Well then, Matsui-san, thank you very much. Yes, please. This time we have ten questions we want to ask Mr. Hideki Matsui, gathered from our listeners.
We will have Matsui-san answer the questions we received, but first, this one is from the radio name Billion0415.
I heard that Matsui was hitting right-handed at first and was hitting too far in amateur baseball, so his older brother made him switch to left-handed hitting.
What do you think would have happened if he had continued to bat right-handed? What would have happened if Matsui Hideki had batted right-handed?
Many thoughts come to mind, right? That's why it felt more natural that way.
Maybe it would have been easier to hit if I had done it with my left.
Well, it's precisely because I changed the left side.
Somehow, I feel like since I changed to the left, I really have to practice properly, and those kinds of thoughts come to me naturally.
I really can't say anything about this, so I feel like it was on the right side in the sense that I was able to hit it naturally.
However, I think the reason I felt the need to push myself is precisely because I became a left-hander.
I feel that way, but if I were a right-handed batter, I could have developed my potential, but as a left-handed batter...
By making changes and putting in effort there, it was possible to exceed one's potential.
I can't really say much about that, but of course, I'm most looking forward to seeing what would have happened if I had kept practicing and hitting on the right.
But you know, if I had been able to hit it more easily, I might have ended up in a situation where I didn’t practice and then stumbled somewhere along the way.
I never thought about being a switch hitter.
I didn't think about it, probably because of youth baseball or something.
It's a hassle, but they were saying things like "little league," and there wasn't even a left-handed pitcher, was there?
Hnnnnn, in the countryside of Ishikawa, there isn't much of a place there.
I could have given it to you, of course, but it seems like there aren't many pitchers that are that great in elementary school.
I don't have any memories of having a match. I see, that's why I've only been practicing with my left side.
I realized that somehow the left side has...
It was becoming easy to hit, right? I see.
So from now on, on the left.
I was a fan of that rivalry, and I liked Mr. Kake. That's why I had admired left-handed hitters.
There was also the fact that, you know, back in the day, I was really fast.
たんで
"Tan de" translates to "It's a tan."
In the old days, they used to say that first base is indeed fast, like someone who arrives quickly, or something like that.
Well, from that kind of thinking that anyone would normally come up with...
It's natural to become like that, of course, that brother.
I don't know what your intentions were when you said that.
Well, it's really like this with anything, but once you decide on one side, then the other one...
Not knowing the outcome is something that can't be helped, but...
Next, from Yoshikichi Horiguchi in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, what was Matsui's particular attachment to his bat?
How about this? Well, I have a few points in my mind.
Well, it's really about tomorrow, but still, for me, it's about the feeling when I grip it.
Rather, it's like a sense of security, something you can feel as a part of your own body.
I ended up wanting something like that after all.
The bat is gradually adjusted each year according to my skills.
I was gradually changing things, but every year during the off-season, I would go to the bat factory.
I'm here.
I was making almost annual fine adjustments in terms of touch and very subtle aspects.
Well, when I was at Jants, every year...
The bat factory was in Gifu, and I went to the bat factory and had it made on the spot.
I was able to play there soon, you know, we went there every year.
The obsession with texture really is just a tiny bit more every year.
Does it become different? I mean, not just different, but during that season...
I'm thinking about wanting to do this next year to some extent, at least once a year.
Once I decide, I will stick with it for a year, but if it's during the season, then next year I will do it like this.
The idea of "maybe" has already come to mind during the season.
It comes out, you know, I see.
Now, moving on, we have received a message from a listener named "Onbu ni Rakko."
If I could live a baseball life once again.
So, when would you like to go back to? Aaaaaaah!
That's a good question!
There are several: youth baseball, high school baseball, the Giants, and Major League Baseball.
If that's the only place you can do it, then a
That's difficult.
If that's the only place, then if everything else can be done from there, let's start again from youth baseball.
I can do everything, but if that's the only place I can return to...
うーん
Hmm.
Hey, is it really that kind of case?
ん
Mhm.
If I were to go back to just one place, it would be the Yankees.
Well, one thing I thought is that the Japanese style and the old-fashioned search have really...
I think I want to go once. Yeah, that's really the best.
It's a dream that can no longer be fulfilled, but back in the day, there was something about the author standing out at a certain level, yeah.
I just thought of this for a moment.
I think Jantsu is also nice.
I knew it.
"Just as I thought."
One more time with the pinstripes.
Old Yankee Stadium
That means
It has a deep significance, doesn't it?
Standing at the Tokyo Dome towards the Giants.
What I'm saying is that if I ask selfishly, they might let me do it.
That's right, that's right.
Just one word and it's immediately possible.
A word or two.
You might need a check-up.
Well, moving on...
From Atsuko Hirayama in Ota Ward.
I received it, but...
Major League era
Did you manage to communicate well?
That's what I'm saying.
Only in English.
When it comes to the question of how much I've accomplished,
It was still difficult, wasn't it?
As time goes by.
Little by little, understanding and such.
喋る
to speak
Rather than a variation,
Gradually increasing.
I'll go and come back, but...
But after all, that's...
Talking with native people is
I could no longer talk at the same level at all.
It's still the case now.
In that sense, after all...
For them, you know.
There are parts that may have caused stress, but...
After that, if we have an interpreter,
Of course, I can go into the details.
If an interpreter is involved, it can't be helped...
After all, there can be a loss of time.
In that sense.
Good for the other party.
Because I can communicate effectively.
I wonder how far we've come now.
To be honest, there really is.
そのね
Well, you see...
What kind of person they are, and so on.
It's like we can understand each other in that way.
Things like that, you know.
As expected.
There are also parts that are unrelated to words.
I feel like I've been able to do that to some extent.
During the Yankees era, we were allowed to conduct an interview.
What I thought was
Even inside the clubhouse
Mr. Matsui and other Major League Baseball players as well.
Other than those words.
Facial expressions and so on.
With a smile or something.
Such wonderfully good communication.
It seems that Matsui-san is welcoming us.
I felt that kind of thing too, you know.
That's right.
Especially at the beginning.
Everyone might have been considerate about it too.
You can generally understand it if you're there for a long time.
Basically, the clubhouse is...
I'm only talking about trivial things, you know.
That's why you gradually get used to it.
That's how it is.
When it comes to serious conversations, after all...
It will change completely again.
Usually, you know.
In the clubhouse.
When you're relaxed...
We haven't communicated that much.
Everyone probably.
Mr. Matsui
When transferring teams in the major leagues.
This is a radio name.
I received it from someone called Eien no Kyūji.
When transferring to a new team
Matsui style
Was there a way to blend in?
Are you asking how to blend in?
Hey.
It's obvious, but...
Well, first of all, it's like meeting for the first time.
At times like that, properly...
It's more like something I have to do.
Like properly introducing oneself and such.
Do your best.
It's important to properly listen to the other person as well.
I've done that to some extent.
Whether it was good or bad.
That's a different issue, though.
Well, after that...
Be considerate.
There are players who invite me to various things.
At first, after all...
I tried to spend time with you as much as possible, didn't I?
That's the way things are.
That might have been good.
I think so, you know.
Well, actually, the Giants...
Sho Nakata from Nippon Ham has...
You suddenly transferred, didn't you?
I have moved here.
Both Nakata himself and those around him in this area.
While being careful in various ways
As a member of the team
I think it's probably coming in.
Yeah, of course, it's mutual.
We may be mindful of each other, but...
Well, once you step onto the baseball field...
Well, about that...
If it doesn't bother you too much, it doesn't matter.
It's game time on the ground.
Once you step out onto the ground, you know.
That's already one for everyone.
The same goal, huh?
"Playing with the aim of victory."
With the same goal.
Because we're going out onto the field.
Well, as time goes by with those moments...
Little by little, our understanding of each other increases.
I think it will deepen.
While that is already through the act of playing baseball,
I think it will deepen.
Yes, understood.
The next question is...
From the radio name, Mr. Le Mans
I think it can be useful in the majors in Japan.
Is there a pitcher?
I think there are quite a few pitchers, aren't there?
Probably.
This pitcher is...
It's quite a name, isn't it?
Well, a few people will definitely come out, but...
I believe Japanese pitchers have an incredibly high level of skill.
Overall, that is...
Yeah, that's why it works.
Well, what do you mean by "being accepted" anyway?
See you later, there's that difficult part, though.
For example, entering the rotation, you know?
Pitching in relief.
I think there are many pitchers like that, aren't there?
Probably.
うん
Yeah.
Now, next up is...
This is from radio listener Rurashige.
This year's professional baseball is highly competitive, but...
Is there really such a thing as the atmosphere of a winning team?
When did that makeup drama start?
Did you feel that?
This is from 1996, right? It's actually a makeup drama.
It was a dramatic turnaround victory.
How's the atmosphere? Winning!
Well, that's only natural.
The atmosphere will improve if we win.
If you lose, things will get worse.
Well, it's a series of that.
Somehow, even if I'm talking to the people around me...
Yeah, it feels like I might be able to do it, or like I have a sense of it.
えー
Uh...
There are times like that too.
Even if we talk about games to the same extent, this year is still tough, you know?
There are times when I feel that way for some reason.
Of course, when it comes to the game, it doesn't matter and we just play.
So that raises the question of what it actually is.
Like that invisible sense of touch.
Such things do happen, after all.
So even in 1996...
Well, looking back now, of course, it's like this.
I think there were elements.
For example, it was Saito and Galvez, I suppose, at that time.
When the two of them threw, it really felt like they were almost already winning.
From the middle of the game, that reliever closer.
That year, I was called Gen-chan, Gen-chan.
Gen-chan, Gen-chan, it’s a call for Gen-chan!
That's right, that's right, that's right, that's right.
Yes, yes, yes.
Like Mr. Kawaguchi and so on.
The pitcher suddenly started doing something from halfway through.
It's strange to say suddenly, but...
Well, Saaito-san, Garbes was good at first, but...
ああ
Ah.
It's like, you know, everyone started to click into it or something.
うん
Yeah.
On the batting line as well, at Maruyama Stadium...
A big comeback with nine consecutive hits.
There was a gap of about 11 games until then.
From there, the batting lineup really improved.
I remember a little bit.
Yeah, that year Hiroshima was already way ahead.
It was just that two-game series against Hiroshima, wasn't it?
In Sapporo, you know.
That's where those 9 companies in a row are.
うん
Yeah.
The next day, Galvez pitched really well and we won two in a row.
うん
Yeah.
It feels like it started from there.
It certainly felt like I suddenly got on the rise in kills, didn't it?
うん
Yeah.
Well, the batting lineup was also very lively at that time, just like Mr. Daichi.
That Mac was quite active as well.
Well, that year, rookie Miss and Miss Shimi.
He was performing well in a very strong lineup.
It's kind of like that, you know?
That pitching surf was the same way, too.
The batting lineup also started to click into place midway through the game.
うん
Yeah.
That year, Galvez had an amazing pitch.
So, there were those two matches in Sapporo.
From there, it suddenly became a series of consecutive wins, didn't it?
Hey.
Right now in the Central League, the top three teams are in a fierce scramble.
うん
Yeah.
I guess from the player's perspective, this is how it is during times like these.
After all, it's about winning one game at a time.
Isn't the biggest point to ride the momentum?
うん
Yeah.
Well, I'm doing that.
Well, the player...
From the player's perspective, well...
I suppose that's how you feel.
Well, you see, that player also...
Well, I don't really know about that coach or director.
It's quite far ahead, after all.
It's more like tendency to see.
うん
Yeah.
It's easy to think that way, isn't it?
Whether that is good or bad is another matter.
The players are, of course, focused on the match in front of them.
I think the most important thing is to concentrate on the match.
The role of the coaching staff is really about the totality of the pennant race, after all.
I feel like it's not something to think about.
うん
Yeah.
is
is
は
Yes.
My fourth-grade son is a pitcher in Little League baseball, but he has poor control.
How can I gain control?
という
that is; it is said that; called
それは
That is
ですね
That's right.
By the way, I was a pitcher in youth baseball, but I got fired because my control was bad.
笑
Laugh
I see there was such a past.
Unfortunately, it won't come back.
Disqualified Paradise.
I have been playing catcher in youth baseball for a long time.
There is nothing that can respond to me.
I feel a bit sorry about that.
From experience.
There is nothing I can answer based on experience.
I just had the control to thread a needle.
What Mariam Rivera was saying is
First, find your best form.
Make sure to firmly grasp that.
No matter how many times I throw it, it won't change.
Whether or not I'll be able to throw it.
In short, pitchers with poor control are...
The form can get messed up at subtle points, you know.
I think it means that one's senses can become distorted.
彼は
He is.
No matter how many times I throw, I always use the same form.
It's important to be able to throw with the same feeling.
He said so, didn't he?
I would like to hear the words of Mariam Libera.
I can't say anything from my experience, but...
The only thing I can take pride in is
I played with top players in the world.
It's just that, that's all.
That means I was able to hear such a story.
It's a precious word.
はい
Yes.
Now, we have a message from a listener named "Name Unknown," who is a third-year high school student.
Did Mr. Matsui have any routines before the game?
I do various sports, but...
Even if I'm trying not to be nervous,
After finishing meetings and such,
I can't help but feel nervous.
Please let me know if you have any methods to relieve tension.
I always think that...
I often get asked questions like this.
はい
Yes.
I don't think tension is a bad thing.
It's about being nervous.
はい
Yes
I think everyone gets nervous.
I think that's only natural.
Things like having a match.
Also, a match is completely different from regular practice, you know.
うん
Yeah.
But this is my first time with high school baseball too.
When I stood in the batter's box at Koshien, my legs were shaking.
Is it true?
Yes, my legs are shaking.
I still remember it even now.
It was when I was a first-year high school student, so...
I don't think being nervous is a bad thing anymore.
Feeling nervous while being aware of that nervousness.
I believe it's important to find a way not to lose myself.
Quickly return to me.
For example, to calm myself down.
When I look at this spot in the stadium, I always feel calm.
You had something like that, didn't you?
うん
Yeah.
But being nervous is part of becoming a professional baseball player.
When I became a professional baseball player and played in games every day, I didn't feel much nervousness.
But during high school, I didn't have those kinds of thoughts.
When I first participated in Koshien, I was so nervous that I completely failed, you know.
うん
Yeah.
It felt like it ended before I even realized what was going on.
Next time, if there is an opportunity.
I guess we have to do something about that after all.
I need to make use of that experience.
Of course, I was nervous when I went out next time too.
うん
Yeah.
But I had that kind of experience.
Even while feeling nervous, something calms me down.
Well, I think it’s all fine, each to their own.
For example, take a deep breath.
It's important to take a proper look around you, you know.
Well, basically, I'm nervous, I'm saying I'm nervous.
Everyone around is tense too.
I see.
Everyone around is tense, aren't they?
It's not just me.
What I often thought about was the surroundings.
I thought that guy was more nervous than I was.
ね
Right?
On the contrary, are you okay?
That hippo has a bit of a relaxed demeanor, oddly enough.
I'm sure everyone around is nervous too.
So those who aren't nervous, huh?
Especially like that with youth baseball and so on.
It's only natural to be nervous about things like that.
But there are others around who are more tense.
On the contrary, I think it would be fine if you have enough composure to protect that person.

He was commented to be the true long-distance hitter.
What is so amazing about Shohei Ohtani?
I don't know exactly, but...
It's clear at a glance that the power is a bit different, isn't it?
As I thought, first of all...
The power unleashed from his body.
It's like the source of power.
It's easy to stand up with a car, but...
Isn't it that the engine you have is just different?
Also, the technical aspects are a bit...
It's not like I'm always watching.
There are parts I don't understand, but...
As a characteristic, I can hit an incredibly big home run in the opposite direction.
I think this is another major weapon.
I really want to be a Major League pitcher.
There are many pitchers who especially throw to the outside corner.
外角を
Outside corner
Don't pull too hard.
Hitting a home run in the opposite direction, you know?
Just knowing that for yourself is enough.
I think it's quite a significant technological advantage.
Indeed, it is said that the engine is amazing, but...
Somehow, the body is very slim yet...
It's like an engine with no unnecessary parts.
There's a strength to the power, isn't there?
まあ
Well.
I guess it’s because I'm training with wet training.
I have heard this story, but...
In that kind of place, you know.
I appear slender because I'm tall.
I think they probably have quite a bit of muscle mass, after all.
I see.
Now for the next question, it was received from Mr. Kensuke Ito in Hachiōji.
I have exceeded the age of 40 without any bad experiences.
What has Matsui-san realized as they have aged?
By the way, I am...
Haste makes waste.
So, Mr. Matsui, what have you realized now that you've turned 40?
Well, I've never truly understood such magnificent words within myself.
I have realized something.
Your level is completely at zero.
I don't really understand that.
What I felt was sad, but my physical strength has definitely declined.
I can really feel that.
What I've been thinking lately when I look in the mirror is...
This is also sad, but I've noticed that my gray hair is increasing.
It's always things like that, really.
So, like that...
I haven't reached that state of enlightenment yet, not at all.
"I can definitely feel that my physical strength is decreasing."
For example, when do you feel it the most?
First, if you walk for a long distance occasionally,
I'm more tired than just walking this much, you know.
After driving for a long time, I used to be able to drive as much as I wanted when I was younger, but...
My eyes are getting tired.
My back is starting to hurt.
Well, I realized that driving really does require breaks.
I understand it well these days, don't I?
When I was young, I didn't take any breaks at all, just kept going non-stop.
I thought if I could just handle the bathroom situation, I could drive for as long as I wanted.
It's impossible right now.
Please be careful when driving.
When I go to rescue the miner, I will be driving a long distance.
I've been doing quite a bit of long-distance driving in recent years.
I can feel that, right?
I think it's okay to feel a little sleepy when you're young.
I thought it would be better to take a nap if I'm feeling sleepy now.
Absolutely.
Even a 5 or 10 minute nap really makes me feel refreshed.
You've figured it out, haven't you?
When you feel sleepy while driving, you should push yourself.
It's something I've felt since I started avoiding danger.
It's not enlightenment.
What I felt
Mr. Matsui, this is the last question.
Actually, you see...
From active professional baseball players in Japan who are connected to Matsui-san
There is a question for Matsui-san.
I would like you to listen to me for a moment, please.
Hello, Mr. Hideki Matsui.
A junior from Seiryo High School.
I am Okugawa of the Yakult Swallows.
I have a question for Matsui-san.
They are someone who has had a significant influence on me throughout my entire career.
Please share the secret to longevity in professional baseball.
As a junior from Seiryo High School.
From Yakult Swallows pitcher Okugawa.
What should I do to continue my active life for a long time?
I have a question from my cute junior.
I graduated high school 20 years ago.
It was 38 in this era.
In this day and age, 38 is still possible, right?
People who can do it, you know.
So I've been long...
It might be long in terms of 20 years, but...
I injured both of my knees, so for me...
I had surgery when I got injured.
I think I could have done more if I hadn't injured my knees.
Now that I think about it.
Of course, it might have been inevitable.
In that sense, what first comes to mind is...
I think it's definitely an injury.
To avoid getting injured on a regular basis.
From everyday life.
Of course, I try not to get injured while playing baseball as well.
Preparing the body.
It's about focusing properly even during the match.
It's more like I'm distracted.
Such things happen when I'm not fully focused.
I guess there’s also the feeling that I should do it first.
I think this is where the most attention should be focused.
The next thing is, of course, doing it for a long time.
After all, it's about feelings too.
It's difficult if the feelings don't last.
First of all, I like baseball, or rather...
I will live my life on this path from now on.
It's like saying I can't live any other way than this path.
As long as there are baseball players.
I think it's about having that feeling.
I think that's about all I can say based on my own experience.
So of course, if you leave good results.
Because it is needed.
Of course, continuously producing results is also a fundamental premise.
Other than that, it's mainly injuries, right?
I really do love baseball.
"I will live with this."
I think that’s how you feel.
The cute junior pitcher Okukawa from Seiryo High School...
Have you actually met Matsui-san?
Um, we met on the mound at Koshien.
そうか
I see.
But wasn't that just once?
I'm not sure if it's right to say we met, but...
Hey.
Maybe that's not the end of it.
I think that's probably the only time we've met.
This year, I am working very hard and making great efforts.
Mr. Matsui to Pitcher Okugawa.
If you have any words of encouragement, I would appreciate a little cheer.
It means that we are juniors from the same high school.
Of course, there’s no change, but...
It's good, and I want you to do your best.
I want you to pitch well.
Of course, I have those feelings for all the juniors from the same high school.
Because we are teammates wearing the same uniform.
It's more that I want you to do your best, of course I want you to do your best.
It's not about the conversation we had earlier, but I still think it's best to avoid injuries.
I hope you have a good baseball life.
That's all.
Well, he is already a new person from Ishikawa Prefecture.
I think it's a star.
He was setting up the battery.
Is this Yamase, who was on the battery in high school?
Yamase is currently with the Giants.
I'm doing my best in the second team.
After that, the junior who came to the Giants is from a village called Mura.
That's right.
That senior also has Shimauchi at Rakuten.
Everyone is doing their best.
As a senior, I'm really happy to see their success.
I hope everyone will do their best.
And also,
Finally, there was something that pitcher Okugawa was curious about Matsui-san.
Please listen to that for a moment.
Matsui-san is said to have incredible power.
I heard this story from a senior.
There is a heavy bat weighing about 2 kilograms for the baseball team.
It's a heavy wooden bat that weighs about 2 kilograms.
2 kilometers?
It looks like it's about twice as much.
That's right.
It's quite heavy.
A heavy bat is
It would be quite difficult for us to shake it off.
I have a heavy bat, you know.
Mr. Matsui was said to have hit home runs using this bat.
I've heard an amazing story.
Everyone is in poor condition.
It's a bat that you wouldn't believe I was using for this.
The Nishiryo High School baseball team has
There is a legend.
Sometimes legends are stories that have been created.
2-kilogram bat
I don't think we had anything like that on our side.
I don't remember whether I did it or not.
I don't remember, and normally you can't hit a home run with a 2-kilogram bat, right?
I probably can only handle something like the real Godzilla.
Maybe someone made it with the intention of surprising someone.
What about such facts?
ないと
It doesn't exist.
There isn't any.
It is not in my memory.
Mr. Matsui, on the contrary, what weight of bat were you practicing with?
During practice, it was my high school days.
It's an ordinary metal bat.
Normal?
When playing on the field, use a regular metal bat.
That batting practice, for example.
Just that tee batting, you know.
I wonder if there are still things like that, both in the past and now.
There's something called a bamboo bat.
That's it.
It's made out of bamboo, you know.
During the winter, etc.
"Why are we using bamboo bats when it's winter?"
It hurts so much that I can't stand it unless it hits the core.
At times like that, I used to hit with a bamboo bat.
During the winter, I was just playing that tea all the time.
I see.
You know, they tell me to hit on a super fast machine and stuff like that.
It's definitely going to hurt a lot.
It hurts, so I didn't like it.
You were always just hitting tees, weren’t you?
But I think that was a good thing, actually.
If it hurts too much, you can't play.
I see, yes, I understand.
I was called on the radio by someone who loves baseball.
