단식 광대라고 하는 책이 있습니다

굉장히 독특한 소재인데요

It's a very unique material.

그 당시 유럽에서만 해도 좀 유행이었던

하나의 퍼포먼스입니다

뭐냐면 어느 한 사람이

그냥 우리 안에 갇혀가지고 굶는 거예요

며칠을 굶기도 하고 최대 40일까지 굶습니다

I sometimes go days without food and can fast for up to 40 days.

근데 이게 굉장히 유행이었던 터라

수천 명의 사람들이 와가지고 구경을 했대요

그래서 이 사람이 거기서 힘들어하고

물만 마시면서 야외어가는 그런 모습을 본 것이죠

근데 제가 보면 생각해서는

아무 재미가 없을 것 같아요

그래서 그런지 금방 인기가 사그러들었다고 합니다

Perhaps that's why it quickly lost popularity.

그래서 이 사람이 처음에는 독립적으로 공연을 했었는데

나중에 사람들이 이제 너무 안 오니까

People are not coming anymore.

공마단에 취직을 했습니다

굉장히 의미하는 것이죠

그것이 많은 소설이기는 합니다

It's quite a lot of novels.

근데 저는 오늘 우리가 절제에 대해서 얘기하면서

But today, as we talk about moderation,

단식 금식이라고 하는 것이

Fasting, which is called a fast,

어쩌면 절제의 가장 대표적인 상징적인 모습이 아닌가도 생각해 봤어요

I thought it might be one of the most representative symbolic images of moderation.

소설에서 나왔듯이 이건 물론 오래전에 얘기지만

As mentioned in the novel, this is of course a story from a long time ago.

우리가 현대를 살면서 지금 성장주의 소비주의

As we live in modern times, we are now experiencing growth-oriented consumerism.

어떤 쾌락주의가 가득 차 있는 이 시대에는

In this era filled with hedonism,

절제가 그렇게 인기있고

Restraint is so popular.

인기 있는 덕목이 아닙니다

It is not a popular virtue.

이게 고대 헬라 시대만 해도요

절제라고 하는 것은 철학에 있어서 굉장히 중요한 주제였어요

Moderation has been a very important topic in philosophy.

많은 철학자들이 절제에 대해서 얘기를 하고

Many philosophers talk about moderation, and...

우리 인생의 덕목 중에 가장 중요한 것 중에 하나고

It is one of the most important virtues in our lives.

또 특별히 우리 인생의 목적을 이루는 데 있어서

Also, especially in achieving the purpose of our lives.

이 절제가 중요하다 이런 이야기들을 많이 나눴습니다

We talked a lot about how important this restraint is.

근데 오늘 여러분에게는 어떻습니까?

But how about today for you all?

우리에게는 어떻습니까?

2012년에 펜실베니아 대학에서 한 연구가 있었는데

There was a study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012.

사람들이 가지고 있는 그런 역량들

The capabilities that people have.

이거를 24가지 정도로 정리를 했어요

I organized this into about 24 categories.

그리고 자그마치 200만 명에게 설문조사를 했습니다

And we conducted a survey with as many as 2 million people.

근데 자기가 가지고 있는 그런 강점이 뭐냐

But what strengths do you have?

라고 하는 순서들을 열고 하는데

거기서 24번째

이루어졌던 게 셀프 컨트롤 절제였다고 해요

They say what was achieved was self-control and moderation.

반면에 그 설문조사에 참여했던 사람들이

어떤 사회 속에서 이렇게 말하자면 성공한 사람들

In a society like this, we can say that they are successful people.

그 사람들의 상위 9%를 조사했더니

When I investigated the top 9% of those people,

자기의 장점 중에 셀프 컨트롤이 압도적으로 많았다고 합니다

It is said that self-control was overwhelmingly one of their strengths.

그러니까 우리 인생의 목표를 이루거나

또 성공을 하는 데 있어서 굉장히 중요한 덕목이지만

사람들이 별로 좋아하지는 않는

Not many people like it.

또 잘한다고 생각하지도 않는

I also don't think I'm doing well.

그런 역량이 이 절제인 거죠

That ability is what this restraint is about.

우리가 성령의 아홉 가지 열매

The nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.

오늘이 마지막입니다

Today is the last day.

이 절제가 맨 나중에 있어요

This restraint is the last to exist.

그것은 이 자체가 가장 덜 중요하다

It is the least important in itself.

라고 하는 의미는 분명히 아닐 겁니다

It definitely doesn't mean that.

그런데 혹자는 이렇게 해석하더라고요

However, some people interpret it like this.

모든 성령의 열매는 사랑에서 시작한다

All the fruits of the Spirit begin with love.

다시 말하면 사랑이 동기가 됐을 때

In other words, when love becomes the motivation.

그 열매가 진정한 것이 된다라는 거예요

That fruit becomes the true one.

내가 사랑할 때 진정으로 기뻐할 수 있고

When I love, I can truly be happy.

사랑할 때 진정으로 온유할 수 있고

When you love, you can truly be gentle.

사랑할 때 참을 수 있고

"When in love, one can endure."

뭐 이런 이 사랑이 동기가 되는 것이기 때문에

Because this love serves as the motivation.

사랑이 맨 처음에 있고

Love is what exists at the very beginning.

절제는 이 모든 열매들이 진정성을 갖기 위해서

Self-control is necessary for all these fruits to possess authenticity.

그러니까 그 열매가 진짜 열매가 되기 위해서

So, in order for that fruit to truly become a fruit,

절제라는 그릇에 담겨야 된다라는 것입니다

It must be contained within the vessel of moderation.

왜냐하면 아무리 좋은 것이라도

Because no matter how good something is,

절제하면 그 가치가 떨어지거나

If you regulate it, its value decreases or

아니면 처음에 의도한 것이

Or what was intended in the beginning.

왜곡될 수 있기 때문입니다

It is because it can be distorted.

한 번 제가 말씀드린 적이 있지만

I have mentioned this once before, but...

제가 몇 달 전부터 뛰는 걸 좀 시작했습니다

I started running a bit a few months ago.

저희 교회 성대님 중에 마라선 하시는 분이 있어 가지고

There is a member of our church who runs marathons.

몇 명을 가르쳐 주셨어요

How many people did you teach?

그래서 제가 몇 번 뛰었는데

So I ran a few times.

저는 제가 그렇게 잘 뛰는 줄 몰랐어요

I didn't know I could run so well.

저한테 막 칭찬을 해 주시는 거예요

You are giving me a lot of compliments.

아 목사님 너무 잘 뛰고 자세도 너무 좋고

Ah, pastor, you run so well and your posture is so good!

마라톤 대회 나가도 되겠다

I can participate in the marathon competition.

이렇게 하시니까 제가 그냥 신나 가지고

Doing it this way just gets me so excited.

더 잘 보이기 위해서 주중에 연습도 많이 했어요

I practiced a lot during the week to look better.

그래서 잘 뛰려면 다리에 힘이 있어야 되기 때문에

So in order to run well, you need to have strength in your legs.

평소에 다리 운동도 하고 스쿼트도 많이 하고

I usually do leg exercises and a lot of squats.

그리고 뛰는 날도 아닌데 혼자서 뛰기도 하고

And even though it's not a running day, I sometimes run alone.

그러다 보니까 운동을 너무 많이 하게 된 거예요

근데 또 우리 성도님이 가르치니까

But since our church member is teaching...

또 이 기대를 하고 있는데

I'm looking forward to this again.

제가 또 실망시켜 드릴 수가 없으니까

I can't disappoint you again.

전 뛰면서 무릎이 아픈데도 계속 뛰었어요

I kept running even though my knees hurt while running.

그러다 보니까 나중에는 도저히 뛸 수 없는 상황이 되더라

Eventually, it became a situation where I could no longer run.

그래서 요즘은 안 뛰고 있습니다

So these days, I’m not running.

연습한다는 게 뭐 나쁜 건 아니죠

Practicing isn't a bad thing.

근데 좀 지나치다 보니까

But after a while, it seems a bit excessive.

오히려

On the contrary.

이거를 지속할 수가 없는 상황이 된 것처럼

It feels like we are in a situation where we can't continue this.

우리 삶에 있는 많은 좋은 덕목들이 있는데

There are many good virtues in our lives.

그것을 우리가 어떻게 절제하고 있는가

How are we restraining it?

이것이 참 중요합니다

This is very important.

절제에 대해서 한자 성어 유명한 게 하나 있죠

There's a famous four-character idiom about moderation, isn't there?

왜냐하면 과유불급

Because too much is as bad as too little.

지나치는 것은 미치지 못함과도 같다

To pass by is to fall short.

라고 하는 의미입니다

It means that.

그렇죠 아무리 좋은 거라도

That's right, no matter how good it is.

우리가 너무 과하게 쓸 때는

When we use it excessively

너무 과하게 쓸 때는

When using too excessively

그것이 좋지 않고 또 왜곡될 수가 있죠

That's not good, and it can also be distorted.

자 이렇게 뭔가를 과하지 않게 하는 거

So, doing something without going overboard.

이것도 절제입니다

This is also moderation.

근데 절제에 조금 더 적극적인 의미는

But a more proactive meaning of restraint is...

무언가를 아예 하지 않는 거예요

It's about not doing anything at all.

끊어버리는 것입니다

It's about cutting it off.

우리 삶에도 그래야 될 일들이 있지요

그 를 알 수 없을 겁니다

유명한 알렉산더 대왕이 소아시아 지역

The famous Alexander the Great in the region of Asia Minor.

거기를 점령할 때 프리지아 지역에 도착했습니다

We arrived in the Phrygia region when we occupied there.

근데 그 지역에는 뭐가 유명하냐면

But what's famous in that area is

그 전에 한 400년 전에 살던

About 400 years ago.

이 고르디우스라고 하는 왕이

This king named Gordius

그 지역이 어떻게 왕이 됐냐면

How that area became a king is...

그 지역에 예언이 있었어요

There was a prophecy in that area.

어느 날 왕이 될 사람이 이륜 마차를 타고 올 것이다

One day, a person who will become king will come riding a two-wheeled cart.

그 당시에는 이륜 마차가 흔하지 않았기 때문에

At that time, two-wheeled carts were not common.

어떻게든 하여튼 이런 마차를 타고 갔는데

Somehow, I rode in this kind of carriage.

사람들이 칭송을 하고 또 여러 가지 일이 있어서 결국은 왕이 됐어요

People praised him, and due to various circumstances, he eventually became the king.

이 마차 덕에 왕이 됐다

Thanks to this carriage, I became king.

이 마차는 내 소유이기 때문에 다른 사람이 타지 못하게 해야 되겠다 해서

Since this carriage is my possession, I need to make sure that others cannot ride it.

어떻게 되냐면 이 마차를 거기에 있는 신전에 아예 묶어버린 거예요

What happens is that this cart is completely tied up at the shrine over there.

거기에 아주 단단하고 복잡하게 매듭을 만들어 가지고

Tying it with a very tight and complex knot.

아무도 풀지 못하도록

So that no one can solve it.

근데 그것을 보고 한 예언자가 뭐라고 했냐면

But upon seeing that, a prophet said что...

후대에 어느 사람이 나타나서 이 매듭을 푸는 자가 있다면

If someone in the future appears and unties this knot,

그 사람은 소아시아의 왕이 될 것이다

That person will become the king of Asia Minor.

또 소아시아를 다 다스리게 될 것이다

They will also rule over all of Asia Minor.

이렇게 했대요

They say they did it this way.

근데 이제 이게 400년 동안이나

But now this has lasted for 400 years.

아무 머리 쓰나 께나 쓴다는 사람들이 다 해봤는데

Everyone who claims to use their brains has tried it all.

다 안 되는 거예요

It's all not going to work out.

그때 알렉산더 대왕이 이것을 보자마자 어떻게 했습니까?

What did Alexander the Great do as soon as he saw this?

단칼을 꺼내서 이것을 그냥 끊어버린 거예요

I took out a sword and simply cut this off.

결국 소아시아 지역을 알렉산더가 차지하기는 했지요

이 말은 무슨 말이냐면 뭔가 풀기 어려운 문제들

This means something that refers to difficult problems to solve.

또 복잡한 문제들

Complex problems again.

그거에 대해서 우리는 고민하고

We are thinking about that.

또 그것을 어떻게든 내가 원하는 대로 하려고 하지만 안 될 때

And when I try to make it happen the way I want, but it doesn't work out.

아예 그것을 끊어버려라

Just cut it off completely.

라고 하는 의미로서도 쓰이기도 하고

It is also used in the sense of saying.

또 그것이 좋은 해결 방법이다

And that is a good solution.

라는 이야기도 합니다

It is said that.

근데 재미있는 것은요

But what's interesting is...

비슷한 이야기가 중국에도 있더라고요

There seems to be a similar story in China as well.

근데 그거를 이제 한자로 쾌도난마

But that can now be expressed in Chinese characters as 쾌도난마 (快刀斩马).

제가 오늘 문자를 굉장히 많이 쓰죠

쾌도난마라고 하는데 이것은 어떤 얘기냐면

중국의 고대의 어느 한 귀족이 자기 아들들을 모아놓고

An ancient noble of China gathered his sons together.

누가 가장 잘 지내고 있는지 모르겠는데

I don't know who is doing the best.

지혜롭나 영향을 테스트하기 위해서

To test wisdom and influence.

복잡하게 얽힌 실타래를 하나씩 나눠줬습니다

I distributed the tangled threads one by one.

이것을 한번 풀어봐라

Try solving this once.

그랬더니 그냥 눈에 충혈이 되도록 열심히 하는데

Then, they were just working so hard that their eyes turned red.

하나를 풀면 더 복잡해지고 결국 못하고 있는데

If I solve one thing, it gets more complicated and in the end, I can't do it.

둘째 아들이 나타나더니

Then the second son appeared.

이거를 딱 보더니 칼로 그냥 베어버렸다는 거예요

As soon as they saw this, they just cut it with a knife.

그래서 눈이 휘둥그려져서 그 아버지가 물었으면

네가 왜 이렇게 행동을 하냐 그랬더니

어지러운 것은

많은 경우에요

우리가 떨쳐버려야 되는 것이 우리에게 유익이 있어요

또 내가 원하는 거예요

나는 이것을 원하는데 사실 하나님이 원치 않은 거예요

I want this, but in fact, God doesn't want it.

이것을 통해서 하나님이 더 멀어질 수 있고

Through this, God can become more distant.

옳은 것도 있고 또 복잡하게 뭐 장단점이 있지만은

There are right things, and there's a complex mix of pros and cons, but...

결국은 나에게 유익하지 않은 거예요

그러나 그것을 우리가 스스로 정당화 한다든지

However, we justify it ourselves.

우리가 합리화 한다든지

그래서 끊지 못하는 것이 있을 수 있습니다

So there may be things that you can't let go of.

그러나 하나님이 오늘 우리에게 유익한 것을

However, what is beneficial for us today from God

하나님에게 그것을 끊으라고 하실 수 있어요

You can tell God to stop it.

우리가 표현해서는 안 되는 감정이 있습니다

There are emotions that we should not express.

크리스찬으로서 우리가 옮기지 말아야 될 말이 있어요

There are things we shouldn't say as Christians.

또 품지 않아야 될 욕망이 있습니다

There is a desire that should not be harbored again.

그리고 우리가 그 욕망을 품지 않아야 될 욕망이 있습니다

And there are desires that we should not harbor.

그런 많은 것들이 우리 삶을 복잡하게 얽히게 만들어요

So many things make our lives complicated.

그러나 여러분 정말 하나님께서 오늘 우리에게 말씀하시는 것이 있다면

However, if God is truly speaking to us today,

그것을 끊어버릴 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다

I hope to be able to cut it off.

그것이 절제의 적극적인 의미예요

That is the active meaning of moderation.

자 근데 문제는 이게 쉽지 않다라는 것이죠

또 무엇을 또 어떻게 끊어야 될지 잘 모르겠어요

I'm not sure what else I should cut off or how to do it.

근데 그것보다도 더 중요한 것은

이 절제를 함에 의해서는

그 주체가 무엇인가를 먼저 생각해 보는 것입니다

많은 경우 이 절제의 문제에 있어서는

내 힘으로 하기 어려운 것이 많습니다

There are many things that are difficult for me to do on my own.

또 내 의지는 있어요

그러나 내 의지가 그것을 절제하기에 충분하지 않아요

늘 실패해요

자 내 의지로 하는 것은 사실은

결국은 우리를 더 절망하게 할 때가 많습니다

그러나 크리천에게 있어서의 절제는 그런 의미가 아니에요

앵콜라테이아라고 하는 단어인데요

앤은 뭐 뭐 아내, 인입니다

크라토스가 무슨 뜻이냐면

지배예요 지배, 지배하다

그러니까 이것이 기독교적인 의미에서는

So this has a Christian meaning.

우리가 예수를 믿음으로 성령님이 내 안에 들어와서

By believing in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes into me.

내 삶의 주인이 됐잖아요

You have become the master of my life.

그분이 지배하시는 거예요

He is in control.

내 삶이 그분의 나라가 되는 것입니다

My life becomes His kingdom.

그분이 주권을 가시고 그분이 통치하시는 거예요

He has sovereignty and He rules.

그러니까 내 의지로 내 노력으로 내 힘으로 하는 것이 아니라

So it's not about doing it with my will, my effort, or my strength.

그분이 나를 지배하심으로 내 삶에 이루어지는 것이 절제이고

By His rule over me, what is achieved in my life is restraint.

심지어는 내가 내 의지를 가지고 결단했다 할지라도

Even if I made a decision with my own will.

그 뒤에 성령님이 이루어지는 거예요

After that, the Holy Spirit is realized.

일하심이 있다라는 것을 인정하는 것

Acknowledging that there is work being done

그것이 크리스찬에게 있어서 절제입니다

That is restraint for Christians.

여러분 성령님은요

Everyone, the Holy Spirit is...

인격적인 분이십니다

He is a person of character.

많은 분들이 성령님을 어떤 비인격적인 힘이나 에너지로 착각하시는 분이 있어요

Many people confuse the Holy Spirit with some impersonal force or energy.

그러나 성령님은 삼위일체 하나님으로서 우리와 관계하시고

However, the Holy Spirit, as a member of the Trinity, relates to us.

우리를 위해서 탄식하시기도 하시고

You sigh for us.

우리를 위해서 우리를 긍휼히 여기시고

Have mercy on us for our sake.

우리를 도와주시는 인격적인 분이에요

He is a personal being who helps us.

그래서 우리에게 강압적으로 하시지 않습니다

So you don't force us.

우리를 막 세뇌시키려고 하시는 분이 아니에요

He's not someone trying to brainwash us.

그분은 우리를 도와주시는 분이십니다

He is the one who helps us.

그리고 나를 인도하시는 분이에요

And He is the one who leads me.

이 성령님께서 오늘 우리의 삶에 일하실 때

When the Holy Spirit works in our lives today

어떻게 보면 성령님은요

되게 인격적이기도 하시지만

You are quite personal.

때로는 좀 수줍어하시는 것 같기도 하고

Sometimes you seem a bit shy.

자기 자신을 잘 안 드러내세요

Don't reveal yourself too much.

어떻게 보면 내가 내 의지로 내 결정으로 하는 것 자체도

In a way, even the act of making my own decisions by my own will...

성령님께서 자기 자신을 잘 드러내시지 않기 때문에

Because the Holy Spirit does not reveal Himself well.

우리 스스로 착각할 때도 있는 것 같아요

I think there are times when we deceive ourselves.

한 심리학 연구가 있었는데요

There was a psychological study.

예전 중국에서 모택동의 집권 시절에

During the time of Mao Zedong's rule in old China

거기 중국에 있었던 25명의 서양인들을 대상으로 한 연구가 있었어요

There was a study involving 25 Westerners who were in China.

그 중에 13명은 성교사였어요

Among them, 13 were missionaries.

그런데 이 사람들이 공산당이나 어떤 공산당 이론이나

However, these people either the Communist Party or any communist theory or...

공산당을 찬양하거나 이런 것에 동의하지 않죠

I don't agree with praising the Communist Party or anything like that.

그러니까 공산당이 이 사람들을 체포해서 감옥에 가뒀어요

So the Communist Party arrested these people and put them in jail.

그리고 이 공산당 이념을 세뇌시키기 위해서

And in order to brainwash this communist ideology

그들에게 계속적인 질문을 했습니다

I kept asking them questions.

그래서 그 질문에 동의하면 괜찮은데

So it's okay if you agree with that question.

동의하지 않고 또 공산당에 반대하면

If you do not agree and also oppose the Communist Party.

매질을 하고 또 며칠 밤이든 재우지 않는 그런 고문을 했어요

They inflicted beatings and tortured me by not letting me sleep for several nights.

그런데 그 중에 끝까지 버틴 사람은 3년을 버텼다고 합니다

However, it is said that among them, the person who held on until the end endured for three years.

그런데 결국은 다 자술서를 쓰고

But in the end, everyone ended up writing a testimony.

내가 말했던 거, 내가 행동했던 거 다 잘못했다고 하고

I said everything I did was wrong.

그리고 공산당의 이론이나 주장을 다 받아들이게 됐어요

And I ended up accepting all the theories and claims of the Communist Party.

강제로 된 것이죠

It was done by force.

그리고 나서 상황이 바뀌어 가지고

And then the situation changed.

이 사람들이 풀려나고 석방되고

These people are released and set free.

자기 고국으로 왔습니다

I have come back to my home country.

그리고 그 사람들 중에 그때는 그렇게 세뇌됐는데

And among those people, at that time, they were so brainwashed.

그 공산당의 생각과 이념을 계속 유지한 사람이 있느냐

Is there anyone who continues to maintain the thoughts and ideology of that Communist Party?

한 명도 없었다는 거예요

It means there wasn't a single person.

다시 말하면 성령님께서 뭔가 우리의 삶을 변화시키시고

In other words, the Holy Spirit transforms something in our lives.

그분의 원하시는 대로 우리를 인도하시고

He guides us as He wishes.

또 그분이 내 삶에 계획하신 것을 이루시는 이 모든 과정 속에요

It's all part of the process in which He fulfills the plans He has for my life.

하나님은 우리를 세뇌시키지 않으세요

God does not brainwash us.

우리에게 하나씩 가르쳐 주세요

Please teach us one by one.

그리고 우리가 그렇게 할 수 있도록 도와주세요

And please help us to be able to do that.

우리 뒤에서 일하세요

Please work behind us.

그리고 우리에게 그런 힘을 주십니다

And He gives us such strength.

제임스 휴스턴이라고 하는 한 신학자가

A theologian named James Houston

성령님에 대한 연구를 몇 년 동안 하고 책을 냈습니다

I have been studying the Holy Spirit for several years and have published a book.

근데 그 성령님에 대한 그런 수많은 연구와

But there are so many studies about the Holy Spirit.

또 교류를 살피고 성경을 연구하고

Also examine the exchanges and study the Bible.

그리고 많은 논의와 세미나를 통해서

And through a lot of discussions and seminars

그가 내린 결론은 딱 두 글짜리예요

His conclusion is just two characters.

성령님은 친구다

The Holy Spirit is a friend.

그분은 인격이시고

He is a person of character.

그분은 나에게 뭔가를 강요하시는 분이 아니라

He is not someone who forces something on me.

늘 내 옆에 계시고 나와 공감대를 가지시고

Always being by my side and sharing a sense of empathy with me.

나를 격려하고 나를 칭찬하고

Encourage me and praise me.

내가 정말 좋은 데로 길로 갈 수 있도록

So that I can really go on a good path.

나를 인도하고 도와주는 도움을 주는

Guiding and helping me.

나를 위해서 기도하는 그런 친구와 같은 분이다라는 것입니다

They are like a friend who prays for me.

여러분 그 성령님이

Everyone, that Holy Spirit...

저와 여러분 가운데 이미 계십니다

He is already among you and me.

또 우리 안에서 일하고 계세요

You are also working within us.

그리고 오늘 우리가 무엇을 줄여야 되는지

And today, what we need to reduce.

무엇을 끊어야 되는지

What should I cut off?

무엇을 절제해야 되는지

What needs to be restrained?

하나님께서 저와 여러분의 삶을 인도하고 계신 걸 믿습니다

I believe that God is guiding my life and yours.

아멘을 너무 절제하시는 건 아닌가요?

Aren't you being too restrained with your "Amen"?

자 근데 성령님이 오늘 우리의 삶을 인도하시는 데 있어서

Well, the Holy Spirit is guiding our lives today.

또 특별히 절제를 하게 하시는 데 있어서

Moreover, in terms of encouraging moderation specifically,

어떻게 우리 삶에서 일하고 계시는가

How are you working in our lives?

물론 뭐 여러 가지가 있을 수 있고

Of course, there could be various things.

또 성경에도 여러 가지 이야기들이 있지만

이 부분에 대해서 사도바울이 얘기하는 것을

운동장에서 다름질하는 자들이 다 달릴지라도

Even if those who are running on the field all run.

오직 상을 받는 사람은 한 사람인 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐

Don't you know that only one person receives the prize?

너희도 상을 받도록 이와 같이 다름질하라

Run in such a way that you may obtain the prize.

이 길을 다투는 자마다 모든 일에 절제하나니

"All who compete in the race exercise self-control in all things."

그들은 썩을 승리자의 관을 얻고자 하되

They seek to obtain the crown of the decaying victor.

우리는 썩지 아니할 것을 얻고자 하노라

We seek to obtain that which is incorruptible.

다름질하는 사람들이 다 달리고 있는데

Everyone who is running is running differently.

왜 달리냐는 거예요 목적이 있으니까

Why do you run? Because there's a purpose.

목표지가 있으니까 거기에서 승리하기 위해서

Because there is a target, in order to win there.

상급을 받기 위해서 달리는 거잖아요

You're running to receive a promotion, right?

그러니까 그 목표를 위해서 모든 것을 절제한다

So, for that goal, I restrain everything.

사도바울에게 있어서는 그의 삶에 주신

For the apostle Paul, the life given to him was...

정말 감당하지 못할 그런 아름다운 비전이 있었습니다

There was a truly overwhelming and beautiful vision.

사도바울을 통해서는 그의 삶에 주신

Through Apostle Paul, the life that was given to him

정말 죄인이었고요 개수였던 그에게

He was truly a sinner and a dog.

이방인 성교를 위해서 맡겨주신 그 직품과 그 소명은

The mission and calling you entrusted to me for foreign intercourse is

세상에 무엇과도 바꿀 수 없는 것이에요

It is something that cannot be exchanged for anything in the world.

그것이 삶의 목표였습니다

That was the goal of my life.

그러니까 사도바울이 배운 것도 많고 가진 것도 많고

So, the Apostle Paul had learned a lot and had a lot.

뭔가 누릴 수 있었음에도 불구하고

Despite being able to enjoy something.

그것을 다 내려놓고 모든 것을 절제하는 것은

Letting it all go and practicing restraint in everything is

내가 썩지 않을 멸관을 받기 위해서다

It is to receive a crown that will not wither.

그 목표를 위해서 내가 절제하는 것이다

I am exercising restraint for that goal.

라고 하는 것을 지금 얘기하고

하나님께서 우리로 하여금 어떻게 절제를 하게 하시냐면요

God teaches us how to practice self-control.

우리 삶에 더 가치 있는 목표를 주세요

Give us a more meaningful goal in our lives.

하나님이 내 삶을 통해서 원하시는 내 삶의 영광이 있습니다

There is a glory in my life that God desires through my life.

하나님이 내 삶의 계획하신 거룩한 하나님의 계획이 있어요

God has a holy plan for my life.

자 그 목표를 주신 그 목표를

Now, that goal you gave.

내가 그것을 알 때 그것이 얼마나 가치 있는 것을 알고

When I realize that, I know how valuable it is.

이것을 통해서 정말 하나님께서 내 삶을 얼마나 위대하게 만드실지

Through this, I wonder how greatly God will make my life.

그 믿음의 기대를 갖는 사람은 오늘 절제할 수 있습니다

A person who has the expectation of that faith can exercise self-control today.

우리 아이들이 요즘 셀폰 너무 많이 보죠

Our children are looking at their cell phones too much these days.

게임 너무 많이 하고

Playing too many games.

근데 이 행동만을 제재하려고 하면 금방 고쳐지지 않습니다

However, if you only try to penalize this behavior, it won't be fixed quickly.

사실 이 절제는 내가 이것을 안 하느냐

In fact, this restraint means that I don't do this.

내가 이것을 안 하느냐는 것입니다

The question is whether I will not do this.

어떤 그 행위 자체의 문제가 아니고

It is not a problem with the act itself.

내가 이것을 내려놓을 수도 있을 만한

I might be able to put this down.

더 가치 있고 더 중요한 목표를 가지고 있는가

Do you have more valuable and important goals?

그것이 중요해요

That's important.

절제의 문제는 내가 무언가를 안 하는가의 문제이기 전에

The issue of restraint is more about whether I am not doing something before it becomes an issue.

무언가를 하기 위해서 내가 이것을 절제하는가의 문제입니다

It is a matter of whether I restrain this in order to do something.

그러니까 무엇을 하느냐가 전제가 되어야지

So what you do has to be the premise.

무엇을 안 하느냐가 힘을 발휘할 수가 있어요

What you choose not to do can also have power.

여러분 혹시 우리 삶에서

Everyone, perhaps in our lives...

절제가 힘들다면

If self-control is difficult,

나는 왜 이렇게 의지력이 없지

Why do I have such a weak willpower?

나는 왜 이렇게 하는 일마다 다 포기하지

Why do I give up on everything I do like this?

여러분 그 절제의 문제가 아니라

Everyone, it's not a matter of moderation.

그 그림을 크게 보십시오

나에게 그런 목표가 없는 것은 아닌가

Don't I have such a goal?

정말 하나님께서 나의 삶을 통해서 이루려고 하시는

What God is truly trying to achieve through my life.

그 소명을 내가 분명히 알고 있는가

Do I clearly know that calling?

아니 소명을 알고 있지만

No, I know the mission, but...

이게 흔들리고 있기 때문에

Because this is shaking.

내 삶이 절제가 되지 않는 것은 아닌가

Isn't it that my life lacks restraint?

오늘 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 듣고

Today, we hear the word of God.

또 기도하고 하나님과 교제하고

Also pray and commune with God.

주님의 뜻을 알아갈수록

As I come to understand the Lord's will more and more.

하나님이 내 삶에서 무엇을 이루기를 원하시는지가

What God wants to accomplish in my life is

더 분명해집니다

It becomes clearer.

그것이 안 될 때 그것이 없을 때

When it cannot be done, when it is not there.

그냥 눈에 보이는 가체들을 무조건 흡수하게 되는 거예요

It just absorbs the objects that are visible.

남들이 가지니까 나도 저걸 더 많이 가져야 돼

Since others have it, I need to have more of that too.

거기 절제가 이루어질 수 없어요

There can be no moderation there.

남들이 하니까는 나의 목표와 내 인생의 비전과

Because others are doing it, my goals and my vision for life...

하나님의 계획과는 상관없이

Regardless of God's plan

그냥 눈 앞에 보이는 새 속의 가치를 취하다 보니

I just take the value of the birds I see right in front of me.

중독의 폭발을 받는다

Experiencing an explosion of addiction.

그것을 절제하지 못하고

Unable to restrain it.

그러다 방향을 잃어버리는 것입니다

Then you lose your direction.

오늘 우리가 오늘까지 아홉 번에 걸쳐서

Today, we have done it nine times so far.

갈라데아서 5장 22절 23절을 읽었습니다

I read Galatians 5:22-23.

근데 이 성령의 열매가 주어진

But this fruit of the Spirit is given.

조금 더 구체적인 맥락을 볼 필요가 있어요

그러기 위해서는 그 앞구절과 뒷구절에

Such as debauchery and things like that.

전에 너에게 경계한 것 같이 경계하느니

I will be cautious as I warned you before.

이런 일을 하는 자들은

Those who do such things

하나님의 나라를 유옵으로 받지 못할 것이오

You will not receive the kingdom of God as an inheritance.

어떤 의미냐면 그 앞에 육체의 일이 있다

What it means is that there is the work of the flesh before that.

크리스찬으로서는 해서는 안 되는 일이 있다

There are things that a Christian should not do.

그러면서 쭉 열거하죠

And then I keep listing them.

그러니까 이것은 우리가 끊어야 되고

So we need to break this off.

하지 말아야 될 일입니다

It is something that should not be done.

그러니까 이 앞에 내용 자체가

The very one that talks about the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Last week, a certain church member said that.

이 아홉 가지 열매 설교를 듣다 보니까

As I listen to this sermon on the nine fruits,

모든 걸 다 참으라는 얘기네요

It means that you should endure everything.

근데 그 맥락이 맞습니다

But that context is correct.

결국 이런 것들이 어떻게

In the end, how do these things happen?

우리 삶으로부터 멀어질 수 있을 것인가

Can we drift away from our lives?

그런데 여기 나온 표현 중요한 표현은 뭐냐면

However, the important expression that appears here is what?

너희가 그것을 행하는 가운데 어떻게 되냐면

What will happen as you carry it out is

하나님 나라의 유업을 받지 못한다

Will not inherit the kingdom of God.

하나님 나라라고 하는 것은

What is called the Kingdom of God is

이런 것을 행하면 잘못하면 다 지옥 간다

If you do something like this, you might end up in hell if you're not careful.

라고 하는 의미가 아니라

It doesn't mean that.

오늘 내 삶에서 이루어진

Today, something achieved in my life.

하나님 나라의 계획들이 있지 않습니까?

Aren't there plans for the Kingdom of God?

저와 여러분에게 하나님께서 원하시는

What God desires for me and for you.

그런 소명이 있지 않습니까?

Isn't there such a calling?

우리 삶의 거룩한 목표가 있지 않습니까?

Isn't there a sacred goal in our lives?

하나님께서 내 삶을 통해서

God, through my life

내 은사와 내 경험과 나의 모든

My mentor, my experiences, and all of me.

내 삶을 통해서 주님께서 인도하시는

The Lord guides through my life.

그 계획

That plan.

그 계획이

That plan.

그 계획으로부터 멀어지게 된다는 거예요

It means you're drifting away from that plan.

거룩한 목표가 사라진다는 것입니다

It means that the sacred goal disappears.

그러니까 이 목표를 갖고

So with this goal in mind.

이 목표를 추구하는 것과

Pursuing this goal and

오늘의 나의 절제는

My restraint today is

너무나 밀접하게

So closely.

연관을 가지고 있습니다

It is related.

사랑하는 여러분

Dear beloved

저와 여러분에게

To me and you.

그 하나님의 계획이

That God's plan

더욱더 선명해지기를 축복합니다

I祝福你变得更加清晰。

그것을 위해서라면

For that purpose.

내가 오늘 절제할 수 있지 않습니까?

Can I not exercise restraint today?

마치 제가

As if I...

저는 한 달 뒤에 돌아올 때

I will return in a month.

몸무게를 10파운드를 빼서 오겠습니다

I will lose 10 pounds and come.

진짜로 하겠다는 건 아니고요

I'm not really saying that I will do it.

뭐 그냥 이 정도면 되지 않겠습니까?

Well, isn't this enough?

똥배는 좀 나왔지만은 좀 빼고

I have a bit of a belly, but I’ll try to lose some.

근데 뭔가 이렇게

But somehow like this

제 목표를 만약에 여러분께 말씀드린다면

If I were to tell you my goal,

그 목표를 위해서

For that goal.

제가 안 해야 되는 것이 있잖아요

There are things I shouldn’t have to do.

제가 좋아하는 아이스크림 먹지 않고

Not eating the ice cream I like.

햄버거 먹지 않고

Without eating a hamburger.

운동도 열심히 하고

I also work out hard.

자 그런 절제와

Well, such restraint and

이 목표가 갖게 되는

This goal that is possessed.

그 접점에서

At that point of contact.

하나님 나라의 소명이

The calling of the kingdom of God.

나에게 다가오기 시작합니다

It begins to come closer to me.

그 나라의 유업을 받겠느냐

Will you inherit the legacy of that country?

받지 못하겠느냐

Can't you accept it?

그러니까 단지

So just

뭐 하냐 안 하냐의 문제가 아니에요

It's not a matter of whether to do it or not.

이거 하니까 잘했고

I did well because I did this.

아니면 안 하니까 잘못했고

Otherwise, I won't do it, so I was wrong.

교회 가면 늘 그게 듣는 말인데

그런 얘기 안 해서 좋습니다

Some people say that.

근데 저는

But I...

술을 먹으면 죄인이고

If you drink alcohol, you are a sinner.

술을 안 먹으면 더 의인이고

If you don't drink, you're more of a hero.

그 정도의 논의에서

In that level of discussion.

크리스찬이 머물지 않겠는가

Will Christian not stay?

그렇게 생각하시기 위함입니다

It is to make you think that way.

그것은 좀 더 큰 의미가 있어요

It has a deeper meaning.

좀 더 넓은 의미가 있어요

It has a broader meaning.

절제는요

Moderation is important.

선교적 의미를 갖습니다

It has a missional significance.

Moderation is missionary.

더 넘어서 하나님과의 관계에 있어서

Beyond that, in the relationship with God.

영적인 의미를 가져요

It has a spiritual meaning.

제가 여러 번 말씀드렸지만

As I've mentioned several times,

저는 고등학교 때 술을 끊었습니다

I quit drinking when I was in high school.

그랬더니 제 친구들이 놀라더라고요

Then my friends were surprised.

아니 내가 너한테 술 배웠는데

No, I learned how to drink from you.

네가 끊냐?

Are you hanging up?

아니 내가 너한테 술 배웠는데 네가 끊냐?

No, I taught you how to drink, and now you're quitting?

그러더니 이제 친구들이 저를 막 이렇게

Then my friends started to do this to me.

뭐라고 뭐라고 그러더라고요

They were saying something like this and that.

근데 친구들은 저를 별로 안 좋아했는데

But my friends didn't really like me.

그 친구들의 엄마들이 저를 좋아하는 거예요

The moms of those friends like me.

그래서 어떻게 고등학생인데

So how come you're a high school student?

벌써 술을 끊었냐

Have you already quit drinking?

신기하게 여겨주시기도 하고

You find it fascinating.

근데 그러고 나서요

But after that...

그 엄마들이 저를 좀 믿어주시더라고요

Those moms seem to trust me a bit.

그러면서 보통 친구들이 저를 믿어주시기도 하고

In doing so, my friends usually trust me as well.

그래서 친구들이 저를 믿어주시더라고요

So my friends trust me.

친구들이 어디 나간다 그러면

When my friends say they're going out,

너 누구랑 노니?

Who are you playing with?

몇 시에 들어오니?

What time are you coming in?

그렇게 잔소리를 많이 하시는데

You complain a lot like that.

저랑 논다고 하면

If you say you’ll play with me

그냥 다 허락해 주시고

Just allow everything.

늦게 들어와도 괜찮다고 하고

It's okay to come in late.

친구들 중에서는 저랑 같이 있지 않으면서도

Among my friends, there are those who are not with me, but...

엄마한테는 저랑 같이 있다고 거짓말하는 친구도 생겼었어요

I also had a friend who lied to my mom that they were with me.

여러분 우리의 절제는요

Everyone, our moderation is...

단지 나의 옳고 그름 차원에서만 이루어지는 것이 아닙니다

It is not just something that takes place solely within the dimension of my right and wrong.

거기에는 선한

There is good.

영향력이 있어요

It has influence.

로마시대의 크리스찬에게 바로 이 절제란 그런 의미였습니다

For Christians in the Roman era, this self-discipline had such meaning.

크리스찬은 달랐어요

Christian was different.

여러분 이 절제가 처음에 우리가 얘기했듯이

As we mentioned at the beginning, everyone, this moderation...

요즘은 인기 있는 동목이 아닙니다

It is not a popular species these days.

그러다 보니까 귀해요

That's why it's precious.

그러다 보니까 티가 납니다

As a result, it becomes noticeable.

크리스찬의 절제는 바로 여기에서 시작해요

로마시대의 절제는 바로 여기에서 시작해요

The moderation of the Roman era begins right here.

로마시대의 크리스찬들이 대부분 가난했습니다

Most Christians during the Roman era were poor.

자기네들이 먹고 싶은 것, 자기네들이 취하고 싶은 것이 있음에도 불구하고

Despite having things they want to eat and things they want to do.

그것을 내려놓고 남을 도왔어요

I put that down and helped others.

로마시대의 향락에 빠지고 성공만을 추구하고 그랬던 사람들에게는

For those who were caught up in the pleasures of the Roman era and sought only success,

이것이 너무나 다른 것이었습니다

This was so different.

몇 번 말씀드렸지만 로마시대의 귀족들이요

As I mentioned several times, it is the nobles of the Roman era.

성적으로 너무나 문란했습니다

I was very promiscuous.

그런데 자기의 아들에게는

However, to his son

그들만은 문란한 여성과 결혼시키고 싶지 않아 했어요

They didn't want to marry off their sons to promiscuous women.

특히 귀족들이

Especially the nobles.

그러니까 어떻게 했습니까?

So what did you do?

수천여, 처녀들을 찾았는데

I searched for thousands of virgins.

처녀들은 기독교인 외에는 없었어요

There were no virgins except for Christians.

그러니까 기독교인 처녀가 귀족 가문에 들어가게 된 것입니다

So, a Christian virgin ended up entering an aristocratic family.

그래서 거기서 자녀를 낳고 자녀를 믿음으로 키우게 되고

So there, they give birth to children and raise them in faith.

그 아이가 신앙을 갖게 되고

That child comes to have faith.

사회에서 영향력이 있게 되고

Becoming influential in society.

로마가 기독교인으로서는

As a Christian, Rome is

기독교를 경인하게 되고

Became deep in Christianity.

나중에는 국교가 된 그 모든 배경에는

The background behind all of that, which later became the national religion, is...

크리스찬의 절제가 있었어요

There was Christian restraint.

성적으로 순결하다 보니까

Because I am sexually pure,

그 당시에 로마 사람들이요

At that time, the Romans.

이런 성적으로 문란했기 때문에

Because it was immoral due to such behavior.

이 영하유기를 하는 일들이 너무 많았습니다

There were too many things to do in this negative environment.

크리스찬에는 그런 일이 없었어요

That didn't happen to Christian.

달랐습니다

It was different.

티가 났어요

It showed.

그것이 절제의 능력이었어요

That was the ability of restraint.

그것이 선한 영향력이 되었고

It became a positive influence.

그것으로 인해서 하나님의 영향력이 되었고

It became a influence of God because of that.

그것으로 인해서 하나님의 나라가 확장될 수 있었던 것

Through that, the kingdom of God was able to expand.

그것으로 인해서 하나님 나라의 유업이

Through that, the inheritance of the Kingdom of God.

각 개인에게 또 당시에 크리스찬에게 나타날 수 있었던 것

What could have appeared to each individual and to Christians at that time.

그 안에는 그 핵심에는 바로 절제가 있었던 것입니다

At its core, there was indeed moderation.

저는 저와 여러분이 절제를

I hope that you and I exercise moderation.

이런 큰 그림 안에서 받아들일 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다

I hope you can accept this within such a larger context.

하나님이 저와 여러분을 향해서

God towards me and you.

가지신 그 소망을 여러분 잊지 마십시오

Do not forget the hope you hold.

저는 저와 여러분이 절제를 이런 큰 그림 안에서 받아들일 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다

I hope that both you and I can accept moderation within this larger context.

그리고 오늘 내 삶이 단지 내 개인적인 삶을 넘어서

And today, my life goes beyond just my personal life.

이 하나님 나라를 위해서 하나님 나라의 유업을 위해서

For the kingdom of God and for the inheritance of the kingdom of God.

하나님의 계획 가운데 있음도 분명히 기억하십시오

Please remember that you are definitely in God’s plan.

그분의 기대를 저버리지 아니하고

Not disappointing his expectations.

그렇다고 자기의 의에 빠지는 것도 아니고

That doesn't mean falling into one's own righteousness.

그렇다고 율법주의에 빠지는 것도 아니고

It doesn't mean falling into legalism either.

그러나 방종에 빠지지도 않는

But also not succumbing to indulgence.

바로 이 갈라디아에서 얘기하고자 했던

This is what I wanted to talk about right here in Galatia.

그 자유의 의지에 빠지는 것도 아니고

It's not about falling into the will of that freedom.

그 자유함 가운데 성령님의 지배를 받으십시오

In that freedom, be governed by the Holy Spirit.

여러분 절제는요 그런 의미에서 대박입니다

Everyone, moderation is a big deal in that sense.

우리가 절제할 때 하나님께서 우리 삶을 통해서

When we exercise self-control, God works through our lives.

그분의 뜻을 펼쳐주실 줄 믿습니다

I believe you will unfold His will.

하나님의 놀라운 일들이 일어나게 될 거예요

God's amazing things will happen.

여러분의 자녀를 통해서도 하나님의 꿈이 나타날 것입니다

God's dream will be revealed through your children.

절제로서 그 하나님의 선하고 아름답고 영광스러운 계획에

As a restraint to that good, beautiful, and glorious plan of God.
