現地校でフォースからエイスなんです

I'm in a local school, and I've gone from a Force to an Ace.

なのでハイスクール前

エイスの卒業までいたので

ミドルはやっていて

I'm doing middle.

ハイスクールはアメリカではやってない

うちの子供たちは息子が

4thグレードの途中で転入して

Transferred in during the 4th grade.

今7thグレードをちょうど終えて夏休み

I just finished 7th grade and I'm on summer break now.

これから8thグレードになるというところで

I am about to enter 8th grade.

娘は6thグレードの途中で転入して

My daughter transferred in the middle of 6th grade.

ハイスクールの最初の年

The first year of high school.

9thグレードの途中で日本に帰国して

Returned to Japan in the middle of 9th grade.

今は日本の高校に通っている

高校1年生なんですね

なじみやすさっていうのは

すっごく差がある

なのでつまずく子はね

でもそれは彼らのせいじゃない

嫌味を言ってきたと相談すると

英語が喋れないあんたが悪いよと言われました

I was told that it's my fault for not being able to speak English.

学校は一度だけ休みたいと言ってみましたが

私実家が学習塾やってたので

結構作文の添削とかもしてきたんだけど

A child who can write this much at this age.

ちゃんと読み手の立場に立って

Properly stand in the reader's position.

そんなことないよ

大人でもちょっとここまで書けない人

まさに日本語教者の英語下手っていう

That's exactly what you would call an English speaker who teaches Japanese poorly.

一つのパターンとも言えるかもしれない

It may be said to be one pattern.

日本語の能力が高い子ほど

The children with higher Japanese language skills.

英語については

Regarding English

日本語につまずきがち

I tend to stumble over Japanese.

なぜなら彼らには高い言語センスがあって

Because they have a high sense of language.

間違えながら話をするっていうことに

Involving talking while making mistakes.

強い抵抗を感じちゃうっていう

I feel a strong resistance.

これすっごいわかるのね

I really understand this.

うち息子はねかなりたっしゃに英語

My son is quite good at English.

英会話をしているなって思うんだけど

I think we're having a conversation in English.

まあ人の話聞いてないよね

Well, you’re not really listening to what people are saying, are you?

人の話聞いてないし

男子同士の会話なんて

Conversations between boys are just...

お互い人の話聞いてないし

すごいなんかもう文法とかそっちのけで

Wow, it's like I completely forgot about grammar and all that.

まあとりあえずノリでね話してるのが半分みたいな

Well, it's like we're just talking on a whim, half of the time.

あと年齢もやっぱりあると思うんだよね

I think age is also a factor.

そのやっぱダイリンガルっていうのって

So, that "bilingual" thing...

そのうちの子とかまだ上は7歳とかで小さくてさ

One of those kids is still only 7 years old and quite small.

しかもまだ3歳なので

Moreover, they are only 3 years old.

やっぱ日本語を

I knew it, Japanese language.

僕を第一言語をしっかりやると

If I focus on my first language properly,

第二言語がより伸びるっていうのが

The idea that a second language can develop further.

ダイリンガル育児であるんだけれども

It's bilingual parenting, but...

やっぱりそれって年齢が小さい時だけなんだよね

I guess that's something that only happens when you're younger.

やっぱり10歳とかを過ぎてしまうと

Once you pass the age of 10, after all...

要するに中学生ぐらいになってくると

In short, when you reach around middle school age...

その6語目っていうよりは

Rather than that sixth word

外国語としての学習っていう風になってくるので

It's going to become more like learning it as a foreign language.

その1言語目のその強さが逆に障壁になる

The strength of that first language, conversely, becomes a barrier.

日本語はこんなにできるし

I can do Japanese this well.

自分の気持ちもこんなにちゃんと言えるのに

I can express my feelings so clearly like this.

英語ではできないっていうのが

I can't do it in English.

余計傷つく自分が

I'm hurting even more.

高学年きついと思う

I think the upper grades are tough.

うち息子は小さい頃かなり言語の遅れがあって

My son had quite a language delay when he was small.

でも見てると考えることはしっかりしてるなっていう

But when I watch, I can see that you think thoroughly.

だからまあいろんなところで

So, well, in various places...

いろんな指摘をされてはきたけれども

I've received various points of feedback, but...

親から見て知的なものを見ると

When viewed from a parent's perspective, seeing something intellectual...

そんな問題はなさそうだな

It doesn't seem like there will be any problems.

まあIQテストとかするとね

Well, when you take an IQ test, you know...

もうほんとやばい数字出してたけど

It's really bad numbers that have come out, but...

そのくらい言葉はできなかったのね

今の年になって

言葉でいろいろ話を聞けるようになって

Having become able to hear various stories through words,

分かったのは

イメージで考えるっていう風に言ってて

だからやっぱりその

日本語がしっかりしてる子ほど

まず日本語でしっかりロジックに考えるし

First, I think logically in Japanese.

そうすると英語を聞いた時に

Then, when I hear English...

段階踏んじゃうよね

You're going to take it step by step, right?

英語聞きます

I will listen to English.

日本語に直します

I will translate it into Japanese.

日本語で考えます

I will think in Japanese.

それを英語に直します

I will translate that into English.

でもこの英語に直しますっていう時に

But when it comes to correcting this to English...

この日本語での思考レベルが高いから

Because the level of thinking in this Japanese is high.

それに追いつく英語レベルには

To catch up to that level of English.

そうそう到達できないんだと思う

I think it's something that can't be reached after all.

いやそりゃそうよね

まだこの子はまだ4ヶ月

This child is still only 4 months old.

とりあえず4ヶ月だから

For now, it's just for four months.

やっとなんとなく生活慣れてきたぐらい

で特にミドルからの現地校スタートってね

Starting at a local school, especially from middle school, you know?

課題が多い

There are many challenges.

そして現地校の英語の難易度がすっげえ高い

And the difficulty of English at the local school is really high.

うちの娘が最初にミドルでもらった課題とか

The assignment that my daughter received first in middle school, for example.

一緒にできると思ってたの私も

I thought we could do it together too.

そこそこね英語好きで勉強もちょこちょこしてきたから

I somewhat like English and have been studying it here and there.

できると思って

I think I can do it.

もらった課題見てみてうわわかんないと思ったよね

I looked at the assignment I received and thought, "Wow, I don't understand it at all."

アメリカの議会制度についてっていうさ

It's about the American congressional system.

内閣とか議員とかセネートだコングレスだっていう

Things like the cabinet, lawmakers, the Senate, and Congress.

あれにまず親がねガーンってなったし

First, the parents were really shocked by that.

で子供はさ授業中にさ単語一個一個調べながらなんて

Well, during class, kids are looking up each individual word one by one, you know.

授業追いつけないじゃん

I can't keep up with the classes.

うんうんうん

Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh.

でその後もらったテキストとかを全部翻訳サイトにコピー&ペーストして

And then I copied and pasted all the texts I received into a translation site.

で日本語に直して日本語で理解していくっていう風にどうしてもなっちゃうんだよね

So I end up inevitably translating it into Japanese and understanding it in Japanese.

だってそうしないとさ課題出せないんだもん

Because if I don't do that, I won't be able to submit my assignment.

そうだよね

That's right.

うんだから本当はね最初は課題を減らしてもらってもいいんだと思うけどね

Well, I actually think it's okay to reduce the tasks at first.

ミドルからのスタートっていうのはかなり本位の負担が高いし

Starting from the middle puts a considerable burden on one's true intentions.

Yeah.

そうそう簡単に現地校の流れに乗れるものではないんだっていうのをね

It's not so easy to get into the flow of the local school's system.

親もちょっと認識しといてあげていいと思うんだよね

I think it's good to let the parents be aware of it a little.

そうだねただ言葉だけの問題じゃないんだよねやっぱりね

That's right, it's not just a matter of words, after all.

コミュニケーションの壁もあるよね

英語を話さなきゃいけない

話さなきゃいけないんだけどさ本位はね6thグレードだったから12歳のつもりでも出てくる英語がやっぱりエレメンタリーレベル低学年レベルの英語しか話せないじゃん

I have to talk about this, but since I was in 6th grade, I can only speak English at an elementary school level, even though I feel like I’m 12 years old.

そのことに本位すっごい恥を感じたんだって

They said they felt a huge sense of shame about that.

言いたいことのさ3分の1も言えない最初の頃なんかもう10分の1も言えないじゃん

In the beginning, I couldn't even say one-tenth of what I wanted to say, let alone one-third.

でもねそのとりあえず頑張ってる自分を認めてあげて他人の目を気にしないっていうのは難しいのかなって言ったら

But you know, when I said that it might be difficult to acknowledge the part of myself that’s trying hard for now and not worry about what others think,

あの私たちは中二病ですからって

Well, because we have a case of "chuunibyou."

中二病の最中に他人の目を気にしないとかそれはね無理な話ですって言われて

Being told that it's impossible to not care about other people's opinions while in the midst of a "chuunibyou" phase.

うんうん思っともだね

Yeah, I think so too.

そういう年頃だったよね

It was that kind of age, wasn't it?

そういう年頃だった確かにそういう年頃だったしやっぱりそうやってなんか周りの目を気にして日本で育てられてきてるからなんか身に染み付いちゃってるところもあるじゃん

It was certainly that kind of age, and I guess growing up in Japan while being concerned about people's opinions has ingrained that into me to some extent.

あー確かにね

同調圧力とかね

Things like peer pressure.

うんその恥ずかしいからやめなさいとかさ別にそれは言葉に限らずだけどやっぱりちょっとね周りの目はさみんなマスクしてるんだからマスクしなさいみたいな

Yeah, it's a bit embarrassing, so stop it. It's not just about words, but still, you know, the way people around you are all wearing masks, you should wear one too, right?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

そういうのもあるよねー

ねほちゃんの娘さんの英語側を口から話せるけど話さないっていうのもねすごくわかるんですよねだからこのメッセージくれた方はまだ4ヶ月なので話せるけど話さないっていう段階にはまだ来てないとは思うんだけれども

I understand that it's really common for Neho-chan's daughter to be able to speak English but not actually do so. However, since the person who sent this message is only 4 months old, I don't think they have reached the stage of being able to speak but choosing not to.

うんこれからおいおい勉強していって話せる状況話せるだけど

自分がじゃあ学校に行ってその自分で話せるかって言ったらまたそれは違う問題というか

If I were to go to school and asked if I could speak there, that would be a different issue altogether.

またワンステップ大きいハードルがあったりもするっていうのはとてもわかるし

I understand that there can be an even bigger hurdle to overcome as well.

私は多分りほちゃんの娘さんと同じいた感じだったなって自分は思っていて

うんうんアメリカ人と友達にはなれなかった私は逆に日本人が結構多い場所にいたのでそれでも済んじゃって

Yeah, I couldn't become friends with Americans, so instead, I was in a place with quite a few Japanese people, and that worked out fine.

でなんかまあ諦めちゃったところはあるんだよねもう普通にこの日本人社会で生きていこうみたいな感じで

Well, I guess I've kind of given up on it and decided to just live normally in this Japanese society.

うんですごいこのさっき言ってた優しくしてくれる子はいるけれども友達って思えないけどね

Yeah, there is this nice girl I mentioned earlier, but I can't really think of her as a friend.

でも優しくしてくれる子はいるんだよねやっぱり

But there are kids who are kind to me, after all.

私でもねでもね一人それでね私のお隣になって一人いたのたまにすごい優しくしてくれる子っていう子がいたんだけど
