いきなりカンパネルラが

Suddenly, Campanella appeared.

思い切ったというように

As if to say bold.

少しどもりながら

A little stammering.

咳き込んで言いました

I said, coughing.

序盤には

In the early stages,

ああそうだ

Ah, that's right.

僕のお母さんは

My mother is

あの遠い一つの塵のように見える

It looks like a distant speck of dust.

橙色の三角標のあたりにいらっしゃって

Please stay around the orange triangular marker.

今僕のことを

Right now about me

考えているんだった

I was thinking.

と思いながら

While thinking so

ぼんやりして黙っていました

I was dazed and silent.

僕はお母さんが

I am my mother.

本当に幸いになるなら

If it truly leads to happiness.

どんなことでもする

I will do whatever it takes.

けれども

However

一体どんなことが

What on earth is happening?

お母さんの一番の幸いなんだろう

It must be the greatest happiness for my mother.

カンパネルラは

Campanella is

なんだか泣き出したいのを

I feel like I want to cry for some reason.

一生懸命こらえているようでした

It seemed like you were trying very hard to endure.

君のお母さんは

Your mother is

何にもひどいことないじゃないの

There’s nothing terrible happening, is there?

序盤にはびっくりして叫びました

I was surprised and yelled at the beginning.

僕わからない

I don't understand.

けれども

However

誰だって本当にいいことをしたら

If anyone really does something good

一番幸いなんだね

That's the greatest blessing, isn't it?

だからお母さんは

So, Mom...

僕を許してくださると思う

I think you will forgive me.

カンパネルラは

Campanella is

何か本当に決心しているように見えました

It looked like you were really determined about something.

にわかに

Suddenly

車の中が

Inside the car.

ぱっと白く明るくなりました

It suddenly became bright white.

見るともう実に金剛石や草の露や

When I look, there are indeed diamonds and the dew on the grass.

あらゆる立派さを集めたような

As if gathered all the grandeur.

きらびやかな銀河の川床の上を

On the shimmering riverbed of the galaxy.

水は声もなく形もなく流れ

Water flows without a voice and without a form.

その流れの真ん中に

In the middle of that flow

ぼーっと青白く五光の差した

A faint, bluish-white light shone softly.

一つの島が見えるのでした

I could see an island.

その島の平らな頂に

On the flat summit of that island

立派な目も覚めるような

A splendid and eye-catching thing.

白い十字架が立って

A white cross stands.

それはもう凍った北極の雲でいたと言ったらいいか

Should I say it was like a frozen Arctic cloud?

すきっとした金色の円光をいただいて

Receiving a bright golden halo.

静かに永久に立っているのでした

It stood quietly forever.

そして

And then

ハレルヤ

Hallelujah

前からも後ろからも声が上がりました

Voices were raised from both the front and the back.

振り返ってみると

When I look back on it

車室の中の旅人たちは

The travelers in the car compartment are

皆まっすぐに着物のひだを垂れ

Everyone lets the folds of their kimono hang straight down.

黒いバイブルを胸に当てたり

Pressing the black Bible against my chest.

水晶の珠図をかけたり

Drawing a diagram of crystal beads.

どのようにも

In any way.

その人も

That person too.

つつましく

Modestly

指を組み合わせて

Interlock your fingers.

そっちに祈っているのでした

I was praying over there.

思わず二人とも

Both of them couldn't help but...

まっすぐに立ち上がりました

I stood up straight.

カンパネルラの方は

As for Campanella,

まるで熟した

Like a ripe one.

りんごの証のように

Like a sign of an apple

美しく輝いて見えました

It looked beautifully shining.

そして

And then.

島と十字架とは

What the island and the cross are.

だんだん後ろの方へ移ってゆきました

I gradually moved to the back.

向こう岸も

The other shore too.

青白くぼーっと光って煙

A pale, hazy light glowing and smoking.

時々

Sometimes

やっぱりススキが

As expected, it's the pampas grass.

風にひるがえるらしく

It seems to flutter in the wind.

さっと

Quickly

その銀色が煙って

That silver is smoky.

息でもかけたように見え

It looks as if one just blew on it.

また

Again

たくさんのリンドウの花が

Many gentian flowers.

草をかくれたり

Hiding in the grass.

出たりするのは

It comes out sometimes.

優しいキツネ火のように思われました

It felt like a gentle fox fire.

それもほんのちょっとの間

Just for a little while.

川と汽車との間は

Between the river and the train.

ススキの列で遮られ

Blocked by a row of silver grass.

白鳥の島は

Swan Island is

二度ばかり

Twice or so.

後ろの方に見えましたが

I saw it in the back.

時期もうずーっと

It's been a long time since then.

遠く小さく

Far away and small

絵のようになってしまい

It has become like a picture.

また

Again

ススキがザワザワ鳴って

The pampas grass is rustling.

とうとうすっかり

Finally completely.

見えなくなってしまいました

It has become invisible.

ジョバンニの後ろには

Behind Giovanni

いつから乗っていたのか

Since when have you been riding it?

背の高い

Tall

黒い担ぎをした

I carried a black burden.

カトリック風の天さんが

Angel-san in a Catholic style

まんまるな緑の瞳を

Round, green eyes.

じっとまっすぐに落として

Drop it straight down gently.

まだ何か

Is there still something?

言葉か声かが

Either words or voice.

そっちから伝わってくるのを

What comes through from your side.

慎んで聞いている

I am listening respectfully.

というように見えました

It appeared to be like that.

旅人たちは

The travelers

静かに席に戻り

Quietly return to your seat.

二人も

Both of them.

胸いっぱいの

Full of emotions.

悲しみに似た

Similar to sorrow

新しい気持ちを

A new feeling.

何気なく違った言葉で

Casually in different words.

そっと

Gently

話し合ったのです

We discussed it.
