오늘은 이러한 차별과 억압을 뚫고 미국에서 가장 영향력 있는 작가로 거듭난 마야 안젤로라는 흑인 여성이.

Today, a black woman named Maya Angelou, who transformed into the most influential writer in America, breaks through such discrimination and oppression.

새와 새장을 어떻게 보았는지 함께 감상해 보겠습니다.

마야 안젤로라면 제가 사실 영어 공부할 때 굉장히 도움을 많이 줬다.

뮤지컬을 포함해서 정말 새장과 새에 대한 모티브는 참 여러 작품에서 나오는데요.

이 시에서는 자유로운 새와 새장의 새를 비교하는데 영철님은 새에 비유한다면 어떤 종류의 새라고 혹시 생각하시나요?

I am a bird in a cage dreaming of freedom.

그러나 그 새장을 반쯤은 열고 있는 그런 새라고 생각을 하거든요.

However, I think it's a bird that keeps that cage half open.

우리는 모두 일정한 사회적인 재앙을 가진 새.

We are all birds with a certain social disaster.

그 새가 제약 속에 살아갈 수 밖에 없는데 이 시에서 보듯이 어쩌면 사람들은 작은 새장에서 우쭐대며 살아가는 새가 될 때도 있는 듯합니다.

The bird has no choice but to live within constraints, and as seen in this poem, perhaps people sometimes become like a bird puffing up in a small cage.

이 시에서 보듯이 어쩌면 사람들은 작은 새장에서 우쭐대며 살아가는 새가 될 때도 있는 듯합니다.

As seen in this poem, it seems that sometimes people can become like birds living proudly in a small cage.

실상은 날 수도 없고 발도 묶인 상태인데도 말이죠.

The reality is that I can't even fly and I'm bound at the feet, yet still...

그런데 시인은 그러한 새장의 새를 비극적으로 그리지 않고 있는 것 같습니다.

However, it seems that the poet is not depicting the bird in the cage tragically.

시를 보면 떨리지만 갈망하는 목소리로 노래를 하는 새, 무엇보다 자유를 노래하는 새.

A bird that trembles when it sees the poem, yet sings with a voice full of longing, a bird that sings of freedom above all.

무엇보다 자유를 노래하는 새.

A bird that sings of freedom above all.

배유를 노래하는 새. 그게 바로 이 새가 꿈꾸는 세상이기 때문에 새장 속에 있더라도 숨죽여 침묵하는 새들과는 다른 삶이겠죠.

A bird singing about freedom. That is the world this bird dreams of, so even if it is in a cage, it would be a different life from the silent birds that hold their breath.

그러니까 뭔가 주눅든 새가 아니에요. 떨리지만 갈망하는 목소리가 떨리지만 언제든 나라를 준비를 하고 있는 희망을 품은 새.

So it's not like a bird that is intimidated. It's a bird whose voice trembles with longing but is always ready, filled with hope for the country.

네. 갈망을 품은 새. 그렇죠?

날아가는 새들 바라보면 어떤 희망이 느껴지지 않겠어요?

시인에 대해서 알면 더 와닿으실 것 같아요.

마야 안젤로는 1928년 미주리주에서 태어나 부모님께서 이혼을 하셨기 때문에 3살부터는 친오빠와 함께 할머니 집에서 자라는데요.

Maya Angelou was born in 1928 in Missouri, and because her parents divorced, she was raised by her grandmother along with her older brother from the age of three.

가진 차별을 당하고 심지어 엄마의 남자친구로부터 학대를 받기도 했다고 합니다.

It is said that she suffered discrimination and was even abused by her mother's boyfriend.

그러다가 이웃에 살던 교사 버사 플라워스의 도움으로 문학을 접하게 되고 17살 때는 미혼모로 아들을 낳아서

Then, with the help of a teacher named Vursa Flowers who lived next door, she was introduced to literature, and at the age of 17, she became a single mother and gave birth to a son.

요리사, 스트립댄서 등 온갖 고생을 하며 아들을 키웁니다.

I raise my son while doing all kinds of hard work, such as being a chef and a strip dancer.

1959년 뉴욕으로 이주 할렘 작가협회에 가입하면서 본격적으로 작가의 길을 걷기 시작하는데요.

In 1959, after moving to New York and joining the Harlem Writers Guild, I began my journey as a writer in earnest.

결국 인종차별, 폭행 등 어린 시절 직접 겪었던 아픔을 그린 첫 작품.

Ultimately, it is the first work that depicts the pain experienced during childhood, including racism and violence.

그의 삶을 보면 자기를 둘러싼 가진 세장, 즉 그 한계와 제약을 넘어서 결국은 자유롭게 날아간 세장.
