저도 아이돌 이름들 다 꿰고 다니고, 또 유난히 좋아했던 아이돌 그룹도 있었고.

I am an idol...

아이돌이 굉장히 많아지다 보니까 어느 순간부터는 수를 세다가 그만뒀어요.

As the number of idols has increased significantly, I stopped counting them at some point.

이렇게 특별하지만 특별해지기 위해 정말 피나는 노력을 해야 하는 아이돌.

An idol who is special like this, but has to put in an excruciating effort to become special.

오늘은 이렇게 아이돌 이야기로 시작을 해봤는데요.

레드벨벳 빨간맛, 아이유의 밤편지, 그리고 윤정신의 메가히트 노래 존니가 유행하던 2017년에 있었던 일이에요.

This happened in 2017 when Red Velvet's "Red Flavor," IU's "Night Letter," and Yoon Jong-shin's mega-hit song "Johnny" were trending.

그때 당시 걸그룹을 준비했던 연습생 출신인 서연이라는 친구를 알게 되었어요.

I got to know a friend named Seoyeon, who is a former trainee who was preparing to debut in a girl group at that time.

지금은 연습생을 그만두고 다른 일을 하려고 찾고 있다고 하는데

They are saying that they are looking for another job after quitting being a trainee.

서연이가 자신이 연습생 생활을 했던 기획사에서 있었던 일을 저에게 들려줘서 이야기를 풀어보려 해요.

Seoyeon is sharing with me what happened at the agency where she was a trainee, so I want to discuss it.

서연이는 초등학생 때부터 원악기도 많고 노래하고 춤추는 걸 좋아했어요.

Seoyeon has liked singing, dancing, and playing various musical instruments since she was in elementary school.

그래서 수학여행이나 학교 행사가 있었어요.

수학여행이나 학교 행사가 있으면 꼭 춤을 추었고 예쁘장한 얼굴에 센터에서 춤도 곧잘 추니까 사람들에게 늘 주목을 받았다고 해요.

거기에다가 노래까지 잘해서 스스로도 정말 나 잘하는 건가 생각도 들었다고 하고요.

그래서 중학교 올라가서는 SM이나 YG, JYP 같은 대형 기획사에 오디션을 보러 다녔는데요.

So when I went to middle school, I auditioned for major entertainment companies like SM, YG, and JYP.

문제는 이런 곳은 정말 못해 끼쟁이잖아요.

막상 큰 기획사 오디션을 보러 갔더니 자신보다 더 예쁘고 멋있고 심지어 입이 떡 벌어질 정도로 노래와 댄스를 잘하는 친구들이 보이더래요.

대형 기획사 오디션을 보러 갔더니 자신보다 더 예쁘고 멋있고 심지어 입이 떡 벌어질 정도로 노래와 댄스를 잘하는 친구들이 보이더래요.

When I went to audition for a major entertainment company, I saw friends who were prettier, cooler, and even so talented at singing and dancing that it took my breath away.

결국 서연이는 중학교 때 봤던 대형 기획사 오디션은 모두 떨어졌다고 하는데요.

In the end, Seoyeon said she failed all the auditions for large entertainment companies that she attended during middle school.

그렇게 자신감이 하락한 서연이는 꿈을 포기해야 하나 싶었어요.

그런데 고등학교 올라가기 전 신설된 조그만 중소연예 기획사의 공고를 보게 되었고

그렇게 그 소리를 들은 다른 연습생들이 화장실로 달려와 서연이를 불렀고

이게 처음에 연습생들이 자꾸 이상한 어떤 경험을 한 거잖아요.

At first, the trainees kept having some strange experiences.

그게 귀신인지 그 당시에는 정확히는 알 수는 없지만...

I can't say for sure if it was a ghost at that time...

전조 증상.

Prodromal symptoms.

뭔가 야 나가 이런 귀에 들렸다든지...

"Something like, 'Hey, I heard this in my ear...'"

그것도 너무 싫어.

I hate that too.

뭐 그렇게 하다가 나는 그 서연이의 마음이 제일 좀 공감이 돼서 무서웠는데...

I was scared because I could relate the most to that Seoyeon's feelings while doing that...

다들 겪었으니 이제 곧 나도 겪을 텐데 하는 그 공포감 있죠.

There's that feeling of dread that comes from knowing that since everyone has experienced it, I will soon experience it too.

그게 제일 무서웠을 것 같아요.

근데 정말 그랬어요.

불을 꺼지면 실루엣이 보이는데 불이 켜지면 없고

다시 확인해 볼 겸 불을 꺼졌는데 실루엣이 이만큼 다가와져 있고

이런 영화가 있었거든요.

저는 그 영화 장면이 생각나서 너무 무서웠어요.

저는 본의 아니게 누군가를 놀려 켜드린 적이 있었는데

엘리베이터 앞에 센서 등이 있잖아요.

근데 그게 내가 있음에도 불구하고 가끔 꺼질 때가 있어요.

내 입장에서는 곧 엘리베이터 탈 거니까 가만히 있었던 건데

엘리베이터 미리 타고 계셨던 분이 문이 열리면서 저를 보고
