今日はとにかく寒い朝はね摂氏7度 マイナス7度以下でした摂氏マイナス7度そうです

Today is just a cold morning, it was 7 degrees Celsius, below minus 7 degrees Celsius. Yes, that's right, minus 7 degrees Celsius.

なのに夜中にねエアコンが調子悪くなっちゃって朝起きたら家の中が北極になってまして 朝5時過ぎに旦那さんを起こして見てもらいました

Even so, the air conditioning started acting up in the middle of the night, and when I woke up in the morning, the house felt like the Arctic. I woke up my husband around 5 a.m. to have him check it out.

今のところ大丈夫ですがもうお願いだから

エアコン壊れないでーっていう感じです今日はね アメリカの中学校の面白いなーって思うところを何点かお話しします

I'm hoping the air conditioner doesn't break today. Now, I'll talk about a few interesting things about middle schools in America.

たくさんあってね長くなってしまったので前編と後編に分けようと思っていて今日は前半 パートを収録しています

There are so many that it has become lengthy, so I plan to divide it into a part one and part two, and today I am recording the first half.

これからお話しするアメリカの中学校っていうのはうちの長女のココナさんが通うインディアナ 州のカーメルという市内の公立の中学校でアメリカの中学校といっても州や市によって大きく違うと思うのでそこをね承知していただいた上で聞いてほしいです

The American middle school I am about to talk about is a public middle school in Carmel, Indiana, where my eldest daughter, Kokona, attends. I think there are significant differences in middle schools across states and cities in the U.S., so I hope you keep that in mind as you listen.

まず基本情報として制服はなし みんな私服で学校に行きますと言ってもドレスコード的な最低限のルールみたいなのは一応あってですね

First of all, as basic information, there is no uniform; everyone goes to school in casual clothes, but there are indeed some minimum rules, like a dress code.

あってないようなものかもしれないけど一応入学前のオリエンテーションではこういう格好は ng だよみたいなの説明がありました

It may not mean much, but there was an explanation during the pre-enrollment orientation that this kind of attire is not allowed.

ほとんど女の子に向けてなんだけどそんなどんな格好がね ng かっていうと両手をまっすぐあの足に沿って下ろした時に

It's mostly directed towards girls, but when it comes to what kind of outfit is a no-go, it's when both hands are straight down along the legs.

手のところより短い丈のスカートあんまり短すぎるスカートってことですよねきっと それがダメとかあとはキャミスウォールのあまりにも紐が細

A skirt that is shorter than the length of my hand is probably too short, right? Also, there's the issue of camisoles with straps that are too thin.

やつこっちではのスパゲッティキャミスウォールみたいな感じで呼びますけどそれも良く ないしお腹金でお洋服とかも ng と一応されています

We call it something like spaghetti camisole over here, but that's not good either, and clothes are also considered a no-go for the stomach.

露出が多いものですねきっと あと峠校の方法も大きく2つあって

It must be quite revealing, and there are also two main methods at the mountain school.

学校のバスか親が送り迎えをするかがほとんどですね 中にはあまりに学校からね近くに住んでいる子はバスのサービスが使えなくてほんと近いですよ

It's mostly either the school bus or parents picking them up. Some kids who live too close to the school can't use the bus service because they really live very close.

ねほんとに自転車で行ったり歩いて学校へ行く子もいます 実際ココナの友達も学校の目の前に住んでてバスが来ないエリアなので自転車で学校に通っています

There are indeed children who go to school by bike or on foot. In fact, Kokona's friend lives right in front of the school and since there are no buses coming to the area, they commute to school by bike.

でもね冬になって今日みたいにね寒すぎたりすると雪が降ってるとか 親が送ってくって言うようでご両親ちょっと大変かもしれないですねそうすると

However, during winter, when it gets too cold like today, if it starts snowing, it might be a bit tough for your parents if they have to drive you to school.

今日なんてねほんと摂氏マイナス7度だしそれはちょっと子供に酷ですよね

Today, it’s really minus 7 degrees Celsius, and that’s a bit harsh for children, isn’t it?

まあいつもはバスだけど今日は車で迎えに行くみたいなそういう臨機応変にフレキシブルなことも毎日可能ですね

Well, normally it's by bus, but today it seems like they can pick me up by car, so it's possible to be flexible and adaptable like that every day.

あと学校の時間なんですけどうちのココさんの場合は朝8時のバスに乗って帰ってくるのは3時50分のバスです

Also, regarding school hours, in Coco's case, she takes the bus at 8 AM and comes back on the bus at 3:50 PM.

日本のように1年何組2年何組みたいなクラス分けが中学校にはなくてですねチーム分けが

In middle school, there isn't class division like in Japan where it's "Class 1 of Year 1, Class 2 of Year 2," but rather team divisions.

採用されていますなのでクラスがないから他人の先生もいないんですよねでチームを取りしきる先生がいます

I am being hired, so there are no classes, and there are no other teachers, right? There is a teacher who oversees the team.

チームっていうのは学年を3つに分けていてもうチームが違えばもう学校では全然合わないぐらいだそうです

It seems that the teams are divided into three grades, and if you're in a different team, you hardly ever interact at school.

お昼ご飯の時間も違えば時間割も全然違うみたいです でもね同じチームの子だからといってもずっと1日一緒に授業を受けれるわけではなくて

It seems that the lunch time and the schedule are completely different. However, even though they are from the same team, it doesn't mean that they can attend classes together all day.

それぞれみんな履修している科目が違います

Everyone is taking different subjects.

子どもたちの時間はバンドオーケストラコーラス音楽一般みたいに4つに分けられててうちのココさんのようにバンドに所属している子はずっと音楽はバンドだし算数もレベルによって違うし来月からは外国語の授業が始まるんですけどフランス語ドイツ語スペイン語履修する科目がみんなそれぞれ違うのでそれぞれ自分の時間になったら自分のクラスに子どもたちが移動していくっていうのが大切なんですよね

Children's time is divided into four categories: band, orchestra, chorus, and general music. For kids like Coco, who are in the band, music is always band-related, and even math varies depending on the level. Starting next month, foreign language classes will begin, and the subjects offered—French, German, and Spanish—are all different. So, it's important that when it's their turn, each child moves to their respective class.

It's that kind of pattern.

日本の大学生みたいな感じですね

It feels like a Japanese university student.

子どもたち一人一人にロッカーが与えられててこのロッカーについてはねちょっと後編でもしゃべろうと思うんですけど

Each child is given a locker, and I think I'll talk a bit about this locker in the second part.

そこに冬だったらそこにジャケットとかバックパックも入れれるようになってて一つの授業が終わるたびにその自分のロッカーに戻って次の授業に必要なテキストとかラップトップも持ってそれぞれまたクラスルームに行くっていうような流れです

If it were winter, you could also put your jacket and backpack there, and after each class, you would return to your locker to get the texts and laptop needed for the next class, and then head back to the classroom.

This is the basic information up to this point.

めっちゃ前置きが長くなってごめんね

I'm sorry for the long preamble.

そしてここから私が日本と大きく違うなーって面白いなーって思ったことなんですけどね

And here is something I found amusing and quite different from Japan.

そうまず時間割りです

First, the schedule.

日本だったら月曜から金曜まで1週間の時間割りが時間割り表みたいになってるじゃないですか

In Japan, the weekly schedule from Monday to Friday looks like a timetable, doesn't it?

月曜日の何時間目はとか

What period do we have on Monday?

まあでもココさんの学校はですねレッドデイブルーデイという時間割りのシステムを採用してるんですね

Well, Coco's school has adopted a schedule system called Red Day and Blue Day.

レッドデイの日はこういう時間割り

On Red Day, the schedule is like this.

ブルーデイの日はこういう時間割り

On Blue Day, the schedule looks like this.

って決まってて

It's been decided.

1日1日交互にレッドブルーレッドブルーというような感じなんです

It feels like alternating between Red and Blue day by day.

具体的に言うと今日はね

To be specific, today...

ブルーデイだから

Because it's a blue day.

明日がレッドデイで

Tomorrow is Red Day.

明後日がブルーデイまた来る

The blue day will come again the day after tomorrow.

そういう感じで1日おきに同じ時間割りということです

It means that the same schedule will be followed every other day.

例えば

For example

ココさんはブルーデイに算数があるので

Coco has math on Blue Day.

今日算数したら明日は算数なくて

If we do math today, we won’t have math tomorrow.

明後日算数があるということですね

So you have math the day after tomorrow, right?

もうブルーデイならブルーデイずっと

If it's going to be a blue day, then let it be a blue day all the way.

その日のうちの時間割りは変わらないですよ

The schedule for that day won't change.

で算数で出される宿題とかあるよね

There are homework assignments given in math, right?

それは今日あるので

It is happening today.

今日持って帰ってきて

Bring it home today.

明日出さなくてよくて

You don't have to submit it tomorrow.

明後日提出しなきゃいけないっていうことです

I have to submit it the day after tomorrow.

1日おきの時間割り

Every other day schedule

っていうのがちょっと面白いなと思って

I thought that was a little interesting.

これ本当学校に寄り切りだと思うんですけどね

I really think this is completely dependent on the school.

しかも基本1コマ90分授業なの

Moreover, the basic class is 90 minutes per session.

長いよね

It's long, isn't it?

バンドとかスペシャルの授業は

Classes like band or special classes.

95分授業って言ってたっけな

I wonder if they said it was a 95-minute class.

2日に1回90分授業だったら

If the classes are every other day for 90 minutes.

1日に1回90分授業だったら

If there was a 90-minute class once a day.

1日に1回90分ずっとトロンボーンやってるわけだから

Since I'm practicing the trombone for 90 minutes once a day.

上手になるよねきっと

You'll definitely get better, right?

あともう一つ

One more thing.

今日は給食

Today is the school lunch.

カフェテリアのシステム

Cafeteria system

これは大きく日本と違うよね

This is really different from Japan, isn't it?

クラスルームという概念ももちろんないので

Since there is of course no concept of a classroom.

これは小学校からだけど

This is from elementary school, but...

カフェテリアでみんなでご飯を食べます

Everyone will eat a meal together in the cafeteria.

メニューは結構選べるメニューで

The menu has quite a few options to choose from.

ちなみに今日のメニューを見てみると

チキンタコス

Pulled pork slider

ハムチーズのサンドイッチ

Ham and cheese sandwich.

メキシカンタコサラダからメインを一つ選んで

Please choose one main dish from the Mexican taco salad.

今日の野菜みたいな感じはスマイリーポテト

It feels like today's vegetables are smiley potatoes.

ニコちゃんのポテトね

It's Nico-chan's potato.

それにフルーツとか自分の好きなものを乗せていくっていう感じです

It's about adding fruits and other things you like on top.

ちなみに明日はピザコーンドッグチキンラップ

By the way, tomorrow is pizza corn dog chicken wrap.

ポップコーンチキンサラダか選ぶ感じです

It feels like choosing between popcorn chicken salad.

ちなみに一食の値段は2.8ドルです

By the way, the price of one meal is 2.8 dollars.

宗教によってね豚肉が食べられない子とかも多いので

There are many children who cannot eat pork due to their religion.

これはポークが入ってますよとか

This contains pork.

メニューにきちんと印がついております

There are proper markings on the menu.

とっても分かりやすいです

It's very easy to understand.

あと魚シーフードが入っているかどうかも

Also, whether seafood is included or not.

同じように印がついております

It has the same mark on it.

そしてこのカフェテリアはね食事だけじゃなくて

And this cafeteria is not just for meals,

中学生になるとジュース類

When you become a junior high school student, juice beverages...

普通にコークプロダクトとかスプライトとか

Regular Coke products or Sprite, etc.

炭酸水とかも売られてるし

They also sell carbonated water.

なんとスナックもあります

There are even snacks!

ポテトチップス系とかプレッツェル

Potato chips and pretzels.

グミとかねmrmみたいなキャンディー系まで売ってます

They sell gummy candies and candy types like mrm as well.

で私はびっくりしたんだけど

I was surprised.

アイスクリームも売ってるんですよね

They also sell ice cream, don't they?

でどんなアイスがあるのってここに聞いたら

"If I ask here what kind of ice cream there is..."

結構種類あるよって言って

There are quite a variety of them, you know.

ココさんもたまに食べてるようです

It seems that Coco also eats it from time to time.

学校の指定のアプリを使って

Use the designated app of the school.

それが紐付けられていて

It's connected to that.

そこにお金を入れておけば

If you put money in there.

そこから毎回引かれていくようなシステムです

It's a system where every time it gets deducted from there.

そのアプリにはいろいろ自分で設定もできるので

You can customize various settings in that app as well.

私は残り10ドルを切ったら

I will be left with less than 10 dollars.

自分宛にメールが来るような設定にしていて

I've set it up so that emails come to me.

あーお金少なくなってきたなと思ったら

Ah, I thought my money was running out.

また入金しておくっていうような感じにしてます

It feels like I'm going to deposit again.

ちなみに小学校も高校もうちのカーメル氏は

By the way, Mr. Carmel has both elementary school and high school.

すべて同じアプリを使っているので

Because we are all using the same app.

次女のアンナさんもこのアプリですしね

My younger daughter Anna is also using this app.

そして学年をまたいでも小学校から中学校に移っても

"And even when moving from elementary school to middle school across grade levels,"

お金はそのままになっているので繰り越せれる感じです

The money has remained the same, so it feels like it can be carried over.

でココがね小学校卒業したときに

So, when I graduated from elementary school,

このアプリもなんか中学校になって

This app somehow feels like middle school now.

こちらでなんか買えるところとかあるのかなぁ

I wonder if there are any places around here where I can buy something.

なんて思ったんですけど

I was thinking, you know...

自動で中学にアップグレードされていたので

It was automatically upgraded to middle school.

特段何もしなかったしなくてよかったです

I didn't do anything special, and it was better that way.

そう

Yes.

そのアプリはね毎日自分の子供が何を買ったのか

That app lets you see what your child bought every day.

細かく見れることができて

I can see it in detail.

だから私今日アイス食べてるわーってこの前わかった

So I realized the other day that I'm eating ice cream today.

わかったんだと思います

I think I understand.

全然いいんですけどね食べてても

It's totally fine, even if I'm eating.

ほんとすべてがシステマチックっていうような感じですね

It really feels like everything is systematic, doesn't it?

今日はちょっとこの辺にしておきますが

まだまだロッカーのこととかIDカードのこととか

Still, there's the matter of the locker and the ID card.

時間割でね一つ特殊な面白い授業があって

There is one interesting and unique class in the timetable.
