코로나19 사태로 온 세계인이 방에서 지내는 시간이 많아졌죠.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, people all over the world are spending more time at home.

그래서 굉장히 영화를 보시는 분들 드라마 보시는 분들이 늘어나고 있는데

So there are increasingly more people watching movies and dramas.

그런 속에 은근히 이 킹덤이 전 세계적으로 흥행몰이 중입니다.

Amidst that, this kingdom is subtly becoming a worldwide hit.

킹덤 시즌2는 2019년 넷플릭스에 오른 작품 가운데 한국 내에서 가장 인기를 끌었던 작품이었죠.

Kingdom Season 2 was the most popular work among those that premiered on Netflix in 2019 in South Korea.

전 세계적으로도 상당한 인기를 끌었고 뉴욕타임즈가 선정한 2019 최고의 인터내셔널 TV쇼 탑10에 꼽히기도 했습니다.

It gained significant popularity worldwide and was selected as one of the Top 10 International TV Shows of 2019 by The New York Times.

이런 속에 지난 3월 13일 시즌2가 공개가 된 거고요.

In the midst of this, Season 2 was released on March 13th.

하루에 다 보셨다는 분 많습니다. 저도 그랬습니다.

Many people say they watched it all in one day. I did too.

최근에 코로나19.

Recently, COVID-19.

코로나19 사태와 맞물리면서 이거 코로나19 실사판 아니냐. 평행이론이다.

Isn't this like a real-life version of COVID-19 due to the pandemic? It's a parallel theory.

이런 평가까지 나오고 있습니다. 그래서 선택해봤습니다.

Such evaluations are emerging. That's why I chose this.

코로나가 좀비를 만들지는 않으니까.

The coronavirus doesn’t turn people into zombies.

그렇죠.

That's right.

이게 좀비 드라마 아닙니까 그렇죠?

Isn't this a zombie drama? Right?

그렇습니다. 좀비가 등장하는 호러, 스릴러 이런 장르에 속하는 작품이라고 볼 수 있겠는데요.

That's right. It can be seen as a work that falls under the genres of horror and thriller featuring zombies.

조선시대 사람들이 좀비로 변하는 역병이 돌죠. 임금까지 좀비로 변한 그런 상황에서 세자가 그 역병을 의도적으로 퍼뜨려서 좀비를 만들어내고 또 그것을 자신들의 권력 유지에 활용하려고 하는 그런 세도가를 처단하고 역병도 치유하는 그런 과정을 그린 드라마입니다.

During the Joseon Dynasty, a plague causes people to turn into zombies. In a situation where even the king has turned into a zombie, the crown prince deliberately spreads the plague to create more zombies and seeks to eliminate the powerful aristocrats who are using it to maintain their power, while also healing the plague. This is the storyline of the drama.

이 사극과 좀비를 결합시킨 한국형 좀비 드라마. 조선 좀비 드라마. 이렇게 또 불리기도 하죠.

A Korean-style zombie drama that combines historical drama and zombies. It is also referred to as a Joseon zombie drama.

영화 창궐이 이제 조선 좀비의 한 전형을 만들어냈다. 이런 얘기도 있는데 그하고 개통이 좀 비슷하면서 분위기도 비슷한 그런 드라마입니다.

The movie "Kingdom" has now created a prototype for Joseon zombies. There is also talk that it is a drama that is somewhat similar in terms of storyline and atmosphere.

시즌 1 나올 때는 그래서 창궐의 내용과 킹덤의 내용이 섞여서 기억이 날 때도 있고.

When Season 1 came out, sometimes I remember things mixed between the content of "Kingdom" and "Rampant."

그렇죠. 가끔 혼란이 약간 오기도 합니다.

That's right. Sometimes there can be a bit of confusion.

그런데 어떤 점에서 코로나19 실사판이라는 평가가 나왔을까요?

So, in what way has it been evaluated as a real-life version of COVID-19?

그렇죠. 서민들이 역병에 시달리고 좀비로 변하는 그 와중에도 세도가들의 관심은 오로지 권력 유지에 있죠.

That's right. While the common people suffer from the plague and turn into zombies, the aristocrats' interest is solely in maintaining their power.

좀비와 역병이 통제 가능하다. 이런 착각을 합니다. 그러면서 좀비로 변한 임금도 가둬서 기르기도 하고 일부러 역병을 또 퍼뜨리기도 하고.

Zombies and the plague can be controlled. This is a misconception. While doing so, they also lock away the king who has turned into a zombie to raise him, and intentionally spread the plague again.

심지어 이용도 하고. 그렇죠. 좀비를 풀어서 정적을 또 제거하려고 시도하기도 하고. 그런데 결국 자신들도 좀비에 물려서 또 좀비로 변하고.

They even use them. Right. They try to release the zombies to remove the silence. But in the end, they end up getting bitten by zombies and turning into zombies themselves.

이런 내용들이 나오는데요. 코로나19가 세계적으로 유행하는 과정에서 각국 지도자들이 보이는 다양한 대응 형태, 세세, 태도 이런 거하고 좀 많이 흡사하다.

These kinds of contents are emerging. They are quite similar to the various responses, details, and attitudes displayed by leaders of each country during the global pandemic of COVID-19.

그런 지적이 좀 나오고 있는 상황인 거죠.

That's the situation where such criticisms are coming up.

정말 초반에 안약이 대응하다가 지금 현재 곤란해진 많은 지도자들이 떠오르네요.

I recall many leaders who initially responded well to the eye drops but are now in a difficult position.

트럼프 대통령은 요즘 표정도 바뀌었어요.

President Trump’s expression has changed these days.

네. 대표적으로 트럼프 대통령 많이 얘기를 하죠.

Yes. We often talk about President Trump as a representative example.

그리고 미국에서 확진자가 처음 나온 날이 갔습니다. 사실은.

And the day the first confirmed case appeared in the United States has come. In fact.

그렇죠. 그런데 그 이후에 대응이 상당히 갈렸죠.

That's right. However, the responses varied significantly after that.

우리 정부는 과잉 대응이라고 할 정도로 적극적으로 굉장히 공격적으로 검사를 했고 그래서 초기 확진자가 급증했지만 최근에는 소강 상태를 유지하고 있습니다.

Our government conducted tests very aggressively, to the extent that it could be called an overreaction, which led to a sharp increase in early confirmed cases, but recently the situation has been stabilized.

그 반면에 트럼프 대통령은 적극 대응을 회피했습니다.

On the other hand, President Trump avoided proactive responses.

그 이유가 과연 뭐였을까 이렇게 좀 돌이켜보면.

I wonder what the reason was when I reflect on it like this.

요즘에 이제 대선 기간이잖아요. 본인의 재선 가도에 미칠 악영향 이런 것들을 좀 우려했던 거 아닌가 싶어요.

These days, it's the presidential election period. I think there were concerns about the negative impact it might have on one's re-election path.

경제적인 측면 특히 강하죠.

It's particularly strong in economic aspects.

그렇죠. 주식시장이 자칫 또 이것도 폭락하는 거 아닌가 뭔지 그런 것도 있고 그래서 이제 좀 실상을 감추려 했던 거 아니냐라고 하는 얘기가 많이 나옵니다.

That's right. There are concerns that the stock market might crash again, and because of that, there are many discussions suggesting that they might have tried to hide the reality a bit.

그런데 감염 확산되고 병원 현장의 전문가들이 검사 필요성 지속적으로 강조를 하고 그러면서 적극적인 대응으로 이제 태도를 바꾼 거고.

However, as the infection spreads and experts in the hospital setting continuously emphasize the need for testing, they have now changed their approach to an active response.

막상 검사에 돌입했습니다.

The inspection has finally begun.

돌입하고 보니 연일 확진자가 폭증세를 보이는 이런 또 현상이 나타나고 있어요.

As we have entered, we are witnessing a phenomenon where the number of confirmed cases is explosively increasing day by day.

그만큼 사실은 환자들이 많이 발생했는데 은폐되어 있었다. 이렇게 이제 봐야 되는 거죠.

The truth is that many patients have emerged, but it has been concealed. This is how it needs to be viewed now.

트럼프 입장에서는 우리나라가 상당히 짜증날 것 같아요.

From Trump's perspective, our country must be quite annoying.

초기에는 너무 거세게 검사를 해 가지고 지금 한국에서는 좀 오버한다 이렇게 얘기를 했는데.

At first, the inspection was too intense, so now in Korea, they say it’s a bit excessive.

그렇죠.

That's right.

그게 맞았다는 결과가 요즘 보이기 시작하니까 더더욱 본인이 궁지에 몰리잖아요.

As the results showing that it was correct are starting to appear these days, it puts him even more in a tight spot.

네. 그러면서 한국하고 비교해 가지고 자꾸.

Yes. And while doing that, they keep comparing it to Korea.

그렇죠.

비판을 많이 하니까 이제 약간 좀 빈정이 좀 상하신 거 아닌가 이런 생각도 좀 들어요.

I wonder if you might be feeling a bit hurt since you've received a lot of criticism.

그 와중에 결국 본인도 검사를 했어요?

In the meantime, did you end up getting tested yourself?

네. 그렇습니다.

그러니까 트럼프 대통령의 코로나19에 대한 대응 초기 대응은 뭐 줄곧 별것도 아니다.

So, President Trump's initial response to COVID-19 was not significant at all.

뭐 이런 식이었어요. 그렇죠? 독감보다 못하다. 이런 얘기도 했고.

It was something like this, right? It's worse than the flu. We even talked about that.

맞습니다. 그러니까요.

미국인의 위험은 매우 낮다. 이렇게 또 이야기하기도 했고.

The risk for Americans is very low. I have also mentioned this before.

그런데 선거운동 과정에서 보수정치행동위원회.

However, during the election campaign, the Conservative Political Action Committee.

보수정치행동위원회에 참석을 했는데 그 참가자 가운데서 확진자가 나왔죠.

I attended the Conservative Political Action Committee, and among the participants, there was a confirmed case.

그런데다가 자이루 보우소나루 브라질 대통령하고 정상회담을 했는데 그 당시에 배석한 브라질 고위관계자도 또 확진 판정을 받습니다.

Moreover, during the summit with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a senior Brazilian official who was present at that time also tested positive.

그래서 기자들이 매일 질문을 한 거죠.

So the reporters asked questions every day.

아니 검사 안 받으셔도 됩니까? 검사 언제 받습니까? 이렇게 이야기를 하니까 불필요하다.

No, you don't need to get tested? When do you receive the test? Saying this makes it unnecessary.

이렇게 계속 답변을 하다가 결국 주치의 공고에 따라서.

If I keep responding like this, ultimately according to the notice from the attending physician.

그래서 검사를 받죠. 그래서 음성 판정을 받긴 했습니다.

So I got tested. And I did receive a negative result.

나이가 고령인데 참 다행입니다.

It’s really fortunate considering your old age.

해외 정상 가운데 자가격리 중인 사람들도 많죠?

Many world leaders are currently in self-isolation, right?

네. 그렇습니다. 드라마 킹덤에서도 나오듯이 코로나19는 신분을 가리지 않습니다.

Yes. That's right. As shown in the drama Kingdom, COVID-19 does not discriminate by social status.

부인들이 코로나19에 걸린 페드로 산체스 스페인 총리하고 쥬스텡 투리도 캐나다 총리 같은 경우에 자가격리를 실시했죠.

In the case of Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, who contracted COVID-19, and Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, self-isolation measures were implemented.

또 몽골 대통령 같은 경우에 시진핑 중국 국가주석을 만난 사실 때문에 귀국 즉시 자가격리에 들어가게 됐고

또 포르투갈 대통령도 관절을 방문한 어린이 가운데서 확진자가 나왔다.

이런 발표가 나오는 바람에 또 자가격리에 들어갔고

Due to this announcement, I went into self-quarantine again.

프랑스에서는 문화부 장관이 확진 판정받고 그 바람에 마크롱 프랑스 대통령도 검사를 받았습니다.

In France, the Minister of Culture tested positive, and as a result, President Macron also underwent testing.

다행히 음성 판정을 받긴 했는데 보리스 존슨 영국 총리도 검사를 받았습니다.

Fortunately, I have tested negative, but British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also been tested.

아이러니하게도 이 대처 방식이 드라마 킹덤에 나오는 그 세도가들의 그 방식과 좀 약간 좀 살짝 비슷한 거 아닌가.

Ironically, isn't this way of dealing with things somewhat similar to the methods of the nobility depicted in the drama "Kingdom"?

이런 생각이 좀 들기도.

I sometimes have thoughts like this.

그래서 좀 기분이 묘합니다.

So I feel a bit strange.

왕들이 있는 나라들이 비슷한 특징을 갖고.

Countries with kings share similar characteristics.

그런 것 같죠.

일본도 지금 아베 총리도 비슷한 선택을 하는 것 같아요.

그런 논리로 지금 흘러갔던 그런 상황이었었는데.

그런데 이제 최근에 조금 분위기는 바뀌고 있는 그런 상황이긴 하죠.

뭐 이런 생각을 좀 했던 거 아닌가 싶어요.

I think I had some thoughts like this.

정치적으로 또 좀 이용하려고 했던 그런 부분도 좀 눈에 띄고.

There were also some noticeable aspects that seemed to be politically motivated or intended for exploitation.

그래서 이것 또한 드라마 킹덤을 좀 연상케 하는 그런 대목이 좀 많이 눈에 띕니다.

So this also has many moments that remind me of the drama Kingdom.

그러니까 소재가.

So, the material is.

우리 현실과 비슷한 점들이 있는 것이어서 이런 일이 있지 않을까 싶은데요.

I think there might be such events because there are similarities to our reality.

시기적절하게 또 이 드라마 킹덤을 제작한 분들 마치 예견한 것 같이 내놨어요.

The people who produced this drama, Kingdom, released it as if they had anticipated it in a timely manner.

그러게 말이에요.

That's true.

만약에 예견했다면 정말 예지력이 출중하신 분들이죠.

If they had foreseen it, they would truly be people with exceptional foresight.

시나리오를 쓴 김은희 작가가 최근 인터뷰에서 이렇게 얘기를 했습니다.

In a recent interview, writer Kim Eun-hee, who wrote the scenario, said this.

자신은 이제 배고픔이란 무엇인가.

What does hunger mean to oneself now?

이것은 잘못된 정치에서 파생된 것이라고 봤다.

I saw this as stemming from flawed politics.

네.

Yes.

그렇다면 정치란 무엇인가를 거쳐 좋은 리더란 무엇인가로 생각이 넓어졌다.

Then, my thoughts expanded from what politics is to what a good leader is.

그래서 이제 작품을 쓰게 된 동기에 대해서 좀 얘기를 좀 했어요.

So I talked a bit about the motivation behind writing the piece.

이 킹덤의 마지막 장면을 이제 보게 되면 좀비들이 이제 왕이 진무를 보는 옥자를 향해서 막 몰려오는 그런 장면이 나옵니다.

In the last scene of this kingdom, you will see the zombies rushing towards the throne where the king is holding court.

이에 대해서도 이제 김 작가는 얘기를 했는데 일국의 왕이 머무는 공간이 전복되는 느낌이어서 가장 상징적인 장면이라고 할 수 있다.

Regarding this, writer Kim has spoken about it, saying that it feels like the space where the king of a country resides is being overturned, making it the most symbolic scene.

이렇게 언급을 했는데.

I mentioned it like this.

그 이제 왕자에서 물러나는.

He is now stepping down from being a prince.

차라리 왕국의 몰락을 택하는 그런 세도가 집안 그 중전의 이제 중전의 마지막 모습 이런 것도 이제 굉장히 인상적이죠.

Rather, it is quite impressive that such a noble family would choose the downfall of the kingdom, and this is the last appearance of the Empress.

그런데 권력은 따지고 보면 이렇게 무상한 건데 조금 전에도 이제 뭐 영국 사례도 말씀드렸고 또 일본 사례도 말씀드렸습니다만 왜 이렇게 집착들 하시고 그 바람에 국민들이 좀 이렇게 희생당하고 그런 것을 좀 외면할까 그런 생각이 좀 아쉬움으로 좀.

However, if you think about it, power is ultimately so fleeting, and I just mentioned the cases of England and Japan a moment ago. Why are people so obsessed with it, causing the citizens to suffer in the process? I can't help but feel a sense of disappointment regarding that.

권력을 누리면 그게.

If you enjoy power, that's it.

아약이 되잖아요.

It becomes a drug.

누리면 안 됩니다.

You shouldn't enjoy it.

좀 그런 것 같긴 합니다.

I think it might be somewhat like that.

감독이 그런데 두 분이에요.

The director is actually two people.

네 그렇습니다.

Yes, that’s right.

시즌 1과 시즌 2의 감독이 다릅니다.

The director of season 1 and season 2 is different.

시즌 1은 끝까지 간다 터널 이런 것으로 좀 유명하신 김성훈 감독이 이제 메가폰을 잡으셨고요.

Season 1 will go all the way, and director Kim Sung-hoon, who is known for works like "Tunnel," is now holding the megaphone.

시즌 2 1회까지 연출을 했습니다.

I directed up to episode 1 of season 2.

그 이후는 모비딕 특별시민을 연출한 박인재 감독이 이제 참가를 했어요.

After that, director Park In-jae, who directed Moby Dick: Special Citizens, has now joined.

이제 이 박인재 감독을 김성훈 감독이 좀 끌어들인 것.

Now, Director Kim Seong-hoon has somewhat brought in Director Park In-jae.

이런 거 같이 한번 해보지 않을래 그래서 이 박인재 감독은 원래 이 사극은 안 해보셨던 분인데 그런데 이제 뭐 흥미도 당기고 그래서 이제 참여를 하셨다 그래요.

How about we try something like this together? So, this director Park In-jae originally had never done historical dramas, but he found it interesting and decided to participate.

지금 뭐 김성훈 감독이 킹덤 시즌 2 제작 발표 때 이렇게 얘기를 했습니다.

Right now, Director Kim Sung-hoon spoke like this during the announcement of the production of Kingdom Season 2.

창작자들 입장에선 불량에 대한 부담을 이 덜면서 작품 본질에 집중할 수 있다 보니 완성도를 높일 수 있었던 것 같다.

From the creators' perspective, it seems that by alleviating the burden of flaws, they were able to focus on the essence of their work, which likely increased its quality.

기니까요.

Because it is.

시청자 입장에선 다양한 감독들의 개성과 특성이 담긴 작품을 즐길 수 있을 것이다 이렇게 언급을 했고 이 박인재 감독은 시즌 2에서 좀 능동적으로 변해가는 세자의 역할 그것에 좀 이제 상당히 초점을 맞춘 것으로 이렇게 좀 전해지고 있습니다.
