The time is just about 8:05.

To Mr. Toshihisa Yasunobu, the former editor-in-chief of Sankei Shimbun.

I will dive into the news that concerns me and provide an explanation.

You came to the studio.

Good morning, Yasumoto-san.

Thank you in advance.

The theme for this morning is

"The presidents with record-high profits will talk about their struggles with the weak yen."

It's May now, isn't it?

May is when the financial results for companies with a fiscal year ending in March are announced.

Finally, prepare for the shareholders' meeting in June.

It's that kind of season, isn't it?

This year will peak on the 10th as well.

Since the figures for the major companies have nearly all been released,

This morning, I would like to talk about this topic.

To conclude this year's trend...

The total maximum profit of listed companies is

It's the highest update layer for three consecutive years.

わー

Wow!

The economy is doing well, isn't it?

Large companies are making a profit, aren't they?

There are three reasons.

One is that the price increase was successful.

And one more thing is that the coronavirus is over.

The fact that economic activities have resumed and are becoming a tailwind.

And it's the depreciation of the yen, the depreciation of the yen.

Today, what I particularly focused on was the third reason, which is the depreciation of the yen.

That influence, you know.

To make it easier to understand with specific examples.

I think I'll take a look at Toyota Motor's financial results.

はい

Yes

Toyota's March financial results are

The sales amount was 45 trillion yen.

うわー

Wow!

It accounts for more than a third of Japan's national budget.

That's right.

はい

Yes

The profit was 4.9 trillion yen.

Only profit.

It's just profit.

That's an outrageous number, isn't it?

"What contributed to this number is"

Above all, it's about overseas sales.

はい

Yes

Toyota Motor Corporation had approximately worldwide last year.

Around 10 million units.

We are manufacturing about 10 million cars.

その85%

That 85%

8,779,000 units are being manufactured and sold overseas.

It can rise to 85%.

It seems that only about 15% of the cars sold in the country are already available.

So this will be considered a product of this car.

We implemented an average price increase of 15%.

This sold really well.

Because

Currently, electric vehicles are not selling well, particularly in Europe and America.

Hybrid cars are being reexamined, aren't they?

Everyone noticed.

I realized.

The Toyota hybrid is better, right?

It's economical, so in the end, it's cheaper.

For that reason.

This hybrid car

A record high of 3,594,000 units.

Wow, is this the best ever?

It's the highest sales ever, isn't it?

First, this has led to an increase in sales and profits.

The effect of the weak yen was added there, huh?

In the case of Toyota, if the yen weakens by 1 yen...

Profits will increase by 50 billion yen.

Is it really 50 billion yen for just 1 yen?

It's just 1 yen for 50 billion yen, isn't it?

The average exchange rate for the 2023 fiscal year is

It was roughly 145 yen to 1 dollar.

Even so, the yen has depreciated by 10 yen compared to the fiscal year 2023.

This alone increased the operating profit by 685 billion yen.

It's amazing, isn't it?

This year, they are saying it's 155 yen or 160 yen per dollar.

I wonder how much profit we will make this year.

I wonder if it depends on people's financial situations.

It's a point of concern, but...

That’s how much the yen has depreciated.

For Toyota, it's an increase in sales.

So it is increasing profits.

Why does it have to be structured like that?

Let's take a look at that as well.

First, when produced domestically,

The pricing is set in yen, isn’t it?

In the case of exporting this,

Because it will be sold in dollar conversion.

With the yen weak and the dollar strong,

割合は

The ratio is

It seems like there is a sense of depreciation of the yen.

It's quite cheap when sold in dollars, isn't it?

It will feel like that.

This is expected to lead to an increase in exports.

In the first place, there is a certain structure to exports, isn't there?

However, Toyota's main focus right now is

Because it is produced overseas.

This advantage is minimal.

It was big.

Sales of cars produced and sold overseas

This time, I'll change it to yen and send it to the Japanese headquarters.

It will be called holdings, but...

When you send it there

It will become a lot of circles.

It's better to sell in dollars.

"This will lead to an increase in both sales and profits."

This means that it has such a structure.

It sounds like a good story up to this point, but...

Well, then let's go ahead and use this profit as an expense.

Or when trying to invest overseas.

I guess I have to convert it back to dollars again.

In that case, it means the dollar is higher.

Even if you have a lot of yen

It didn't really change much as a dollar.

This time, it will become a disadvantage there.

It will become a disadvantage.

So, what this means is that a weak yen is not necessarily a good thing.

The CEOs in various fields around here are noticing this now.

Whenever there is a financial report announcement, there is always a president's press conference.

When I picked up on that word a bit, I noticed a very interesting trend.

I would like to talk about that today.

First, Chairman Uruma of Mitsubishi Electric.

Here, the maximum final profit is due to the weak yen.

It's increased by 33% compared to the previous year.

You are saying things like this.

The procurement of parts from overseas has increased.

I do not think that the weak yen is good.

That's why it ends up being expensive when you buy it from overseas.

Therefore, they are saying that the depreciation of the yen is not just advantageous.

Then, Vice President Miyabe of Panasonic Holdings.

This person is the representative secretary of the Kansai Economic Federation.

In the Showa era, a weak yen was greatly welcomed.

This 100,000 yen depreciation was very welcome.

In the past ten years, it has not necessarily been a plus.

It's not just about the weak yen, that's the understanding, isn't it?

From the leaders of companies that saw a decline in performance due to the weak yen.

Naturally, there seems to be a hint of resentment towards the weak yen.

President Nakai of Mitsubishi Corporation.

Here, the final profit was minus 18%.

The weak yen hits like a body blow.

When making overseas investments

The acquisition amount has increased, forcing us to be cautious in our investments.

はい

Yes

Then, President Kōzuki of the esthetic salon.

Here, the profit is minus 30%.

We were greatly affected by the yen's depreciation.

We have implemented a price increase, but...

The rise in raw material prices and the impact of exchange rates were greater than expected.

In our case, a decline of 1 yen in the yen's value results in a loss of over 10 million yen in profits.

It's quite tough even with the weak yen.

It seems that there are more and more company presidents saying things like this.

Among these, what I'm particularly interested in is...

Mr. Miyabe's welcome of the yen's depreciation dates back to the Showa era.

I found this kind of discussion非常に interesting.

Let me tell you a little story from the past.

In 1985, during the Showa 60 year, I was a first-year student in the social department.

At that time, there was the Plaza Accord.

The yen has suddenly appreciated significantly.

At that time, what was instructed by my boss was...

Touring the town factories of Higashi-Osaka and Sakai.

"Go and get the executives' statements."

In that case, the yen will strengthen.

The yen has appreciated rapidly.

They say that exports are going to struggle because of the strong yen.

Surely the voices of lament will gather.

You received instructions like this, didn't you?

When you actually go and try it,

It was mostly just voices that sounded like such lamentations or cries.

Rather than collecting anymore,

As soon as I went to listen, the complaints started pouring out.

This is what it is, isn't it?

What I thought at that time was

In Japan, when the yen becomes stronger, exports do not grow.

That won't keep the Japanese economy moving.

I really felt it.

Japan relies on processed trade for its livelihood.

If exports don't grow, the economy itself will be done for.

Such things have permeated even down to the level of small factory owners.

For Japan, a strong yen is suddenly...

It is the depreciation of the yen that is good.

I see, that was the kind of value system you had.

But when I think about it, if I had conducted the interview in a different direction at that time...

There should have been people saying that a strong yen is actually quite good.

For example, imported goods can be bought cheaply.

I hadn't been able to get my hands on it until now.

At that time, there was Johnny Crow and so on.

Things like that have become quite inexpensive to buy.

"You can now buy brand-name products at a low price."

There must have been voices like that as well.

Such phenomena must also be occurring.

The media didn't pay any attention to that at all.

The voices say that the entire Japan benefits from the weak yen, and it's the strong yen that is bad.

It was spreading, wasn't it?

I think that was the Shōwa era.

That voice has finally started to change.

The emergence of voices suggesting that the weak yen might be to blame is significant.

Perspectives on the Japanese economy.

I think it's better to say that it's a Japanese thing.

It has changed quite a bit.

It has become globally recognized.

Either negative or positive as well.

So that both are seen equally.

I feel that the perspective of Japanese people has broadened.

I think this is a very good thing.

Among them, there are also voices like this.

I thought I would introduce this as well.

Keidanren Chairman Tokura

He is the chairman of Sumitomo Chemical.

By strengthening the Japanese economy, we will enhance the value of the yen.

It is desirable to correct the strong yen.

It would be desirable to correct the depreciation of the yen.

This is what you are saying.

Then, Mr. Morita, the president of NEC

Such a depreciation of the yen is undesirable as it puts customers and Japan's national strength in danger.

It's an abnormal situation.

Therefore, what I want to highlight here is

It is better to strengthen the economy and raise the value of the yen, leading to a stronger yen.

It's better to have a strong yen.

This kind of thought has come up, hasn't it?

What I want to draw attention to here is

The value of currency being low or high means that

It indicates the economic situation of that country.

If the economy is strong, the currency will appreciate.

The idea that it is only natural.

This kind of thing is coming up.

I feel that Japan has grown quite a bit.

Since such things have come up this time.

Since the beginning of the Reiwa era, Japan has...

I think this could be quite promising from now on.

If the company presidents could become aware of that.

Policies of the country moving forward.

You can manipulate it to favor a stronger yen, right?

When the yen strengthens, it means that overseas goods can be bought more cheaply.

In terms of our daily lives.

It will become much easier.

It's easy to travel abroad.

And then it is said that the rising prices will also calm down.

From the perspective of a living person.

This means that this is a very good thing.

Until now, I have only considered the perspective of the producers.

Let's drive the Japanese economy.

I was trying to pull (it).

The voice of the people living their lives is absolutely necessary.

I think it didn't reach.

From now on, I have reflected those voices.

I think it will become a country that is easier to adopt policies.

I feel that way.

I have two suggestions I would like to propose today.

Let's also stop using the expressions of yen depreciation and appreciation.

The yen is strong.

The yen is weak.

In this way, a stronger yen means that the yen is strong.

When it is said that the yen is strong,

I think Japan is strong.

Isn't it something positive?

That's certainly true.

The value of the yen is high.

It's about whether something is expensive or cheap.

I don't really know which one is better, do I?

If things are expensive, I guess it's better to go for the cheaper option.

So it will be.

When it comes to talking about being strong or weak, after all,

It's obvious at a glance.

It's better to be stronger than weaker, right?

This way of thinking emerges.

From that expression.

I think it would be good to change it from the media.

That's for sure.

Even if they say it's a strong yen or a weak yen...

It's hard to tell which one is higher.

I don't know which is better.

If it's a choice between strong and weak, then it’s obviously better to be strong.

I would like to make this kind of notation.

Actually, they say that abroad.

Are you saying that?

The dollar is high.

It's called a strong dollar, isn't it?

The dollar says that you are strong.

Therefore, that.

You should have just translated it as it is.

I translated it to all over Japan.

It became expensive.

This is the Japanese people's consciousness.

I feel like I’ve been tied up quite a bit.

Therefore, the expression here...

I think it would be good to change one thing.

And one more thing I would like to propose today is...

You're saying something like an old Showa-era dad.

There are politicians from overseas.

What does that mean?

Mr. Trump

Hahaha

Mr. Trump

It's because it's Twitter of the past and present.

Among the information being transmitted on X.

What has recently been in the news is

It seems that you are very angry about the strong dollar.

You're angry about the strong dollar and weak yen, aren't you?

If we leave such a high dollar rate unattended,

When American manufacturing goes bad,

suffer catastrophic damage

This is the way I am saying it.

You're saying the same thing as in Showa-era Japan, aren't you?

Therefore, in Trump's mind...

I want to strengthen American manufacturing.

To become stronger.

A situation where products are selling more and more overseas is what we aspire to.

That's why a weaker dollar is better.

A strong dollar is not good.

This is what that way of thinking is like.

When I read that Twitter X

Ah, they're just like the managers from the Showa era.

Hah.

それが

That is it.

That person will become Moshi Tora from now on.

You might become the president.

となると

That being the case,

Politics of a weak dollar policy

I think they will adopt a policy.

Confronting someone like Trump.

From now on, we have to have a government in Japan, right?

There is a presidential election in the United States in November.

Starting next year, President Trump might...

It may be a representative of the United States.

Who will be the negotiator with that person?

This may require a bit of deeper research.

I wonder who the Prime Minister of Japan is at that time.

I think we need to consider that a little bit.

Well, before it was Abe-san.

Somehow, while soothing Mr. Trump...

They controlled it for me, though.

Next time, such a person.

I wonder if they are in the Liberal Democratic Party, the Democratic Party, or the Constitutional Democratic Party.

I feel that way, don't you?

This perspective should definitely be considered for autumn.

I hope you always keep it in your mind.

The current state of the yen depreciation is...

I wonder how long this will continue.

Well, generally speaking, it is said that...

Unless America lowers its interest rates.

It's expensive, so everyone is buying dollars, right?

It is said that this is the biggest reason.

Well, until the Federal Reserve Board decides to lower interest rates.

The pressure of the weak yen continues to persist.

We must win in the economy among those.

I think that situation will continue.

While somehow maximizing the benefits of this weak yen.

While taking measures.

It might be a difficult situation, right?

So, you see.

"This will also become research impossible, but..."

"When I look at politics now"

Always political reform, political reform.

That's what I'm saying.

What is truly important is

Such steering of the economy and so on.

Diplomatic security and so on.

Whether or not they are someone who can do that properly.

Next, I think it would be better if there was also an affair.

I think so.

Always talking about infidelity.

When incompetent people take on such roles...

I think it will indeed become a serious matter.

In the pure flow of Shirakawa

There was something like that, but...

I am thinking.

Well, what's going to happen to the president next?

And the movements of the FRB.

It means that we must stop.
