ビームスボーイの dna をテーマに株式会社ビームスエグゼクティブクリエイティブディレクターでビームスボーイを立ち上げた

久保博さんとともにお話をしてまいりますということで久保さん後編もよろしくお願いします

Thank you very much. Now that we've completed the first half, how did you find the discussion during that part?

いやあの久々自分で振り返ってみていろいろあったんだなでも楽しかったっていうふうにはい思いました

Well, I hadn't reflected on it in a while, but looking back, there were various things that happened. However, I thought it was fun.

本当にいろんなことがありすぎてあそういえばこういうこともあったなとおしゃべりしている途中に思い出すっていうこともありますよね

There are so many things that happen, and sometimes while we're chatting, I remember things like, "Oh, by the way, this also happened."

本当そうでしたありがたい時間です

アルバイト時代から合わせるとどれぐらい

How long has it been since the part-time job days?

約40年ぐらいですね

About 40 years or so.

40年いらっしゃればもう忘れてしまったことも

If you've been here for 40 years, there are things you may have already forgotten.

ほぼ忘れてます

I almost forgot.

そうですよね

That's right.

それぐらいこう長い歴史を体感していらっしゃるということなので今回も貴重なお話が伺えればと思います

さあ前回はですねビームスボーイのブランドの立ち上げやオリジナル商品の独自性に焦点を当てながらお話をしてきました

Well, last time we talked about the launch of the BEAMS BOY brand and focused on the uniqueness of its original products.

後半の今回は今なお受け継がれるブランドのDNAについてお話を伺っていきます

In the second half, we will be discussing the DNA of the brand that is still being carried on today.

ビームスボーイの世界観に対するイメージの確立において

In establishing the image of the BEAMS BOY worldview.

テンポがどんな役割を果たしたかというところに触れましたが

I touched on the role that tempo played.

ブランドイメージの確立への取り組みとしては他にもカタログの果たした役割が大きかったというふうに伺っています

I have heard that the role played by the catalog was also significant in the efforts to establish the brand image.

今だとSNSとかいろんなメディア媒体とかがありますけども

当時ビームスボーイの世界観を表現する媒体としてなぜカタログが重視されたのかお話いただけますか

Could you talk about why catalogs were emphasized as a medium to express the worldview of Beams Boy at that time?

はいこれ本当にありがたいことで

Yes, this is truly something I'm grateful for.

実は僕商品企画デザインとかビームスボーイの周りの仕入れをやってたまでで

Actually, I was involved in product planning and design, as well as purchasing around Beams Boy.

それ以外のそういう世界観を表現する媒体作りカタログとか

A catalog for creating media that expresses other types of worldviews.

そういったものを作ってくださったのはPRの担当者が全部やってくれてました

The person in charge of PR took care of making all of those things.

なので僕は確認の仕事ぐらいでそこまでの企画とかそういうものには実は触れておりませんでした

So I actually haven't been involved in planning or anything like that, just the work of confirmation.

じゃあカタログこんな風に仕上がったよっていう事後報告を

Well, this is a follow-up report on how the catalog has turned out.

はい

Yes

皆さん受けていったような感じですか

Did everyone feel like they received it well?

そうですねコーディネートに対してもそのカタログに携わっているスタイリストさんとかもいらしたので

That's right, there were stylists involved in that catalog when it came to the coordination.

そこまで僕はいろいろ意見はできない立場ですし

I am not in a position to provide various opinions up to that point.

ふんふんいいものになってるなっていう

"Hmm, it's becoming a good thing."

これに乗っかってまたいろいろやっていこうっていうことしかなかったですね

There was nothing else but to ride on this and try various things.

商品企画を中心になさっていて

Focusing on product planning.

そういったものを作っていったクラブさんにとって

For a club that created such things.

なんでこの時にビームスボーイは雑誌いろんなものもあったでしょうけど

I wonder why Beams Boy had various things in magazines at that time.

カタログを力を入れていたと思いますか

Do you think you put a lot of effort into the catalog?

おそらくビームスの中でも独自性のアイテムがあったりとか

There might be unique items among the selections at Beams.

多分そういう良い意味でヒットものが割とあったので

Perhaps there were relatively many hits in that good sense.

それをビームスのプレスのスタッフが

The press staff of Beams did that.

より個別のブログを作っていったりとかそういうのがあったりとか

Creating more individualized blogs or something like that.

ブランドとして何か集約してアウトプットしようという風に

"Let's try to consolidate something as a brand and output it."

思ってくださったと思ってます

I think you thought of me.

なんかこの起用したモデルも読書モデルを起用したり

It seems that this model we hired also uses a reading model.

ちょっとお手作り感があったということでね

It had a bit of a homemade feel to it.

そうですね

That's right.

そのカタログに関しては僕もすごく覚えてますし

I really remember that catalog well too.

今のボス社長の娘さんとかも出てたりとか

The daughter of the current boss or president is also appearing, among other things.

近所のカフェの仲良しの

A close friend from the nearby café.

人が出てたりとか

People are coming out and such.

本当に手作りもDIY感がある

It really has a handmade and DIY feel to it.

いや本当にそれは逆に洋服の世界観も

なんて言うんでしょうリアルな感じで

How should I say it to make it sound realistic?

何度かカタログ制作を経ていて

After going through the production of several catalogs...

最初は1999年に当時デビューしたてだったモデル

At first, it was a model who had just debuted in 1999.

ジェシカさんの起用があって

With the appointment of Jessica.

ここからイメージがどんどんカタログで

From here, images keep appearing in the catalog.

しっかりと出てきて

表現ができていて

Able to express.

なんと2作目のカタログでは

In the second catalog, remarkably,

ちょっと予算が少なかったから

The budget was a bit small.

手作りの感じになっていったっていう

It turned out to have a handmade feel.

裏話があるとお聞きしました

I heard there is an inside story.

僕も後から聞きましたけれども

I heard about it later as well.

その1作目2作目ですか

Is that the first or second work?

結構海外ロケも含めて

Including quite a bit of overseas filming.

モデルさんのアサインのものも含めて

Including those assigned to the models.

結構経費が増えてきて

The expenses have been increasing quite a bit.

膨らんだという話からの

From the story about it being inflated.

こういう手作り感のある

This has a handmade feel to it.

結果良かったということですけど

It means that the results were good.

こういう結果になったんでしょうね

I guess that's how it ended up.

結構ギャップが激しかったのかなって思うんですけど

I think there was quite a significant gap.

久保さんも出来上がったのを見て

あれなんかちょっと1作目とイメージ違うけど

That looks a bit different from the first one, though.

まずは紙質が違いました

First of all, the paper quality was different.

結構びっくりするぐらい

Surprisingly enough.

リアルなところが

The realistic aspects.

Yes

でもちょっと

But just a little.

でも2作目のその手作り感もね

But that handmade feeling in the second one too.

なんかすごい等身大の女性を表す

It somehow represents a remarkable life-sized woman.

そうですね

That's right.

みたいなところで

In places like that

それが逆に良かった

That ended up being a good thing instead.

結果良かったんでしょうね

It seems the results were good, right?

なんかリアルに感じられたんでしょうかね

I wonder if it felt real somehow.

手に取る皆さんも

海外とかっていうスケールが大きいものよりも

Rather than something on a large scale like overseas,

独自カテゴリーを確立させることとなりました

We have established a unique category.

この時ね

わずか1年で急上昇って

久保さんの中では

来てるぞ来てるぞっていう感覚は

意外と中にいるとないものですか

僕はあんまり実を言うとそんななかったですね

この豊田さんとの出会いは

1998年ビームスボーイを立ち上げた時に

出張に行きまして

I went on a business trip.

もちろん僕もVMDチームと同じように

サンディエゴのASRのショーから

ずっとPCH自分で運転して

北上していくわけですね

その時にハンティントンビーチに行きまして

あの辺はサーフショップもたくさんありますし

パームグラフィックスの展覧会をやってたんですね

でそこで初めてパームグラフィックスという

And that was the first time I heard about Palm Graphics.

の作品展だったんですけど

と思ってこう話していて

本当に浸透したなっていう思いはありました

サンデーゴで行われてる展示会で知り合ったんですけど

I met them at the exhibition being held in San Diego.

もちろん日本にも代理店があって

仕入れをしてたんですが

I was doing some purchasing.

ポールフランクさんビームスボーイを一回

1号店のビームスボーイ渋谷店に来た時に

その世界観に感激されて

来日するたびに渋谷にホテルを取られて

2000年にはムック本MCシスターを刊行し

銀座のタイアップではビームスボーイポートレートをスタートさせます

The collaboration in Ginza will launch the Beams Boy Portrait.

さらに2005年にはビームス初の海外出展として

香港に3店舗をオープンさせます

メンズの服をレディースに落とし込むという手法が

The technique of adapting men's clothing into women's.

まだ本当にそんなに広まっていってなかったこともあり

It hadn't really spread that much yet.

メディアが注目していただいてたこともあったんですけれども

There were times when the media was paying attention to us.

海外に広がっていったきっかけは

What was the trigger for its expansion overseas?

やはり前回にお話したモノグラムの商品が広がって

As expected, the monogram products we discussed last time are expanding.

特に香港ですごくブームになってたということがありました

Especially, there was a huge boom in Hong Kong.

そこから今でもパートナーの大きい一つの会社である

香港のITさんというところからオファーをいただいて

I received an offer from a place called IT in Hong Kong.

出展に至ったんですけど

それまでは香港のローカルの人たちが

我々の店舗に買いに来てくださって

大量に一つのアイテムを

A large quantity of a single item.

この店舗にある在庫全部くださいとか

明日までにいくつ揃いますかみたいな世界で

In a world where we ask how many will be gathered by tomorrow.

大量買いして

Buy in bulk.

要はハンドキャリーで

In short, it's by hand carry.

香港のいろんなマーケットで売られてたんですね

They were sold in various markets in Hong Kong.

実際に僕も

ニットを作りに香港に行ったりとか
