148.4 Beweise für Jesus: Gibt es außerbiblische Quellen?

A list of names of alleged witnesses, any Romans or any historians or philosophers, just copy that into some forums, and it's so annoying, and when you go through it piece by piece and name by name, you think to yourself that now somehow you'll get the reward in the form of, oh, yes, thank you for the correction or something, then you just hear nothing anymore.

Könnte denn eine Erwähnung von Jesus in so einem antiken Text, und darum wird es nachher die ganze Zeit gehen, welche Beweiskraft könnte das haben?

What significance could a mention of Jesus in such an ancient text have, and this will be the focus of the discussion thereafter?

Und ist das von vornherein verloren oder gibt es schon die Möglichkeit, dass wir sagen, ja, also hier dieses neu gefundene Papyrus ist schon beeindruckend oder ist es von vornherein unmöglich?

And is it lost from the outset, or is there already the possibility that we can say, yes, this newly discovered papyrus is indeed impressive, or is it impossible from the very beginning?

Der allgemeine wissenschaftliche Konsens ist, dass wenn man drei Erwähnungen hat, unabhängige Erwähnungen in Quellen, dass die Persönlichkeit dann als historisch angesehen wird.

The general scientific consensus is that if there are three mentions, independent mentions in sources, then the personality is considered to be historical.

Das ist quasi so ein Schwellwert, den sie angesetzt haben. Insofern wäre das eine Rolle oder andere archäologische Artefakte, die dann zeigen, dass er existiert hat, Münzen oder sowas oder Statuen.

That's essentially a threshold they've set. In that respect, it would be artifacts or other archaeological items that would show that he existed, coins or something like that, or statues.

Also bei Jesus müsste man ja mindestens die Vorhaut finden und es gibt ja auch einige, die behaupten, sie hätten das gefunden.

Well, one would at least have to find the foreskin of Jesus, and there are also some who claim to have found it.

Siehst du nicht die Kreise des Saturns, die Vorhaut?

So, also Hefte raus, Diktat, jetzt wird gearbeitet und ich habe diese ganzen antiken, angeblichen Zitate mal in so Rubriken eingeordnet und das erste Kapitel, die erste Rubrik, da geht es darum, Zitate zu finden noch zu Lebzeiten von Jesus.

So, get out your notebooks, dictation, now we’re going to work, and I have categorized all these ancient, so-called quotes into sections, and the first chapter, the first section, is about finding quotes that date back to the lifetime of Jesus.

Also da bestünde zumindest theoretisch die Möglichkeit einer direkten Zeugenschaft und es gibt tatsächlich einige jüdische Arten.

So there would at least theoretically be the possibility of direct witness testimony, and there are indeed some Jewish species.

Also Autoren, die also ausführlich über diese damaligen Geschehnisse und Gepflogenheiten berichtet haben, so Chronisten oder so oder man könnte sich auch vorstellen in Briefen oder so.

So authors who reported in detail about these events and customs at that time, such as chroniclers, or one might also imagine in letters or so.

Also da gibt es schon Möglichkeiten und man hat auch ein paar Kandidaten, also Personen, die diesem Geschäft nachgegangen sind, aber in diesen Schriften wird Jesus nicht erwähnt und man denkt so, ja mein Gott, das wurden sie halt nicht erwähnt.

So there are indeed possibilities, and there are also a few candidates, that is, people who have pursued this business, but Jesus is not mentioned in these writings, and one thinks, well my God, they just weren't mentioned.

Ja, aber es gibt ein paar, die hätten sie eigentlich erwähnen müssen und dazu zählen Nummer eins.

Yes, but there are a few that actually should have been mentioned, and number one is among them.

Philon von Alexandria, er lebte circa im Jahr 15, also man ist nicht ganz sicher, im Jahr 10 oder 15 vor Christus geboren und gestorben 40 nach Christus und er war ein jüdischer Philosoph und Theologe und er beschrieb jetzt in seinen Texten die verschiedenen jüdischen Gruppierungen, die es gab im Palästina des ersten Jahrhunderts.

Philo of Alexandria, he lived around the year 15, so it is not quite certain if he was born in the year 10 or 15 before Christ and died in 40 after Christ. He was a Jewish philosopher and theologian and he described in his texts the various Jewish groups that existed in first-century Palestine.

Und er erwähnte Jesus.

And he mentioned Jesus.

Und ich habe noch einen zweiten und zwar er heißt Justus von Tiberias und er stammte jetzt tatsächlich aus Galiläa und lebte ungefähr in der ersten Hälfte des ersten Jahrhunderts.

And I have another one, namely he is called Justus of Tiberias and he actually came from Galilee and lived approximately in the first half of the first century.

Genauer weiß man es leider nicht, aber erste Hälfte, das ist ja, wenn Jesus also um 30 gekreuzigt wurde und so, dann würde das da reinpassen.

Unfortunately, one does not know exactly, but the first half, that is, if Jesus was crucified around 30, then that would fit in there.

Und er war ein Chronist der jüdischen Königsgeschichte.

And he was a chronicler of Jewish royal history.

Es gab nämlich zahlreiche jüdische Könige und von seinen Werken ist zwar nichts erhalten, aber diese Werke werden von anderen zitiert, unter anderem von Josephus, dem ich mich nachher noch sehr ausführlich widmen wird, ist so auch ein bisschen der Hauptteil des Beitrags.

There were indeed numerous Jewish kings, and while none of their works have survived, these works are cited by others, including Josephus, to whom I will later dedicate a very detailed section; this is also somewhat the main part of the contribution.

Also Josephus erwähnt ihn und auch andere Autoren, dort ist aber auch keine Erwähnung von Jesus zu finden.

Josephus also mentions him, as do other authors, but there is no mention of Jesus to be found there either.

Also obwohl andere Autoren, die die damalige Zeit als Chronisten beschreiben wollten und sich da natürlich zahlreicher Quellen bedienten, ist aber jetzt nichts von Justus von Tiberias bekannt, obwohl es ja naheliegend gewesen wäre, ihn dann zu erwähnen, wenn da irgendein Jesus vorkommt.

So although other authors who wanted to describe that time as chroniclers naturally made use of numerous sources, nothing is known about Justus of Tiberias, even though it would have been obvious to mention him if any Jesus were to appear.

Ja, Christian, irgendwelche Anmerkungen dazu?

Yes, Christian, any comments on that?

Ich habe zwei Punkte.

I have two points.

Der erste Punkt ist, dass Jesus sechs bis acht vor Christus geboren ist, wahrscheinlich, also je nachdem.

The first point is that Jesus was born six to eight years before Christ, probably, depending on the case.

Und es gab irgendein Problem, der Oktavian wurde quasi als Kaiser erst später in Augustus umgewandt und deswegen hat sich irgendein Mönch im Mittelalter sich verheddert bei der ganzen Chronologie.

And there was some problem; Octavian was only later referred to as Augustus and that's why some monk in the Middle Ages got tangled up in the whole chronology.

Deswegen ist Jesus vor Jesus geboren.

That is why Jesus was born before Jesus.

Und damit hat Philo eigentlich noch sechs bis acht Jahre mehr Zeit gehabt, irgendwas über ihn zu schreiben und die Spanne, die Überlappung wird größer.

And with that, Philo actually had another six to eight years to write something about him, and the gap, the overlap, will grow larger.

Kleine Randbemerkung, das Jahr Null existiert nicht, weil es gab keine Zahl Null.

A small side note, the year zero does not exist because there was no number zero.

Das Jahr Eins vor Christus geht direkt.

The year one before Christ goes straight.

Das Jahr Eins nach Christus, der fehlt also ein Jahr, wenn man das als Zahl betrachtet.

The year one after Christ is missing a year, if you consider it as a number.

Aber das interessiert nur Mathematiker.

But that only interests mathematicians.

Zum Justus von Tiberias will ich noch was sagen.

I want to say something about Justus of Tiberias.

Seine Werke sind verschollen.

His works are lost.

Das heißt, das ist nur ein anderes Wort dafür, da ja Christen die Hoheit über die gesamte Literatur übernommen haben, haben die dafür gesorgt, dass wir von den 100 Prozent aller antiken Schriften nur ein Prozent bekommen haben.

That means, that is just another word for it, since Christians have taken control over all literature, they have ensured that we only receive one percent of all ancient writings from the 100 percent.

Und das war in den 99 Prozent drin.

And that was in the 99 percent.

Das heißt, es ist nicht nur Geschichte.

That means it is not just history.

Es sind auch Mathematikbücher verschollen oder nicht kopiert worden oder absichtlich zerstört worden, wir wissen es nicht, sondern auch Mathematikbücher und so weiter, weil die halt nicht so richtig christlich waren.

Mathematics books have also been lost or not copied or deliberately destroyed; we do not know, but also mathematics books and so on, because they were not really Christian.

Das ist der Grund, warum wir die nicht haben.

That is the reason why we don't have them.

Das heißt, es steckt ein Grund dahinter.

That means there is a reason behind it.

Jetzt könnte man sagen, warum sollten Christen ein Buch nicht weiter überliefern, das zwar von Josephus erwähnt wird, der weiter überliefert worden ist.

Now one could ask, why should Christians not continue to pass down a book that is mentioned by Josephus, who himself has been transmitted further?

Aber bei Josephus immer noch nicht, das kommt erst später.

But with Josephus, not yet; that comes later.

Ja, ja, ich meine.

Yes, yes, I mean.

Warum wird ausgerechnet das Buch, das möglicherweise die Jesusgeschichte beschreiben würde, vernichtet?

Why is it that the book that might describe the story of Jesus is being destroyed?

Und es gibt nur zwei Gründe, wenn das absichtlich passiert ist.

And there are only two reasons if this happened intentionally.

Ich spekuliere hier natürlich.

I am of course speculating here.

Der eine Grund ist, er wird nicht erwähnt und es steht nichts drin.

One reason is that it is not mentioned, and there is nothing in it.

Ich meine, der andere Grund, es steht etwas drin, was vielleicht nicht so toll ist über ihn.

I mean, the other reason is that there is something in there that might not be so great about him.

Aber dann könnte man sagen, dass es vielleicht jemand zitieren würde, weil ja so wenig über Jesus berichtet wird, dass man wenigstens das zitiert.

But then one could say that perhaps someone would quote it because so little is reported about Jesus that at least that is quoted.

Das ist beides eine Spekulation.

That is both a speculation.

Man kann nicht sagen, was in dem Buch drinsteht, was nicht vorhanden ist.

One cannot say what is in the book that is not present.

Aber ich würde mich anschließen für Jörns Argumentation, dass wenn da was über Jesus drinstehen würde,

But I would join Jörn's argument that if there were something about Jesus in there,

dass das von den Kirchenlehrern und Kirchenhistorikern dann begierig aufgegriffen worden wäre.

that it would have been eagerly taken up by the church teachers and church historians.

Und von den Chronisten damals einfach nur als ein weiterer Fakt.

And simply regarded by the chroniclers of that time as another fact.

Weil sie haben ja wirklich da ganz viele Gruppen akribisch aufgeführt und beschrieben, was glauben die, was haben die für Riten und so weiter.

Because they have really listed and described a lot of groups meticulously, what do they believe, what rituals do they have, and so on.

Warum?

Why?

Warum soll man dann ausgerechnet diese nicht nennen, weil sie ja auch sehr interessant ist.

Why should one not mention this one in particular, as it is also very interesting?

Also je ähnlicher Gruppen sind, desto uninteressanter ist es darüber zu schreiben, also langweiliger.

The more similar groups are, the less interesting it is to write about them, thus the more boring.

Und jetzt hast du da plötzlich so einen Jesus und so weiter.

And now you suddenly have this Jesus and so on.

Aber lass uns mal so einen kurzen Zwischeneinschub bringen, aber mit Betonung auf kurz.

But let's have a short interjection, but with an emphasis on short.

Nehmen wir mal an, sie hätten den erwähnt.

Let's assume they mentioned him.

Also diese beiden zeitgenössischen Autoren hätten das erwähnt.

So these two contemporary authors would have mentioned that.

Und nehmen wir mal an, sie wären sogar direkte Augenzeugen gewesen.

And let's assume they were even direct witnesses.

Wenn sie geschrieben hätten, ja und ich habe den gesehen.

If they had written, yes and I saw him.

Und ich habe auch diese Rede gehört, ich habe mir nicht dabei gedacht, das damals, aber ich habe den gesehen.

And I also heard that speech, I didn't think about it back then, but I saw him.

Würde das, wenn das da stünde, würde das für uns Ketzer was ändern?

Would that change anything for us heretics if that were written there?

Würden wir das dann glauben oder würden wir sagen, ja dann war er auch nur einer von denen, die da halt was erfinden.

Would we then believe it or would we say, well then he was just one of those who invent something?

Wir können ja nicht wissen, dass es wahr ist.

We cannot know that it is true.

Und darum geht es ja letztlich.

And that is ultimately what it is all about.

Wenn da zwei verschiedene Quellen sind, dann hätten wir schon zwei von dreien.

If there are two different sources, then we would already have two out of three.

Und wir würden dann quasi schon sagen, dass die Hysterizität dann im wissenschaftlichen Sinne gegeben ist.

And we would then basically say that hysteresis is given in the scientific sense.

Weil das...

Because that...

Zwei Leute, die quasi unabhängig, denen das egal ist, dann eine Rolle spielt.

Two people who are basically independent, and who don't care, then play a role.

Aber es wären dann auch nur noch zwei von dreien.

But then there would only be two out of three left.

Das heißt, es wäre eine Persönlichkeit, die wahrscheinlich historisch wäre, aber noch nicht gesichert.

That means it would be a personality that is probably historical but not yet confirmed.

Das wäre so wie die harte Wissenschaft damit umgeht.

That would be how the hard sciences handle it.

Also ich bin da irgendwie unentschieden.

Well, I'm somewhat undecided about that.

Ich müsste mir dann den Text genau angucken.

I would have to examine the text closely.

Und was ist das für eine Person?

And what kind of person is that?

Es könnte ja auch sein, dass zum Beispiel...

It could also be that, for example...

Weißt du, früher war ja auch Theologie oder halt Leute, die schreiben konnten.

You know, in the past there were also theology or people who could write.

Und die so intellektuell...

And the so intellectual...

Die so intellektuelle Berufe hatten irgendwie.

The intellectual professions had somehow.

Das war ja oft nicht so richtig getrennt.

That was often not really separate.

Das kann ja sein, dass jemand irgendwie so eine Art Priesterrolle hatte.

It may be that someone had some sort of priestly role.

So nebenberuflich war der in so einer Gemeinde tätig.

He was active in such a community on a part-time basis.

Und hauptberuflich war er halt Chronist.

And as a main profession, he was a chronicler.

Und dann hat er das halt als Chronist aufgeschrieben.

And then he wrote it down as a chronicler.

Aber in dem...

But in the...

So wie Harald Lesch.

Just like Harald Lesch.

Wo man denkt, der ist eigentlich Wissenschaftler.

Where one thinks, he is actually a scientist.

Aber der hat trotzdem eine religiöse Botschaft.

But it still has a religious message.

Und wenn der jetzt ein wissenschaftliches Buch schreiben würde,

And if he were to write a scientific book now,

und dann macht er auch ein paar Bemerkungen über Jesus,

and then he also makes a few remarks about Jesus,

dann wird man in tausend Jahren, wenn man das finden wird, sagen,

"Then in a thousand years, when one finds that, one will say,"

ah, da, siehste, siehste, siehste.

Ah, there, you see, you see, you see.

Und der war Wissenschaftler.

And he was a scientist.

Aber heute wissen wir, ja gut, das gilt ja nicht.

But today we know, well, that doesn't count.

Weil er hat diese Doppelfunktion.

Because he has this dual function.

Und das eine hat mit dem anderen nichts zu tun.

And one has nothing to do with the other.

Und diese Trennung, die wissen wir heute.

And we know this separation today.

Aber in tausend Jahren wird man die vergessen haben.

But in a thousand years, they will have been forgotten.

Und dann nimmt man es als Beweis.

And then it is taken as proof.

Und deswegen bin ich da irgendwie so ein bisschen misstrauisch.

And that's why I'm a bit suspicious about it.

Ich meine, ein gutes Beispiel ist, wenn man Mythen anschaut,

I mean, a good example is when you look at myths,

mit zum Beispiel die Arthus-Legende.

with, for example, the Arthurian legend.

Über den gab es auch unabhängige Geschichten.

There were also independent stories about him.

Aber das waren Legenden.

But those were legends.

Die waren legendär.

They were legendary.

Und die haben sich eben nicht mit historischen Details abgemüht.

And they have not struggled with historical details.

Und das...

And that...

Das ist ein Zeichen, dass, auch wenn da drei oder vier Arthus-Legenden

That is a sign that, even if there are three or four Arthur legends,

dann quasi durch die Gegengeister,

then basically through the opposing spirits,

dann würde ein Historiker nicht sagen,

then a historian would not say,

dass Arthus eine historische Persönlichkeit war.

that Arthur was a historical figure.

Okay, gehen wir ins nächste Kapitel.

Das erste Kapitel, da ging es jetzt um Leute,

die noch zu Lebzeiten von Jesus irgendwas hätten aufschnappen können

Und jetzt gehen wir also in der Zeit nach vorne.

Und zwar zu Flavius Josephus wird oft abgekürzt.

And this is often abbreviated to Flavius Josephus.

Einfach als Josephus.

Simply as Josephus.

Und er hat viele Bücher geschrieben.

And he has written many books.

Er war ein jüdischer Historiker.

He was a Jewish historian.

Und sein Hauptwerk, das hier eine Rolle spielt,

And his main work, which plays a role here,

ist das Testimonium Flavianum.

It is the Testimonium Flavianum.

Das sind also diese großen Stichwörter, die ihr euch merken müsst.

So these are the key points that you need to remember.

Testimonium Flavianum von Josephus.

Testimony of Flavius Josephus.

Er lebte von circa 37 nach Christus bis circa 100 nach Christus.

He lived from around 37 AD to around 100 AD.

Also kein Augenzeuge mehr.

So no more eyewitness.

Aber es könnten zu seiner Zeit noch Augenzeugen gelebt haben.

But there may have still been eyewitnesses alive at his time.

Die es ihm dann erzählt haben oder so.

That told him about it or something like that.

Also schon interessant.

Well, that's interesting.

Und in seinen Schriften kommt Jesus zwar vor,

And although Jesus appears in his writings,

aber in der historisch-kritischen Bibelforschung besteht also ein klarer Konsens darüber,

but in historical-critical biblical research there is a clear consensus on this,

und zwar auch unter Theologen,

and indeed also among theologians,

dass diese Abschnitte in der Spätantike gefälscht wurden

that these passages were forged in late antiquity

und dass da ein Abschnitt eingefügt wurde, der also Jesus erwähnt.

and that a section was added that mentions Jesus.

Und ich werde es gleich vorlesen.

And I will read it out loud right away.

Josephus fasste ja letztlich zusammen, was er gehört oder gelesen hatte.

Josephus ultimately summarized what he had heard or read.

Das ist seine Arbeit.

That is his work.

Er hat aufgeschnappt, was wurde so gesagt, was gibt es so für Quellen und so weiter.

He picked up what was said, what sources there are, and so on.

Er war dort kein eigener Zeuge.

He was not a witness there.

Und in dieser betreffenden Schrift geht es jetzt darum,

And in this relevant document, it is now about

was er über Christen gehört hatte, und zwar Christen in Rom.

what he had heard about Christians, namely Christians in Rome.

Er hat einige Jahre in Rom gelebt, soweit ich weiß, seine letzten Jahre auch.

He lived in Rome for several years, as far as I know, his last years as well.

Und er hat sich jetzt da praktisch,

And he has practically settled there now,

gewundert, dass diese römischen Christen da ihren Jesus noch immer verehren,

wondered that these Roman Christians still worship their Jesus there,

obwohl er doch gekreuzigt worden ist.

although he has been crucified.

Und das hat er irgendwie nicht so richtig auf die Reihe bekommen.

And he somehow didn't manage to get that right.

Und das Zitat, das da jetzt so berühmt ist, kommt jetzt, und zwar es lautet wie folgt, Zitat.

And the quote that is now so famous comes now, and it reads as follows, quote.

Um diese Zeit lebte Jesus ein weiser Mensch, wenn man ihn überhaupt ein Mensch nennen darf.

At that time, a wise man lived, Jesus, if one may even call him a man.

Er war nämlich der Vollbringer ganz unglaublicher,

He was indeed the accomplisher of quite incredible,

welcher Taten und der Lehrer aller Menschen, die mit Freuden die Wahrheit aufnahmen.

which deeds and the teacher of all people who joyfully accepted the truth.

Und so zog er viele Juden und auch viele Heiden an sich.

And so he drew many Jews and also many Gentiles to himself.

Dieser war der Christus.

This was the Christ.

Und obgleich ihn Pilatus auf Betreiben der Vornehmen unseres Volkes zum Kreuz des Todes verurteilte,

And although Pilate condemned him to the cross of death at the instigation of the nobles of our people,

wurden doch seine früheren Anhänger ihm nicht untreu,

his former followers did not become unfaithful to him,

denn er erschien ihn an dritten Tage wieder lebend,

for he appeared to him on the third day alive again,

wie Gott gesandt,

like sent by God,

bis die erste Propheten dies und tausend andere wunderbare Dinge von ihm vorher verkündet hatten.

until the first prophets had foretold this and a thousand other wonderful things about him.

Und noch bis auf den heutigen Tag besteht das Volk der Christen, die sich nach ihm nennen, fort.

And still to this day, the people of Christians, who are named after him, continue to exist.

Das ist also das berühmte Testimonium Flavium.

So that is the famous Testimonium Flavianum.

Und man geht davon aus, dass es eine Fälschung ist.

And it is assumed that it is a forgery.

Und ich will kurz die Gründe darlegen.

And I want to briefly outline the reasons.

Und zwar diese Passage unterbricht den Fluss,

And indeed, this passage interrupts the flow,

den Textfluss seiner sonstigen Erzählung,

the flow of text in his other narrative,

die Passage vorher und nachher schließt aneinander an.

The passage before and after connects to each other.

Und zwischendrin klingt es plötzlich wie so eine eingeschobene Werbesendung für Jesus.

And in between, it suddenly sounds like an inserted commercial for Jesus.

Josephus war selber Jude.

Josephus was himself a Jew.

Das wäre er aber nicht gewesen,

But that wouldn't have been him,

wenn er wirklich davon überzeugt war,

if he was really convinced of it,

Jesus sei der Christus und eben kein Mensch.

Jesus is the Christ and not just a man.

Was er sagte, ja, wenn man ihn ein Mensch nennen kann,

What he said, yes, if one can call him a human being,

und er wäre jetzt von den Toten aufgestanden.

and he would have risen from the dead now.
