Well then, please introduce the book you have chosen today.

네, 제이디 벤스가 쓴 힐빌리의 노래라고 하는 건데요.

Yes, it's said to be a song from Hillbilly written by J.D. Vance.

자서전의 일종이거든요.

It's a kind of autobiography.

그런데 자서전을 쓴 이 벤스가 31살에 썼어요.

However, this Ben who wrote the autobiography did it when he was 31 years old.

그러니까 자서전을 쓰기에는 너무 이른 나이죠.

So it's too early to write an autobiography.

그런데 그럼에도 불구하고 이 책이 미국에서 큰 인기를 끌었고

However, despite that, this book became very popular in the United States.

이게 지금 미국에서 대통령이 바뀌었지만

Even though there has been a change in the presidency in the United States right now,

이전에 백인 노동자들이 왜 공화당을 지지하는가

그 문제가 제기됐을 때 그걸 이해하는 그 사람들의 내면을 이해할 수 있는 어떤 예로

이 책이 많이 언급됐거든요.

This book has been mentioned a lot.

그래서 힐빌리라는 것 자체가 우리는 잘 모르는 말이잖아요.

So the term "hillbilly" is something we don't know much about.

그래서 책의 앞에 보면 시작하기 앞에서 7페이지쯤 되겠네요.

So if you look at the front of the book, it would be around page 7 before starting.

이 책만의 독특한 표현에 대하여라고 해서 용어 설명을 하고 있거든요.

It explains the terms regarding the unique expressions of this book.

그렇군요.

그래서 보면 힐빌리는 미국의 쇠락한 공업지대인 러스트벨트 지역에 사는

So, when you look at it, Hillbilly refers to those living in the Rust Belt region of America's declining industrial areas.

가난하고 소외된 백인 하층민을 가리키는 표현이다.

It is a term that refers to poor and marginalized white lower-class people.

다른 표현으로 백인 쓰레기라는 뜻의 화이트 트래쉬,

In other words, it means white trash.

햇빛에 걸려 목이 발가타는 데서 유래된 교육 수준이 낮고

It originated from the low level of education where the neck gets sunburned from being exposed to sunlight.

정치적으로 보수적인 미국의 시골 백인을 가리키는 모욕적인 표현인 레드넥 등이 사용되기도 한다.

It is sometimes referred to with derogatory terms such as "redneck," which denotes politically conservative rural whites in America.

그럼 그런 의미가 있는 거죠.

So it has that meaning, right?

그래서 힐빌리의 노래, 그러고 나서 힐빌리의 노래라는 제목을 보면

So looking at the title of the song "Hillbilly's Song," then...

이게 뭔가 의미심장하다. 이런 거고요.

This feels quite significant. This is what it is.

네. 그리고 할모와 할보가 나오는데

Yes. And then grandma and grandpa come out.

그러니까 이게 약간 마마, 파파 이렇게 하는 게 아니고

So it's not really like calling someone "mama" or "papa."

MAMAW가 붙고 PAPAW가 붙어가지고

With MAMAW attached and PAPAW attached...

할아버지, 할머니를 부를 때 애칭으로 이렇게 부른다는 거죠.

Grandfather, this means that you call Grandma by an affectionate name like this.

그래서 번역자가 이게 고민에 빠진 거예요.

So the translator is struggling with this.

할머니, 할아버지 이렇게 번역할 수 없으니까.

Grandma, Grandpa, I can't translate it like this.

그래가지고 그냥 할모, 할보라고 이렇게 하기로 했다는 거고요.

So we just decided to call them halmo and halbo.

이 책은 이 할모, 할보한테 바치는 거고요.

This book is dedicated to my grandmother and grandfather.

이런 걸 설명할 때 할모와 할보가 계속 활약하고 있습니다.

When explaining things like this, grandparents are continuously active.

그래서 살고 있는 곳이 켄터키 잭슨이라는 곳인데요.

So I live in a place called Jackson, Kentucky.

그래서 잭슨 사람들이 어떤 사람들이냐 하면 한 6,000명 정도가 이제 살고 있는 곳이에요.

So, what kind of people are in Jackson is that there are about 6,000 people living there now.

잭슨은 켄터키 남동부 탕광촌의 중심부에 위치한 6,000명 정도의 인구가 사는 소도시다 이렇게 이야기하고 있고요.

Jackson is a small town with a population of about 6,000, located in the heart of a coal mining community in southeastern Kentucky.

28페이지 보면 잭슨 사람들은 지나가다 마주치는 모든 사람에게 인사를 건네는 것은 물론이고

On page 28, it says that the people of Jackson greet everyone they come across while passing by, of course.

눈뜨면 인구가 사는 소도시다 이렇게 이야기하고 있고요.

When I open my eyes, it's a small town where people live.

눈뜨미에 빠진 낯선이의 자동차를 빼내기 위해 기꺼이 자기 시간에 내어줄 뿐 아니라

Not only is he willing to give up his own time to help pull out the car of a stranger who has fallen asleep,

운구차 행렬이 있을 때면 예외 없이 차를 세우고

Whenever there is a funeral procession, we must stop our cars without exception.

밖으로 나와 부동자세를 취한다.

Step outside and take a defensive stance.

내가 잭슨이라는 도시와 그곳의 주민들이 특별하다는 사실을 깨달은 건 나중일이었다.

It was later that I realized the city of Jackson and its residents were special.

운구차가 지나가는데 왜 전부 다 길을 멈춰 서는 거예요?

Why does everyone stop on the road when an ambulance passes by?

모두 할모라고 불렀던 우리 외할머니에게 물어봤더니 할모는 이렇게 대답했다.

When I asked our grandmother, whom everyone called Halmo, she answered like this.

아가 우리는 산골 사람이잖니.

Baby, we are country people, aren't we?

산골 사람들은 서로의 죽음에 경계한다.

Mountain village people are watchful of each other's deaths.

그러니까 6천 명 밖에 안 사니까 서로 다 아는 사이 인 거예요.

So there are only 6,000 people, which means everyone knows each other.

서로 다 아는 사이고

We all know each other.

그 마을에서 뭔가 도와드릴 일이 있으면 내 일이든 남의 일이든 무조건 나서서 돕고

If there’s anything I can help with in that village, whether it's my own business or someone else's, I will definitely step in and help.

좋은 일은 같이 나누고 슬픈 일은 같이 서울 파는.

Good things should be shared together, and sad things should be shared together.

그런 동네에서 살았다는 거죠.

It means I lived in such a neighborhood.

이거만 보면 괜찮네? 뭐 이런 생각이 들잖아요.

Just looking at this makes me think, "Isn't this nice?"

근데 뭔가 여기가 노동자들이 사는 곳이기 때문에

But it feels like this is a place where workers live.

법보다 주먹이 앞서는 그런 동네였던 거예요.

It was a neighborhood where fists came before the law.

그래서 거기서 버텨야 되니까 제가 여기 정례에 오면서 할모의 전설을 이렇게 붙여놨는데

So I had to hold on there, so I attached the legend of Halmo while coming to this regular meeting.

할모라는 인물을 중심으로 이 책을 살펴볼 필요가 있는 것 같거든요.

I think it's necessary to examine this book through the character of the grandmother.

우선은 지은이 벤스가 우리 할머니는 이런 사람이다 라고 할 때 처음으로 이야기하는 게 뭐냐면

First of all, when Ji-eun says "My grandmother is this kind of person," what she talks about initially is what.

우리 할머니는 낯선 사내들에게 총을 쏜 사람이다 이렇게 이야기하거든요.

My grandmother is someone who shot a gun at strange men, you know.

그래서 34페이지 보면 전해드린 이야기에 따르면 할모가 12살쯤 되었을 때 가족이 키우던 소를 훔쳐 트럭에 실어내던 낯선 남자들을 목격했다.

On page 34, according to the story I shared, when Halmo was about 12 years old, she witnessed strange men stealing the cows her family raised and loading them onto a truck.

저형 아나운서 같으면 어떻게 하겠어요.

What would you do if you were a broadcaster like me?

12살에 어떤 강도가 들어가지고 소를 훔쳐서 트럭에 싣고 있는 거예요.

At 12 years old, a robber came in and stole a cow, loading it onto a truck.

보통 여자들 같으면 도망가겠죠.

Normally, girls would run away.

도망가든지 아니면.

Either run away or...

그냥 저 놀고 있을 거예요.

I’ll just be playing around.

네. 울든지 아니면 어른들한테 알리러 가든지 할모는 집 안으로 곧장 뛰어가 소총을 집어들고 그대로 몇 발 쏘았다.

Yes. Whether I cried or went to tell the adults, Halmo ran straight into the house, picked up the rifle, and fired several shots just like that.

다리에 총을 맞은 남자는 그 자리에 쓰러졌고 다른 남자는 트럭으로 뛰어들어가 꽁무니를 뺐다.

The man shot in the leg collapsed on the spot, while the other man ran into the truck and fled.

할모가 총에 맞아 간신히 기어가 가기나 할 정도였던 절도 미수범에게 다가가 이마에 총뿌리를 들이댔다.

The grandmother, barely crawling after being shot, approached the attempted thief and pressed the muzzle of the gun to his forehead.

그냥 갈겠을 거예요.

I will just go.

그런데 그 순간에.

But at that moment.

옆집에 사는 운 좋게도 펫 할아버지가 나타났다.

Fortunately, the pet grandfather appeared, living next door.

그렇게 할모의 첫 사살은 다음을 기약해야 했다.

Thus, Halmo's first kill had to promise the next.

12살에.

At the age of 12.

네. 12살 때 할모가 이랬고요.

Yes. My grandmother said this when I was 12 years old.

그래서 할모 밑에 보면 할모는 의리를 저버리는 일을 혐오했으며 그중에서도 같은 처지의 사람들끼리 배신하는 것이 가장 나쁘다고 믿었다.

Therefore, if you look beneath the grandmother, she despised actions that betrayed loyalty, believing that among those in the same situation, betraying one another was the worst.

의리 판 거죠.

It's a matter of loyalty.

뭔가 자기 가족에게 해를 끼치는 사람이 있으면 총을 드는 터미네이터 맞죠.

If someone is causing harm to their own family, it's like a Terminator who picks up a gun, right?

그런 어떤 성격인가고요.

What kind of personality is that?

그런데 이런 할모가 이제 또 일찍 사랑에 눈을 떠요.

However, this grandmother now falls in love early again.

그래서 50페이지 중간에 보면 할모가 13살 때 할보가 16살이었지만 이들의 분류는 임신으로 이어졌다.

So, in the middle of page 50, it says that when Halmo was 13 years old, Halbo was 16, but their classification led to pregnancy.

그리고 임신은 당장 잭슨을 떠나야만 하는 이유가 됐다.

And pregnancy became a reason to leave Jackson immediately.

13살 때 남자친구랑 사랑에 빠져가지고 임신을 해가지고 그 마을을 떠났다는 거죠.

When she was 13, she fell in love with her boyfriend, got pregnant, and left the village.

그래서 이런 경험을 또 할모는 하고 있고요.

So I'm having this experience again.

그래서 나중에 벤스의 엄마가 등장하는데 엄마도 고등학교 졸업하기 전에 또 남자친구랑 사랑에 빠져가지고 애를 낳게 되고

Later, Bens's mom shows up, and before she graduates from high school, she falls in love with another boyfriend and ends up having a baby.

그래서 엄마가 계속 남자를 매달 바꿔요.

So my mom keeps changing men every month.

여러 남자친구.

Several boyfriends.

친구들과 이렇게.

With friends like this.

그래서 제목 자체가 길게 줄을 선 새아버지 후보들 이런 게 이제 한 항복으로 들어가 있거든요.

So the title itself is "Candidates for Stepfathers Lining Up Long," which is now included as one section.

그럴 정도로 또 남성 편력이 엄마가 굉장히 심했고요.

My mom had a very serious issue with men to that extent.

이 속에서 이제 남자 자기가 아버지라고 부를 사람들이 계속 바뀌니까 결국은 이제 할모와 할보 밑에서 이제 크게 되잖아요.

In this environment, as the people a man can call his father keep changing, he eventually grows up under his grandmother and grandfather.

잘하게 되는데.

You'll get better at it.

그 잭슨이란 동네가 워낙 거치니까 이 할모가 이제 이 손자를 가르치는 거죠.

That neighborhood called Jackson is quite rough, so this grandmother is now teaching her grandson.

그래서 백구 쪽에 보면 이거 읽다가 너무 재밌어가지고 정말 한참 생각했는데요.

So, as I was reading this on the white dog side, I found it so interesting that I really thought about it for a long time.

처음에는 이제 계속 싸우다가 막고 들어오는 거예요.

At first, I was just blocking and getting into fights all the time.

벤슨이 막고 들어왔어요.

Benson just barged in.

막고 들어오니까 할모가 이야기하는 거죠.

As I blocked the entrance, the grandmother started talking.

밑에서 보면 언제나 그랬듯 할모는 싸움도 경험을 통해 배우도록 했다.

As always, from below, Halmo made sure to learn about fighting through experience.

할모는 단 한 번도.

Grandma never once.

내게 손찌검을 한 적이 없었지만 내가 주먹으로 얼굴 부위를 맞으면 어떤 느낌이 드는지를 물었을 때는 망설임 없이 직접 시범을 보여줬다.

Although he had never hit me, when I asked what it felt like to be punched in the face, he immediately demonstrated it without hesitation.

할모의 손이 재빠르게 날아와 내 뺨을 정통으로 가격했다.

My grandmother's hand flew quickly and struck my cheek directly.

어떠냐 그렇게 아프진 않지.

How is it? It doesn't hurt that much, right?

그러니까 정말 그랬다.

So it really was like that.

얼굴을 맞았는데도 내가 상상했던 것만큼 끔찍하게 아프진 않았다.

Even though I was hit in the face, it didn't hurt as terribly as I had imagined.

이것이 할모가 가르쳐준 가장 중요한 싸움이었다.

This was the most important lesson in fighting that Halmo taught me.

할모가 이렇게 말하는 거죠.

The grandmother is saying this.

제대로 때릴 줄 아는 사람이 휘두르는 주먹이 아니라면 얼굴도 맞을 만하다.

If it’s not a fist wielded by someone who knows how to hit properly, then it deserves to be hit in the face too.

피하다가 때릴 기회를 놓치는 것보다는 얼굴을 한 대 맞는 게 낫다.

It’s better to take a hit to the face than to miss the opportunity to strike while trying to avoid it.

그러니까 얼굴을 맞아가지고 아플까 싶어가지고 도망다니지 말고

So don't run away because you might get hurt from being hit in the face.

제대로 못 때리는 것 같으면 일단 한 대 맞아주면서 공격해라 이런 거고요.

If you think you can't hit properly, just take a hit first and then counterattack.

두 번째로 중요한 기술은 상대가 가격할 수 있는 면적을 최소화하고

The second most important technique is to minimize the area that the opponent can price.

왼쪽 어깨를 상대방을 향해 내밀고 비스듬하게 서서 가드를 올리는 것이다.

It means to lean your left shoulder towards your opponent and stand at an angle while raising your guard.

세 번째 기술은 주먹의 온 힘을 그중에서도 특히 엉덩이 힘을 실어 가격하라는 것이다.

The third technique is to strike with the full power of your fist, especially by using the strength of your hips.

어떤 할머니가 손자한테 그런 걸...

What kind of grandmother would do something like that to her grandson...

저 따라하고 있었잖아요.

You were copying me, weren't you?

어떻게 해야 되느냐 하면...

그래서 이제 이 기술을 배우고 나서 이대로 했다는 거예요.

그렇게 보면 이제 할모하고 할부하고 뭔가 굉장히 사이가 좋은 것 같잖아요.

10대 때부터 사랑에 빠져가지고 이렇게 다녔으니까.

I fell in love in my teenage years and have been like this ever since.

근데 절대로 그렇지 않았다는 거예요.

But that's absolutely not the case.

그러니까 킬빌리가 그런 동네가 아닌 거죠.

So, Kill Bill isn't that kind of neighborhood.

어떤 동네가 어떻게 됐냐 하면

What happened to a certain neighborhood is that...

할보가 알코올 중독이 된 거예요.

My grandfather has become an alcoholic.

저녁에만 되면 나가서 술을 억바에 마시고 이제

Whenever it gets to evening, I go out and drink alcohol.

굉장히 많이 마시고 들어오는 거죠.

They drink a lot and come in.

그러니까 할모는 할보가 그러고 다니니까

So, Grandma is saying that Grandpa is going around like that.

이제 바깥 세상으로부터 자신을 고립시키기 시작한 거예요.

You are starting to isolate yourself from the outside world.

그래서 할모가 이제 정신적으로 문제가 생기기 시작했는데

So now Grandma is starting to have mental problems.

그게 뭐냐면 한 번 집에 들어온 것들을 하나도 버리지 않는 거죠.

What that means is not throwing away anything that has come into the house once.

그래서 계속 쌓아두는 거예요.

So I keep accumulating it.

그래서 우리가 요즘도 어떤 이렇게 다큐멘터리 보면

So these days, when we watch documentaries like this...

집에 쓰레기 산처럼 잔뜩 쌓아두고

Piling up garbage like a mountain at home

제대로 청소도 하지 않고 살아가는 그런 모습들 보게 되잖아요.

You see people living in ways without properly cleaning.

그러니까 할모는...

So, grandma...

할모가 그랬다는 거죠.

That's what my grandmother said.

그래서 그런 사람들을 호도라고 부르네요.

That's why people like that are called deceivers.

물건을 버리지 못하고 강박적으로 쌓아두는 사람을 가리키는 호도라는 말이

The term "hodo" refers to a person who cannot throw away objects and obsessively hoards them.

일상적으로 쓰이기 전이었지만

It was before it was commonly used.

호도라는 말은 당시의 할모에게 꼭 들어맞는 표현이었다.

The word "hodo" was a perfect expression for the grandmother of that time.

그러니까 완전히 개판인 거죠.

So it's completely a mess.

그래서 할모가 막 쌓아두고

So the grandmother just piled it up.

이렇게 막 청소도 안 하고 밥도 안 하고 이렇게 살고 있고요.

I'm just living like this without cleaning or eating.

근데 할모는 맨날 술이 이렇게 취해가지고 들어오고

But Grandma always comes home like this, completely drunk.

들어오면 이제 할모하고

If you come in, you'll be with grandma now.

치고받고 싸우고

Hit and fight.

그래서 할모가 경고하는 거예요.

That's why grandma is warning you.

한 번만 더 술 먹고 들어오면 내가 가만두지 않겠다.

If you come home drunk just one more time, I won’t let it slide.

근데 할모가 말을 안 듣는 거죠.

But grandma doesn't listen.

술이 또 엄청 취해가지고 들어온 거예요.

I came in completely drunk again.

그러니까 할모가 어떻게 했겠어요?

So what do you think Halmo would have done?

74페이지에 나오는데

It appears on page 74.

할모는 할보에게 한 번만 더 술에 취해서 집에 들어오면 죽여버리겠다고 얼음장을 놓았다.

Grandma warned Grandpa that if he came home drunk just one more time, she would kill him.

일주일 후 할모는 또다시 술을 마신 채로 귀가해

A week later, grandma came home drunk again.

소파에서 잠이 들었다.

I fell asleep on the sofa.

빈말이라고는 해본 적이 없는 할모는 차분히 차고로 가서 휘발유통을 가져오더니

Grandmother, who had never made idle promises, calmly went to the garage, fetched a gasoline canister, and then...

휘발유를 남편의 온몸에 붓고 불붙은 성냥을 거의 가슴팍에 떨어뜨렸다.

She poured gasoline all over her husband's body and almost dropped a lit match onto his chest.

할보의 몸에서 불길이 치솟자

As the flames surged from Halbo's body

11살짜리 딸이 재빨리 나서서

My 11-year-old daughter quickly stepped up.

벤스의 엄마인 거죠.

It's Ben's mom.

엄마가 딸이 재빨리 나서서 불을 꺼 아버지의 목숨을 구했다.

The mother quickly stepped in to extinguish the fire and saved her father's life.

기적적으로 할보는 가벼운 화상으로

Miraculously, Halbo has light burns.

한마리 입은 채 그날의 위기를 넘겼다.

I survived that day's crisis while wearing one.

남편의 엉덩이에 휘발유를 부어가지고 불질을 부렸네.

I poured gasoline on my husband's butt and set it on fire.

딸이 없었으면 어쩔 뻔했어요.

What would I have done if I didn't have a daughter?

엄청나죠.

It's amazing.

그래서 이게 제가 정리한 할모의 전설이고요.

So this is the legend of Halmo that I organized.

그래서 할모가 아주 거칠게 인생을 산 거죠.

So, grandma lived her life very roughly.

인생을 이렇게 10대 때부터 해가지고 인생을 이렇게 살았고

I've lived my life like this since I was a teenager.

막 그렇게 살다가 이제 이 할모와 할보가 정신을 번쩍 차리게 돼요.

Just living like that, now this grandma and grandpa are coming to their senses.

그게 어떤 순간이냐면

It's that kind of moment.

그러니까 그 엄마가 이제 고등학교를 졸업할 때쯤에

So, around the time that mom graduates from high school.

애를 낳게 되는 거죠.

You will have a baby.

그래서 또 미혼모가 되는 거예요.

So that's why I end up becoming a single mother again.

그래서 그 순간에 정신을 번쩍 차려가지고

So at that moment, I snapped back to reality.

할보가 술을 끊어요.

Grandpa is quitting drinking.

술을 끊고 그래서 이제 손자를 봐야겠다는 생각에

I quit drinking, and now I've been thinking that I should see my grandchild.

할보와 할모가 정신을 차리게 되는 거죠.

The grandmother and grandfather will regain their senses.

그런데 이게 문제는요.

But here's the problem.

문제가 되는 게 이 엄마가 또 굉장히 문제적인 머리예요.

The problem is that this mother has a very problematic mindset.

엄마가 원래는 공부를 잘했어.

Mom used to study well.

그런데 이 할모와 할보가 이렇게 서로 티격태격 싸우다 보니까

However, as this grandmother and grandfather keep squabbling with each other...

제대로 자식을 근사를 못한 거죠.

I didn't raise my child properly.

그러니까 이제 결국은 엄마가 대학을 못 가고

So in the end, Mom couldn't go to college.

나중에 이제 간호사가 되려고 전문적으로 머리는 좋았던 거예요.

I was good at studying because I wanted to become a nurse later on.

공부를 해가지고 간호사가 됐어요.

I studied and became a nurse.

간호사가 됐는데 마약성 진통제 중독이 되는 거예요.

I became a nurse, but I became addicted to narcotic painkillers.

그래서 엄마가 또 계속 이 마약성 진통제를 먹고

So my mom continues to take this narcotic painkiller.

그리고 또 남자를 사귀고 또 남자를 바꾸고

And then date another man, and change to another man.

뭐 이런 일들이 계속 일어나는 거죠.

Why do these things keep happening?

그런데 이 책에서 이제 가장 굉장히 웃기면서도 굉장히 슬픈

However, in this book, there are parts that are both incredibly funny and very sad.

그리고 이 할모가 또 다른 결심을 하게 되는 장면이 뭐냐 하면

And the scene where this grandmother makes another decision is...

어쨌든 그러다가 이제 할보가 돌아가시고 나서

할모가 할모와 같이 살았기 때문에 이 벤스가 그러니까 엄마의 어떤 그 잘못된 길 그런 길로 가지 않고 제대로 대학도 가고 대학 가서 또 좋은 사람 만나서 결혼도 하고 그렇게 하게 되었구나.

Because grandma lived with grandma, this Benz means that mom didn't follow some wrong path, but went to a proper university, met a good person there, and got married.

이런 게 이제 이 책의 어떤 결론이라고 볼 수 있는 것 같아요.

I think this can be seen as a kind of conclusion of this book.

그래서 나를 키우고 지킨 건.
