This is the first broadcast of the special radio show that piques my interest.

Hello everyone, nice to meet you. My name is Nakamura. I look forward to working with you.

Since this is the first time, I was wondering if we should do self-introductions or something like that.

Nakamura has something that matters to him more than anything else.

I hope to talk about that.

"Maybe you are listening to this."

I think you were curious and clicked on this theme title as well.

Without further ado, I would like to jump into this talk's theme.

I feel that the way back feels shorter than the way there.

Yeah, this is really something that happens all the time, right?

I wonder if it's because it's a road I take for the first time when I go on a trip.

I don't know, but...

Well, I'm going, right? On the way.

For example, from the nearest station to the accommodation hotel at the travel destination.

When walking like this

Well, while looking at a scenery I’m seeing for the first time.

Well, I'll be going while chatting with the person I went with.

When walking from the accommodation to the station on the way back,

It feels like it arrives instantly compared to when it came.

It's not just a moment.

I have a feeling I'll arrive early.

It's easy to fall into the feeling of arriving early.

I think this is something everyone has probably experienced.

Is that what it is?

Maybe it's because the scenery I'm seeing for the first time is fresh and makes time feel like it's passing slowly.

It might be that I'm getting used to it, or at least that's what I think.

Moreover, things that catch my attention like this...

At that time, it feels like it's going by quickly.

I feel fluffy.

I feel like it's fluffy.

If I get tired and fall asleep on the train ride back, I tend to forget.

If you just go with that vague feeling of curiosity, you end up forgetting it.

So this time I researched Nakamura.

So, you have to research it when you're curious about something like this, you know.

It seems that this incredible phenomenon has a name.

Let's go.

Here we go, everyone. This is the place that interests me.

Yes, this phenomenon is said to be a famous topic in the world of science called the return trip effect.

It has an incredibly cool name.

The return trip effect is really cool, isn't it?

It looks like a technique name.

It seems that this phenomenon was studied at a university in the Netherlands in 2011.

It seems that familiarity doesn't matter.

Since this is my first time on this path, I find it refreshing.

We will take the same way home.

It's said that just because you get used to something, it doesn't necessarily mean it feels faster.

In the first experiment, they examined time intervals with 69 participants.

I'm already concerned about this; with 69 people, if we add just one more, it will be a neat 70.

It's already something.

It seems I'm a little curious. It appears to be targeted at 69 people. The first experiment is...

After traveling the same distance by car, all participants felt that the return journey was shorter.

Of course, the travel time has not changed.

Furthermore, very few people remember the state of the streets, and it could not be proven that they have become familiar with the roads.

I see, it’s not about getting used to it, but everyone felt like the way home was quicker.

Next is the second survey.

In this survey, an experiment was conducted with 93 participants who used bicycles to travel back and forth on a certain road.

What is this about 93 people? What is this?

Maybe we should add 2 or 3 more people, or kindly decline some, and keep it at around 90 or 95 people.

What is half-hearted about 93 people, I wonder?

If we could increase it to 100 people or so, the fog would improve even more.

You really tend to worry about strange things, don't you? Yes.

Let's go with that.

An experiment was conducted with 93 participants to cycle back and forth on a certain road.

Some participants took a different route on their way to and from the event.

Even when using a different route on the way home, there was an effect of feeling that the time was shorter.

I see, this result shows that whether the route is the same for going and coming back or familiarity with the road is irrelevant.

I see.

This is quite surprising, isn't it?

Even though I took a different route on the way back, it feels faster.

Hmm, that's true; the conditions are the same.

It's not about whether it's fresh or not.

So, what this conclusion is saying is...

It seems that the reason we feel the journey home is shorter lies in our expectations.

In the third survey, there were 139 participants.

That's enough already.

One more person makes it 100 people.

That's 140 people.

Wow, this is really interesting!

Well then, let's continue.

I showed you a video capturing people moving to their destination by bicycle.

At that time, we asked for a prediction on how long it would take for the rider appearing in the video to return to the original location.

Of course, the distance traveled is the same as the Auroro.

By the way, this survey is...

It was conducted based on the assumption that the predictions for the outbound journey affect the time intervals on the return trip.

In previous surveys, most participants underestimated the time spent on Auro.

It seems that there was a tendency to feel that the time until arrival was長く感じている.

The time that the rider spent on Oro in this survey was 7 minutes.

However, the participants' predictions for the backpack were, in most cases, about 9 minutes.

The result is that everyone spent about 9 minutes on the bag.

I found out that extra time is being calculated for the bag.

I see.

From these things, people tend to underestimate the time it takes to reach their destination.

And the actual time taken becomes longer than the predicted time.

Based on that experience, it takes time to return to the bag.

Overestimate the time it takes to get home.

As a result, they arrived at their destination on the way back earlier than expected.

So I feel that the way back is shorter than the way there.

It seems that's the case.

This makes sense to me.

So, that means you're predicting it, huh?

I see.

This is interesting.

I resolved a little bit of what was bothering me.

Yes, yes, yes.

Similar to the feeling that the way back seems shorter than the way there.

As the years go by

It's often said that time seems to pass more quickly.

Nakamura is not that young either, so I feel it every day.

The theory that as we get older, time seems to pass more quickly.

It seems to be called the Law of Janney.

So what this means is...

It's kind of like that return trip effect from earlier.

The interval of time is

In proportion to the number of years that person has lived so far.

評価される

To be evaluated.

To put it simply,

Depending on how many years you've lived.

It's about judging the length of time, isn't it?

A 10-year-old child and a 40-year-old adult.

Let's say we spent the same year.

Although the physical concept of one year is the same for both adults and children,

How that one year corresponds to a fraction of that person’s life is

Some people might find it easy to understand.

It varies from person to person, doesn't it?

Why is one year for a 10-year-old child...

It's one-tenth of my life over the past ten years.

10% in proportion

On the other hand, for a 40-year-old adult.

Because one year is one-fortieth of my life up to that point.

2.5% in terms of percentage.

Why 10% and 2.5%?

It's four times different.

This ratio's

By ratio.

Feeling long or feeling short.

In other words, if the age difference is four times.

It seems that the sense of the speed of a year is said to be four times different.

This is cruel, isn't it?

This is very cruel.

Well, certainly.

So this is it.

What is the law of Jenae?

Like that return trip effect.

これ

This

The sense of time is

As you go through various experiences,

Well, I'm off to work.

I'm going home to sleep.

It's like going to work, coming home, and then sleeping.

If it becomes a repetition of what I've experienced so far,

It is possible to make predictions, isn't it?

In short, within myself.

この人生

This life

Time of living

Because predictions can be made.

The days feel like they're passing more quickly.

Doing that routine day after day.

A year has passed.

It means that something like December is coming early, right?

When I was a child

Everything is fresh and new.

I found a weird bug.

Wow, what is this toy? It's amazing!

I think everything was probably fresh.

So, that's what it is, right?

Trying things I've never done before.

It was the first time doing a new activity or lesson.

It was someone I was meeting for the first time.

It was precisely a place I was visiting for the first time.

"Stimulations that I have never experienced before."

By continuing to receive

Like a day that felt long, just like when I was a child.

It felt like a year was an incredibly long time.

I wonder if I can regain my senses.

I sometimes think that way.

This isn't going quite well, is it?

When I got home after work.

I don't really think about going out to play.

youtube見て

Watch YouTube.

Watch TV.

Eat potato chips.

Drink cola.

Ah, it’s already this late; I have to sleep. When I wake up, I have to work.

Thinking so, I rub my sleepy eyes and head towards the train.

"Working while being told to be quiet."

Ah, somehow I made it through today. It's time to go home.

Could you please help me with this? I'm going to stay late, so I'll be going home.

Ah, I’m tired. Is it already this time? I have to take a bath. I’ll take a bath and then eat dinner.

I'm just going to watch YouTube and then sleep.

This cycle, many people feel, is the darkness of the fast flow of time.

It means that it existed in a place like this.

I understand, but it doesn't go well.

"Why would it go against the law of cat Jané?"

I can't predict it based on my experiences up until now.

I can't predict based on my experiences so far, which seem to defy even the laws of cat Jané.

I can't predict anything based on my past experiences, which seems to defy even the law of cat Janey.

I thought it might be interesting to try something new.

So, for this first installment, we will discuss the phenomenon of the return trip feeling shorter than the journey to the destination.

I talked about the return trip effect.
