태풍이 온 날 새벽에 바람소리가 너무너무 시끄러워서 잠을 잘 잘 수가 없었어요.

On the morning of the day the typhoon came, the sound of the wind was so extremely loud that I couldn't sleep at all.

다음날 아침에 출근하러 길에 나왔는데 나무가 막 쓰러져 있고 가을호수가 누워있고 도로가 패여있더라고요.

The next morning, when I went out to go to work, there were trees fallen over, autumn leaves lying down, and the road was damaged.

굉장히 좀 낯선 그런 풍경이었습니다.

It was quite a strange landscape.

또 하필 제가 그 전날 아저씨라는 영화를 봤는데 뭔가 그 영화와 현실이 복잡하게 교차되는 그런 기분이었습니다.

Moreover, I had just watched a movie called "Uncle" the day before, and it felt like the movie and reality were intricately intertwining.

영화에서나 나올 법한 나무가 쓰러져 있는 장면이었어요.

It was a scene where a tree that looked like it came out of a movie was fallen.

장면을 실제 내 눈으로 보니까 그랬던 것 같아요.

I think that's how it was when I actually saw the scene with my own eyes.

그래서 왠지 쓰러진 나무 위로 저 멀리서 원빈이 막 달려와서 누군가와 막 싸움을 할 것 같은 그런 그림이 그려졌습니다.

So, it somehow painted a picture in my mind of Won Bin running from afar over the fallen tree and about to fight someone.

또 막 비오는 그 거리 사이로 까만 양복을 입은 아저씨들이 우르르 몰려와서 칼을 들고 제가 타고 있는 차를 뺏을 것 같은 그런 기분도 좀 들었고요.

It also felt a bit like a crowd of men in black suits were rushing in between the streets where the rain was pouring, ready to snatch the car I was in with their knives.

이렇게 말도 안 되는 상상을 가능케 하는 그런 날씨입니다.

It's a kind of weather that makes such ridiculous imaginations possible.

이렇게 말할 수 없죠.

I can't say it like that.

이렇게 우중충한 날씨의 기분을 벗삼아 이번 주 ESC는 커버스토리로 복수를 다뤘습니다.

This week's ESC covered revenge as its cover story, inspired by the gloomy weather.

요즘 대중문화의 화두라고도 할 수 있는 이 복수 얘기를 저희 다음 메인 코너에서 다뤄보도록 하겠습니다.

We will address this story of revenge, which can be said to be a hot topic in popular culture these days, in our next main segment.

제가 자체 조사를 해본 결과 올해 8월까지 방영됐거나 방영 중인 드라마 50편 중에 이 복수를 전면 내세웠거나 혹은 복수 코드를 사용한 드라마는 13편이 넘더라고요.

As a result of my own investigation, I found that among the 50 dramas that aired or are currently airing until August of this year, more than 13 dramas prominently featured revenge or used revenge motifs.

나쁜 남자는 복수 자체가 굉장히 큰 설정 중에 하나였고 황금물고기도 마찬가지고요.

The bad guy's revenge was one of the major setups, and the same goes for the golden fish.

또 자이언트라는 드라마에서는 죽은 아버지에 대한 복수를 하기 위한 그런 성공 과정을 그리고 있죠.

In the drama "Giant," it depicts the process of success in seeking revenge for a deceased father.

또 구미호 여우 누이전도 그랬고요.

Also, the story of the nine-tailed fox sister was like that.

또 신리라 불리우는 사나이 이 약간은 황당한 드라마 역시 복수극이었습니다.

The man also known as Shin Ri, this somewhat absurd drama was indeed a revenge story.

검사 프린세스와 추노에도 복수를 찾아볼 수가 있었죠.

In "Princess Prosecutor" and "Chuno," revenge can also be found.

영화 쪽도 마찬가지입니다.

한여, 한여를 보신 분들은 알겠지만 맨 마지막에 전도연의 굉장히 살신 성인식의 어떤 그런 복수를 볼 수 있고요.

또 이끼와 파괴된 사나이 또 아저씨 같은 올해 대표작들에도 이제 복수를 다루고 있습니다.

이렇게 요즘에 정말 넘치고 넘치는 복수극을 보면서 2000년대 들어서 그러니까 최근 10년 동안 우리가 봐온 수많은 복수극과 그 안에 복수를 해온 그런 인물들을 한번 정리해보는 그런 기획은 어떨까라는 생각이 들어서

These days, while watching the overflowing revenge dramas, I've been thinking it's worth organizing and summarizing the numerous revenge dramas we've seen over the past decade since the 2000s and the characters who have sought revenge within them.

이번 커버스토리를 준비를 해봤습니다.

I have prepared this cover story.

아마도.

우리에게 가장 기억에 남고 생생한 복수의 아이콘이라고 한다면 아무래도 SBS 드라마 청춘의 도사에 나왔던 심은하겠죠.

If we were to talk about the most memorable and vivid icon of revenge, it would definitely be Shim Eun-ha from the SBS drama "Youth's Master."

윤희 역을 맡았던 심은하가 이종원, 불륜 전문배우라고도 불리는 이종원을 향해서 당신 부숴버릴 거야 이랬던 이 대사는 지금까지 10년이 넘게 이 드라마가 방영된 게 1999년이니까 거의 10년이 훨씬 넘도록 늘 드라마에서 회자되고 있는.

Shim Eun-ha, who played the role of Yoon-hee, directed the line "I’m going to crush you" towards Lee Jong-won, who is also referred to as an affair specialist actor. This line has been mentioned in the drama for over a decade, since the drama aired in 1999, making it more than 10 years that it has continually been recalled in the series.

그런 굉장히 강렬한 복수의 대사입니다.

It's a very intense line about revenge.

그래서 1999년 이 대사를 시작으로 2000년대 들어서는 이 어떤 윤희 그러니까 심은하가 맡은 이 윤희의 또 다른 여러 그 윤희의 그 수많은 친구 같은 그런 역할들 그런 인물들이 드라마 속에 많이 등장을 했습니다.

So starting from this dialogue in 1999, throughout the 2000s, many characters similar to Yunhee, played by Shim Eun-ha, appeared frequently in dramas, depicting her various friends and roles.

그중에 가장 인상 깊었던 건 또 하나 인상 깊었던 어떤 그런 인물은 인어 아가씨.

Among them, the most impressive one was the mermaid girl.

인어 아가씨 다들 기억을 하실 거예요.

Everyone will remember the mermaid lady.

2002년 그때 매일 1일 드라마로 방영이 됐었는데 이때 매일 저녁 어머님들을 TV앞으로 그냥 바로바로 빨아들였던 그런 드라마였죠.

In 2002, it was aired as a daily drama and it was a show that instantly captivated mothers in front of the TV every evening.

이 드라마에서는 그 은아리영 장서희가 맡았던 은아리영이 자신과 어머니를 버린 아버지에게 복수를 하려고 아버지가 재혼해서 낳은 딸의 약혼자를 유혹을 합니다.

In this drama, the character Eun Ah-ri, played by Jang Seo-hee, tries to take revenge on her father, who abandoned her and her mother, by seducing the fiancé of her father's daughter from his remarriage.

다들 기억을 하시겠지만 유혹하는 과정에서.

As everyone surely remembers, during the process of temptation.

이 은아리영이 그야말로 만능 팔방미인으로 그려집니다.

This Eun-Ari-Young is truly depicted as a万能 (all-rounder) and a talented beauty in every aspect.

어느 날 막 드라마를 연주하고 갑자기 살사댄스를 막 추다가 또 국선도를 막 하기도 하고 동시에 굉장히 잘 나가는 드라마 작가이기도 하고 또 요리도 잘하고 정말 못하는 게 없는 그런 여자였는데요.

One day, she was suddenly performing a drama, then dancing salsa, practicing Gukseondo, and at the same time, she was a very successful drama writer, also good at cooking, truly a woman who excelled at everything.

그래서 이 은아리영이 결국에는 주왕이 그러니까 정말 오랜만에 들어도 참 친숙한 이름이죠.

So this Eunari-yeong, in the end, is Ju-wang, which is indeed a very familiar name even after a long time.

주왕씨.

Mr. Zhou Wang.

주왕씨를 유혹해서 결국에는 결혼을 하고 결국 자기 방식으로 복수를 합니다.

She seduces Ju-wang and eventually marries him, and in the end, takes her revenge in her own way.

그렇지만 얼핏 그 복수에 성공한 듯 보이나 맨 마지막 결말은 은아리영이 자동차 사고로 목숨을 잃는 그런 설정이었습니다.

However, although it seems that the revenge was successful at first glance, the final conclusion was that Eun-Ari-Young lost her life in a car accident.

그 목숨을 잃게 되는 가장 큰 것 중에 하나는 이 복수를 하는 과정에서 어쩔 수 없이 희생양을 삼았던 그런 사람들에 대한 죄책감이라고 볼 수 있었는데요.

One of the biggest reasons for losing that life can be seen as the guilt towards those who were inevitably sacrificed in the process of exacting this revenge.

결국 그렇게 해서 은아리영은 이렇게 만능 복수 음원으로서의 꿈을 다 펼치긴 했지만 결국 그 복수로 인해 스스로가 희생당하는 그런 결과를 났습니다.

In the end, Eunari-young fulfilled her dream of becoming a versatile revenge audio source, but ultimately, that revenge led to her own sacrifice as a result.

또 그 이후에 은아리영이 굉장히 신드롬식의 드라마였는데 은아리영 이후에 또 비슷한 캐릭터를 가진 드라마들이 쭉 나오다가

After that, Eunari Young was a very syndrome-like drama, and after Eunari Young, many dramas with similar characters continued to come out.

그 다음에 또 가장 히트를 쳤던 드라마는 다들 또 기억을 하실 텐데 아내의 유혹이라는 드라마입니다.

The next drama that had the biggest hit, which I'm sure everyone remembers, is a drama called "The Temptation of Wife."

이 드라마는 또 가장 주목할 만한 점이 은아리영이었던 장서희 씨가 또 비슷한 캐릭터의 복수의 캐릭터로 돌아왔다는 거였는데요.

One of the most notable aspects of this drama is that Jang Seo-hee, who played Eun Ah-ri-young, has returned as a similar character seeking revenge.

이 구은재라는 이 여인은 굉장히 착하고 남편만을 바라보는 그런 여인인데 이 남편이 교빈이가 정교빈이 바람이 나서 그 여자와의 인생을 위해서 은재를 죽이려고 하고

This woman named Eun-jae is very kind and devoted only to her husband, but her husband, Kyobin, is having an affair with Jung Kyobin and is trying to kill Eun-jae for the sake of his life with that woman.

사실 은재가 죽은 줄 알고 있죠.

Actually, I know that Eunjai is dead.

하지만 사실 이 불멸의 구은재는 죽지 않고 살아있었고 그 이후에 이 전남편 교빈에게 복수를 하려고 민소희라는 이름으로 살아갑니다.

However, in fact, this immortal creature did not die and has since been living under the name Min So-hee, intending to take revenge on her ex-husband, Kyo-bin.

물론 그 민소희가 되는 과정은 간단하게 눈 밑에 점 하나 찍는 것이었다는 거 또 기억을 하실 거예요.

재밌었던 거는 이 구은재라는 캐릭터 그러니까 민소희, 이 민소희라는 캐릭터는 은아리영의 어떤 재림 같았다는 건데요.

민소희는 은아리영이 그랬듯이 춤도 좋았고.

그림도 잘 추고 그림도 잘 그리고 수영도 잘하고 못하는 게 없는 역시 만능 복수의 어떤 화신이었습니다.

They were indeed a perfect embodiment of versatility, excelling at both drawing and swimming, and having no shortcomings.

이 은재의 복수는 정말 막장도 이 정도면 예술이다라는 평을 받으면서 정말 높은 시청률을 기록을 했습니다.

Eun-jae's revenge received comments that it is truly a work of art at this level of drama, achieving very high ratings.

그리고 이 아내의 유혹이 종영한 지 5개월 만에 같은 작가가 쓴 천사의 유혹이라는 드라마가 전파를 탔습니다.

Five months after the end of "The Temptation of Wife," a drama titled "The Temptation of Angel," written by the same author, was broadcast.

이 천사의 유혹은 그 아내의 유혹의 업그레이드판이나 다름이 없었는데요.

The temptation of this angel was nothing different from an upgraded version of his wife's temptation.

그래서 여자 주인공 구은재가 남편을 죽이려고 하는 것입니다.

So the female protagonist, Gu Eun-jae, is trying to kill her husband.

그래서 이 아내의 유혹이 종영한 지 5개월 만에 같은 작가가 쓴 천사의 유혹이라는 드라마가 전파를 탔습니다.

Therefore, five months after the conclusion of "The Wife's Temptation," a drama written by the same author titled "Angel's Temptation" aired.

남자로 바뀌었고 또 이 점 하나 찍고 이제 사람 다른 사람이 되는 정도가 아니라

I have changed into a man, and it's not just a matter of this one point; it’s about becoming a completely different person.

아예 그 얼굴을 바꾸는 성형수술을 통해서 다른 사람으로 변신한다는 거였죠.

It meant transforming into a different person through cosmetic surgery that completely changes the face.

그래서 다른 얼굴로 변해서 자신을 버린 그런 상대를 또 유혹해서 복수한다는 점.

So, the point is to seduce and take revenge on someone who has transformed into a different face and abandoned themselves.

이런 설정은 이 아내의 유혹과 크게 다르지 않았습니다.

This setup was not much different from the temptation of this wife.

그런데 가장 차별화됐던 점은 바로 이 복수의 시진제를 도입을 했다는 건데요.

However, what was most differentiated was the introduction of this multiple time system.

이 아내의 유혹에서는 그 진짜 민소희가 돌아왔습니다.

In "The Temptation of Wife," the real Min So-hee has returned.

돌아와서 또 다시 한 번 구은재에게 복수를 하는데

When I come back, I take revenge on Gu Eun-jae once more.

이런 이마악과 다름없는 복수의 내용이 중반 이후에 다뤄졌습니다.

그런데 이 천사의 유혹에서는 아버지에 대한 복수를 하는 여자 주인공의 복수가 초반에 진행이 됐고

그 이후에 중반으로 가면서 이 여자 주인공에게 복수를 하는 또 다른 얼굴을 바꾼 남자의 이야기가 중반 이후로 극을 이끌어갔습니다.

After that, the story shifted in the second half to focus on another man with a changed face who seeks revenge on the female protagonist.

이렇게 복수를 하고 그 복수에 또 다시 복수를 하는...

To seek revenge like this, and then to take revenge on that revenge...

그야말로 복수의 시즌 1, 시즌 2가 같은 드라마에서 진행되는 그런 복수의 시즌제를 열은 게 바로 천사의 유혹이었습니다.

"Indeed, 'Temptation of Angels' was the one that opened the seasonal revenge format where Season 1 and Season 2 take place in the same drama."

지난달 종영한 드라마가 한 편 있죠.

There was a drama that ended last month.

나쁜 남자라는 드라마인데 이 드라마에서는 또 천사의 유혹에 이어서 복수를 위해 여자를 유혹하는 남자가 등장했습니다.

It's a drama called "Bad Guys," and in this drama, there's a man who tempts women for revenge, following the temptation of an angel.

바로 김남길이 맡았던 심건욱이라는 역할이었는데요.

It was the role of Shim Geon-wook that Kim Nam-gil played.

심건욱은 자신을 버리고 그 어머니와 아버지를 죽음에 이르게 한 재벌가의 복수를 하겠고

Shim Geon-wook vowed to take revenge on the conglomerate that abandoned him and led his mother and father to their deaths.

이 복수를 하기 위해서 정말 굉장히 기발한 방법을 생각을 해냅니다.

To carry out this revenge, they come up with a truly brilliant plan.

뭐냐면 다다익선 그야말로 재벌가의 딸 둘을 동시에 유혹을 하는 건데요.

What I'm saying is that it's a case of "the more, the better," as it involves seducing two daughters of a conglomerate family at the same time.

그래서 재벌가의 딸인 테라와 모네 이 두 자매를 동시에 유혹을 합니다.

So, he simultaneously seduces the two sisters, Terra, the daughter of a chaebol family, and Mone.

정말 대단한 활약이었죠.

It was truly a remarkable performance.

같은 공간에서 두 여자에게 동시에 눈빛을 막 던지는 김남길의 연기는 참 인상 깊었습니다.

Kim Nam-gil's performance, simultaneously throwing glances at two women in the same space, was truly impressive.

그렇지만 이 드라마에서 역시 복수를 하려고 했던 이 건욱이라는 주인공은 결국에는 또 복수의 스스로가 희생이 되어서 죽음을 맞이하고 맙니다.

However, in this drama, the protagonist, Geon-wook, who tried to take revenge, ultimately becomes a victim of his own revenge and meets his demise.

또 요즘에 방영 중인 황금물고기라는 드라마가 또 있는데 이 드라마가 또 참 인상적입니다.

There's also a drama currently airing called "Golden Fish," and it's truly impressive.

이 드라마는 지금까지 나왔던 많은 복수의 드라마에서 어떤 재미있는 장점만 쏙쏙 뽑아서 만든 드라마라고 해도 과언이 아닌데요.

This drama can be described as one that skillfully extracts the interesting advantages from many revenge dramas that have come out so far.

먼저 아까 천사였죠.

You were an angel earlier.

드라마 유혹처럼 시신제 복수국을 이끌어가고 있어요.

드라마 초반에는 자신의 어머니를 죽음으로 몰고 간 자기 수양어머니와 수양아버지에게 복수를 하려고

그다음에는 바로 또 이 태영에 대한 지민 그러니까는 이 태영이 버린 그 여자의 복수가 이어집니다.

Next, the story continues with Ji-min's revenge on Tae-young, the woman that Tae-young abandoned.

자신을 버린 이 남자에게 복수를 하려고 20대 아직 20대인 지민이라는 캐릭터가 선택한 방법이 뭐냐면

The method chosen by the character Jimin, who is still in her 20s, to take revenge on this man who abandoned her is what?

바로 이 태영의 장모가 되는 거예요.

It's exactly becoming Tae-young's mother-in-law.

이 드라마를 안 보신 분들은 좀 황당해하실 수도 있는데

Those who haven't seen this drama might find it a bit absurd.

어쨌거나 이 지민이라는 캐릭터는 태영의 어떤 장인어른과 결혼을 해서

Anyway, this character Jimin is married to Taeyoung's father-in-law.

자그마치 20살이 훨씬 넘게 차이가 나는 장인과 결혼을 해서 자기가 사랑했던 남자의 장모가 됩니다.

대단하죠.

That's amazing.

또 하나 또 재미있는 거는 아직 30여 회가 남았는데

또 이 태영과 사랑 없이 결혼을 한 이 현진이라는 소유진이 맡고 있는 이 캐릭터가

막상 그걸 보고 있는 우리는 저걸 지금 복수라고 하는 건가 싶기도 하고

모든 상황이 너무너무너무 억지스럽다는 생각을 하면서도

동시에 또 계속 보게 된다는 거 그게 바로 이런 복수곡

At the same time, the fact that I continue to see this is exactly what this kind of revenge song is about.

약간 막장식의 복수곡 복수 드라마의 특징인 것 같기도 합니다.

It seems like a characteristic of revenge dramas with a somewhat outrageous revenge plot.

영화에서는 드라마보다 훨씬 더 깊게 복수의 이야기를 다룹니다.

The movie delves into the story of revenge much more deeply than the drama.

단지 그냥 어떤 개인의 어떤 곡절 많은 인생사를 보여주는 정도가 아니라

It's not just about showing the tumultuous life story of an individual.

이 사회라는 시스템 속에서 개인이 어떻게 희생이 되고

How individuals are sacrificed within the system of this society.

또 그런 어떤 희생에 대한 페이백을 어떻게 시스템 속에서 하는지

And how to repay such sacrifices within the system.

그런 부분 어떤 그런 연관성을 주로 주목을 하고

I mainly focus on those aspects and their connections.

그런 점을 영화라는 어떤 이 미디어를 통해서 보여주는데요.

It shows such aspects through a medium called film.

영화에서 가장 대표적인 복수의 아이콘은

뭐니뭐니 해도 박찬욱 감독의 복수 3부작에 등장한

이 영화 속에서는 한 어눌한 남녀가

그런데 이 사고로 의도치 않게 이 여자아이는 죽게 되죠.

그래서 이 여자아이의 아버지인 이 송강호 동진이

복수의 바다로 뛰어듭니다.

결국 또 역시 복수에 의해서 희생되는 그런 모습을 볼 수가 있습니다.

In the end, we can see that such a figure is again sacrificed due to revenge.

그리고 그 다음에 두 번째 영화는 올드보이였죠.

And then the second movie was Oldboy.

2003년에 개봉을 했던 거였는데요.

It was released in 2003.

여기서는 최민식이 맡았던 오대수가

그 영화에서 복수의 칼날을 겨눕습니다.
