Ein bisschen Wehmut schwingt schon mit. Nun sind die Sommerferien vorbei.

A bit of nostalgia is definitely in the air. Now the summer vacation is over.

Und überall im Land hat wieder der normale Arbeitsalltag angefangen.

And all over the country, normal working life has begun again.

Auch wer keine Kinder oder Enkel im schulpflichtigen Alter hat,

Even those who do not have children or grandchildren of school age,

konnte in den letzten Wochen von der entspannten Stimmung profitieren.

Could benefit from the relaxed atmosphere in the last few weeks.

Auf Straßen, in Geschäften, bei der Arbeit.

On the streets, in stores, at work.

Jetzt müssen sich alle wieder ins Zeug legen.

Now everyone has to pull their weight again.

Da heißt es, sich einen Ruck geben. Vielleicht auch mit einem Lied.

That means to give oneself a push. Maybe also with a song.

Was man in Gottes Namen tut, ist allen Teilen recht und gut und kann ins Bauch gedeihen.

What one does in God's name is right and good in every respect and can prosper in the belly.

Eigentlich erstaunlich. Nur vier Lieder finde ich im evangelischen Gesangbuch in der Rubrik Arbeit.

Actually amazing. I only find four songs in the Protestant hymnal under the category of Work.

Und im katholischen Gotteslob suche ich das Stichwort vergeblich.

And in the Catholic hymn book, I search for the keyword in vain.

Dabei verbringt der Mensch doch immer die Zeit, um sich zu verlieben.

Yet people always spend time falling in love.

Und das ist das, was man in der Kirche macht.

And that is what you do in church.

Er hat doch nicht erst im 21. Jahrhundert einen Großteil seiner Zeit mit Arbeiten.

He didn't just spend a large part of his time working in the 21st century.

Mit Erwerbsarbeit, Care-Arbeit, Hausarbeit, Erziehungsarbeit.

With paid work, care work, housework, educational work.

Und es gibt sogar eine eigene protestantische Arbeitsethik.

And there is even a distinct Protestant work ethic.

Vor allem in den auf Kalvin zurückgehenden Kirchen der Reformation

Especially in the Reformation churches that trace back to Calvin.

wird da Erfolg im Beruf auch als Zeichen göttlicher Gnade und Zuwendung verstanden.

Success in one's profession is also understood there as a sign of divine grace and favor.

Etwas davon klingt auch in diesem Lied an.

Something of that can also be heard in this song.

Gott ist der, das Vermögenschaft, was Gutes zu vollbringen.

God is the one who has the ability to accomplish good.

Er gibt uns Ziegen, Mut und Kraft und lässt das Werk gelingen.

He gives us goats, courage, and strength, and makes the work succeed.

Ist er mit uns und sein Gedeih, so muss der Zug gesiegenen.

If he is with us and his prosperity, then the train must have triumphed.

Es wird sein, dass wir die Fülle haben.

It will be that we have abundance.

Lebensfülle wird heute aber vermehrt in den Zeiten gesucht,

Today, however, the fullness of life is increasingly sought in times,

die nicht der Arbeit gewidmet sind.

In der Generation meiner Kinder ist es recht selbstverständlich,

sich auch nach einem langen Studium nicht mit vollem Elan ins Arbeitsleben zu stürzen.

Viele junge Menschen wollen keinen 100-Prozent-Job annehmen,

um möglichst schnell Karriere zu machen.

to advance in one's career as quickly as possible.

Sondern lieber ihre Zeit mit anderen sinnvollen Dingen füllen.

But rather fill their time with other meaningful things.

Sie möchten Zeit mit anderen verbringen, Zeit für eigene Interessen haben,

You want to spend time with others, have time for your own interests,

Zeit zum Entspannen und ja, auch Zeit für ehrenamtliches gesellschaftliches Engagement.

Time to relax and yes, also time for voluntary social engagement.

Denn die eigene Arbeit soll auch denen zugutekommen,

For one's own work should also benefit others,

die mit wirtschaftlichem Erfolg nicht gesegnet sind.

those who are not blessed with economic success.

Auch davon singt unser Lied.

Our song sings of that too.

Wer ist nach Gottes reiche Tracht?

Who is in God's royal attire?

Und bleibt auf seinen Wegen.

And stays on his paths.

Der wird von ihm gar reich gemacht,

durch seinen milden Segen.

Da wird der Fromme froh und satt,

dass er von seiner Arbeit hat.

Auch armen Brot zu geben,

Wenn also ab sofort wieder überall im Land fleißig in die Hände gespuckt wird,

So, from now on, if people start diligently spitting in their hands again all over the country,

dann wünsche ich Ihnen, dass sich dadurch nicht nur das Bruttosozialprodukt steigert,

then I wish for you that this will not only increase the gross national product,

sondern dass Sie Freude haben an Ihrer Arbeit und Segen erfahren.
