まずなんで渡航してるのかっていうところから

First of all, let's start with why I am traveling.

オーストラリアのメルボルンってとこにいて

I'm in a place called Melbourne in Australia.

私海外大学院生なんで

I'm an international graduate student.

で、あのまあ海外大学院生ですよ

ずっとっていうか、去年から

It's been a while, or rather, since last year.

で、コロナの状況であって

ずっともうオンライン授業してて

I've been taking online classes for a long time now.

で、なんか去年の10月ぐらいから

オーストラリアの国境が開き始めて

Australia's borders are beginning to open.

で、なんかそれでもオンライン授業続けてたけど

So, even with that, I kept taking online classes.

ちょっとそろそろ

I've been thinking it's about time to travel, and I've been continuing online classes somehow even after that.

しても良さそうだなぁみたいな感じになったので、ちょっといろんな状況が なので渡航しました

It seemed like it was okay to do it, so given various situations, I traveled.

Finally, it's been about 3 years.

大学院行くって決まってから そう、入学が許可された時にちょうど

Since I decided to go to graduate school, it was just when I was granted admission.

コロナになって なんか

Since the coronavirus started, something...

でもコロナがこんな続くと私も思ってなかったから なんか半年ぐらい入学遅らせたらいけるだろうって思って半年入学遅らせて

But I didn't think the pandemic would last this long, so I thought it would be fine to delay my enrollment by about six months.

結局全然国境開かなくて 1年ぐらい

In the end, the borders haven't opened at all for about a year.

リモート授業やってって感じですね 長かったねそう考えると

It feels like we've been doing remote classes for a long time, when you think about it.

めっちゃ長かった 大学院の準備から考えると

It was really long, considering the preparations for graduate school.

しかもさ、オーストラリア意外に飛行機長かったよね

私さ、結構海外めっちゃ行ってたけど なんか何度乗っても飛行機が苦手で

You know, I've traveled abroad quite a lot, but somehow I just can't get used to flying no matter how many times I do it.

なんか、なんか狭いっていうか 閉ざされてる感がもうすっごい嫌でさ

It's just that I really hate the feeling of being cramped or closed in.

足とかムズムズしてくるよね

My legs start to feel restless, don't they?

そうそうそう なんかエコノミー症候群とか大丈夫かなとか

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about things like economy class syndrome.

めっちゃ心配してたんだけど 結局なんかガラガラだったの、飛行機が

I was really worried, but in the end, the plane was kind of empty.

で、なんか最初その飛行機の航空会社の人に

So, at first, I talked to the airline representative about that plane.

なんか 横の席に人いるんですけど大丈夫ですかって確認されて

"Someone is asking if it's okay that there's a person sitting next to me."

え、いないこととかあるのかなって思ったんだけど

Uh, I was wondering if there might be times when you're not around.

え、帰れるならじゃあ横に人がいないところでって言ったらもう 横どころか前後左右誰もいないみたいな

Well, if I can go home, then I said to be somewhere without anyone next to me, but it feels like there's no one around me at all, not even in front, behind, or to the sides.

えぇー そんな…

Eh? Really...?

余裕で2席使って寝っ転がって あー、よかった、それは

I comfortably used two seats to lie down and thought, "Ah, that's good."

そう、普通にストレッチとかもしてたから そんな人見たことない?

Yeah, I was doing regular stretches and stuff, so you've never seen someone like that?

全然エコノミー症候群の兆しもないし なんか、うん、快適でした

There were no signs of economy class syndrome at all, and, well, it was comfortable.

しかもさ、行く前さ あの、スーツケースがどうやっても3個にしかならないとか言ってさ

Moreover, before going, I said that no matter what, the suitcase just wouldn't fit into more than three pieces.

なんか1年分の服とかさあ入れてさあ今今後さあオーストラリア冬だからやばい 両方ととかも入れなきゃいけないみたいだ

I have to pack a year's worth of clothes, and since it's winter in Australia now, it's going to be tough. It seems like I also have to pack both thick and lightweight clothes.

で本当は布団とかを持ってかなきゃいけないんだけど量だから うん

Actually, I have to bring bedding and stuff, but because of the quantity, yeah.

と思ってから諦めてうずすぎ

I thought about it but then gave up and felt too anxious.

しようと思った結果そんな感じになったけどでもまだ大きいスーツケース1個とちっちゃい の2つになっちゃって

I was thinking of doing it that way, and that's how it turned out, but I still ended up with one large suitcase and two small ones.

結局参考だったんだ そうでも諦めて

In the end, it was helpful. Even so, I gave up.

その 荷物を送ろうって決めたのがでもなんかあの家出る連日で

I decided to send that package right around the time I was leaving the house every day.

やばいってなってまーちゃんにヘルプみたいな うちの家族の代わりにちょっと荷物を送ってくださいみたいな感じでしてもらったんだけど

It's like I'm in a bind and asked Ma-chan for help, like could you send some luggage on behalf of my family?

しばらくうちの玄関にはもうちゃんのでっかい荷物が ありました

For a while, there was a big package from Mochan at our entrance.

なんかそれもさ今コロナだからかなんか日本の有名な宅配会社がなんか使用の宅配をやってくれなくて

I guess it's because of COVID right now, but a famous delivery company in Japan isn't doing home delivery or something.

When I arrive, I'll say "the box is falling apart."

なんかしかもボロボロってか4分の1ぐらい穴開いてきて

あの上になんか超適当にビニールテープぐるぐる巻きにされて

It's wrapped in a completely random way with vinyl tape up there.

I was treated like gum.

I don't know, and quite a bit, too.

It's mostly plastic or something like that.

ガムテープ20とかにしたつもりだったんだけど

I thought I was going to use tape number 20.

It feels like I was attacked unusually.

でその日雨降ってたから

服とか入れてたら服びしょびしょになって届いて

If you put clothes in, they arrive soaking wet.

I put it in a bag that you call a vinyl bag, like a Ziploc.

やったんだけどそんなジップロック自体がもうないわけ

こっちの人はさ なんかやっぱ 体温高いのかな 筋肉のおかげなのか知らないけど

半袖の人とか 春ズボンの人とか 結構多くて 強いなーって思って

I thought there were quite a few people in short sleeves and spring pants, which was impressive.

なんかさ 授業 授業っていうか 図書館で課題とかして ご飯とかどこで食べてるの?

Like, for classes, I mean, where do you eat after doing assignments at the library?

ご飯は基本自炊かな あ 近くにスーパーとかあるの?

I basically cook for myself. Oh, is there a supermarket nearby?

Yeah, there's a supermarket, but the prices are kind of high.

あーそっか 基本なんでも日本の1.5から2倍ぐらいするから

まあ大きさが大きいから なんかトータルで観察すれば 同じなのかなとか考えたりするけど

Well, since the size is big, I sometimes think that if you observe it as a whole, it might be the same or something.

でもなんか野菜もとにかく高いし 自炊してもそんなに節約にはならないなー みたいな感じ

But somehow vegetables are really expensive, and even when I cook for myself, it doesn’t save that much money.

一緒に行ったの。で、パスタ頼んでて、なんかめっちゃ酸っぱいんだけど、頼んでて

I went together with someone. So, I ordered pasta, and it's really sour, but I ordered it.

でもね、日本食で美味しいとこあったみたいで、行ってたから良かった

そう、ベトナム料理と日本料理と中華行ったの、今まで

Yes, I've tried Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine so far.

全部美味しい。でもなんか日本のめっちゃ美味しいところに比べたらまあ普通だけど

Everything is delicious. But compared to really delicious places in Japan, it's just kind of average.

でも美味しいし、あの、まずくないっていうか、全然

今までのさ、私の海外経験、割と途上国とかだから、なんか、こんなに物価高い世界があるんだ、みたいな

So far in my overseas experiences, I've mostly been to developing countries, so it's like, wow, there's a world where the cost of living is this high.

なんかシンガポールとかも物価高いって言うじゃん、アジアだと

I wonder how it is. It's been so long since I went to Singapore that I have this feeling that if I go there, I might just be able to eat normally, but isn't everyone eating Japanese cuisine?
