1983년 캐나다, 빅토리아주. 경찰서로 한 통의 소포가 전달됐다.

In 1983, Canada, Victoria. A package was delivered to the police station.

발송인은 사형 집행자. 해당 소포엔 비디오가 들어있었고, 그 비디오의 영상엔 자신이 연쇄살인범임을 자처하는 남자가 담겨져 있었다.

The sender is the executioner. The package contained a video, and the video showed a man claiming to be a serial killer.

당시 캐나다에는 전국적으로 특정인을 살해하는 연쇄살인범이 등장해 있었다.

At that time, a serial killer targeting specific individuals had emerged across Canada.

피해자의 시체는 항상 심하게 훼손된 상태에서 발견되었고, 심지어 토막나있기까지 했다.

The victim's body was always found in a severely mutilated state, and it was even dismembered at times.

하지만 대대적인 수사에도 전혀 진전이 없었고, 피해자는 이미 9명을 넘긴 상태였다.

However, despite the extensive investigation, there was no progress at all, and the number of victims had already surpassed nine.

하지만 언론 및 시민들은 전혀 동요하지 않았다. 되려 그를 응원하는 자들마저 생겨났다.

그 이유는 살인의 대상자들이 전부 성범죄자들이었기 때문이었다.

소포 속에 있던 비디오 영상에는 그 연쇄살인범임이 있었다.

살인범을 자처하는 남자의 모습이 담겨져 있었다.

그 옆엔 사형집행자를 자처했던 남자가 여러 가지 도구들을 손질하고 있었다.

Next to him, a man who claimed to be the executioner was preparing various tools.

그리고는 펜치를 집어들더니 의자에 묶인 남자를 향해 말했다.

Then she picked up the pliers and said to the man tied to the chair.

1분 동안 나는 쓰레기입니다를 서른 번 외치면 살려주지.

If I shout "I am trash" thirty times in one minute, you will spare me.

말이 끝나기 무섭게 의자에 묶여있던 남자가

As soon as the words ended, the man tied to the chair...

남자는 나는 쓰레기입니다를 연발했다.

The man kept saying, "I am garbage."

그러자 사형집행자는 의자에 묶인 남자의 발톱을 뜯어내기 시작했다.

Then the executioner began to tear the toenails off the man bound to the chair.

묶여있던 남자는 남발했던 말을 멈춘 채 비명만을 지르기 시작한다.

The bound man stops his reckless words and begins to scream.

사형집행자는 양발과 양손을 번갈아 가며 발톱과 손톱을 하나씩 뜯어내고 있었다.

The executioner was alternately plucking one toenail and one fingernail from both feet and hands.

비디오를 시청하던 경찰들은 잔혹한 영상 앞에 말을 잊었다.

The police watching the video were left speechless in front of the brutal footage.

이미 몇몇은 등을 돌린 상태였다.

Some had already turned their backs.

1분 지났다.

One minute has passed.

넌 30번을 다 하지 못했어.

묶여있던 남자는 살려달라며 울고불고 난리를 피웠다.

두 달 뒤 남자는 벤쿠버에서 체포되었다.

그는 경찰서에서 담담한 표정으로 자신의 죄를 순순히 잡았다.

그리고 그날 밤 그는 유치소에 숨겨둔 청산가리 알약을 먹고 자살했다.

That night, he swallowed the cyanide pills he had hidden in the juvenile detention center and committed suicide.

그는 죽기 전 분필로 벽에 유서를 남겼다.

He left a will on the wall with chalk before he died.

The police said the man committed suicide the day after.

공식적으로 사건이 마무리됐음을 선포했고

남자가 알약을 먹고 자살했음을 발표했다.

It was announced that the man committed suicide by taking pills.

언론은 대대적으로 이 사건을 보도하게 되었고

하지만 수많은 노력에도 끝내 범인은커녕 단서 하나 찾지 못했다고 한다.

이 사건이 지속되었던 근 5년 동안은
