なんで陶芸、どういうきっかけとか、どういうところが好きなんですか?

Why pottery, what inspired you, and what do you like about it?

大きく言うと、二つあります。

Broadly speaking, there are two.

一つは、これを陶芸するときに、新しいグループと一緒に陶芸するときに、最初に作るものはお茶碗。

One thing is that when doing pottery with a new group, the first thing we make is a tea bowl.

日本でのことなんだけど、茶碗を作りなさいっていうふうに言って。

It's about something in Japan, but it says to make a rice bowl.

それで、一番初めての挑戦として、ある意味で大きさ的にも、誰でも、いくつかのろくろを使うかとか、別にして、誰でも作れる。

So, as the very first challenge, in a sense due to its size, anyone can make it, whether using some potter's wheels or not.

大体ある程度の形、手に持つくらいの大きさなんで。

It's roughly a certain shape, about the size you can hold in your hand.

まあ、1、2時間あればできるんだけど、

Well, I could do it in about 1 or 2 hours, but...

その、どうして茶碗っていうと、毎日使える道具だからっていうのもあるんだけど、

これは日本だけじゃなくて、縄文時代の日本だけではなくて、ヨーロッパとか南米とかでも、もともと土だったものを、

あの、焼く、火を加えると、その土が石に変わる。石に変化する。っていうのは、火に魔法があって、火を加えると土が石に変わる。

Um, when you burn it and add fire, that clay transforms into stone. It changes into stone. This means that fire has magic, and when you add fire, the clay turns into stone.

うん。

そういうふうに、その火の魔法を利用して、

In that way, by utilizing the magic of fire,

まあ、土が石に変わる。それによって、その、毎日手に、魔法を手にすることができて、

で、まあ、そういうふうなことを忘れずに、毎日使ってる道具で、あ、マジック、魔法っていうのは身近にあるものであって、

毎日手にしてる魔法を大事にすることが、他に、その人生につながってるというふうに思ってほしいんで、

あー、まあ、あの、日本の、そういう、昔の伝統の土壁っていうのは、えー、湿気の多い、えー、まあ、夏に、えー、吸い込んで、えー、湿気を吸い込んで、そして冬の、

Ah, well, you know, in Japan, those traditional earthen walls, um, during the humid, uh, summer, they, um, absorb moisture, and then in the winter,

陶芸をしたものを焼くと

When you fire what you made in ceramics...

ものすごい長いスパンでの

Over an incredibly long span.

時間の軸と森と生きている

Living with the axis of time and the forest.

土がつながっているというのを

The earth is connected.

すごい感じられやすいので

It's very easy to feel.

そうですね

その2つの理由から

For those two reasons.

陶芸は大好きで

I love pottery.

火窯を使うビゼンだとか

Such as Bizen pottery made using a kiln.

中にはマシコとかも

Some of them include Mashiko as well.

火窯を使う

焼き物は大好きで

I love ceramics.

どっちかというと

器を作る方よりも
