for the day.

Sonntags können sie auswählen zwischen Gottesdienst oder Ethik.

On Sundays they can choose between church service or ethics.

Und so gibt es viele Impulse.

And so there are many impulses.

Und wenn sie Interesse haben, können sie dann da auch weiter Fragen stellen

And if they are interested, they can also ask further questions there.

und das vertiefen und für sich einen Halt im Leben finden.

Sie sagen, es gibt jetzt auch andere Programme,

die gut funktionieren unter dem Glauben.

Merken Sie einen Mehrwert dadurch, dass der Glaube da eine große Rolle spielt im Seehaus?

Do you notice an added value in that faith plays a major role in the lakeside house?

Der Glaube ist immer ein Mehrwert aus meiner Sicht,

weil er eine ganz andere Dimension reinbringt

because he brings in a completely different dimension

und weil es eine ganz andere Perspektive aufzeigt fürs Leben.

and because it shows a completely different perspective on life.

Und so möchte man diese Perspektive eben auch vermitteln.

And so one would like to convey this perspective as well.

Und eben wer Halt im Glauben findet,

And indeed, whoever finds support in faith,

der muss dann nicht mehr Halt in irgendwelchen anderen Sachen suchen,

he no longer has to seek support in any other things,

die keinen Halt geben wie Drogen oder Alkohol oder Anerkennung durch andere Sachen.

that do not provide support like drugs or alcohol or recognition through other means.

Und so ist das eine unheimlich wichtige Basis.

And so this is an incredibly important foundation.

Wie sind Sie selbst dazu gekommen, das Seehaus ins Leben zu rufen?

How did you come to establish the lakeside house?

Sie kommen aus einer Unternehmerfamilie.

They come from a family of entrepreneurs.

Sie könnten auch etwas ganz anderes tun. Warum dieses Projekt?

They could also do something completely different. Why this project?

Ich habe nach der Schule so ein FSJ gemacht in Amerika

I did a voluntary social year in America after school.

und da jemanden besucht im Gefängnis, der vorher in der Trogentherapie war.

and visiting someone in prison who was previously in trough therapy.

Und das war für mich so ein Schlüsselerlebnis.

And that was such a key experience for me.

Da habe ich gesehen, was Gefängnis bedeutet und habe gedacht, das kann es nicht sein.

There I saw what prison means and thought, this can't be it.

Das kann man denen nicht zumuten, aber auch der Gesellschaft nicht zumuten,

One cannot impose that on them, but also not on society.

weil irgendwann kommen sie raus und sind höchstwahrscheinlich Krimineller.

Because sooner or later they will come out and are most likely criminals.

Und dann habe ich für mich gedacht, okay, ich möchte eine Alternative schaffen zum Gefängnis.

And then I thought to myself, okay, I want to create an alternative to prison.

Und abends beim Bibellesen ist mir dann auch klar geworden,

And in the evening while reading the Bible, it became clear to me,

dass es auch meine Berufung von Gott her ist.

that it is also my calling from God.

Dann habe ich mich darauf vorbereitet, das Studium,

Then I prepared myself for studies,

eine Zeit lang bei Prison Fellowship International gearbeitet

worked for a while at Prison Fellowship International

und 13 Jahre nach der Berufung ist es dann wahr geworden

and 13 years after the appointment, it has finally come true

und konnte ich mit dem Seehaus Leonberg beginnen.

and I could start with the lake house Leonberg.

Was war das, was Sie da erlebt haben, als Sie den Bekannten im Gefängnis besucht haben,

What was it that you experienced when you visited the acquaintance in prison?

das Sie so erschüttert hat?

that has shaken you so much?

Gut.

Good.

Wir haben gesehen, neun Quadratmeter, Dreierstockbett,

We have seen, nine square meters, triple bunk bed,

hatten den ganzen Tag keine Schule, keine Arbeit, kein gar nichts,

had no school, no work, nothing at all all day long,

anders als bei uns.

different from us.

Aber eben auch die Subkultur, in die man sich anpassen muss.

But also the subculture that one must adapt to.

Und das ist auf jeden Fall ein schlechter Einfluss.

And that is definitely a bad influence.

Und von dem her macht es selbst denen, die sich verändern wollen,

And from that perspective, it makes it difficult even for those who want to change.

wahnsinnig schwierig, sich zu verändern.

Incredibly difficult to change.

Und da habe ich gedacht, das kann es nicht sein.

And I thought, this can't be it.

Das sind ja alles junge Menschen, die haben Gaben, die haben Fähigkeiten,

These are all young people, they have talents, they have abilities,

die sie bisher negativ genutzt haben, die können sie aber genauso positiv nutzen.

what they have previously used negatively, they can just as well use positively.

Und von dem her muss man ihnen eine Hilfestellung geben,

And from that perspective, one must provide them with support,

damit sie einen anderen Lebensweg einschlagen können.

so that they can embark on a different path in life.

Und nachher auch für uns als Gesellschaft ist das wahnsinnig wichtig,

And afterwards, it is also incredibly important for us as a society,

dass sie diesen Weg nicht weitergehen,

that they will not continue down this path,

sondern jetzt ein Leben ohne Kommunität führen

but now lead a life without community

und für sich auch einen Beruf finden, sich in die Gesellschaft einbringen.

and also find a profession for themselves, contribute to society.

13 Jahre später nach dieser Erfahrung in den USA konnten Sie dann das Seehaus ins Leben rufen,

13 years later after this experience in the USA, you were able to bring the lakeside house to life,

also ein noch sehr weiter Weg bis dahin, von diesem ersten Erlebnis.

So, it's still a long way to go until then, from that first experience.

Waren die Hürden denn hoch, um dieses Projekt ins Leben zu rufen?

Were the hurdles high to bring this project to life?

Gut, bis dahin gab es das noch nicht in Deutschland.

Well, until then it hadn't existed in Germany.

Aber zum Glück hat der damalige Justizminister eine ähnliche Vision.

But luckily, the then Minister of Justice has a similar vision.

Ich bin mal nach dem Vortrag auf ihn zugegangen und habe ihm gesagt, was ich machen will,

I approached him after the lecture and told him what I wanted to do,

habe das Konzept dargelegt.

I have presented the concept.

Und er hat gemeint, das ist ja höchst interessant, am gleichen Tag, sogar im gleichen Raum,

And he said, that's very interesting, on the same day, even in the same room,

hatte er das Konzept seinen Ministerkollegen vorgestellt

He had presented the concept to his ministerial colleagues.

und wollte eben Strafvollzug in freien Formen umsetzen, durch einen freien Träger.

and wanted to implement incarceration in open forms through a free carrier.

Und so sind wir dann zusammengekommen und ein Jahr später gab es dann die Ausschreibung

And so we came together, and a year later there was the announcement.

und nochmal ein Jahr später konnten wir dann beginnen.

And another year later, we were then able to start.

Ein Teil dieses Konzeptes ist natürlich der Tagesablauf.

A part of this concept is, of course, the daily schedule.

Meine Kollegin Gabi Fröhlich konnte mit einem der Jugendlichen sprechen, Erim.

My colleague Gabi Fröhlich was able to speak with one of the young people, Erim.

Er war in diesem Jahr, in diesem Jahr,

in diesem Seehaus auch inhaftiert, hat da den alternativen Strafvollzug mitgemacht.

Also incarcerated in this lakeside house, he participated in alternative imprisonment.

Inzwischen ist Erim wieder frei.

In the meantime, Erim is free again.

Er hat aber ein paar Eindrücke aus seiner Zeit mitgeteilt.

Bei uns im Knast und Senefunk war er zu Besuch.

He visited us in prison and at Senefunk.

Gabi Fröhlich hat ihn unter anderem gefragt, wie der Tagesablauf ist.

Gabi Fröhlich asked him, among other things, what the daily routine is like.

Es fängt bei uns echt sehr straff an.

It really starts off very tight for us.

Also wir fangen zweimal in der Woche um 5.30 Uhr an, treffen uns alle in der Arena

We start twice a week at 5:30 AM, meeting all in the arena.

und müssen eine halbe Stunde joggen.

and must jog for half an hour.

Dann geht es zurück auf die WG, haben kurze Zeit, um Frühstück zu richten.

Dann müssen wir alle uns im Wohnzimmer treffen.

Then we all have to meet in the living room.

Da haben wir eine stille Zeit, die 15 Minuten lang geht.

Ich würde schon sagen, ein großer Teil ist wirklich Social-Media-Schuld.

I would say that a large part is really the fault of social media.

Also das ist jetzt irgendwie Trend geworden, dass jeder jetzt in den Knast will oder sonst irgendwas

So it has somehow become a trend that everyone wants to go to prison or something like that.

oder irgendwelche, die hören ein bisschen Gangster-Rap an und wollen dann selber so sein.

or anyone who listens to a bit of gangster rap and then wants to be like that themselves.

Und viele Social-Media so, was denken jetzt andere über mich?

And many on social media are like, what do others think of me now?

Bin ich jetzt krass, wenn ich denen jetzt eine Faust gebe?

Am I crazy if I give them a punch now?

Bin ich krass, wenn ich denen jetzt einen Stich gebe oder sonst irgendwas?

Am I being extreme if I give them a jab now or something else?

Und natürlich sind es auch Vorbilder.

And of course, they are also role models.

Und ich würde sagen, jetzt heutzutage, also viele Eltern verlieren dann irgendwann die Erziehung über die Kinder

And I would say that nowadays many parents eventually lose control over the upbringing of their children.

und die sind dann eher dann draußen auf der Straße mit seinen Jungs und sind irgendwie Partys machen und sonst was.

And they are more likely to be outside on the street with their guys, having parties and doing other things.

And they don't even know what they are supposed to do there.

Also ich war auch kein leichtes Kind, würde ich sagen.

Well, I wouldn't say I was an easy child either.

Also meiner Mutter tut mir schon echt leid, was sie alles mit mir durchmachen musste.

I really feel sorry for my mother, for everything she had to go through with me.

Das heißt, bei mir war es auch vieles Social Media.

That means, for me it was a lot of social media too.

Und ja, das ist heutzutage auch leichter.

Früher musstest du, keine Ahnung, zu denen erstmal hinlaufen, an die Tür klopfen und fragen, ey, hast du Lust mit mir zu chillen?

Und heutzutage ist alles viel leichter und der Reiz ist ja auch überall da.

Und die meisten nehmen halt irgendwelche Gangster-Rap als Vorbild.

And most people just take some gangster rap as a role model.

Und es fängt ja auch in jungen Jahren an.

And it starts at a young age.

Es fängt ja nicht an, wenn du erwachsen bist und so.

It doesn't start when you're an adult and so on.

Dass du mit einem Leben stehst.

That you are standing with a life.

Sondern es fängt irgendwann mit zehn, elf, zwölf Jahren an, dass du anfängst, Gangster-Rap zu hören und dich davon beeinflussen lässt.

But it starts at some point around the age of ten, eleven, or twelve, when you begin to listen to gangster rap and let it influence you.

Also Social Media gibt es bei euch am Seehaus gar nicht, oder?

So there is no social media at your lakeside house at all, is there?

Es ist natürlich stufenabhängig.

It is of course dependent on the level.

Also ich zum Beispiel nur auf der höchsten Stufe habe einmal in der Woche mein Handy.

For example, I only have my phone once a week on the highest level.

Habe Heimfahrt, habe Besuch, habe sehr viel, also viel, viel öfter als die anderen ihr Handy.

I have a trip home, I have visitors, I have a lot, therefore much more often than the others have their phones.

Aber auf der niedrigsten Stufe haben sie gar kein Handy und keinen Zugriff auf Social Media.

But at the lowest level, they have no mobile phone and no access to social media.

Ja.

Yes.

Und das ist auch, siehst du auch jetzt, ich kann mir vorstellen, wenn man da ständig dran war, dann ist das erstmal sehr hart.

And that's also, you see now, I can imagine that if you were constantly on it, then it would be very tough at first.

Gut, im Gefängnis natürlich auch erstmal nicht.

Well, not in prison, of course.

Das heißt, da ist ja auch schon mal ein Entzug gewesen.

Also die meisten haben eh schon ein Handy vergessen.

Well, most have already forgotten about a phone anyway.

Wenn die jetzt herkommen und man denen direkt ein Handy in die Hand drückt, dann verfallen die eigentlich relativ,

If they come here now and you give them a phone directly, they actually become relatively disoriented.

also ich würde sagen, die würden dann direkt in die alten Verhaltensmuster verfallen.

So I would say they would then fall directly back into their old behavior patterns.

Wenn alte Jungs anrufen oder sonst irgendwas und werden auf jeden Fall viel schneller Drogen und andere Sachen hier im Umlauf.

When old boys call or do anything else, drugs and other things will definitely circulate here much faster.

Deswegen finde ich, also wenn du direkt hier dein Handy bekommst, ist nicht gut.

That's why I think it's not good if you get your phone directly here.

Das musst du ja auch irgendwie dann auch mal verdienen und zeigen, okay, hier, ich habe mich geändert, dass er dann sein Handy bekommt.

You have to earn it somehow and show, okay, here, I've changed, so that he then gets his phone.

Das alles ist eine Vorbereitung eigentlich.

Du wirst dann eben bald ganz entlassen werden, hast dann noch auf Bewährung, also wirst du auch noch Bewährungshelfer haben und so weiter.

Aber was sind deine Pläne für die Zeit danach in der Freiheit?

But what are your plans for the time afterwards in freedom?

Also ich mache gerade meinen Erstlehrer zum Scheiner.

So I am currently working on my first teacher certification.

Das mache ich, wenn ich weiter bin, also entlassen bin, mache ich es weiter, mache dann mein zweites, drittes Lehrjahr fertig.

I will do that when I am further along, so when I am done, I will continue, and then finish my second and third year of apprenticeship.

Also ich komme raus aus meiner Haft.

So I'm getting out of my detention.

Ich komme raus aus meinem alten Umkreis, Freundeskreis, Familie, alles weg.

I'm stepping away from my old circle, friend circle, family, everything is gone.

Ich ziehe meine eigene Wohnung ein.

I am moving into my own apartment.

Wegen meiner Straftat habe ich noch ein paar Schulden, die ich abzahlen muss.

Due to my criminal offense, I still have a few debts that I need to pay off.

Und dann kämpfe ich mich zurück auf meine Beine und mache meine Ausbildung fertig.

And then I fight my way back to my feet and finish my training.

Dann schauen wir mal, wie es weitergeht.

Er hat seine Arbeit angefangen und auch sonst geht es ihm gut.

Letztes Wochenende hatten wir hier ein großes Event, wo er mitgeholfen hat.

Last weekend we had a big event here, where he helped out.

Und das ist einfach schön, die Jungs dann auch so zu begleiten.

And it's just lovely to support the boys like that.

Bleiben denn viele der Jungs im Kontakt mit dem Jugendhof Seehaus?

Do many of the boys keep in touch with the youth home Seehaus?

Ja.

Yes.

Haben Sie das im Kontakt mit dem Seehaus, auch nach Ihrer Entlassung?

Do you have that in contact with the lake house, even after your discharge?

Ja, wir haben mit sehr vielen noch Kontakt.

Yes, we are still in contact with many of them.

Und das ist einfach, wie gesagt, schön, dann zu sehen.

And that is simply, as I said, nice to see.

Natürlich geht es nicht bei allen gut.

Of course, it doesn't go well for everyone.

Es werden auch wieder welche rückfällig, auch die allermeisten schaffen es.

Some will relapse again, but most will make it.

Und sie da zu begleiten.

And to accompany her there.

Und wir haben einige, die sich selbstständig gemacht haben.

And we have some who have become self-employed.

Und so ist es einfach toll.

And so it is simply great.

Wir haben sie aufgenommen in unsere Familien.

We have taken them in as part of our families.

So sind sie Familienmitglied.

So they are a family member.

Und können natürlich ständig im Kontakt sein.

And can of course be in constant contact.

Und auch mit den Ersten, die vor 20 Jahren bei uns waren, haben wir mit den allermeisten noch Kontakt.

And even with the first ones who were with us 20 years ago, we still have contact with most of them.

Wie begleitet denn das Seehaus zum Ende der Haftzeit diese Jugendlichen?

How does the lakeside house accompany these young people at the end of their detention period?

Gibt es da noch irgendwelche Möglichkeiten?

Are there still any possibilities?

Was wird denen mitgegeben, dass ein möglichst guter Start dann im normalen Leben stattfinden kann?

What is given to them so that they can have the best possible start in normal life?

Gut, die können bei uns das erste Lehrjahr machen.

Good, they can do their first year of training with us.

Wir bilden sie aus.

We train them.

Das sind Bauholz, Metall und Graz-Landschaftsbau.

These are construction timber, metal, and Graz landscaping.

Und jetzt bald auch noch Motorrad.

And soon also a motorcycle.

Und dann helfen wir ihnen, dass sie auch einen Ausbildungsplatz außerhalb finden.

And then we help them find an apprenticeship position elsewhere.

Das ist erstmal schwierig.

That's initially difficult.

Aber wenn sie es schaffen, dass sie ein Praktikum kriegen, dann haben sie es auch geschafft.

But if they manage to get an internship, then they have succeeded.

Weil im Praktikum müssen sie sich beweisen.

Because during the internship, they have to prove themselves.

Aber sie können sich auch beweisen.

But they can also prove themselves.

Viele Ausbilder beklagen sich ja über viele Jugendliche heutzutage,

Many trainers complain about many young people nowadays,

die oft keinen 8-Stunden-Tag durchhalten, unglücklich sind, kein Sozialverhalten haben.

who often can't manage an 8-hour workday, are unhappy, and lack social skills.

Und das haben unsere natürlich schon jahrelang eintrainiert.

And our dogs have of course been trained for years to do that.

Und von dem her können sie da auch bestehen.

And from that perspective, they can also succeed.

Und so konnten wir bisher alle vermitteln in Ausbildung oder Arbeit.

And so we have been able to place everyone in training or work so far.

Oder alle bis auf 99 Prozent.

Or all except for 99 percent.

Und ja, das ist unheimlich wichtig.

And yes, that is incredibly important.

Und gleichzeitig bieten wir auch Nachsorge an.

And at the same time, we also offer aftercare.

Zum einen haben wir öfters Familien, die anbieten, dass sie einen Ehemaligen von uns aufnehmen,

Und das ist ja unheimlich wertvoll, wenn man dann von der Arbeit heimkommt,

Work and education are a very important element in the lakeside house for alternative penal enforcement.

Ist jetzt der Grund dafür der, dass, wenn die Jugendlichen rauskommen,

Is the reason now that when the young people come out,

direkt einen Anschluss kriegen und einen Job haben?

get a direct connection and have a job?

Oder steckt da mehr dahinter?

Or is there more to it?

Genau, auf jeden Fall.

Exactly, absolutely.

Wenn sie nachher rauskommen und keine Arbeit haben,

If they come out later and have no job,

dann ist an sich schon vorprogrammiert, dass sie wieder rückfällig werden.

Then it is already more or less programmed that they will relapse again.

Das ist ganz wichtig, dass sie Arbeit haben, dass sie da auch Halt kriegen.

It is very important that they have work, so they can find stability there.

Und dass sie auch eine Freude am Beruf kriegen.

And that they also find joy in their profession.

Und das versuchen wir ihnen hier zu vermitteln.

And we are trying to convey this to them here.

Zum einen eben, dass sie lernen, einen durchdrücklichen Tagesablauf zu haben.

On one hand, that they learn to have a consistent daily routine.

Dass sie die Arbeitstugenden lernen.

That they learn work ethics.

Dass sie eben aber auch Selbstwertgefühl kriegen durch den Beruf.

That they also gain self-esteem through their profession.

Dass sie sehen, hey, ich kenne ja was,

That they see, hey, I know something.

und ich kenne was, was in der Gesellschaft Anerkennung findet.

And I know something that finds recognition in society.

Und wenn sie dann sehen, wir bilden immer aus anhand von Kundenaufträgen,

And when they see that we always train based on customer orders,

wenn sie dann sehen, dass der Kunde höchst zufrieden ist mit dem Möbelstück,

when they then see that the customer is extremely satisfied with the piece of furniture,

oder wenn sie auf dem Dach stehen,

or when they are on the roof,

ja, da dürfen sie ja auch stolz sein mit dem Richtfest,

Yes, they can be proud of the topping-out ceremony.

Und ich möchte gerne mal aus der Sicht der gastgebenden oder mitarbeitenden Familie fragen.

Und ich stelle mir das doch sehr schwierig vor.

And I find that very difficult to imagine.

Sie sprachen von vier oder fünf Jugendlichen, die eine Familie aufnehmen.

Ich kann mir nur vorstellen, ein oder zwei.

I can only imagine one or two.

Und wie geht eine Familie damit um?

And how does a family cope with it?

Und das müssen ja alle Familienglieder einverstanden und auch aktiv mitarbeiten in diesem Modell.

And all family members must agree and actively participate in this model.

Und wenn eine Familie sozusagen im Sack haut, ist ja dann auch für die Jugendlichen eine mittlere Katastrophe, denke ich.

And when a family, so to speak, falls apart, it is also a major disaster for the youth, I think.

Welche Erfahrungen haben Sie da?

What experiences do you have there?

Es sind tatsächlich sogar fünf bis sieben Jugendliche, die einer Familie zugeordnet werden.

Genau, das ist natürlich sehr spannend und herausfordernd für die Familien.

Sie müssen sich ihre Eltern teilen einerseits.

Wir haben auch ehemalige Hauseltern, die weiter hier auf dem Gelände wohnen.

We also have former house parents who still live on the premises.

Und da haben die Kinder oft jahrelang gefragt, wann haben wir endlich wieder Jungs.

And the children often asked for years, when will we finally have boys again.

Wenn die Kinder in ein ähnliches Alter kommen, dann wird es schwierig.

When the children reach a similar age, it will become difficult.

Im Gefängnis wird Ihnen jegliche Verantwortung abgenommen.

Sie müssen nicht waschen, Sie müssen nicht kochen.

Sie müssen offiziell zwar arbeiten,

aber wer es nicht tut, hat Einschluss in der Zelle.

Für das direkte Opfer, aber auch für meine Familie,

Und dass sie das wirklich sehen,

dass sie da auch Geschichten hören von Opfern

Sie ist eine Straftat in fünf Minuten vorbei

Aber eben, dass ein Opfer teilweise lebenslang darunter leidet,

Wenn Jugendliche ins Gefängnis kommen

Das ist aus meiner Sicht auch ein Fehler bei uns im System.

Ein Jugendlicher wird natürlich auch vom Anwalt oft dazu angeleitet,

zum einen, dass er das Opfer als unglaubwürdig darunter leidet,

und zum anderen eben die Schuld nicht klar zu benennen.

Und das ist für das Opfer wahnsinnig wichtig,

Dass es weiß, warum ist es passiert,

was ist passiert, warum hat es mich getroffen.

What happened, why did it hit me?

Dass es weiß, zeigt der Täter Reue,

tut es ihm leid.

He is sorry.

Und so ist es wichtig, dass das Opfer da eine ganz andere Rolle kriegt,

And so it is important that the victim takes on a completely different role there,

auch im Strafverfahren,

also in criminal proceedings,

und die Opferbedürfnisse da in den Mittelpunkt kommen.

and the needs of the victims are placed at the center.

Und wenn ein Jugendlicher beginnt, diese Schuld zu sehen,

And when a young person starts to see this guilt,

die er auf sich geladen hat,

spielt da dann nochmal der Glaube bei Ihnen eine wichtige Rolle?

Does faith play an important role for you then?

Wird da etwas dazu angeboten in dem Sinne?

Weil diese Schuld zu tragen für sich selbst

ist ja auch eine große Herausforderung zu sagen,

ich habe hier wirklich jemanden dauerhaft vielleicht sogar geschädigt.

Also wir bieten das eigentlich an.

Manche schaffen das auch ohne den Glauben,

Sie haben jetzt auch von diesen Opfer- und Tätergesprächen erzählt,

Zum einen braucht man einen überzeugten Justizminister,
