昔々ある家のお蔵の中に

お米を持って麦を持って泡を持って豆を持って

Holding rice, holding wheat, holding bubbles, holding beans.

大層豊かに暮らしている

Living very richly.

お金持ちの人たちが

Wealthy people

ネズミが住んでおりました

There was a mouse living there.

子供がないので神様にお願いしますと

"Since I don't have children, I ask God."

やっと女の子が生まれました

A girl has finally been born.

その子はずんずん大きくなって

That child is growing up rapidly.

輝くほど美しくなって

Become beautifully radiant.

それはネズミのお国で誰一人比べるもののない

That is something unmatched by anyone in the land of the mice.

日本一のいい娘になりました

I became the best girl in Japan.

こうなるともうネズミの仲間には

At this point, it's no longer just among the rats.

見渡したところ

As I looked around.

とても娘のお婿さんにするようなものはありませんでした

There was nothing that could be considered suitable for my daughter’s husband.

ネズミのお父さんとお母さんは

The mouse's father and mother are

うちの娘は日本一の娘なのだから

"My daughter is the best daughter in Japan."

なんでも日本一のお婿さんをもらわなければならない

I must marry the best son-in-law in Japan, no matter what.

と言いました

そこでこの世の中で誰が一番偉いかというと

So, who is the greatest in this world?

それは高い高い空の上から

That is from way up high in the sky.

世界中を明るく照らしておられるような

思い出になるお日様の他にはありませんでした

そこでお父さんはお母さんと娘を連れて

天へ登っていきました

あなたは世の中で一番偉いお方です

You are the most important person in the world.

どうぞ私の娘を嫁にもらってくださいまし

Please take my daughter as your bride.

と言って丁寧にお辞儀をしました

Saying this, they politely bowed.

するとお父さんはお母さんに

Then Dad said to Mom.

お日様はニコニコなさりながら

The sun is smiling.

それはありがたいが

That's appreciated, but...

世の中には私よりもっと偉いものがあるよ

There are things in the world that are greater than me.

とおっしゃいました

You said so.

お父さんはびっくりしました

Dad was surprised.

まああなたよりも偉い方があるのですか

Well, is there someone greater than you?

それはどなたでございますか

Who is that?

それはクモさ

That's a spider.

私がいくら空でカンカン照っていようと思っても

No matter how much I think the sky is blazing bright.

クモが出てくるともうダメになるのだからね

Once a spider appears, it's already hopeless.

なるほど

I see.

お父さんはそこで

Dad is there.

今度はクモのところへ出かけました

This time, I went to the spider's place.

Spider, spider

あなたは世の中で一番偉いお方です

You are the most esteemed person in the world.

どうぞ私の娘を嫁にもらってくださいまし

Please take my daughter as your bride.

それはありがたいが

I appreciate it, but...

世の中には私よりもっと偉いお方がいるのです

There are people in the world who are greater than I am.

お父さんはびっくりしました

Dad was surprised.

まああなたよりも偉い方があるのですか

Well, is there someone greater than you?

それはどなたでございますか

Who is that?

それは風さ

That is the wind.

風に吹き飛ばされては私もかなわないよ

I can't help but be blown away by the wind too.

なるほど

I see.

お父さんはそこで

Dad is there.

今度は風のところへ出かけていきました

This time, I went out to where the wind is.

風さん風さん

Mr. Wind, Mr. Wind.

あなたはどうでしょうか

あなたは世の中で一番偉いお方です

You are the most important person in the world.

どうぞ私の娘をお嫁にもらってくださいまし

お父さんはびっくりしました

まああなたよりも偉い方があるのですか

それはどなたでございますか

それは壁さ

That is a wall.

壁ばかりは私のことです

"It's only the wall that is about me."

私の力でもとても吹き飛ばすことはできないからね

I can't blow it away even with my power.

お父さんはそこでまた

のこどこ壁のところへ出かけていきました

He went out to the wall in the corner.

あなたは世の中で一番偉いお方です

どうぞうちの娘をお嫁にもらってくださいまし

Please take my daughter in marriage.

それはありがたいが

That is appreciated, but...

あなたはどうでしょうか

世の中には私よりもっと偉いものがあるよ

お父さんはびっくりしました

Dad was surprised.

そういうネズミさんさ

私がいくら真四角な顔をして

No matter how square my face is,

固くなって

Becoming stiff.

頑張っていても

Even if you're trying hard

ネズミさんは

Mr. Mouse is

平気で私の体を食い破って

"Calmly tearing apart my body."

穴を開けて

Make a hole.

通り抜けていくじゃないか

Aren't you passing through?

だから私は

So I...

どうしてもネズミさんにはかなわないよ

I just can't compete with the mouse.

なるほど

I see.

とネズミのお父さんは

And the mouse's father is

今度こそ本当に

As if genuinely impressed.

ぽんと手を打って

これは今まで気づかなかったのか

とニコニコしながら

While smiling happily

威張って帰っていきました

He left, full of himself.

そして帰ると早速

And as soon as I got home

お隣の中助ネズミを

The neighboring middle-helper mouse.

娘のおむこさんにしました

I made my daughter’s fiancé.

若いおむこさんとお嫁さんは

The young bride and groom are

仲良く暮らして

Live together in harmony.

お父さんとお母さんを

Mom and Dad.

大事にしてくれたのです

You took good care of it.

大事にしました

I took good care of it.

そしてたくさんの子供を産んで

And then give birth to many children.

オクラのネズミの一家は
