今年2021年は日本でも有名なハリーポッターが公開されてから20周年になりましたね

This year, 2021, marks the 20th anniversary since the release of the famous Harry Potter in Japan.

先月と今月金曜ロードショーで見たよという方もいらっしゃるんじゃないでしょうか

Some of you may have watched it on the Friday Roadshow last month and this month.

皆さんもご存知の通りハリーポッターはイギリス英語ですよね

As you all know, Harry Potter is in British English, right?

ということで今回は知っておくと便利 メジャーなイギリス英語をご紹介します

So this time, I will introduce some useful major British English terms that you should know.

ナンバーワン

Number one

ラビッシュ

Rubbish

ラビッシュはゴミを指すイギリス英語なんです

Rubbish refers to garbage in British English.

ちなみにアメリカ英語だとガーベッジと呼ばれてますね

By the way, it's called garbage in American English.

またゴミ箱を言いたい時はイギリス英語ではラビッシュビン

In British English, when you want to say garbage can, it's rubbish bin.

アメリカ英語ではガーベッジキャンと呼びます

In American English, it is called a garbage can.

英国語のスピーチという映画にも出てくる表現なのでぜひ注目してみてみてくださいね

It's an expression that also appears in the movie "The King's Speech," so please be sure to pay attention to it.

私自身初めて

For the first time myself.

聞いた時は驚きましたが

I was surprised when I heard it.

ルーはトイレを意味する言葉なんです

"Roo" means the word for toilet.

音がかわいいのでトイレのイメージと結びつきませんが

The sound is so cute that it doesn't really connect with the image of a toilet.

よく使われるので覚えておくとベターです

It's commonly used, so it's better to remember it.

またイギリス英語でトイレを意味する単語には

The word that means "toilet" in British English is

トイレットが存在します

There is a toilet.

アメリカ英語でもトイレットという言葉自体はありますが

The word "toilet" does exist in American English, but...

便器自体を指してしまいます

It points to the toilet itself.

あまり綺麗なイメージではなく

It's not a very pretty image.

下品な言葉に当たってしまうため

Because it encounters vulgar language.

アメリカ英語では

In American English,

バッドルームやレストルームと言い換えるようにしてくださいね

Please use terms like "bathroom" or "restroom" instead.

オーバージーンは日本でもよく食べられている

Overjean is often eaten in Japan as well.

あの紫色の野菜です

That purple vegetable.

アメリカ英語では形からエッグプランツと呼ばれている

In American English, it is called eggplant based on its shape.

そうナスのことなんです

It's about the eggplant.

野菜の名前はエッグプランツです

The name of the vegetable is eggplant.

野菜の名前は同じかと思いきや

I thought the names of the vegetables were the same, but...

A、Bで違う呼び方をされているなんて面白いですよね

It's interesting how they are referred to differently as A and B.

ブラディ

Brady

ブラディはアメリカ英語で考えると

When thinking in American English, Brady...

血まみれという単語です

The word is "blood-soaked."

実はこの言葉は

In fact, this word is

怒っている時や強調したい時に使われる

Used when angry or when something needs to be emphasized.

イギリス英語のスラングにもなるんです

It can also be British English slang.

文脈でいい意味があるので

It has a good meaning in context.

何か悪い意味の強調かを判断する必要があります

It is necessary to determine whether there is an emphasis on something negative.

例えば

For example

It's bloody cold

It's bloody cold.

とっても寒いなんて言えるそうですよ

They say it's really cold.

アメリカ英語では血まみれという意味のみなので

In American English, it only means "covered in blood."

強調の言葉としては使われません

It is not used as a word for emphasis.

使い方には注意しましょうね
