2回目のラジオではハワイの教育事情について伺ったんですけれども

In the second radio episode, I asked about the educational situation in Hawaii.

今回のラジオではその続きのお話を伺っていきたいなと思っています

In this radio program, I would like to hear the continuation of that story.

ハワイで子育てをする中で驚いたこととか

Things that surprised me while raising children in Hawaii.

これはすごいなと思ったことって何かありますか?

Is there something that you thought was amazing?

ハワイ独自だなと思ったのが

I thought it was uniquely Hawaiian.

やっぱり公立の小学校に子どもたちを通わせているんですが

I'm still sending my children to a public elementary school.

その学校の授業の一環として

As part of the school's curriculum.

ハワイアンスタディっていう

It's called Hawaiian Study.

ハワイの文化を学ぶ授業があるっていうところ

There is a class that teaches about Hawaiian culture.

すごい驚きました

I was truly surprised.

どんなことを学ぶんですか?

What kind of things do you learn?

やっぱりハワイって文字を持たない文化だったんですよ

After all, Hawaii was a culture that did not have a written language.

そうなんですか?

Is that so?

知らなかった

I didn't know.

いろんな大事なこととか歴史とかって

Various important things and history, etc.

踊りとかダンスの中に組み込んで伝えられてたっていう歴史があるんですが

There is a history of it being conveyed through forms like dance and movement.

そういうことをね

That's what I'm talking about.

そういう事実を学んだりとか

Learning about such facts.

実際に歌を学んだりとか

Like actually learning to sing or something.

あとハワイ語で挨拶ができるようになるために

いろんな単語を学んだりとかしています

I'm learning various words.

ハワイアンダンスとかも踊ったりするんですか?

Do you also dance Hawaiian dance?

うん、フラダンスみたいなのね

みんなで練習して

今度5月にメイディっていって

This May, I'm going to say "Meidi."

大きな文化祭みたいなのがあるんだけど

There's something like a big cultural festival.

それはもう全員参加型

It's already a participation type for everyone.

子どもたちね

The children.

学年ごとにハワイアンダンスを踊っているんですよ

Each grade level is dancing Hawaiian dance.

みんなで一緒にお祝いをするっていう

It means "to celebrate together with everyone."

そういう行事もありますよ

There are events like that too.

すごい可愛いですね

You are really cute!

ちっちゃい子のハワイアンダンスすごい

The little kid's hula dance is amazing.

そう、すごい可愛い

Yes, so cute!

そしてね、そういう行事の時って

And you know, during events like that,

びっくりするんですけど

I'm surprised.

雨がちょっと降ったりするんですね

It sometimes rains a little, doesn't it?

でもハワイの人たちはね

But the people of Hawaii...

全然気にしなくて

Don't worry about it at all.

むしろハワイで雨って

Rather, it's rain in Hawaii.

祝福の雨っていう意味があって

It means "rain of blessings."

あー、なんか今日のこういう行事を

Ah, it seems like today's event is...

祝福するための

For the purpose of celebration

ブレッシングレインだねとか言って

It's like saying "Blessing Rain."

本当になんかニコニコしながら

Really, while smiling brightly.

小雨の中でダンス踊ったりします

I dance in the light rain.

いやーなんかそれすごいハワイっぽいですね

Wow, that really feels like Hawaii!

うん、そうなの

Yeah, that's right.

なんか日本だったら雨降ってきちゃった

It suddenly started to rain in Japan.

うわーってなっちゃうじゃないですか

It makes you go "Whoa!" doesn't it?

ちょっとね、あー残念だったねみたいな

Well, it's just a bit like, "Oh, that's too bad."

雰囲気になるけど

It has a certain atmosphere, but...

ハワイだったらみんなそれでニコニコするんですね

If it's Hawaii, everyone smiles with that, right?

そう、ブレッシングレインだって言って

Yes, they said it's Blessing Rain.

踊ってると雨が降って虹が出たりするんですよ

When I dance, it rains and a rainbow appears.

あー素敵ー

Ah, wonderful!

うん、本当にね

Yeah, really.

なんかそういうちょっと信じられないミラクルみたいなのが

It's like a little miracle that you can't quite believe.

日常の中でね、あるような

In everyday life, something that seems to exist.

自然の恵みにあふれた場所ですね

It's a place rich in the blessings of nature.

そっかー、じゃあそんなハワイ文化をね

I see, well then, that Hawaiian culture...

学校で学ぶということで

Because it is about learning at school.

他にこれはハワイならではだなってことってあります?

Is there anything else that can only be found in Hawaii?

あのね、ハワイの人たちは

You know, the people of Hawaii...

一緒にご飯を食べるっていうのをすごく大切にしていて

I really cherish the idea of eating together.

あの、ビーチなんかでもね

Well, even at the beach...

あの、バーベキューのグリルとか

Um, the barbecue grill and so on.

持ち込んでテント張って

Bring it in and set up the tent.

ゆっくりしてる人たちを見る機会があるかもしれないんですが

You might have the opportunity to see people who are taking it slow.

とにかくご飯を食べながら一緒に過ごす時間っていうのを

Anyway, the time spent together while eating is what matters.

すごい、すごく重要視してます

Amazing, I think it's very important.

で、あの、学校の校長先生も

Well, um, the school principal also...

年度始めの保護者向けの説明会で

At the beginning of the year, during the information session for parents.

とにかく家族が揃って夕飯を食べる時間を大切にしてください

Anyway, please value the time when the whole family gathers for dinner.

で、宿題とか習い事も大切だけど

Well, homework and extracurricular activities are important, but...

一緒に夕飯を食べるっていうのが

The idea of having dinner together is...

心の安定にもすごくつながってきますよみたいな話をして

It connects really well to mental stability, or something like that.

できたら週4回は一緒に食べてくださいとかね

If possible, please eat together about four times a week.

そういうお話があるぐらい

There are stories like that.

一緒にご飯を食べる時間っていうのを大切にしてますね

I value the time spent eating together.

素敵ですね

That's lovely.

ハワイってお花っていう言葉あるじゃないですか

There's a word for flowers in Hawaii, isn't there?

家族って

What is family?

やっぱりそういう言葉が大切にされるぐらいだから

After all, those kinds of words are valued.

やっぱりそういう風に家族の時間とか

I knew it, family time like that...

すごく大切にされてる場所なんですね

It's a place that is really valued.

うん、そうですね

Yeah, that's right.

みんなやっぱり家族でクオリティータイプを過ごす

Everyone really spends quality time with family.

ご飯もそうだし

It's the same with rice.

一緒に海に遊びに行ったりとか

Going to play in the sea together.

外でのんびりピクニックをしたりするとか

Like having a relaxing picnic outside.

そういう時間とても大切にしている感じがしますね

I feel that time is very precious.

なるほど

I see.

あとは私が個人的に聞きたいのは

What I personally want to ask is...

愛さんってニューヨークでも子育てされてて

Aiko is raising children in New York too.

今ハワイでも子育てされてて

I'm currently raising children in Hawaii.

ハワイとニューヨークのここが違うよっていう子育て事情ありますか?

Are there differences in child-rearing situations between Hawaii and New York?

そうですね

That's right.

私の主観的な感想になってしまうんですが

It might become my subjective impression, but...

ニューヨークはやっぱり成功を目指してる人とか

New York is definitely a place for people who are aiming for success.

目標があってそれに向かって

With a goal in mind, I'm moving toward it.

もうとにかく頑張ってる人が多かったような印象があります

It gives the impression that there were many people who were just working really hard.

なので、子育てに関しても教育熱心な親が多くてですね

So, there are many highly motivated parents when it comes to raising children.

子供に関してもなんか

About the children, something...

頑張りなさい!っていうような

It's like saying "Do your best!"

感じで接してる人も多かったような感じがあるんですが

It seems like there were quite a few people who interacted in that way.

ハワイの方がもうちょっとリラックスして

Hawaii is a bit more relaxing.

さっき言ったクオリティタイムを一緒に過ごすこととか

Spending quality time together that I mentioned earlier.

自然を楽しむとか

Enjoying nature and so on.

今の幸せをすごく大切にしてるような

It seems like you really cherish your current happiness.

そんな印象があります

I have that impression.

そっか、じゃあ、いい学校に行くとか

I see, so you mean going to a good school or something.

競争に勝つとかっていうよりは

Rather than winning the competition,

ハワイはもっとどちらかというと

Hawaii is more like...

家族の時間を優先したりとか

Prioritizing family time and so on.

自分の幸せにワイトフォーカスしてる

I am focusing on my own happiness.

そうですね

That's right.

最後ですけれども

This is the last one, but...

私が聞きたいことがありまして

I have something I would like to ask.

働き方のことについても

Regarding work styles as well.

ハワイの事情を聞きたいんですが

I would like to hear about the situation in Hawaii.

何か特徴ってありますか?

Do you have any special features?

ハワイに来てびっくりしたことの一つが

One of the things that surprised me when I came to Hawaii was

リタイア組

Retirement group

若くしてリタイアした人たちが

People who retired young

割といるっていうことなんですね

So it means that there are quite a few, huh?

20代前半ぐらいで起業して

Starting a business in my early 20s.

多分10年ぐらいかけてかな

Maybe it will take about 10 years.

成功して

Succeed.

仕事をフルタイムで会社に勤めて

Working full-time at a company.

勤務してますっていうタイプじゃない人たちが

People who are not the type to say they are working.

すごく多くて

It's very much.

すごく多くはないかもしれないけど

It might not be a lot, but...

そういう人たちに出会う機会もあって

I have had the opportunity to meet people like that.

私たちよりずっと下の年代であっても

Even if they are much younger than us.

部屋もセミリタイアなので

Since the room is also semi-retired.

働いてないとか

Not working or something.

ちょっと気が向いた時だけ

Only when I feel like it a little.

自分の持ってる事業のマネジメントをしてます

I am managing my own business.

みたいな

Like that.

そういう保護者がいたりして

There are parents like that.

すごーい

Amazing!

いろんな

働き方の多様性っていうか

It's about the diversity of work styles.

生き方の多様性みたいなのを

Something like the diversity of ways of living.

感じることがありますね

Sometimes you can feel it, can't you?

私今まで生きてきて

I've lived until now.

自分と同年代の方でリタイアしてますって

"People around my age have retired."

あったことないんですよ

I haven't met (them/you) before.

そうなんですよ

That's right.

ニューヨークにいた時

When I was in New York.

もう私自身もそういう人あったこと

I have also met people like that myself.

住んでるエリアとかによるんだろうけどね

It probably depends on the area where you live.

直接知り合いになる機会はなかったんですが

I never had the opportunity to meet them directly.

例えばハワイで子供のスポーツ

For example, children's sports in Hawaii.

習い事の野球とかサッカーのスポーツチームのコーチとか

Coaches of sports teams like baseball or soccer in extracurricular activities.

話をしてみると

When I try to talk,

この人すごい3時とか4時

This person is amazing, like at 3 or 4 o'clock.

夕方3時とか4時の子供の練習に絶対いるんですよ

I definitely have to be there for the kids' practice around 3 or 4 in the evening.

で

どんな仕事してるのかって言うと

When I say what kind of work I'm doing,

なんか何してるのって聞くと

When I ask what you're doing,

いやいやもうリタイアしてるから

No, no, I'm already retired.

働いてないんだって

I hear you’re not working.

すごい

Amazing!

もうなんかメインはボランティアで生きてます

I'm kind of living mainly as a volunteer now.

みたいな人たちがいて

There are people like that.

すごいなニューヨークは

New York is amazing.

これから成功するぞっていう

I'm going to succeed from now on.

家庭の方が多いから

Because there are more families.

あんまりリタイアしてる人って

Not many people retire.

私のね周りにいなかっただけかもしれないんですけど

It might just be that there wasn't anyone around me.

見たことないんですけど

I've never seen it before.

ハワイは割ともう成功してる人が多いんですよ

There are quite a few successful people in Hawaii.

成功したって方が移住するパターンも割と多いんですね

It's quite common for those who have succeeded to move to a different place.

そうですね

That's right.

忙しい仕事が一段落したら

Once my busy work calms down.

温かいところでゆっくりしたいとかって

"I want to relax slowly in a warm place."

やっぱりよく聞くじゃないですか

After all, you often hear that, don't you?

そういう人たちが来る場所の一つが

One of the places where such people come is

ハワイでもあるのかなっていう気がしています

I have a feeling that it might be the same in Hawaii.

なるほどすごいな

I see, that's amazing.

Work styles are diverse, aren’t they?

あとねウーバーのドライバーさんとかも

Also, the Uber drivers, too.

なんかニューヨークのタクシードライバーさんとか

It's like a New York taxi driver or something.

ウーバードライバーさんってサメちゃんどんな印象ですか

What impression do you have of Shark-chan as an Uber driver?

皆さん忙しそうで大変そうなイメージあります

You all seem busy and it looks tough.

そうだよね私もそう

That's right, I feel the same way.

やっぱりなんとなく眉間にシワが寄ってて

Somehow, my brows are furrowed again.

この人結構大変なんだろうなみたいな

I feel like this person is having quite a tough time.

会話もあんまり盛り上がらなかったりとかするんだけど

The conversation didn't really pick up much either.

私ハワイで時々ウーバーを使うんですが

I sometimes use Uber in Hawaii.

みんなね

Everyone, you know?

みんなじゃないよね

It's not everyone, right?

やっぱり生活のためにしてるドライバーさんも

After all, there are drivers who do it for a living too.

たくさんいらっしゃいますが

There are a lot of them.

時々ね

Sometimes, you know.

仕事はウーバードライバーで1日2時間だけしますと

I only work as an Uber driver for 2 hours a day.

でもそれ以外はサーフィンして

But other than that, I'm surfing.

お日様浴びて水で遊んで

Basking in the sun and playing in the water.

日が暮れたらお家に帰って

When the sun goes down, go home.

でまた明日の朝2時間ウーバードライバーするんだ

And then I will be an Uber driver for 2 hours tomorrow morning again.

みたいな人もいて

There are people like that too.

なんか本当にいろんな生き様が見れる

I can really see various ways of life.

めっちゃ自由な人生ですねそれ

That's a really自由な life, isn't it?

そうそう

That's right.

楽しそう

It looks fun.

必ずしもすごい経済的に豊かで

Not necessarily very economically wealthy.

豊かかって言ったらそうじゃないかもしれないけど

It may not be rich, but...

やっぱりなんか好きなことをして

I guess I want to do something I like after all.

自然と触れ合って満たされてるから

Because I am fulfilled by connecting with nature.

表情自体はすごい輝いてたりとかして

The expression itself is really radiant and bright.

面白いなと思って観察してます

I'm observing because I find it interesting.

そっか

I see.

なんかいろんな価値観があって

There are various values.

いろんな生き方があっていいんだなってこと感じますね

I feel that it's okay to have various ways of living.

本当になんか豊かさとか成功とか

Really, something about abundance or success.

そういうのの定義が

The definition of that kind of thing is...

結構覆される場所だなって思います

I think it's a place that can be quite easily overturned.

子育てのね価値観とかも変わっちゃいそうですよね

It seems that the values regarding parenting might change too.

本当にハワイで幸せそうにしてる人たちを見ると

When I see people looking truly happy in Hawaii...

例えば必ずしも高い学歴があったりするわけではないし

For example, it doesn't necessarily mean that they have a high level of education.

いい学校に入るとかってなんだったっけって思う時がある

Sometimes I wonder what it was like to get into a good school.

そんないろんな働き方だったりとか生き方の人を見て

Seeing various ways of working and living people

愛さん自身もいろいろ考えたりとかされてるんですね

Aiko-san is also thinking about various things, isn't she?

そうです

That's right.
