저번 시간에 말씀드린 것처럼 녹음기를 두 개를 갖고 있는데

마이크와 5인패를 사고 나서는 너무 잘 안 써서

After buying the microphone and the 5-person set, I haven't used them much.

가끔 써야겠다는 생각이 들고요

Sometimes I feel like I need to use it.

음질도 좀 나쁘지는 않은데 더 좋게 설정을 해서 지금 녹음 중입니다

The sound quality isn't too bad, but I'm adjusting it to make it better as I'm recording now.

약간 시험 녹음 해봤는데 혼자 녹음하는 데는 문제가 없을 것 같더라고요

준비를 했느냐 당연히 이제 어른 학전 그리고 지껏 김민기는 제가 한 두 달 전쯤에

김민기 선생이 작고를 하고 나서 그 뉴스를 보고 다큐멘터리를 보게 됐는데

After teacher Kim Min-ki passed away, I saw the news and ended up watching the documentary.

참 재밌게 봤던 것 같아요

이번을 통해서 거의 세 번째로 봤습니다

아무래도 제가 그 청소년기를 부산에서 보내고 대학생이 돼서 서울로 올라온 이후에는

It seems that after I spent my adolescence in Busan and moved up to Seoul as a university student...

사실은 이제 청소년기 때처럼 저를 돌봐주는 어른, 좋은 어른들보다는 뭐 부모님이나 선생님들처럼

The truth is that now, more than caring adults like during my teenage years, I need parents or teachers.

저를 무조건적으로 좋게 봐주시고 사랑해주시는 어른들보다는

Rather than the adults who unconditionally view me in a positive light and love me,

이제 서울에서 만난 어른들은 한 반반인가 그랬던 것 같아요

It seems that the adults I met in Seoul were somewhat half and half.

뭐 좋은 어른 형들 뭐 선배님들 있었지만 약간...

There were some good older brothers and seniors, but...

어... 그런 사람들 말고 이로만 내가 생각했던 어른들의 모습이 아닌

Um... not those kinds of people, but rather a different image of adults that I've been thinking of.

내가 알고 있던 어른들의 모습이 아닌 젊은이들을 돈벌이로 보거나

Not seeing the adults I knew, but rather viewing young people as a means to make money.

뭐 돈벌이가 아니라면 이용해 보려는 그런 나쁜 어른들도 많이 봐서 실망을 했었던 기억이 있고

I have memories of being disappointed because I saw many bad adults who tried to take advantage of it, thinking it wasn't a way to make money.

그 이후로는 사실 이제 어른들이라고 해서 무조건 신뢰하고 말을 들어야겠다라고 생각하기보다는

Since then, I began to think that just because someone is an adult, I shouldn't automatically trust them and listen to what they say.

약간 경계하는 태도로 어른들을 만나고 있거든요

I'm meeting adults with a somewhat cautious attitude.

차라리 또래라면 모르겠고

If it's someone my age, then I might not know.

이렇게 그런 어떤 서울살이 안에서 느낀 뭔가가 있었던 것 같아요

I think there was something I felt within that kind of life in Seoul.

여러가지 뭐 썰이 있지만 이걸 풀면 또 길어지기 때문에 대충 넘어가고

There are various stories to tell, but if I elaborate on this, it will get longer, so I'll just skip over it.

그래요 어쨌든 많은 어떤 실망을 했었던 것 같아요

I guess, anyway, I think I was quite disappointed.

어른으로서 해야 될 일들을 하지 않는 그런 어른들을 많이 봤다라고 생각이 듭니다

I think I have seen many adults who do not do the things they are supposed to do as adults.

그래서 어...

So, um...

김민기 선생님이나 김지영 선생님의 삶을 보니까 오히려 와 이런 어른들이 요즘 세상에도 아직 있구나를 보면서 되게 오히려 감명을 받았던 것 같고요

Seeing the lives of teachers Kim Min-ki and Kim Ji-young, I was actually quite impressed to realize that there are still such adults in today's world.

음 그리고 요즘은 이제 삶이 좀 팍팍하다고 해서

Um, and these days life has been a bit tough.

어 뭐 경제가 어렵다고 해서 주변을 돌아보려고 하는 어떤 사회적인 분위기가 많이 없죠

Well, there isn't much of a social atmosphere of trying to look around just because the economy is tough.

그런 뭐랄까요

Well, how should I put it...

어...

Um...

그냥 나만 내 가족만 내 친한 친구들만 잘 살면 아무 문제 없다라고 생각하는 그런 생각들을 너무 당당하게 말하는 사람들을 요즘에 너무 자주 보게 돼요

I often see people these days who confidently express the thought that as long as just I, my family, and my close friends live well, there’s no problem at all.

사실 그런 말을 할 때 좀 부끄러움을 느낄 수 있는 게 맞지 않나라는 생각도 하는데요

In fact, I also think that it’s natural to feel a bit embarrassed when saying such things.

왜냐하면 이 사회에 살아가는 사람의 대부분은 우리가 이름도 모르고 어떤 사람인지도 모르고

Because most of the people living in this society are ones we don't even know the names of or what kind of people they are.

정보를 모르고

Not knowing the information.

정보를 잘 모르지만 그 모르는 사람들도 우리의 삶에 다 연결이 돼있다고 저는 생각을 하는 편이고

I don’t know much about the information, but I tend to think that even those unknown people are all connected to our lives.

그걸 잊지 않아야 된다고 생각하는데

I think we shouldn't forget that.

그럼에도 요즘에는 너무 이제 자기 주변으로만 시야를 좁혀서 사는 게

Nonetheless, these days people live with their focus narrowed too much to just their surroundings.

뭐 아무런 문제가 없다는 뜻이 얘기가 되어지는 어떤 풍토가 저는 조금 아쉽다라는 생각을 하고 있어서

I feel a bit disappointed that there is an atmosphere where it is said that there are no issues at all.

그래서 좋은 어른에 대한 어떤 모습들을 제가 스스로 좀 보고 싶었나 봐요

So I guess I wanted to see some aspects of a good adult for myself.

근데 이 두 가지 작품...

But these two works...

두 작품을 보면서 좀 충족이 되고 그래서 이야깃거리가 할 말이 많아지게 되는

Watching the two works brings a sense of fulfillment, and it generates a lot of topics to talk about.

그래서 꼭 그래서 이 두 작품을 묶어서 에피소드를 만들어 보기로 했습니다

So, it was decided to combine these two works and create an episode.

먼저 두 작품이 있다고 말씀드렸는데

김주안 기자라는 분이 김장하 선생의 생애에 대해서 말씀드리기 전에

Before the journalist Kim Joo-an speaks about the life of Teacher Kim Jang-ha,

본인을 이렇게 소개했는데

I introduced myself like this.

일단 경남도민일보에서 30년 이상 기자로 일을 했고

First of all, I have worked as a reporter at Gyeongnam Ilbo for over 30 years.

이사로 일하다가 퇴직을 하신 분이고요

They are someone who retired after working in moving services.

본인은 지방토 세력에 대한 붕괴, 가진 자들에 대한 어떤 분노 같은 걸

I have a feeling of anger towards the wealthy and the collapse of regional power.

젊은 시절에 많이 갖고 있었고

I had a lot when I was young.

그것을 바탕으로 많은 기사를 작성했던 사람이라고

I heard that he is someone who has written many articles based on that.

스스로를 소개를 했던 것 같아요

I think I introduced myself.

지방토라는 게 무슨 말이냐 싶으시겠지만

You might wonder what the term "local soil" means, but...

그러니까 고려시대에 나오는 문벌귀족 이런 지방토 세력 이런 거가 있다는 거냐라고 말씀드릴 수 있을 것 같은데

So, I think I can say that there were local landholding powers like the aristocratic families that appeared during the Goryeo Dynasty.

물론 그 시대에 있었던 지방토랑은 다르죠

Of course, the local relationships that existed in that era were different.

근데 지방생활을 해보신 분이 아니라면 잘 실감을 못하실 수도 있는데

But if you haven't experienced living in the countryside, you might not fully understand it.

지방, 지역도시 이런 데 가면 지역토들이 있습니다

If you go to local provinces or regional cities, there are local specialties.

주로 부동산이나 큰 기업을 그 지역에서는 큰 기업을 운영을 하면서

이렇게 많은 어떤 정치적인 능력을 바탕으로 그것을 정치적인 권력과 연결이 되고

어쨌든 김주환 기자가 김장헌 선생을 취재하는 과정을 통해서

김장헌 선생을 이야기하는 다큐인데

It's a documentary about teacher Kim Jang-heon.

김장헌 선생의 생에 대해서 간략하게 얘기를 해보자면

Let's briefly talk about the life of Teacher Kim Jang-heon.

그는 사천시에서 태어났고

He was born in Sacheon.

이 사천에서 중학교까지 졸업을 한 것 같아요

I think I graduated from middle school in this city.

그 당시 나이대는 사실 고등학교 대학교까지 가는 경우가

At that age, in fact, there are cases of going through high school and college.

극히 드물기 때문에

Because it is extremely rare.

지금으로서는 짧은 학력이라고도 말할 수 있지만

It could be said that it is a short education for now.

그 당시에는 평범한 학력이다

At that time, it was an ordinary educational background.

뭐 그러나 사실 우리가 흔히 생각하는

그런데 19살 그러니까 미성년자인데 약제사 시험에 합격을 합니다

However, at 19 years old, which means being a minor, they passed the pharmacist exam.

약간 이제 그 행정적인 미숙이 있어서 위성전자인데도 합격을 시켜준게 된거라고 하더라구요

It seems that there was some administrative inexperience, which is why they ended up letting someone pass even though it was a satellite electronics test.

어쨌든 이제 사천에서 한약방을 열어서 하다가 30살쯤에 진주로 한약방을 이전을 해서

Anyway, I opened a traditional medicine clinic in Sacheon and then around the age of 30, I moved the clinic to Jinju.

지금 2022년까지 한약방 운영하다가 은퇴를 하신 분이구요

He is someone who operated a traditional Korean medicine clinic until his retirement in 2022.

뭐 그렇습니다 주로 이제 이분은 평생 한약방에서 많은 환자들에게 약을 지어주면서

Well, mainly this person has spent their whole life preparing medicine for many patients at a herbal medicine clinic.

진주에서 가장 유명한 한약방, 손님이 끊이질 않았다고 하고 그런 한약방을 꾸준히 운영을 하시면서 모은 재산을 가지고 지역사회에 많은 기여를 하셨는데

The most famous traditional medicine shop in Jinju was said to have non-stop customers, and while steadily running such a shop, they accumulated wealth and made significant contributions to the local community.

뭐 대표적으로는 명신고등학교라는 학교를 만들고 7년 동안 운영해서

"One representative example is the establishment of a school called Myungshin High School, which has been operating for seven years."

정상적인 어떤 운영이 되는 궤도에

On a trajectory where normal operations are taking place.

올려놓은 후에 국가에 헌납을 합니다 뭐 그런 활동을 하셨고

After placing it up, you donate it to the country. That's the kind of activity you engaged in.

그 다음에 진주신문이라고 자립신문 후원을 통해서 운영되는 그런 신문사의 형태였던 것 같은데

It seems like it was a type of newspaper operated through the support of an independent newspaper called Jinju Newspaper.

지금은 없어진 신문이라고 하네요

They say it's a newspaper that no longer exists now.

근데 이제 아무래도 시민들이 자체적으로 만든 신문이다 보니까

But now, since it's a newspaper created by the citizens themselves, it seems...

지역사회에서 아까 말씀드린 토 세력을 견제하는 뭐 그런 식의 신문을

A newspaper that serves to check the local forces I mentioned earlier.

거를 견제하는 신문이었다고 하는데

It is said to be a newspaper that monitors the establishment.

아무래도 이제 그런 쪽에 후원을 해줬다 라고 하시고

뭐 지역에 진주에서 활동하는 극단의 어떤 전세자금을 빌려준다거나 뭐 이런식으로 활동을 하셨다고 합니다

It is said that you have been involved in activities such as lending some funding for a theater company operating in Jinju.

그리고 형평운동 이거 아마 근현대에서 공부하시는 분들을 아마 들어보셨을 수도 있는데

And you may have heard of the equality movement if you study modern and contemporary history.

이제 저울처럼 평등하게 라는 뜻이 형평이라고 하고요.

"Now, the term 'hyeongpyeong' means to be equal like a scale."

그 운동이 진주에서 100년 전쯤에 아주 크게 일었었다고 하는데

They say that movement was very prominent in Jinju about 100 years ago.

주 내용이 뭐냐면 근대화가 되면서 노비지대가 폐지가 됐는데

The main point is that as modernization occurred, the system of serfdom was abolished.

노비지대가 폐지가 됐음에도 불구하고 여전히 남아 있었던 노비에 대한 차별을 철폐하자고 주장했던 운동이라고 하네요

It is said to be a movement that advocated for the abolition of discrimination against slaves, which still existed despite the abolition of the status of slaves.

그 운동의 기념 사업을 좀 지원해서 또 하셨고

They supported the commemoration project of that movement a bit and carried it out again.

그 다음에 가정폭력 피해 여성 쉼터를 만들어서 가정폭력을 가정폭력 때문에 가정에서

마지막에 이제 한약방의 문을 닫기 전에 기념행사 같은 걸 좀 하는데 그래서 평소 한약방을 통해서 김장호 선생님에게 도움을 받았던

At the end, before closing the herbal medicine shop, there will be some kind of commemorative event, and so those who have received help from Teacher Kim Jang-ho through the herbal medicine shop...

그런 사람들이 모여서 김장호 선생님께 축하와 감사의 말씀을 전하는 그런 행사들을 마지막에 좀 보여주거든요

At the end, events will show people gathering to convey their congratulations and gratitude to Teacher Kim Jang-ho.

그리고 한약방이 닫는 날도 보여주는데

And it also shows the day the herbal medicine shop closes.

어떻게 변해가는지도 스스로 파악할 수 있는 공간이 있잖아요.

한 사람의 인식 범위가 한계가 있으니까

내가 잘 모르는 지역까지 나의 영역을 펼치려고 했을 때

그러면 자기 자신을 좀 잃어버릴 수가 있는 거죠.

욕망을 갖고 영역을 확장하려고 하다 보면

When you have desires and try to expand your territory,

욕망에 사로잡혀서 어떤 자기 자신을 정확하게 돌아보지 못하는

그런 경험을 할 수 있잖아요.

뭐 저 같은 경우는 뭐 돈을 벌려고 한창 열심히

Well, in my case, I was really working hard to make money.

돈만 생각하고 살던 시절이 있었는데

There was a time when I only thought about money.

어느 순간 그렇게 살다 보면

돈을 왜 먹으려고 했지라는 목적은 사라지고

The purpose of why I tried to eat the money has disappeared.

그 금액에만 집착하는 자신을 발견한 적이 있는데

I have found myself obsessed with just that amount of money.

막 그런 어떤 경험을 하기 그 어떤 욕망에 사로잡힌

Caught up in some desire to have such an experience.

자기 자신을 보기 싫어서 이렇게 하지 않았을까

Maybe I did this because I didn't want to see myself.

이런 추측을 저는 해봐요. 이 두 분이

I make this guess: these two people...

그리고 결과적으로 이렇게 어떤 영역이나 지역을 한정해서

And as a result, by limiting certain areas or regions like this.

그들이 원했던 건 역설적으로 자유이지 않았을까 싶어요.

그러니까 자기 자신을 흐트러지지 않고

그냥 이렇게 흐르는 걸 보고

스스로 무너지는 모습에서 벗어나서

그래서 느낄 수 있는 자유

So the freedom that can be felt.

그런 걸 좀 추구하지 않았을까 이런 생각이 들더라고요.

I thought they might have been pursuing something like that.

그리고 이 두 사람은 항상 주변을 둘러볼 줄 알고

And these two people always know how to look around them.

이 세상이 어떻게 돌아가는 줄 알고

Do you know how this world turns?

무엇이 옳은지 그런 옳은 것을 위해서

For what is right, for the sake of what is right.

어떤 방향으로 실천할 것인지

In what direction will you take action?

그걸 항상 고민하는 인간이었겠다라는 생각이 듭니다.

그런 기준에 맞추면서 살면 행복할까?

거기에 몰두하게 되는 어떤 경향이 좀 있는 것 같아요.

만족도가 빠르게 사라져가는 걸

그런 행복을 가져다주는 수단이 분명 생각해 보면 많이 있는데

우리는 항상 이제 경제적 풍요에 눈이 멀도록 좀

되어 있는 건 아닐까 이런 생각을 하고요.

I think to myself, "Isn't it already happening?"

그리고 또 하나 이 두 사람의 삶을 통해서

참 대단하다고 들은 게 나를 뒤로

숨기고 살 수 있을까라는 그런 거죠.

그러니까 어떻게 보면은 뭐 꼭 돈의 추구가 아니더라도

명예 같은 것도 사실은 사람의 큰 욕망 중에 하나인데

본전 찾고 싶어하는 욕망이 누군가에게 있을 텐데 이걸 하지 않았다는 점에서 참 대단하다

사실 잘 모르는 사람을 위해서 쓰자고 얘기하면 사실 거부감이 드는 게 첫 번째 당연히 드는 감정이 아닐까 싶은데

여윳돈이 생기면 더 좋은 차를 구할 수 있는 것 같아요

여기 사천에 비란치아라는 그 이탈리안 레스토랑을 하는 사장님이 계세요

There is a restaurant owner in Sacheon who runs an Italian restaurant called Birancia.

비란치아라는 게 이탈리아 말인데 뜻이 저울이라고 하더라고요

"Virancha" is an Italian word that means scale.

근데 이 형평운동 아까 말씀드렸지만 저울형자 평등할 평자 저울처럼 평등하자라는 뜻인데

However, as I mentioned earlier, this "Hyungpyeong Movement" means to be equal like a scale or balance.

그러니까 이 사장님이 김장하 선생의 삶에 되게 많은 감량을 받아서

So this boss received a lot of inspiration from Kim Jang-ha's life.

그래서 김장하 선생이 추구했던 형평운동에서 가게 이름을 따온 거죠

예를 들어서 어른이니까 운전도 할 줄 알아야지

Since you're an adult, you should be able to find a house on your own.

어른이니까 뭐 이 정도는 할 수 있잖아

As an adult, I should be able to handle this much.

뭐 이 정도, 그러니까 성인으로서

What is this level, I mean as an adult?

예전에는 누군가의 보살핌을 받았던 사람이

Someone who used to receive care from others.

이제는 스스로 보살핌 없이 그 일을 해내고

Now, I can accomplish the task without self-care.

더 나아가서 그 보살핌을 베풀어 줄 수 있는 나이가 됐다

Furthermore, I have reached the age where I can provide that care.

그런 의미에서 어른이 됐다라는 표현이 있는 것 같고

In that sense, it seems that there is an expression for becoming an adult.

다른 뜻으로는

In another sense,

그분 참 좋은 어른이시지

That person is truly a good adult.

그 어른 참 배울 점이 많아

That adult has a lot to teach.

이런 식으로 얘기할 때는 이제 배울 점이 많고

When talking like this, there is a lot to learn.

인격이 훌륭한 약간 노인에 대해서 얘기하는

Talking about a somewhat elderly person with excellent character.

노인을 일컫는 말로 이제 어른의 뜻이 있죠

The term for elderly now also means adult.

어떻게 보면 그 두 번째 뜻

In a way, that second meaning.

그분 참 좋은 어른이시지 할 때

When you say that person is really a good adult.

그 어른의 뜻은 우리 사회 유교적 전통의 흔적 중에 하나라고 볼 수 있을 것 같아요

The meaning of that adult can be seen as one of the traces of the Confucian tradition in our society.

나이 많은 사람에게 더 높은 도덕성을 기대하는 어떤 관습 같은 것 같아요.

It seems like a kind of custom that expects higher morality from older people.

사실 요즘은 유교라고 하면 너무 부정적인 인식이 많죠

These days, there is a lot of negative perception associated with Confucianism.

유교탈레반 국가다

It's a Confucian Taliban state.

유교 때문에 나라가 망했다

The country has gone astray because of Confucianism.

그런 서열 따지는 문화가 다 유교에서 왔다

That culture of ranking and hierarchy all comes from Confucianism.

이런 얘기들이 많이 있긴 한데

There are indeed many stories like this.

사실은 실제로 잘못된 사례들이 많긴 했죠

In fact, there were many actual cases of mistakes.

상하관계가 각자의 역할이 있고

There is a hierarchy where each has their own role.

그 역할을 최선을 다하면 좋은 사회가 된다라는 것이

Doing that role to the best of one's ability leads to a better society.

어떤 유교적 이상사회의 모습인데

What does an ideal Confucian society look like?

근데 그것이 아니라 이제 각자의 역할에,

But it's not that, now regarding each person's role,

차이를 그냥 역할의 차이인데

It's just a difference in roles.

그것이 권위의 차이, 높낮이의 차이로 잘못 이해하고

It is misunderstood as a difference in authority and hierarchy.

그 차이에서 오는 권력의 차이를 가지고

With the difference in power that comes from that difference.

어떻게 보면 권력이 더 많을수록 더 많은 책임을 지라는 얘기고

In a way, it means that the more power you have, the more responsibility you should take on.

그런 뜻인 건데

That's what it means.

본래의 뜻은 그것이 아니라

That's not the original meaning.

권력의 차이를 가지고 아랫사람을 착취한다거나

Exploiting subordinates using the difference in power.

폭력을 휘두른다거나

Wielding violence

그런 식으로 오해하고

Misunderstanding like that

아니면 이해를 제대로 했더라도

잘못 써먹는 나쁜 사람들이 있었고

여러 가지로 많이 나왔고

그 모습들이 현재 사회에 또 많지 않아서

워낙 부정적인 역할로만 많이 인식이 되긴 했는데

유교적인 정신이 꼭 나쁜 것만 있는 건 아닐 수 있죠

왜냐면 우리 사회에 혹은 엘리트나 옛날 조선인들이

어떤 시대를 치면 선비계층

If we hit a certain era, the scholar class.

그리고 나이 많은 어른에게

And to older adults

모범이 되라는 사회적 압력으로 존재하기도 하는 거죠

It also exists as a social pressure to set an example.

그래서 그것이 많은 좋은 역할로 이어진 경우도 많이 있더라고 봅니다

So I see that it has often led to many good roles.

그러니까 유교에서 강조하는 각자 사회적인 역할을 하라

So, perform your respective social roles as emphasized in Confucianism.

라는 어떤 사회적인 압박이 좋은 예시로 한다면

구한말의 의병장이나 임진왜란 때나

그래서 이제 어른으로서

어른의 역할을 해야 하도록 여겨진 사람들이

되게 많은 책임을 씌워서

그 사람들이 했던 선행이나 배려나 의로운 행동들이나

The good deeds, consideration, and righteous actions those people did.

챙김이나 돌봄으로 형태로 좀 나왔던 것 같습니다

근데 그것들이 뭐 너무

But those things are just too...

많은 도덕적 의무를 또 씌워서 서로에게 피곤해지는 경우들이 많았고

There have often been situations where we became exhausted by imposing many moral obligations on each other.

현대 상황에 맞지 않는 불합리한 경우들이 많아서

There are many unreasonable cases that do not fit the current situation.

이제 유교적인 관습들이 많이 줄여지고 있는 과정이고

거의 흔적을 많이 사라지고 있는 과정이죠

그럼에도 남아있다고 보는 게

관심 많이 가지고 돌볼 줄 알고

이런 것들은 사실 그런 문화들은 아직 많이 남아 있는 것 같고

다만 아쉬운 점은

그런 어떤 마음들이 있지만

There are those kinds of feelings, but

그것이 자기 주변을 벗어나지 못하고

It cannot escape its surroundings.

사회 전반으로 뻗치지 못하는 건

It's something that cannot reach throughout society.

좀 문제인 것 같다는 생각이 들고

I think it seems to be a bit of a problem.

그 문제가 아마 IMF인 것 같아요

I think the problem is probably the IMF.

IMF 이후에 더 이상 나라나 사회가 나를 구원해 주지 못하고

After the IMF, neither the country nor society can save me anymore.

나 스스로가 나를 지켜야 된다는 마음을 새기게 만든 어떤

Something that made me engrave in my heart that I must protect myself.

어떤 계기가 된 것 같습니다

It seems like it was a turning point.

IMF가 많은 것들을 무너뜨렸죠

The IMF has destroyed many things.

그래서

IMF 이후에 유교적인 사고관이 제외하던 우리 사회가 많이 무너졌고

Since the IMF, the Confucian mindset that excluded many aspects of our society has greatly fallen apart.

그 빈 공간을 어떤 돈에 대한 욕심이나

That empty space is filled with some kind of greed for money.

물질에 대한 추구 같은 걸로 좀 많이 채워진 느낌이 들어요

I feel like there's a lot filled with a pursuit of material things.

분명히 제가 저는 80년대생이니까

I'm clearly born in the 80s.

어린 시절에 느꼈던 사회적인 분위기와

The social atmosphere I felt during my childhood and

IMF를 지나고 나서 느끼는 분위기는 분명 다르다고 보거든요

I definitely feel that the atmosphere is different after going through the IMF.

아마 저보다 더 나이가 많으신 분들은

"Perhaps those who are older than me."

더 크게 느끼실 거라고 생각을 하는데

I think you'll feel it even more intensely.

어쨌든 그렇습니다

Anyway, that's how it is.

그런 IMF 이후로 이제 수많은 어떤 커뮤니티들이 해체가 되고

Since the IMF, numerous communities have been disbanded.

어떤 소속감을 느끼지 못하고

Feeling a lack of belonging.

외로움을 느끼는 사람들이 많이 늘어난 거 같아요

It seems that many people are feeling lonely.

그러면서 더더욱이나 혹시 나를 지킬 수 있는 거

And that makes me wonder if there is anything that can protect me even more.

돈 밖에 없다 라는 압박을

The pressure of saying there's nothing but money.

생각이 더 강하게 들게 되고

그것들이 좀 더 굳어지면서

As they hardened a bit more.

그냥 어떤 돈에 대한 냉목적인 추구까지 가는 사람들

Just people who take a cold and objective pursuit of money.

아니면 도든 항상 다가가고 있는 사람들도 많고

Otherwise, there are also many people who are always approaching.

물론 경제적인 부를 쫓고 열심히 일하고

하는 건 항상 좋은 일이라고 생각을 합니다

근데 그것이 전부이냐고 말하는 건 문제라는 거고요

사실 좋은 선한 효과들이 분명히 있을 수도 있다

사실 그 책임을 다하지 않아도 되면

안 하려고 하는 게

What I don't want to do

이기적인 사람의 본성이 있으니까

Because it is the nature of a selfish person.

근데 이제 그 어떤 이기적인 본성을

부끄럼 없이 꺼내는 것을 막는 거는

또 사회가 해당하는 것 같아요

아무래도 농촌사회에서나 통용될 수 있는

어떤 미덕들이 요즘 사회에서는

당연히 통하지 않는 부분들이 많고

농경사회에서야 나이가 많다는 것이

지식이든 재산이든 경험이든 인격이든 쌓였다

라는 것에 증거가 될 수가 있죠

왜냐면 매년 똑같은 일을 반복하는 세대다 보니까

쌓은 것이 많다는 것과 비례한다고는 사실 볼 수가 없죠

It's not really true that having accumulated a lot is proportional to that.

워낙에 사회가 다 변화되어 있고

Society has changed so much.

다양한 영역이 있고

There are various areas.

모든 사람들이 다 각자 다른 삶을 살기 때문에

Because everyone lives a different life.

나이가 가지고 나이가 증명할 수 있는 것들은

Things that age can prove.

사실 그냥 신체적인 노하우 말고는

Honestly, it's not just about physical know-how.

사실은 증명할 수 있는 게 많이 없다고 생각하는데

I believe there are actually not many things that can be proven.

그냥 요즘 세상에서는

그러니까 꼭 좋은 어른이 되라

그런 것보다는 그냥 성인이라면

시민으로서 해야 될 어떤 책임감이나

권리 의무 같은 걸 잘 깨닫고

자신의 책임을 다하고 의무를 행사하고

권리를 꺼누릴 거 누리고

Someone who will take advantage of their rights.

다른 사람한테 피해 안 주고만 살면 그만이라고 생각하고

I think it's enough to just live without causing harm to others.

꼭 나이가 많다고 해서

Just because someone is older,

모범이 될 필요는 없는 것 같다고 생각이 듭니다

I don't think it is necessary to be a role model.

모범이 돼야 한다는 그 압박 때문에

Because of the pressure to set a good example.

덧대보면 그 사람을 가둬놓는 걸 수도 있는 거니까

If you add to it, it could also be about trapping that person.

그러니까 2, 30대라고 해서

미성숙한 태도를 보여도 된다는 것도 아니고

50대 이상의 기성세대라고 해서

더 도덕적일 거라는 건 사실 기대할 바가 아닌 것 같습니다

It seems that expecting it to be more moral is not realistic.

저만 돌아보더라도 사실은 오히려 더 도덕에 더 많이 신경을 쓰고

Even just looking back at myself, the truth is that I actually pay more attention to morality.

더 멋진 행동을 많이 하려고 했던 건 20대였던 것 같아요

I think it was in my 20s that I tried to do a lot of more wonderful things.

지금은 때가 묻어버려 가지고

은근히 막 저게 선한 행동인 걸 알지만

거기에 따라오는 노력들이 귀찮은 거 알기 때문에

피하려고 하는 그런 뻔뻔하고 좀 추잡한 자신을 많이 목격한 게

I've witnessed a lot of that shameless and somewhat squalid version of myself that I try to avoid.

되게 좋습니다.

어쨌든 그냥 나이와 상관없이 성인이라면 시민이라면

Anyway, if you are an adult and a citizen, regardless of age.

자신이 할 수 있는 선에서 주변을 보살피면서

While taking care of those around me as much as I can.

세상에 관심을 가지면서 사는 게 맞다

It's right to live with an interest in the world.

젊은이도 모범이 될 수 있고 그런 거라고 생각합니다

I believe that young people can also be role models.

모두가 모범이 될 수 있는 거고

Everyone can be a role model.

자신이 할 수 있는 선에서 모범이 되려는 노력을 하는 게 맞지

It's right to make an effort to be a role model within what you can do.

특정 나이대에 꼭 모범을 보여야 되는 걸 보일 수도 없을 뿐더러

It's not only impossible to show an example that must be demonstrated at a specific age.

이런 생각이 들더라고요

I started to have this thought.

그리고 또 이 두 작품을 보면서 드는 생각이

And also, the thought that comes to mind while looking at these two works is...

결과적으로 어떻게 죽을까에 대한 고민을 하게 되는 작품이라고 생각했는데

I thought it was a work that makes you contemplate how you will ultimately die.

아까 말씀드린 것처럼 좋은 어른이 누구나 좋은 어른이 돼야 된다 하는

As I mentioned earlier, any good adult should strive to be a good adult.

생각은 저는 없기 때문에

Because I have no thoughts.

저는 그렇게 느꼈습니다

I felt that way.

다만 이제 생각해보자는 거죠

많은 존경을 받고

한번 생각해볼 수 있는 기회를 얻을 수 있는 이 작품들이라고 보거든요

I see these works as an opportunity to think about it once.

사실은 성인이 되고 각자 주어진 책임을 다 하다 보면

하루하루 해나가야 될 의무들이 있고 임무들이 있고

There are duties and tasks that need to be fulfilled day by day.

그거를 해나가는데 하루 허덕허덕 되면서 하루가 흘러가고

As I struggle to get through that, the day passes by.

또 다른 하루가 오고

Another day is coming.

그렇게 또 화를 보내고 이렇게 사는 거

Living like this while sending more anger.

사실은 다들 벗어나고 싶어 하지만 너무 훌륭한 삶이죠

The truth is that everyone wants to break free, but it's such a wonderful life.

그러다 보면 자신의 부양해야 될 의무를 다 하려고 하다 보면

Then, if you try to fulfill your responsibilities to support others…

이제 돈돈 돈을 쫓게 되고

Now you will start chasing money.

돈돈거리면서 살 수도 있다라고 생각을 합니다

I think it's possible to live while making a lot of noise.

그러나 내가 이러려고 돈만 쫓으려고 살았던 건 아니죠

However, I didn't live just to chase after money.

I didn't live just to chase after money like this.

어떤 내가 살고 싶어 했던 이런 사람으로 기억되고 싶은

그런 삶이 있었을 텐데

어떻게 삶을 살 것인가에 대한 답을 예전에는 갖고 있을 수도 있는데

You might have had an answer in the past about how to live your life.

그걸 잊어버릴 수도 있죠 생활에 치이다 보면

You can forget about it when caught up in life.

어떤 삶을 살 것인가

What kind of life will you live?

어떤 죽음으로 어떻게 죽어갈 것인가

How will I die and what kind of death will it be?

어떤 사람으로 기억될 것인가에 대한 고민을

Thoughts on how to be remembered as a person.

살면서 바쁜 삶이지만 해볼 필요는 있다고 생각합니다

I think it's worth trying, even though life is busy.

그 고민을 할 수 있도록 만들어주는 그런 작품이라는 생각이 듭니다.

I think it's a work that allows you to ponder that concern.

그래서 꼭 보셨으면 좋겠다는 말을 하고 싶은 거고요.

So I want to say that I hope you definitely get to see it.

저는 어떤 이 작품을 보고 제가 잊고 있었던 꿈이 하나 있었는데

I saw this work and it reminded me of a dream I had forgotten.

사실은 저는 꿈을 물질적인 걸로 정하지는 않았던 사람이어서

The truth is, I am someone who didn't define dreams in material terms.

어떤 일을 하면서 살 것인가 어떤 경험을 하면서 살 것인가

What kind of work will I do to live, and what kind of experiences will I have while living?

그렇다고 해서 인생을 멋있고 풍요롭게 멋진 경험들만 채우지는 못했어요.

However, that doesn't mean that life is filled only with wonderful and enriching experiences.

어쨌든 제가 20대 때 가졌던 꿈이 어떤 게 있었냐면

Anyway, one of the dreams I had in my twenties was...

유쾌한 할아버지가 되는 꿈이 있었거든요.

I had a dream of becoming a cheerful grandfather.

지금도 그 꿈이 사라진 건 아니고 잊고 있었던 건데

That dream hasn't disappeared even now; I just had forgotten about it.

유쾌한 할아버지가 되려면

유쾌한 할아버지라는 게 좀

추상적이긴 하지만 어떤 거냐면

제가 왜 이런 생각을 했냐면

The reason I thought this way is that

사실 우리나라의 할아버지들이 상당히 좀 외로워 보였어요.

In fact, the grandfathers in our country seemed quite lonely.

할머니들에 비해서.

Compared to grandmothers.

할머니들은 사실 그냥 나이 먹어도 그런 나이와 상관없이 금방 친해지고

Grandmothers actually just become close quickly, regardless of their age as they get older.

알아왔던 기간이 얼마 안 돼도 금방 친밀해지고

Even if the time we've known each other isn't long, we quickly become close.

밥도 나눠 먹고 같이 놀러도 다니고 하더라고요.

They say they share meals and go out to have fun together.

그렇게 금방 친해질 수 있는 어떤 여성들이

사실 추규의 친화력이 있다고 생각해요.

I actually think that Chugyu has a charm that attracts others.

남성들은 사실 나이를 먹어도 자존심을 앞세우고

Men actually prioritize their pride even as they grow older.

서열을 앞세우고

Bringing hierarchy to the forefront.

그리고 또 이 어떤 가부장적인 관습이나

And also this kind of patriarchal custom or

어떤 거친 세대를 살아왔던 우리 할아버지 세대

The generation of our grandfather who lived through a rough era.

저희 아버지 세대까지 포함을 하더라도

Even if we include my father's generation.

남자라는 단어가 주는 어떤 것들이

The things that the word "man" conveys.

사실 굴레로 적용하는 것들도 많이 있다고 생각하거든요.

In fact, I believe there are many things that can be applied in terms of shackles.

착한 모습 보이면 안 되고 쉬운 모습 보여주면 안 되고

You shouldn't show a good side, and you shouldn't show an easy side.

또 대화나 소통 같은 것들의 가치를 잘 못 느끼고

I also don't fully appreciate the value of things like conversation or communication.

그냥 의사만 전달하고 주고받는 정도

Just passing on information and exchanging it.

명령을 주고받는 정도로 생각하는

그런데 익숙한 세대로 많이 보였어요.

그러다 보니까 어른이었을 때도

뭔가 삶이 외롭지 않고 유쾌하게 살아가는 할아버지들은

많이 못 본 것 같아. 할머니들에 비해서.

I feel like I haven't seen them much compared to the grandmothers.

그래서 유쾌한 할아버지가 되려면

젊었을 때 많은 것들을 준비해야겠다는 생각이 들었었는데

When I was younger, I thought I needed to prepare many things.

그러니까 노인이 된다라는 건

So becoming an elderly person means

스스로를 지켜줄 많은 안전장치가

Many safety devices that will protect you.

어렸을 때처럼 다시 필요하다는 뜻이 되는 건데

It means that it is needed again just like in childhood.

그러니까 젊었을 때는 남아있는 수많은 기회와 시간

So when you're young, there are countless opportunities and time ahead.

그리고 건강한 몸이 안전장치를 대신해 주는데

And a healthy body serves as a substitute for safety devices.

그런데 노인이 되면 사실 그런 것들이 다 사라져 있기 때문에

However, when you become old, all those things actually disappear.

여러 가지로 안전장치들을 많이 마련해야 되는 거죠.

Various safety measures need to be put in place.

일단 자기 스스로 신체적 건강도 중요하고

First of all, one's own physical health is also important.

근육을 많이 쌓아놓고 치아 같은 것도 관리를 잘하고

Building a lot of muscle and taking good care of things like my teeth.

그러니까 다시 말해서 스스로 식사하고 밥 먹고 거동하고

이런 데 전혀 무리가 없는 신체적 건강도 필요하고

어떤 정신적인 건강도 상당히 중요하고

그리고 자신의 정서를 나눌 수 있는

And someone who can share their emotions.

어떤 가족이든 친구든 그런 것도 필요하고

Every family and friend needs something like that.

또 활발한 의사소통을 할 수 있는

Also able to have active communication.

어떤 좋은 대화 자세 같은 것도

Such as a good posture for conversation.

평생을 통해서 쌓아가야 된다고 생각하는데

I believe it should be built up throughout a lifetime.

일단은 말을 잘 들어주는 경청의 자세랄지

First of all, it’s about having the attitude of listening well.

자신의 의견을 일몸 요연하게 표현할 수 있는

Able to express one's opinions clearly and concisely.

어떤 화법이랄지 이런 것

Such a way of speaking, or something like that.

혹은 더 나아가서 유머를 던질 수 있는 여유 같은 거

Or even the kind of leisure that allows for throwing in some humor.

평생 동안 쌓아온 유머에 대한 경험들 지식들 이런 거

Experiences and knowledge about humor that I've built up over a lifetime.

그리고 경제적인 여유도 필요하죠

And financial stability is also necessary.

병원 가는데 돈 때문에 병원 못 가겠다 이런 걱정을 안 할 정도로

So that I won't have to worry about not being able to go to the hospital because of money.

돈이 있으면 좋고

It would be nice to have money.

그 다음에 당연히 의식주 해결하는데

Then, of course, you need to solve the issues of food, clothing, and shelter.

노동이 없어도 괜찮을 정도의 돈이 있는 건 좋고

It's good to have enough money that you don't need to work.

그 다음에 누굴 만나든 밥 한 번 사는 거

커피 한 잔 사는데 무리가 않을 정도의 용돈도 있으면 좋고
