Shūgorō Yamamoto - Autumn's Cage

ウオキンの店は北八丁堀の樫にあった。

The Wokin shop was located in Kashi in Kitahatchobori.

二丁目と向き合った角で、

At the corner facing Nichōme,

東と南の丁目と向き合った角で、

At the corner facing the districts of east and south,

丁目と南の丁目の両方から出入りができた。

You could enter and exit from both the block and the southern block.

ウオキンは一膳飯と居酒を兼ねた縄の連であるが、

Wokin is a rope connection that serves both as a single meal and an izakaya.

造作もちょっと気取っているし、

The design is a bit pretentious, and...

いつも掃除が行き届いていて、

The cleaning is always thorough,

さっぱりとした洒落た感じの店であった。

It was a classy shop with a refreshing atmosphere.

板場の方は主人の金助が受け持ち、

The kitchen is managed by my master, Kinsuke.

店は娘の尾梅が二人の子女を使ってやっていた。

The store was run by my daughter Oume, who employed two children.

金助は四十五であった。

Kanasuke was forty-five years old.

彼は元深川で魚屋をしていたが、

He used to run a fish shop in Fukagawa, but...

尾梅が八つになった時にお坊に死なれ、

When Oume was eight years old, the priest passed away,

間もなくこっちへ移ってきてこの商売を始めた。

I soon moved here and started this business.

がっちりと骨太に肥えた赤ら顔の不愛想な、

A stout and burly figure with a ruddy face and a glum demeanor.

そしてひどく口の重い男であるが、

And he is a man of few words, but,

気の良い情に脆い性分であった。

He had a kind-hearted yet fragile temperament.

俺は儲けるのは二の次だ、

Making a profit comes second to me.

と金助は言っていた。

Tonosuke said.

メシ屋などへ来る客は独身の者が多い。

Many of the customers who come to eateries are single individuals.

だから家庭的なものに飢えている。

So I am hungry for something homely.

うまいに越したことはないが、

It's better to be good, but...

親身な家庭的なものが食べたいだろうし、

You probably want to eat something heartfelt and homey.

家庭的な気分が欲しいものだ。

I want a homely feeling.

この魚金はそういう店にするんだ。

This fish shop will be that kind of place.

誰でも考えることかもしれない。

It may be something anyone can think about.

が、金助はそれを実行し、

However, Kinsuke carried it out,

その気構えを言った。

I expressed that mindset.

いつまでも忘れなかった。

I never forgot.

娘も父親によく似た性分であるが、

Although the daughter has a temperament very similar to her father's,

八つの年から片親で、

Since I was eight years old, I have been raised by a single parent.

おまけにこういう商売柄、

Given the nature of this business,

女の子だけに早くからませていた。

I was getting tangled up with just the girls early on.

顔立ちも体つきもキリッとしていた。

Her features and physique were both striking.

背丈は五尺そこそこで、

まず小さい方であるが、

胸や腰のあたりにまだ硬そうでいながら、

Despite still looking stiff around the chest and waist,

十八という年の柔軟さと、

The flexibility of the age of eighteen,

におやかな色気があふれていた。

It was overflowing with a fragrant sensuality.

色の白いきめのこまやかな肌で、

With fair skin that has a fine texture,

おもながの顔に目が大きく、

With an elongated face and big eyes,

眉毛がやや尻さがりであった。

The eyebrows were slightly drooping.

左の唇の下にほくろがあって、

There is a mole under my left lip, and

客に向かってそれを教えながら、

While teaching that to the customer,

これ、食いたしんぼのほくろよ。

This is a mole that loves to eat.

あたしをお嫁にする人は、

The person who will marry me is,

あたしに食わせることで追われるんだ。

I'm being chased by being fed by you.

追われるんですって。

They say they are being chased.

気の毒みたいだわ。

It seems tragic.

というのが口癖であった。

That was their catchphrase.

店の土間には五人ずつ並べる半台が四つ。

In the shop's earthen floor, there are four half-tables that can be arranged with five people each.

座って飲むための四畳半の小座敷が一つあった。

There was a small sitting room of four-and-a-half tatami mats for sitting and drinking.

二方の壁には品書きなどはなく、

There are no menus or anything on the two walls,

片方に桜井周山の山水、

On one side, there is the landscape of Sakurai Shuzan.

片方に諸信の肉筆の風俗画がかけてある。

On one side, there is a hand-painted genre painting by Moroshin.

周山はそのころ流行の画家であり、

Shuzan was a trendy painter at that time,

諸信の肉筆は欲語の美人で、

The handwritten character of Moronobu is a beautiful woman of desire.

無論どちらもさして高価な品ではないが、

Of course, neither of them are particularly expensive items, but...

そんな店には似合わない飾りつけであった。

It was a decoration that did not suit such a store.

二人の子女、お染とお嫁は同い年の十五であった。

The two daughters, Osome and Oyome, were both fifteen years old.

お染の方が器量がよかった。

Ozome had better looks.

お洋のは本当の名は執洋のというのであるが、

The true name of the ocean is said to be "Shuyou."

それを嫌って自分から絲と呼ぶことに決めた。

I hated that and decided to call myself Ito.

つまりその方が上品に聞こえるという訳で、

In other words, it sounds more elegant that way.

当人自身も、

客たちは大暴風と言っていたが、

The guests were saying it was a great storm, but,

常に出来るだけ上品に振る舞おうと努めていた。

I always tried to behave as elegantly as possible.

ウオキンは朝五時から夜半、

Wokin is open from five in the morning until midnight.

朝5時から夜10時まで店を開けていた。

The store was open from 5 AM to 10 PM.

もっとも客の立て込むのは食事時と酔いから後のことで、

The busiest times for customers are during meal times and after they've had a drink.

そのほかは暇だから子女たちは随時に体を休めることができた。

Aside from that, the children were able to rest their bodies at any time because they were free.

おうめもちゃんと身じまいをするのは夕方からで、

Oume also properly tidies up in the evening.

それまでは髪もなでつけたままだし、

Until then, my hair is still slicked back, and...

わざと作らないみなりで客の給仕をした。

They served the customers in a deliberately unkempt manner.

それは食事だけの客には飾らないのが本当だと金助が主張するからであった。

This is because Kanesuke argues that it is true not to decorate for guests who only come for a meal.

220日も過ぎてにわかに飽きめいてきたある朝。

One morning, after 220 days had passed, I suddenly began to feel bored.

ひとわたり客が来て去った後のことだが、

It was after a wave of customers had come and gone.

顔色の冴えない若者が一人ぬっと入ってきた。

A young man with a pale complexion suddenly entered.

彼は島の人へに、

He is towards the people of the island.

三尺を占め懐でをしていた。

I was holding it in my bosom, taking up three shaku.

あらいらっしゃい、中さん、おひとり。

Welcome, Naka-san, are you alone?

おうめがにっと笑いかけた。

Oume smiled gently.

ばかに早いじゃないの。

Isn't it a bit too early?

六さんはどうなすって。

What happened to Roku?

一本つけてくれ。

Give me one.

若者は言った。

The young man said.

娘のほうは見もしなかった。

I didn't even look at my daughter.

懐でのまま半台へ肘をついてむっと膨れた顔をしていた。

I was sulking with a puffed-up face, resting my elbows on the half-table in my lap.

おうめは、

Oume is,

おうめは不審そうな目をした。

Oume looked at him with suspicious eyes.

調べるような目で横から若者の表情をうかがって、そして言った。

She looked at the young man's expression with a scrutinizing gaze from the side, and then said.

またけんかをしたのね。

You had another fight, didn’t you?

あさっぱらから酒だなんて決まってるわ。

Drinking alcohol first thing in the morning is just how it is.

酒をつけてくれってんだ。

I'm asking you to pour me some sake.

若者はそっぽを見たまま言った。

The young person said while looking away.

娘は何か言い返そうとした。

My daughter tried to say something in response.

けれども右手で誰かを呼ぶような身振りをし、

However, making a gesture as if to call someone with the right hand,

しょうがないと言った。

I said there's nothing that can be done.

人でも言うように、

As people say,

のれん口から板場へ入って行った。

He went into the kitchen through the noren entrance.

二人の子女は奥で朝食を食べていた。

The two children were eating breakfast inside.

店にはほかに客はなく、

There were no other customers in the shop,

吹き込んだ半台に外からの光がうつって、

The light from outside reflects on the half-drum that was blown into.

冷たそうに光っていた。

It was gleaming coldly.

若者は顔をゆがめて舌打ちをした。

The young person grimaced and clicked their tongue.

それから口の中で低くつぶやいた。

Then I whispered softly in my mouth.

若者は舌にさわる。

The young person touches their tongue.

ごじょうな野郎だ。

What a pain in the ass.

娘が膳を運んできた。

My daughter brought the tableware.

お魚がないんだけれど、

There's no fish, but...

何かこしらえましょうか。

Shall I prepare something?

若者はだまっていた。

The young person was silent.

かきたまお好きだったわね。

You liked egg drop soup, didn't you?

かきたまにのりかかでも作りましょうか。

Shall we make it with a scrambled egg on top?

いらねえよ、そんなもの。

I don't need that kind of thing.

若者は膳の上からとっくりをとった。

The young man took the sake bottle from the tray.

となることはないでしょう。

It probably won't happen.

おうめは悲しそうな目つきをした。

Oume had a sad look in her eyes.

自分たちどうしでけんかをして、

We fought with each other,

あたしにとばっちりをくれることはないわ。

You won't drag me into this.

あたし何にもしりゃしないじゃないの。

I'm not doing anything, you know.

となったわけじゃねえ。

That's not what happened.

若者はてじゃくでしごはい続けざまにあおった。

The young person continued to be urged on with a hand gesture.

ほっといてくれってんだよ。

Just leave me alone.

あんたたちどうして、

Why are you all...

うそをけんかをするんでしょ。

You're going to fight about lies, aren't you?

いっそべつべつになっちまえばいいんだわ。

It would be better if we just separated completely.

むすめはいたばへはいっていった。

The daughter entered the hut.

きんすけがいましがたかいだしにでかけたあとだった。

Kinsuke had just gone out to the convenience store.

おうめはかつおぶしをかき、

Oume grates bonito flakes,

のりをあぶってもみ、

Roast the nori and crumble it.

そのふたつをまぜてしょうゆをかけた。

I mixed those two and added soy sauce.

いわゆるのりかかであろう。

It would be what is commonly referred to as "norikaka."

それからこなべでだしじるをわかしながらねぎをきざみ、

Then, while boiling the broth in the pot, chop the green onions.

たまごのしろみをわんにといてかきたまをつくった。

I beat the egg whites and made a scrambled egg.

いじょうのことをてまめにやりながら、

While diligently doing the above things,

おうめは若者にむかっていいつづけた。

Oume kept telling the young people.

よねんもごねんもいっしょにかせぐし、

"Let's earn together for both four years and five years."

ねおきからなにからいっしょにしていて、

I've been doing everything together since waking up.

ふだんはじつのきょうだいよりなかがいいくせに。

Usually, you get along better with your friends than with your real siblings.

いつもつまらないことですぐけんかをするのね。

You always get into fights over trivial matters, don't you?

あんたもあんただけれど。

You're not the only one at fault.

おうめはみせのほうへいきながらいった。

Oume said as she walked towards the store.

だいたいろくさんがわるいわ。

It's mostly Roku's fault.

あんたのしょうぶんがわかっているのにちっともしんしゃくしないんだもの。

You know my feelings, yet you don’t seem to care at all.

あのひとにはゆずるってことができないんだから。

I can't give in to that person.

うるせえ。よけいなことをいうな。

Shut up. Don't say unnecessary things.

わかものがおうめをにらみつけた。

The young man glared at the crow.

ろくすけはおれのともだちだ。

Rokusuke is my friend.

あ、おれのともだちのことをわるくいうつもりか。

Ah, are you planning to speak badly about my friend?

なにもあら。

Nothing at all.

あたしわるくなんか。

I'm not a bad person.

あたしただろくすけはいいにんげんなんだ。

I just really think Rokusuke is a good person.

わかものはわんをとりながらいった。

The young person said while taking a dog.

おめえなんぞしってこっちゃねえや。

I don't care about what you know.

おうめのめになみだがあふれてきた。

Tears began to overflow from my eyes.

おうめはだまっていたばのほうへさった。

Oume silently turned towards the side of the barn.

それはあいするものにすげなくされたむすめのかなしくやるせなげなすがたににていた。

It resembled the sorrowful and helpless figure of a daughter who had been harshly treated by someone she loved.

そういうじょうあいがかなりあらわにかんじられた。

Such feelings of affection were felt quite openly.

わかものはさけをにほんのみめしをたべてかえった。

The young person returned after eating Japanese food and drinking sake.

おうめはしまいまできゅうじをしたがひとこともくちをきかなかった。

Oume worked as a maid until the very end but didn't speak a word.

そしてわかものがたちさるとあとからそっとおおらいへでてうしろすがたをみおくった。

And then, after the young people left, I quietly stepped out into the hallway and watched their figures from behind.

わかものはきのぬけたようなあるきぶりで、

The young person walked in a seemingly listless manner.

だんじょうばしのてまえをみぎへえっちゅうぼりにそってまがっていった。

I turned right along the ditch before Danjou Bridge.

おうめがみせのなかへもどるとまっていたようにまたひとりのわかものがはいってきた。

As Oume returned inside the shop, another young person came in as if they had been waiting.

ぶしょうひげののびたたくましいかおでからだもたくましくこえていた。

He had a strong face with a bushy beard, and his body was also robust.

かれはしまのひとえにひらぐけをしめすそのかたほうをはしょりかたにてぬぐいをひっかけていた。

He was hanging a towel by the edge of the island, showing one side of the flat surface.

おはようとかれはおうめにいった。

Good morning, he went to Oume.

すまないがさけをつけてくれないか。

I'm sorry, but could you please add some alcohol?

いらっしゃい。いまちゅうさんがかえったとこよ。

Welcome. Chuu just got back.

おうめはげんきそうにびしょうした。

Oume smiled brightly as if she was doing well.

またふたりでけんかしたんでしょう。

You two got into another fight, didn’t you?

ちゅうさんったらいきなりひとをどなりつけたりしてあたしがさもわるいみたいにけんつくをくわすんだもの。

Chuu-san suddenly shouts at people and acts like I'm the one at fault, adding unnecessary stress.

あのひとすっかりいけなくなったわ。

That person has completely become unable to go.

まるっきりせんのようじゃなかった。

It didn't look like it was completely done.

なくなったわ。もうすこしであたし。

It's gone. I'm almost there.

すまないがやめてくれないか。

I'm sorry, but could you please stop?

かれはおだやかにさえぎった。

He calmly interjected.

ちゅうじはおれのともだちだからな。

Chūji is my friend.

おれのまえでともだちのことをわるくいうのはよしてもらいたいんだ。

I would like you to stop speaking poorly about my friend in front of me.

おうめはきっとくちびるをかんだ。

Oume must have bitten her lip.

それからりょうてをにぎりしめてゆっくりと

Then, holding both hands tightly, slowly...

いたばのほうへゆきながらはとはのあいだでつぶやいた。

While heading towards the place of the itaba, I murmured between the leaves.

いつもこれなんだから。

It's always like this.

いいつらのかわだわ。

It's a nice face, isn't it?

ろくすけとちゅうじはぼうぐみのかごやであった。

Rokusuke and Chuuji were in the basket of the defense group.

かれらはみなみはっちょうぼりにちょうめのよへいだなといううらながやにすんでいた。

They lived in a back room of a house called Yoheidana on Minami Hachichōbori Street.

ろくすけはこえていた。

Rokusuke had crossed over.

としはにじゅうしちであるがうっかりするとしじゅうくらいにみえた。

Although he is twenty-seven, he can easily be mistaken for being around forty.

かたぶとりでけぶかくてあぶらしょうで

It's thick and oily with a slanted roof.

ふといまゆげやおおきなめやはなのまわりにいつもあぶらをうかせていた。

He always had oil glistening around his thick eyebrows, large eyes, and nose.

くちびるはあついがりょうたんがひきしまっていてかたちはかなりよかった。

The lips were thick, but the jawline was firm, and the shape was quite good.

きたはっちょうぼりのうおきんのおうめなどは

At Kitahatchobori, the fish kin and the cherry blossoms.

ろくさんのくちびるをみていた。

I was looking at Rokusan's lips.

きいているとすいつきたくなるというぐらいであった。

もっともそれはろくすけをてれさせ

どうじにちゅうじのとしんをそそるのがもくてきらしいが

かれのかおはひげだらけであった。

かおのしたはんぶんがくろくてかたいけにうまっていた。

The lower half of the face was buried in hard black mud.

しかしかれはそれをそらなかった。

まいあさいちどははさみでにぶくらいにかるのであった。

Every morning, it was so light that it could be cut with scissors.

どうしてかみそりをつかわねえんだ。

Why don't you use a razor?

はじめのころちゅうじがそういった。

In the beginning, Chuuji said that.

なぜそんなにぶしょったらしくしておくんだ。

Why do you keep acting so clumsy?

はったりをきかせるつもりか。

Are you intending to bluff?

ろくすけはにやにやわらってそれからゆっくりとこたえた。

Rokusuke smiled slyly and then answered slowly.

これにはわけがあるんだ。

There is a reason for this.

これをきれいにそるわけにはいかねえんだ。

I can't shave this off neatly.

よっぽどのことがねえかぎり

Unless it's something really significant.

こいつはこのくらいにしておく。

I'll leave it at this for now.

おかなくちゃならねえんだ。

I have to do it.

そしてむなげをなでた。

And then I stroked the chest.

むなげはくまのようにこかった。

The chest hair was as thick as a bear's.

またすねのけとくるとしんじられないほどであった。

It was unbelievable that they would come back to the shinbone again.

なつになるとそのみっしりはえたすねげのなかで

When summer comes, among the lushly grown leg hair...

いつもにさんびきのかがひめいをあげていた。

I always raised the call of the three shining princesses.

かたちはちをすいにもぐりこむが

It dives into the shape of the eight.

すねげのやぶがあんまりみつなので

The brambles on the shin are so dense.

それにひっかかってだっしゅつすることができなくなるのであった。

As a result, I was unable to escape because I got caught in that.

ろくすけはきげんのいいときには

Rokusuke is in a good mood when...

けをかきわけてかれらをにがしてやるのをたのしみにした。

I looked forward to pushing through the branches and setting them free.

ちゅうじはこえてもいずやせてもいなかった。

It was neither a long-distance journey nor a short one.

いろがあさぐろくいなせなかおだちで

With a somewhat dark and beautiful complexion.

としはろくすけとおなじであるが

Like Toshihiro, but...

ふたつばかりわかくみえた。

They looked a bit younger.

うけくちのくちびるのかつては

Once, the lips of the receiving mouth...

かたほうをすこしゆがめ

Slightly warp one side.

けむったいようなめをするくせがあった。

They had a habit of looking with smoky eyes.

そうするとにがみばしったいいおとこぶりにみえた。

Then he appeared to be a good man, with a hint of bitterness.

うおきんのおうめはかれにねつをあげているが

The fish's eyes are giving him a fever.

ちゅうじのそんなひょうじょうをみると

Seeing Chuuji's expression like that...

いのところをとりのはねでなでられるようなきもちになる

It feels like being gently stroked by a bird's wing on the comforting spots.

というくらいであった。

かれはきれいづきで

He is fond of cleanliness.

まいにちきちんとかみそりをあてるし

I shave properly every day.

みっかにいちどはかみゆいどこへゆくし

"Once every three days, I wonder where the divine spirit goes."

あかじみたものなどけしてみにつけるようなことはなかった。

I never had anything like a red stain on me.

ろくすけはどうさがゆっくりしていた。

Rokusuke was taking his time relaxing.

はなしぶりものんびりしていた。

The way of speaking was relaxed.

おこっているときでも

Even when I'm angry

どうさやことばづかいにかわりはなかった。

There was no change in the way she spoke.

よほどおこったときでもふくれるだけで

Even when I'm really angry, I just sulk.

おおきなこえをだすようなことはなかった。

There wasn't anything that would make me raise my voice.

ちゅうじはせっかちでもなく

Chuuji is neither hasty nor impatient.

わるくおちついてもいなかった。

I wasn't feeling bad or settled down.

すこしかんがつよくてむくちで

A little strong-minded and unsociable.

おこりっぽいところがあった。

There was a tendency to be temperamental.

おこるとむきになってどなった。

When I got angry, I yelled earnestly.

ぼうりょくをふるうのがきらいなので

I dislike exercising violence.

いっそうはげしくどなるようであった。

It seemed like he was getting increasingly angry and shouting.

ふたりはよへいだなのほりのほうからかぞえて

The two of them are counting from the direction of the ruins of Yohei.

しちけんめとはちけんめにすんでいた。

They lived in the seven-star and the eight-star.

ふたりでしちけんめにいるときもあるし

Sometimes we are together in the seventh heaven.

はちけんめにいるときもあった。

There were times when I was in a difficult situation.

またしちけんめとはちけんめとに

わかれてすんでいることもあった。

There were times when we lived apart.

わかれているときはけんかをしているので

そうなるとおたがいにくちもきかず

そんななまきをさくようなまねをしていいのか。

よへいにはいみがわからなかった。

Yohei didn't understand the meaning.

かんげいてみろとかれらはいった。

"Try to appreciate it," they said.

いっしょにいるけれど

Even though we're together.

またけんかをすればわかれなければならない。

If we fight again, we will have to part ways.

そのときとなりがあいていないとすれば

If the next door is not open at that time.

ひとりはどこかよそへゆくかんじょうだから

"One feels like going somewhere else."

つまりなまきをさくわけだろうじゃないか。

In other words, you're going to shred the raw fish, right?

よへいははじめてりょうかいした。

Yohei understood for the first time.

けれどもやぬしのたちばとしては

たとえながやのいっけんにもしろ

そこでりょうしゃは

ふたりはこざっぱりとくらしていた。

ほとんどうおきんのことがおおい

There are mostly good things about the fisherman.

すませいいえではにたきをしなかった。

I'm sorry, but I didn't cry.

かってにはみずがめもないし

There is no water in the aquarium anyway.

もちろんなべかまも

Of course, including the pot as well.

そのたのしょっきもなかった。

There was no other enjoyment.

ふるどうぐやで

It's a second-hand shop.

かったたんすがひとさおと
