옛날 옛적 어둠 마을에 욕심쟁이 보자 영감은 살았어요 어찌나 욕심이 많은지 한번도 남을 도운 적이 없었어요

Once upon a time, in a dark village, there lived a greedy old man. He was so greedy that he had never helped anyone in his life.

그 욕심쟁이 보자 영감의 집 앞에는 커다란 느티나무가 한가루 있었어요 여름이면 보자 영감은 그 그늘 아래에 자리를 깔고 낮잠을 즐기고는 하였어요 욕심많은 보자 영감은 다른 사람들이 그 그늘에서 쉬지 못하게 하였어요

The greedy old man had a large zelkova tree in front of his house. In the summer, he would spread out a mat under its shade and enjoy his naps. The greedy old man would make sure that others could not rest in that shade.

그런데 그 마을에는 마음가짐이 바르고 똑똑한 총각이 살고 있었어요

However, in that village, there was a young man with a good mindset and intelligence.

어느 날 총각은 밭에서 일하다

One day, the young man was working in the fields.

너무 더워 보자 영감의 집 앞 느티나무 그늘로 갔어요

It was too hot, so I went to the shade of the paulownia tree in front of the inspiration's house.

무슨 날씨가 이렇게 덥지 저 느티나무 그늘에 가서 좀 쉬어야겠어

총각이 잠들어 있는 보자 영감 곁에 앉아 한참 쉬고 있는데 보자 영감이 깨어 일어났어요

해가 기울게 되니 그림자가 부자 영감의 집 마당 안으로 길게 기울어졌어요

총각도 그 나무 그늘을 따라 부자 영감의 집 마당 안으로 자리를 옮겼어요

The bachelor also moved to a spot in the yard of the wealthy old man's house, following the shade of the tree.

그러자 부자 영감이 총각에게

Then the wealthy old man said to the young man.

화를 냈어요

I got angry.

이놈아 왜 남의 집 마당 깡까지 들어왔느냐 썩 나가지 못해

영감님 저는 제 나무 그늘에 앉아있어요 영감님께서 분명히 다섯 냥을 받고 판 나무 그늘이 아닙니까

이리하여 부자 영감네 집에 많은 손님이 찾아와서 좋은 음식을 먹으며 이야기를 하고 있었어요
