저는 동해만 좋다고 생각했거든요.

I only thought that the East Sea was nice.

근데 저번에 남해에 갔어요.

But I went to Namhae the other day.

남해에.

In the South Sea.

저희 또 아버님 고향이 남해다 보니까

Our father's hometown is also Namhae.

남해 쪽에 갔는데 거기 다리로 이렇게 섬을 연결해놨어요.

I went to the Namhae area, and there they have connected the islands with bridges like this.

섬과 섬을 연결해서 여수까지 이렇게 연결이 돼 있거든요.

The islands are connected like this all the way to Yeosu.

그래서 그 길을 이렇게 쭉 드라이브로 하는...

So, driving along that road like this...

그런데 정말 기가 막히더라고요.

But it was really amazing.

여기가 거의 진짜 누가 만들어놓은 것처럼

It looks almost like it's really been made by someone.

거기가 다도에다 보니까 섬이 굉장히 작은 섬들이 굉장히 많은 거죠.

Because it is a tea region, there are many very small islands there.

그래서 이렇게 드라이브를 하다 보면

바다 사이에 그렇게 섬들이 하나씩 있는데

There are islands one by one between the seas.

너무 멋있는 거예요.

It's so cool.

그래서 남해봐도 되게 매력이 있다라는 생각을 하고 왔죠.

저 남해 못 가봤는데 가보고 싶은 곳 중에 하나예요.

I haven't been to Namhae, but it's one of the places I want to visit.

굉장히 고급진 숙소인가봐요.

강릉 바다가 제일 파랗고 깊고.

The sea in Gangneung is the bluest and deepest.

왜 깊은 곳을 좋아하시는 거예요?

그러면 또 깊은 바다가 매력이 또 있는 것 같아요.

Then I think the deep sea has its own charm as well.

관람하는 바다죠.

감당할 필요가 없는 바다잖아요.

수영을 할 줄 알면 내가 어느 선까지 감당할 수 있겠다라는 게 더 그려질 것 같아요.

그래서 너무 깊은 바다는 내가 어차피 가지 못하는 바다니까 좀 더 싫지 않을까?

감당할 수 있는 바다 얘기를 해가지고.

수영도 안 하는 주제에 그런 얘기를 했네요.

두 분 다 이렇게 휴가지로 바다를 얘기해 주셨는데 정확히 오늘 저희는 바다로 떠날 거거든요.

Both of you have talked about the sea as a vacation spot, and actually, we are leaving for the sea today.

바다에 갈 건데 또 바다에 그냥 가기에는 조금 너무 준비가 안 됐잖아요.

I'm going to the ocean, but I'm a little unprepared to just go to the ocean like that.

그래서 오늘 가는 바다는 그냥 바다는 아니고 오늘 갈 바다에 대한 시에 나오는 시어들로 조금 힌트를 드리자면

So the sea we are going to today is not just any sea, and to give you a little hint using words from the poem about the sea we will visit today...

이런 단어들이 등장하는 바다로 갈 겁니다.

저도 굉장히 시에 그런 단어들이 있어서 좋았는데 그냥 바다는 좀 아닐 것 같고

I also liked that there were such words in the poem, but I don't think the sea fits that well.

어떻게 보면 휴가 얘기를 즐겁게 꺼냈지만 휴가가 좀 어려우신 분들?

In a way, I brought up the topic of vacation happily, but what about those who find it a bit difficult?

휴가라는 걸 어렵게 느끼거나 받아들이시는 분들에게

To those who find it difficult to accept or feel unsure about taking a vacation.

오히려 더 선물이 될 수 있을 것 같은 시들이고요.

먼저 이제 바다에 가기 전에 떠나기 전에 또 그냥 떠나면 안 되니까

First, before going to the sea, I can't just leave without doing anything.

프로로그 격으로 떠나기 전에 모습을 담은 시를 하나 짧게 말씀을 드리고

처음 말씀드릴 시는 이문재 시인의 스트라이크라는 시인데요.

이분이 이제 어디론가 갑자기 떠나게 되는데 이걸 뭐라고 이야기를 하셨냐면

This person suddenly has to leave for somewhere, and what they said about it was...

회사 반대쪽으로 가는 버스를 탔다.

I took the bus going to the opposite side of the company.

23년 만에 처음 있는 일이다.

This is the first occurrence in 23 years.

등 뒤에서 먼 동이 트기 시작했다.

The distant dawn began to break behind me.

스마트폰 전원을 껐다.

I turned off the smartphone.

이대로 가다 기차를 타면 바다가 나오리라.

If we go on like this and take the train, the sea will appear.

느리게 날카로워지는 능선의 눈길을 주다가 문득 내 이름을 불러보았다.

As I slowly glanced at the ridge becoming sharp, I suddenly called out my name.

이문재.

Lee Moon-jae.

부르면 부를수록 낯설어져서 그만두었다.

The more I called, the more unfamiliar it became, so I stopped.

버스를 마주오는 차를 모두 비켜가며 달렸다.

I ran while avoiding all the cars coming towards the bus.

세상의 아침은 세상의 아침에게만 아침이었다.

The morning of the world was only morning for the morning of the world.

스마트폰을 껐는데도 내가 켜지지 않았다.

I turned off my smartphone, but it didn't turn on.

다들 내보냈는데도 내가 들어오지 않았다.

Everyone went out, but I didn't come in.

기차를 두어 번 갈아타면 한국까지 가리라.

If you change trains a couple of times, you'll reach Korea.

라고 하는 시인데.

It's a poem that is said to be.

23년 만에 처음 회사 쪽이 아닌 반대쪽으로 가는 버스를 탔다라고 하고.

"I said it's the first time in 23 years that I took the bus heading in the opposite direction from the company."

기차를 두어 번 갈아타면 한국까지 가리라.

If you transfer trains a couple of times, you will reach Korea.

라고 하면서 어디로 갈지는 모르지만 일단 반대쪽으로 출발하신 것 같아요.

They said they don't know where they're going, but it seems like they've started off in the opposite direction for now.

근데 이 중간에 직접 시인의 이름이 세 번 등장하는 부분이 저는 되게 놀라웠거든요.

But I was really surprised by the part where the poet's name appears three times in the middle.

네.

Yes.

이름을 부를 수는 있는데.

I can call your name.

그런데 그 시인이 자신의 이름을 정말로 불러서 이 시에 쓴 것이 정말 내 이름을 내가 세 번 부른 것 같은 느낌을 또 주기도 하고.

However, the fact that the poet really calls out his own name in this poem also gives me the feeling that I have called my name three times.

또 처음으로 회사 반대편으로 떠나는데 그랬더니 이제 내가 내 이름을 불렀는데도 너무 익숙하지 않은 낯설어진 상황이 된 거죠.

This is the first time I'm leaving on the opposite side of the company, and now, even when my name is called, it has become a situation that feels so unfamiliar.

그래서 이렇게 이런 식으로 떠나게 될 것 같아요.

So it seems like I'm going to leave in this way.

오늘.

Today.

오늘도.

Today too.

왜냐하면 정말 바다로 가는 시의 첫 문장이 너 문득 떠나고 싶을 때 있지?

Because the first line of the poem about going to the sea is, "Don't you sometimes want to leave all of a sudden?"

마른 코딱지 같은 생활 따윈 눈 딱 감고 떼어내고 말이야.

Just close your eyes and get rid of a life that’s like dry boogers.

라고 하면서 시작을 하거든요.

It starts by saying so.

그래서 너 문득 떠나고 싶을 때 있지? 하니까 정말 1초도 망설이지 않고 고개를 끄덕이게 되더라고요.

So there are times when you suddenly want to leave, right? And when I said that, they nodded without hesitating for even a second.

정말 떠나고 싶은데 여기서 그 코딱지가 등장을 합니다.

I really want to leave, but that booger shows up here.

마른 코딱지 같은 생활.

A life like a dry booger.

마른 코딱지 같은 생활 따윈 눈 딱 감고 떼어내고 말이야.

Just close your eyes and get rid of a life that's like dry boogers.

표현이 되게 좋네요.

The expression is really nice.

그래서 이 문제 시인이 회사 반대쪽으로 갔던 것처럼 이 시인도 어떤 곳으로 가는데 이 시인 누구냐면요.

제가 이 시를 보고 모항을 좋아해가지고.

I came to like Mohang after seeing this poem.

여러 번 가셨다고.

한 번 갔는데요.

여러 번 가고 싶은 곳이었나?

Was it a place you wanted to visit multiple times?

맞아요. 제가 여러 계절을 가고 싶다고 얘기한 적이 있었던 것 같아요.

That's right. I think I've mentioned wanting to go through several seasons.

기억력이 좋으시다.

You have a good memory.

그러니까요.

기다만 듣고 계셨군요.

우리 이곳에서 한 얘기는 제가 거의 다 기억하고 있습니다.

그래서 말을 조심해서 들었습니다.

수년 전 여름 휴가를 맞아서

이 시가 떠올라서 모항을 찾아갔던 기억이 있는

I have a memory of visiting the port because this poem came to mind.

모항으로 가는 과정을 또 설명을 해주십니다.

부안읍에서 버스로 30분쯤 달리면

If you drive for about 30 minutes by bus from Buan-eup,

객집밥 먹다가 석삼년만에 제 집에 드는 한량처럼

Like a free-spirited person returning home after three years of eating at other people's houses.

거드럭거리는 바다가 보일 거야.

You will see the swaying sea.

먼 데서 오신 것 같은데 통성명이나 하자고.

You seem to have come from far away, so let's introduce ourselves.

조용하고 깨끗한 방도 있다고.

There is also a quiet and clean room.

바다는 너의 옷자락을 잡고

The sea grabs your hem.

놓아주지 않을지도 모르지.

I might not let go.

그러면 대수롭지 않은 듯 한마디 던지면 돼.

Then you can just throw out a casual remark as if it doesn't matter.

모항에 가는 길이라고 말이야.

I'm saying it's the way to the home port.

모항을 아는 것은 변산의 똥구멍까지

Knowing the port is like knowing the anus of Byeonsan.

속속들이 다 안다는 뜻이거든.

It means to know everything inside and out.

똥구멍도 여기에서 등장을 했는데

The butt hole also made an appearance here.

표현들이 너무 재밌네요.

The expressions are so interesting.

거들먹거린다는 것도 그렇고.

변산 바다에 간 것 같아요.

근데 거기는 이제 거드럭거리는 바다가 있는데

그래서 이제 모항을 안다는 거는

조금만 더 가면 훌륭한 게 나올 거라는

믿기 싫지만 그래도 던져버릴 수 없는 희망이

I don't want to believe it, but still, there is a hope I can't just throw away.

여기까지 우리를 데리고 온 것처럼

As if it has brought us this far.

모항도 그렇게 가는 거야.

That's how you go to the home port, too.

라고 하거든요.

They say it is.

그래서 그 중간에

So in the middle of that

쉬고 싶은 거들어거리는 바다도 있고

There are also seas that want to rest.

조용하고 깨끗한 방도 만날 수 있겠지만

You might encounter quiet and clean rooms as well.

그래도 모항까지 우리는

Still, we are heading to the home port.

그 다음 여정을 가야 하는데

I have to go on the next journey.

모항 가는 길을 또 뭐라고 얘기를 하냐면

Another thing to talk about regarding the way to the port is...

모항 가는 길은 우리들 생이 그래왔듯이

The road to the harbor has been like our lives have always been.

구불구불하지.

It's not winding.

이 길은 말하자면

This road can be said to be

좌편향과 우편향을 극복하는 길이기도 한데

It is also a way to overcome left-wing and right-wing biases.

이 세상에 없는 길을 만드는 싸움에 나섰다가 지친 너는

You, who have fought to create a path that doesn't exist in this world, are exhausted.

너는 비록 지쳤으나 승리하지 못했으나 그러나 지지는 않았지 라고 이야기를 합니다.

You may be tired and have not won, but you have not been defeated.

그래서 이렇게 구불구불한 길을 걸어온 사람에게 이제 모항에 드디어 도착을 하게 되는데

So, the person who has walked along this winding road has finally arrived at their home port.

모항에 도착하면 어떤 풍경이 펼쳐지게 되냐면

When you arrive at the port, what kind of scenery unfolds is...

모항에 도착하면 바다를 껴안고 하룻밤 잘 수 있을 거야.

아니 몸에다 마음을 비벼 넣어 섞는 그런 것을 꼭 누가 시시콜콜 가르쳐줘야 하나?

Do we really need someone to teach us the trivial details of how to blend our bodies and hearts together?

걱정하지마. 모항이 보이는 길 위에 서기만 하면 이미 모항이 내 몸속에 들어와 있을 테니까.

Don't worry. As long as you're standing on the path where the home port is visible, the home port will already have entered my body.

라고 하면서 이제 시가 끝이 나는데

They say this, and now the poem comes to an end.

제가 순서를 조금 섞어서 말씀을 드려서

I will speak out of order a bit.

아마 시를 읽어보시면 제가 이야기 드린 것들은

If you read the poem, what I've mentioned will be...

좀 다른 순서로 시가 쓰여져 있어요.

The poem is written in a somewhat different order.

근데 어쨌든 모항이라는 곳은 바다를 껴안고 하룻밤 잘 수 있는 곳이라고 하는데

But anyway, they say that a place called the dock is somewhere you can embrace the sea and spend the night.

그게 어떤 느낌이냐면

It's like that feeling of.

아까 말씀하셨던 그 바다의 어떤 애호하는 포인트가

The favorite point of that sea you mentioned earlier is...

끝없이 펼쳐진 망망대 같은 것들이 있잖아요.

There are things that stretch endlessly like a vast ocean.

근데 이 모항은 여기도 굉장히 섬들이 많은 바다이고 해서

But this port here is also in a sea with a lot of islands.

끝, 그 수평선이 끝없이 펼쳐진 바다는 아니에요.

The end, that's not the ocean with an endlessly stretching horizon.

오히려 강인지 바다인지 좀 구분이 어려울 정도로

Rather, it's somewhat difficult to distinguish whether it's a river or the sea.

작고 좀 아담하고 산들로 좀 둘러싸여 있는

A small and somewhat quaint place surrounded by hills.

그래서 나를 껴안고 잘 수 있다라고 하는 표현도 정말 맞는 것 같은 곳이고

So it feels like it's really a place where you can say you can hold me and sleep.

그래서 승리하지는 못했지만 지지는 않은 그분이 휴가를 왔을 때

So even though he couldn't win, he didn't lose. When he came on vacation.

정말 팔을 이렇게 굽혀서 그 안에 만들어지는 공간 안에

이렇게 품어주는 느낌의 바다라고 느꼈거든요.

그래서 그런 모항에 그 모항으로 가는 길을 또 얘기해 준 시였고요.

또 이걸로 부족할 수 있잖아요.

휴가는 길고 갈 때는 많으니까 또 한 곳을 좀 더 떠나보면

Since vacations are long and there are many times to go, how about leaving for one more place?

이번에는 다시 이제 이문재 시인.

This time, let's return to poet Lee Mun-jae.

네, 이게 돌아와서 향월암이라는 곳입니다.

Yes, this is a place called Hyangwolam that I've returned to.

향월암 아세요?

Do you know Hyangwolam?

몰라요.

I don't know.

모르시는 게 당연하죠.

It's natural that you don't know.

아마도 없는 곳인 것 같아요.

It seems like it might be a place that doesn't exist.

무진 같은 곳이군요.

It's a place like Mujin.

떠오르는 건 있으실 것 같아요.

I think something might come to mind.

이 시가 시작할 때 향월암 가자 하고 시작을 하면서

"Let's go to Hyangwolam as this poem begins."

여수 앞바다 향일암 말고 하거든요.

Instead of Hyoui Temple in the sea in front of Yeosu, it's about something else.

향일암은 유명한 곳이잖아요.

Hyangilam is a famous place, isn't it?

그래요?

Really?

그렇더라고요. 저도 찾아봤어요.

I see. I looked it up too.

제가 향월암이 뭐야 하면서 향월암을 찾으니까

When I asked what Hyangwolam was and looked for it...

그게 자동고침이 돼서 향일암이 나오더라고요.

It auto-corrected to Hyangilam.

여수에 있는 일, 그러니까 동쪽을 보고 있어서

The things in Yeosu, that is, facing the east.

해가 뜨는 걸 볼 수 있는 일출이 굉장히 유명한 그런 장소라고 해요.

I've heard that it's a very famous place for watching the sunrise.

향일암이.

Hyangilam.

동쪽을 향해 있다 이런 건데

It's facing east.

거기 말고 향일암 말고 향월암 가자.

Let's go to Hyangwolaam, not Hyangilam.

그러면서 탁 트인 바다 앞에서 두 눈 찡그리는 해바라기 말고

Instead of a sunflower squinting in front of the vast sea.

무심한 듯 남쪽을 등지고

As if indifferent, turning one's back to the south.

멀리 내륙의 낮은 데를 바라보는

Looking at the low areas inland from afar.

낮에는 더 낮아지고 저녁에도 두 팔 벌려 기지개 켜는 곳

A place that gets lower during the day and stretches out its arms in a yawn in the evening.

높지도 크지도 않고 깊지도 않은 느릿느릿 산의 북면

The gentle northern slope of the mountain, not high, not big, and not deep.

달 우러르기 괜찮은 거기 향월암으로 가자

It's nice to gaze at the moon, let's go to Hyangwolam.

라고 하는데

It is said that.

사실 그 향일암을 향월암으로 바꿔서 만드신 곳일지

In fact, it might be a place that was created by changing Hyangilam to Hyangwolam.

아니면 혹은 진짜로 예전에 사라진 어떤 곳을 말하는 것 같아요.

Or it seems like you are really talking about a place that disappeared long ago.

말씀하시는지는 모르겠으나

I don't know if you're speaking.

향월암 가자고 하네요. 하시네요.

They're saying to go to Hyangwolam.

그러면서 향월암에서 월광욕 가자고 해요.

And then he suggests going to the Hyangwolam for a moonlight bath.

일광욕이 아니라 월광욕 하자.

Let's enjoy moonbathing instead of sunbathing.

그래서

So

내비게이션에 나오지 않는 지도의 바깥

The outside of the map that doesn't appear on the navigation.

터만 남아 웅팡진 절터로 가자.

Let's go to the temple site where the remains are left.

그런 데서 훌러덩훌러덩 벗어버리자.

Let's take it off completely in that place.

난생 처음 우리 큰 대자로 누워보자.

Let's lie down for the first time in our big bed.

밤의 땅이 몸에 두고

With the land of the night resting on my body.

뒤편을 다 받아준 다음에야

Only after receiving everything from the back.

그제야 우리는 달이 보일 것이다.

Only then will we be able to see the moon.

그제야 하늘이 우리를 내려다볼 것이다.

Only then will the sky look down upon us.

라고 얘기하면서

saying that

그래서 아 향월암에 가면 되는구나.

So I just need to go to Hyangwolam.

향일암이 싫으면

If you don't like Hyangilam,

그거를 이제 이 시를 읽으면서 처음 알게 되었어요.

I only realized that while reading this poem.

그러면서 늦봄에서 늦가을까지

Thus, from late spring to late autumn.

눈 쌓인 겨울에도 가보자.

Let's go even in the snowy winter.

새싹 올라오는 초봄에도 가보자.

Let's go in the early spring when the buds are coming up.

달 보기 좋은 달 우러르기 좋은

A beautiful moon to look at, a good moon to gaze upon.

알몸으로 누워 달 바라기 좋은

Lying naked, it's good to gaze at the moon.

느릿느릿 산에 북면

Slowly, the north face of the mountain.

낮에는 찾을 수 없다는 거기

A place that cannot be found during the day.

걸어서만 갈 수 있다는 거기

A place that can only be reached by walking.

혼자서는 갈 수 없다는 거기

A place you can't go alone.

향월암 월광욕 가자.

Let's go to Hyangwolam for moonbathing.

라고 하는 시였는데

It's a poem that is said to be...

그래서 이제 휴가가 어려운 분들에게

So now for those who find it difficult to take a vacation.

사실 이 시를 드리고 싶었던 것은

The reason I wanted to give you this poem is...

저도 휴가가 참 어려웠거든요.

I also found it quite difficult to take a vacation.

아까 모항으로 가는 길이라는 시가

Earlier, there was a poem about the way to the mother port.

시에 보면

In the poem.

이 세상에 없는 길을 만들어 나섰다가

Having set out to create a path that does not exist in this world,

지친 너

Tired you.

그러니까 승리하지 못했지만

So, we didn't win, but...

넌 지지 않았지

You haven't lost, right?

라고 하면서

saying that

그 중간에 누가 이렇게 부르는 일이 있더라도

Even if someone calls out like this in between.

마지막에 모항에 가서 쉬게 되잖아요.

In the end, we get to rest at the home port.

그런 시들을 보면

When I see such poems

그 싸움에 내가

I was in that fight.

내가 그렇게 싸우지 않았어도

Even if I hadn't fought like that.

그 싸움에 상처가 없어도

Even if there are no wounds from that fight.

이 모항이라는 곳이

This place called the port of Mo.

나를 품어줄까

Will you embrace me?

이런 생각도 하게 되고

I also start to have such thoughts.

또 참 휴가는 즐거운 것인데

Well, vacations are enjoyable.

그냥 무작정

Just blindly.

좋다라고 하는 곳에 가면 좋은 걸까

If I go to a place called "good," will it really be good?

마음이 잘 안 동하게 되고

The heart becomes less responsive.

그럴 때에

At that time.

향일암이 싫으면

If you don't like Hyangilam,

향월암으로 만들어서 가도 되고

You can also make it into Hyangwolam.

또 봄에 유명한 곳이지만

It is a famous place again in spring, but...

겨울에 가봐도 좋겠고

It would be nice to visit in the winter too.

이름은 잘 알려지지 않았지만

Though the name is not well known,

그리고 엄청난 일출의 명소도 아니고

And it's not a spectacular sunrise spot either.

먼 바다가 보이지 않지만

I can't see the far sea, but...

그냥

Just.

겨울같은 작은 바다를

A small sea like winter.

구경하는 것만으로도

Just by watching it.

충분할 수도 있을 것 같다

It might be enough.

그런 의미에서

In that sense

오늘 모항으로 가는 길과

Today, on the way to the home port.

향월암이라는 시를

어딘가 나도 모르는

계속 돌아다니고 있었고

I was still wandering around.

머릿속으로

근데 제가 처음에 얘기했던

But what I mentioned at the beginning

망망대와 시마크가 아니었어요

It wasn't Mangmangdae and Simak.

그냥 나도 가본 적 없는

I've never been there either.

어떤 그냥 한국

Just some Korea.

아마도 서해일 것 같은데

It seems like it might be the West Sea.

그런 오밀조밀한

Such intricate

어떤 곳을 돌아다니면서

While wandering around some place

소주도 한잔하고

Let's have a drink of soju.

그런 상상을 계속 했던 것 같아요

I think I kept imagining that.

그걸 하고 싶나봐요 사실은

I guess you really want to do that.

그런 걸

Such things.

이번에는 그런 느낌의

This time, it has that kind of feel.

지금 가고 싶나봐요

휴가 얼마 안 남지 않았나요?

특별히 어떤 여름휴가 시즌이 있는 건 아니고

그냥 이제 뭐

쓰면 되는 거여서

그냥 당장도 가고 싶네요

I want to go right now.

지금도 갔다 오셨잖아요

상상할 수 있다는 것 자체가

The very fact that one can imagine is

그래도 아직 살아있다는 것 같아요

I think I'm still alive, though.

생각을 하게 돼요

I start to think.

그것조차 귀찮을 때가 있잖아요

Sometimes even that can be a hassle, right?

아 무슨 여행은

Oh, what travel?

휴가는 무슨

What vacation?

그냥 잠이나 잤으면 좋겠다

I wish I could just sleep.

이런 생각을 할 때가 있는데

There are times when I think like this.

그러지 않는다는 거 보면

It seems like you won't do that.

백신을 맞으면 꽤 아프시겠다

It must hurt quite a bit to get the vaccine.

생각도 드네요

I think about it too.

잠만 자도 되고요

You can just sleep.

그렇죠 잠만 자도 좋고

That's right, it's good even if you just sleep.

근데 그것조차 약간 그런

But even that is somewhat like that.

열정이 있어야

You need to have passion.

잠도 이렇게 자고 싶다는 생각이

I want to sleep like this too.

열정인 거잖아요

It's passion, isn't it?

그것조차 없을 때가 있을 것 같아요

라는 생각을 하다 보니까

그럴 때 이렇게 또 시를 선물 받으니까
