I am Wataru Nakamura, a designer, specifically a graphic designer.

デザインでもいっぱいいろんな世界があると思うんですけども

I think there are many different worlds in design.

その中でもグラフィックデザインというところをやっております

私 デザインという業界が無知でして

I am ignorant about the design industry.

グラフィックデザインというのは 具体的にまた教えてほしいんですけれども

I would like you to tell me more specifically about graphic design.

なるほど グラフィックデザインというのは 言えば商業デザイナー

I see, graphic design can be described as commercial design.

商業デザイナーと言われたものを映像にしてあげる

例えばインテリアデザイン 内装デザインする人

グラフィックというのは主に紙のことを指していて

それをお客さんが言われたものを紙にして 印刷して納品してあげる

I'm feeling a bit unsure about which direction to go now.

多分紙はどんどんなくなっていくだろうということで

グラフィックデザインというのが だんだんだんだん

先すぼみになってくるのかなというところはありますね

これからどう戦えるのか 何を武器にするのかというところですよね

まず一番の魅力的なのは 私たちの作品ですよね

First and foremost, the most captivating aspect is our work, isn't it?

消費者が喜んでくれると

When consumers are happy,

もちろんそうなんですよ

一番はやっぱり僕らはクライアント

Above all, we are the clients.

お客さんが喜んでもらえるかどうかって仕事なんですね

It's a job to see if customers will be happy.

結局お客さんがまだ真っ白な髪を

In the end, the customer still has completely white hair.

お互いにアイデアを出して

Let's exchange ideas with each other.

真っ白な髪を100%色がついたものに仕上げて

Make the pure white hair completely colored.

で 世に出して

その時に世に出すのは当然

消費者が喜んでくれるのももちろんなんですが

やっぱりお客さんが一番喜んでくれないといけないわけで

After all, the customers need to be the ones who are the most pleased.

お客さんがどんだけ喜んでくれるか

How much the customers will be delighted.

で 僕のコンセプトで

コンセプトとしてはいつも言ってるのが

お客さんを笑顔にさせます

I will make the customers smile.

いつもそれを

お客さんにありがとうって言われる仕事をしたい

I want to do a job where customers say thank you.

っていうのを思って

I was thinking about that.

いいですよ 夢があって

なかなかありがとうって言われる商売って

It's a business where it's not easy to be told "thank you."

少ないと思ってて

I think it's少ない.

当然コンビニエンスストアだってももちろん

Of course, convenience stores too.

ありがとうって言ってくれるお客さんもいるけど

Some customers say thank you, but...

どちらかというと当たり前のような世界だったりするけど

It's a world that seems rather obvious, to some extent.

僕お金もらってんのに

I'm getting paid, though.

いいものができたよ

うちの父親も

もともとイラストレーター

Originally an illustrator.

絵描きさん

そこからデザイン会社を立ち上げて

From there, I started a design company.

高校の同級生2人で

Two high school classmates.

デザイン会社を東京で立ち上げて

I started a design company in Tokyo.

で今ちょうど48年

It's been exactly 48 years now.

生まれてから僕は

Since I was born, I have...

デザイナーになるんだろうと

I guess I will become a designer.

勝手に

On your own.

思ったんだけども

I've been thinking, but...

ちょっと僕はあんまり向いてなくて

I'm not really cut out for it.

絵が上手いわけで

It's not that I'm good at drawing.

いいわけでもないし

It's not an excuse.

美術がいいわけでもないし

It's not that the art is good or anything.

文字が書けるわけでもないし

It's not like I can write.

発想力あるわけでもない

I don't have much creativity.

だけども18歳の時に

But when I was 18 years old

専門学校行ってみて

Try going to a vocational school.

やって

Do it.

ただその時っていうのがちょうど

Just that timing was just right.

コンピューターと

With the computer and

手書きの狭間の時で

In the gap of handwritten time.

まだマッキントッシュが

The Macintosh is still...

日本にそんな入ってきてない時で

At a time when it hadn't come into Japan much.

勉強したのは結局

In the end, what I studied was...

手書きで勉強しちゃったんだけども

I studied by hand, though.

全く今もう意味がない

It has no meaning at all now.

マックでできてしまう

You can do it at McDonald's.

イラストレーターとかないので

I don't have an illustrator or anything like that.

みんな

Everyone

作らなきゃいけない

I have to make it.

その過渡期でちょうど

Just at that transitional period.

結局はもう一回学校行って

In the end, I have to go to school one more time.

マッキントッシュの学校行って勉強して

I went to Macintosh school and studied.

それで就職した感じなんですけども

So I feel like I got a job because of that.

なんかもう当たり前のように

It's almost as if it's taken for granted.

小さい頃から

Since I was little.

デザイナーになるんだろうと思いながら

I think I will become a designer.

一回やったら

If you do it once,

苦しいことって

Difficult things

そのセンスがないっていうか

It's not that you lack that sense, but...

絵が描けたりとか

Like being able to draw pictures.

そういう一人かも

I might be one of those people.

ずば抜けたものがあるわけではなかったから

There wasn't anything outstanding.

やっぱり苦労はするんですけども

After all, it is indeed hard work, but...

ただやっぱりさっき僕最初に言った

But still, what I mentioned earlier is...

お客さんが

The customer is

やっぱり喜んでくれたときも

After all, when they were happy too.

あの感じが忘れられなくて

I can't forget that feeling.

もう早何年だろう

How many years has it been now?

30年とか

Like 30 years.

デジタルの方に移行していかなきゃいけない

We have to transition to digital.

ただデザインっていうのは

It's just that design is...

多分なくならないと思うんですよ

I don't think it will probably go away.

ただ価値は下がると思うんですね

I just think the value will decrease.

じゃあそこと差別化をさせるために

提案してあげるとか

やっぱり僕今デザインにあんまり力を入れてるわけじゃなくて

I still don't really put much effort into design right now.

どちらかというとデレクションの方

Rather, it's more about direction.

僕は全部ハンドリングして

As I thought, having friends who help me is great.

なんとかプレゼン取って納品することができた
