I retired and traveled around the world.

こんばんは 定年だ 世界一周しちゃった 第34話です

Good evening, it's retirement. I've traveled around the world. This is Episode 34.

今回は カーニバルのリマから リオからですね

This time it's from the carnival in Lima to Rio.

最後の目的地 ブラジルのサンパウロへ到着いたしました

We have arrived at our final destination, São Paulo, Brazil.

サンパウロはご存知のように 移民の方がたくさんいらっしゃいますね

As you know, there are many immigrants in São Paulo.

日本人町にあるホテル日経というところに 泊まりました

I stayed at a place called Hotel Nikkei in the Japanese town.

このホテル日経というのは 昔からすごい有名だったようなんですけれども

It seems that this Hotel Nikkei has been very famous for a long time.

一時 中国資本に買われそうになったんですね

At one point, it seemed that it was about to be bought by Chinese capital.

だけど日経のOBの方たちが みんなで それはいかんだろうということで

But the former members of Nikkei all agreed that it shouldn't be that way.

再生をしてくれたそうです

I hear that you have played it again.

この町にはたくさんの日本食が売っています

There are many Japanese foods being sold in this town.

それもスーパーで売っているんじゃなくて

That's not sold in supermarkets either.

団子屋さんだとか 何屋さんとか お米屋さんとかですね

It's a dumpling shop, or something like that, or a rice shop, or something like that.

そういう形でものすごくいっぱい売っています

They are selling a tremendous amount in that form.

もちろん味噌 醤油 お米 和菓子までも売っています

Of course, we sell miso, soy sauce, rice, and even Japanese sweets.

そして近年 日経人が減ってきてですね

And in recent years, the number of Nikkei people has been decreasing.

町は中国資本がだいぶ買っているようなんですね

It seems that a considerable amount of the town has been bought by Chinese capital.

接見されているようです

It seems that they are being interviewed.

聞いていると 日本人の紳士の方が話しかけてきました

While I was listening, a gentleman from Japan began to talk to me.

日経2世だそうです

It seems they are a second generation of Nikkei.

このホテルで会合があったそうです

I heard there was a meeting at this hotel.

当地の日本人会のこと それから収容団ブラジルの会長を

The local Japanese community association, and then the president of the Brazilian internment organization.

40年 この方はお勤めになられたそうです

It seems that this person has worked for 40 years.

日本に行って 天皇陛下から勲章をもらったということ

The fact that I went to Japan and received a medal from His Majesty the Emperor.

今は会計のお仕事をされて 息子さんに譲っているということを

You are currently working in accounting and have passed it on to your son.

2時間近く話してくれましたね

You talked for almost two hours, didn’t you?

とっても

Very much

おかげでね すごいいろんな歴史がわかりましたね

Thanks to that, I was able to understand a lot of different history.

そして最後にですね 言われたことに私はドッキリしたんですね

And finally, I was taken aback by what was said.

子供の時からですね

It has been since I was a child.

家ではすごい厳しく

It's really strict at home.

しつけをされたそうです

It seems that they were disciplined.

目の上の人に対するですね 態度

Attitude towards those who are in a higher position than you.

お正月はですね 正座して

During the New Year, you sit formally.

家長に挨拶をするなど

Greet the head of the household, etc.

日本の伝統をたどり込まれたそうです

It seems that you have delved into Japanese tradition.

しかし

However

その後 日本に行ってみるとですね

After that, when I tried going to Japan...

昔の風習はすっかりなくなっていて

Old customs have completely disappeared.

びっくりしたそうですね

It seems you were surprised.

さらにブラジルではですね

Furthermore, in Brazil...

ブラジル人ではなく

Not Brazilian.

日本人として扱われるんですね

So I am treated as a Japanese person, huh?

ところが日本に行くと

However, when I go to Japan...

日本人ではなくて

Not Japanese.

日系人として扱われるんですね

I am treated as a person of Japanese descent, huh?

私たちは一体どこが祖国なのか

Where exactly is our homeland?

何人なのかということを言われていました

I was told about how many people there are.

確かにそうですね

That's true, isn't it?

私も1世に対しては日本人と言いますけど

I also say that I am Japanese towards the first generation.

2世以降は日系人と言いますよね

After the second generation, they are called Nikkei people, right?

先ほどからずっと私も日系人と呼んできました

I have been calling myself a Japanese descendant all along.

だけど考えてみたら

But if I think about it...

アメリカ人はですね

Americans are...

どこへ行ってもアメリカ人ですよね

Wherever you go, there are Americans, right?

イタリアに住んでいようが

Whether you live in Italy or not

その次の子供ができてもアメリカ人と言いますよね

Even if they have another child, they will say they are American, right?

でアメリカ系人とは言わないんですね

So you wouldn't say "American people," right?

だから日本人と日系人を無意識にですね

So, unconsciously, Japanese people and Nikkei people...

差別してるんじゃないかということに

I wonder if it's discrimination.

私は自分自身がドッキリしましたね

I surprised myself, didn't I?

ブラジルから来たですね

You came from Brazil, right?

それこそ日系人と言われるとですね

When you say "Nikkei," it really refers to people of Japanese descent, doesn't it?

言われる方が愛知県や群馬県の大田でですね

It's said that it's in Ota, which is in Aichi Prefecture or Gunma Prefecture.

たくさん働いていらっしゃいます

You are working a lot.

しかし私たちは日本人として接地してないですよね

However, we are not grounded as Japanese people, are we?

日系人だなっていう感じですよね

It feels like you are of Japanese descent.

偉大な日本人として勇気と誇りを持ってですね

As a great Japanese person, I hold courage and pride.

日本から世界にですね

From Japan to the world.

移住してくれた方の子孫なのにですね

Even though they are descendants of those who relocated.

とってもなんか私も含めて扱いがですね

It's just that, including myself, the way I'm treated is...

尊敬の念がないですね

There is no sense of respect.

本当に申し訳ないと思いました

I truly felt sorry.

で泊まっているですね

You're staying over, right?

ちょっと話は飛びますけども

This might be a bit off-topic, but...

日系ホテルはですね

The Japanese hotel is...

湯船がありました

There was a hot spring bath.

それも深い日本式の湯船ですね

That's a deep Japanese-style bathtub, isn't it?

もう何ヶ月ぶりですかね

It's been several months, hasn't it?

この湯船に入るのはね

Getting into this bathtub is...

だから日本に帰る4日ぐらい前だったんですけど

So it was about four days before I returned to Japan.

なんかすごい懐かしくなってですね

It's somehow really nostalgic.

で街にはね

In the city, you know?

鳥居やラーメン屋など

Torii gates and ramen shops, etc.

いっぱい日本文化が溢れていました

There was a lot of Japanese culture overflowing.

で次の日にですね

The next day, you see...

その前の日の2世の方の話を聞いたんですけども

I heard the story of the second generation person from the day before.

私思い出しながらですね

I'm reminiscing, you see.

ここにですね

Here is...

ブラジル日本移民資料館っていうのがあるんですね

There's something called the Brazil-Japan Immigration Museum, isn't there?

とっても詳しくですね

That's very detailed, isn't it?

説明をしていて展示してありました

It was being explained and was on display.

本当にたくさんのですね

That's really a lot.

先人たちが苦労してですね

The ancestors struggled, you see.

この移住をして

After this migration

ブラジルの国の中で

Within the country of Brazil

いろんなことをやってこられたんだな

You must have done a lot of different things.

ということが分かりました

I have understood that.

読みますとね

When I read it, you know...

100万人以上の方がですね

More than one million people are.

日本人が世界中に

Japanese people around the world.

移住していったそうです

It seems they have moved away.

だけど決してね

But never.

日本政府と固い結束があるとは言えないんですね

It cannot be said that there is a strong bond with the Japanese government.

一方イスラエル人はですね

On the other hand, Israelis...

秘密結社とは言わないけど

I won't say it's a secret organization, but...

イスラエル人のネットワークがすごいあって

The Israeli network is really impressive.

もちろん中国人はですね

Of course, Chinese people...

華僑と呼ばれるですね

They are called overseas Chinese.

固い結束を起こっていますよね

You are forming a strong bond, aren't you?

だけど日本もですね

But Japan as well...

この歴史を見直して

Revisiting this history.

世界中にある日本人のネットワークをですね

It's the network of Japanese people around the world.

もっと活かしてですね

Make better use of it.

何かできないかなっていうのをすごい感じました

I felt a strong sense that there might be something I could do.

そういうことを感じながらですね

While feeling such things.

最後ブラジルからニューヨークへ行って

Finally, I went from Brazil to New York.

乗り換えて日本に帰ることになりました

I will transfer and return to Japan.

Transit in America.

街の中に出ないんですけども

I don't go out into the city, though.

一度入国扱いになるんですね

でJF Kennedy空港でのラウンジで

At the lounge at JFK Airport.

帰りのねビジネスクラスだったので

Since it was business class on the way back.

日本の新聞を読みながら

While reading a Japanese newspaper

ビール片手にですね

With a beer in hand, you know.

なぜだかね日本の焼きそばを食べましたね

I don't know why, but I ate Japanese yakisoba.

さてまもなく成田に向けて出発します

Now we will soon be departing for Narita.

世界一周した達成した喜びと

The joy of achieving a journey around the world.

終わってしまうですね

It's coming to an end, isn't it?

悲しい気持ちが複雑に混じった気持ちになりましたね

I felt a complex mix of sadness.

で私は2015年4月1日から始めた世界一周なんですね

So I started my round-the-world trip on April 1, 2015.

おかげで無事に終了いたしました

Thanks to you, it has been successfully completed.

前半は119日

The first half is 119 days.

後半は10月からですから100日

The second half starts in October, so it's 100 days.

よくもこんな長い間ですね

It's been such a long time, hasn't it?

英語をろくに喋られないのに

Even though I can't speak English properly.

一人で行ったもんですね

I went alone, didn't I?

我ながら褒めてあげたからですね

It's because I praised myself.

数えてみたんです

I tried counting.

宿泊泊まりですね

It's an overnight stay, isn't it?

飛行機の中には9泊

9 nights inside the airplane.

バス6泊

Bus 6 nights

このバスといっても

Even though it's called a bus...

アフリカのオーバーランドツアーのね

It's an overland tour in Africa.

56日間

ここに入れてません

I haven't put it in here.

でドミトリーが56泊

So the dormitory is for 56 nights.

ホテル68泊

68 nights at the hotel.

テント野宿半目59泊

59 nights of camping in a tent with one eye half open.

友人宅4泊

Four nights at a friend's house.

船13泊

13 nights on the ship.

他に4泊

Four additional nights.

移動手段としてはですね

As for means of transportation,

飛行機41回

41 flights

長距離バス30回

30 long-distance bus trips

船3回

Three boat rides.

鉄道4回

Railway four times.

訪問した国は28か国になりました

I have visited 28 countries.

とても刺激的な

Very stimulating.

219日間となりました

It has been 219 days.

これからですね

It's from now on, isn't it?

この後にたくさんの途中で会った

I met a lot of people along the way after this.

外国の方が日本に遊びに来られましたので

A foreign visitor has come to Japan for a trip.

一生懸命ご案内してですね

持ってきたような気がするので

I feel like I brought it with me.

今もう4ヶ月ぐらい準備してるんですけども
