Yes, I would like to ask for a bit of an explanation like this.

네 디벨로퍼, 엔지니어, 개발자, 프로그래머 등등 불리는 이름이 많은 직업이에요.

It's a job that is known by many names, such as developer, engineer, creator, and programmer.

근데 저는 회사에서 불리는 포지션명을 주로 사용합니다.

But I mainly use the position title that I am called at work.

현 회사에서는 소프트 엔지니어라고 불리고 있어서 그렇게 소개를 할 수 있는데

I can introduce myself that way because I am referred to as a software engineer at my current company.

이렇게 말하면 경계가 조금 불분명할 수가 있어요.

Saying it this way can make the boundaries a bit unclear.

왜냐하면 프로그래밍을 프론트랑 백엔드로 나누기 때문에 저는 주로 프론트를 맡고 있습니다.

Because programming is divided into front-end and back-end, I mainly take care of the front-end.

웹이나 모바일 앱 서비스를 하나 만드는 걸 예로 들면은 제가 하는 일은 디자이너가 디자인을 하잖아요.

For example, when creating a web or mobile app service, what I do is that the designer designs it.

그러면 이제 그 디자인을 가지고 와서 클릭을 했을 때 넘어간다든지 아니면은 타이핑을 해서 제출을 했을 때 페이지가 바뀌고 그런 게 있잖아요.

So then, when you bring that design and click on it, or when you type and submit, the page changes, and that kind of thing happens, right?

그래서 그 정보를 어디다 줘야 되냐. 서버에다가 갖다 줘야 돼요.

So where should I send that information? It needs to be provided to the server.

그 역할을 제가 합니다. 이 정보 끌어다가 서버까지 가져다 줘.

I will take on that role. Bring this information and deliver it to the server.

그러면 이제 거기까지가 풍성해요.

Then, that's all abundant now.

프론트의 일이고 백엔드에서는 그 정보를 받아서 저장을 합니다.

It's the front-end's job, and the back-end receives and stores that information.

그리고 나중에 웹 보면은 회원 정보 같은 거 보면은 내 정보가 바로 떠 있잖아요. 수정하기 들어가면은.

And later, when you look at the web, if you check your member information, my information pops up right away, doesn't it? When you go to edit it.

근데 그 정보는 백엔드에서 다시 보내줘요.

But that information will be sent again from the backend.

그리고 제가 받은 정보를 끌어와서 화면에 뿌려줍니다.

And I pull the information I received and display it on the screen.

그렇게 데이터를 주고 받는 역할을 중간에서 프론트엔드 개발자가 해요.

The frontend developer plays the role of intermediary in exchanging data like that.

The tasks you are currently doing at your current job include everything you just mentioned, right?

아 네. 먼저 저희 회사 인더스트리 를 정의를 하자면은 아그리텍이에요.

Ah yes. First, to define our company's industry, it is agritech.

그 농업. 농업을 하는 기업들을 주로 상대하는 그분들이 고객. 주 고객이 되는 거죠.

That agriculture. Those who mainly deal with companies engaged in agriculture become the customers. They become the main customers.

그분들을 상대하는 그분들이 쓸 수 있는 앱을 만드는데.

We are making an app that they can use to interact with those people.

그래서 여러 서플라이들이 올린 그 프로젝트들을 농업에 쓰이는 프로젝트들을 가격을 비교해 보고 살 수 있는 거예요.

그리고 그 프로젝트를 사서 농사를 지었어요. 그럼 결과물이 나오겠죠.

And then I bought that project and started farming. Then the results will come out.

This platform has both a web app and a mobile app.

그렇게 해서 총 상용화되고 있는 서비스가 한 네 가지 정도라고 보시면 돼요.

그러면 지금 회사에서 근무한 지 얼마나 되셨나요?

이제 한 두 달 더 있으면은 2년 채우는 것 같아요.

얼마 전까지 엄청나게 퇴사가 하고 싶었고요.

Until recently, I really wanted to quit my job.

근데 요 몇 주는 또 괜찮은 것 같고 왔다 갔다 하는 것 같아요.

But it seems like the past few weeks have been okay, and it feels like it's going back and forth.

이게 뭐 3, 6, 9 이렇게 온다고 하잖아요.

아 네. 처음에는 자율성이 엄청나게 보장되는 게 엄청 큰 매력으로 저한테 다가왔고요.

I’m also starting to be drawn to other companies, and it’s noticeable what those servants at the noble house receive in exchange for their work.

그래서 비교를 해보니까 내가 가진 게 너무 없다.

So when I compare, I realize I have very little.

I've worked at a total of three places until now.

와우. 여러 군데 다니셨네요. 와. 처음에 영국에서 엔지니어로 일하겠다고 결심한 계기가 어떻게 되나요?

Wow. You've been to many places. Wow. What made you decide to work as an engineer in the UK in the first place?

제가 개발자로 일해야겠다고 생각하고 넘어오진 않았고 한국에 있을 때 제가 있던 포지션명이 웹 퍼블리셔였어요.

I didn't come to the conclusion that I should work as a developer, and when I was in Korea, my position was web publisher.

그 일이 조금 비슷하긴 해요. 이제 디자이너와 개발자 사이에서 뼈대를 이렇게 만들어주는 일을 하거든요.

It's somewhat similar to that. Now, I create a framework like this between designers and developers.

HTML이랑 CSS를 써서.

이제 그 일을 하다가 뭔가 한국 회사 문화랑 되게 안 맞는 거예요. 근데 그때는 그걸 인지를 못하고 지금 와서 생각을 해보건대 안 맞았던 것 같고 그때는 되게 항상 분노에 차서 살고 있었어요.

Now, while doing that job, I felt that it just didn't match the Korean company culture at all. But at that time, I didn't realize it, and thinking back now, I think it really didn't fit, and I was always living in anger back then.

음.

Um.

그러던 중에 어렴풋이 이제 해외생활에 대한 호기심이 좀 있었어요. 워라벨이 좋다는 얘기를 많이 들었어서 그래서 막연하게 좀 동경을 하다가 자연스럽게 준비를 하고 워홀을 도전하면서 넘어온 것 같아요.

During that time, I had a faint curiosity about living abroad. I had heard a lot about the benefits of work-life balance, so I vaguely longed for it, and then I naturally started preparing and attempted a working holiday, which led me here.

그리고 할 줄 아는 일이 웹 퍼블리싱이니까. 그래서 그쪽으로 일을 구해서 여기까지 온 거죠.

And since the only thing I can do is web publishing, I got a job in that field and came this far.

아 그렇군요. 원래 조금 해외 취업에 대해서 동경이 있다고 했는데 실제랑 현실이랑 비교하니까 어떠세요?

Oh, I see. You originally mentioned that you had a bit of a longing for working abroad, but how do you feel when comparing the reality to that?

네. 영국에서의 첫 취업 준비는 어떻게 하셨나요?

Yes. How did you prepare for your first job in the UK?

약간 무식하게 맨땅 헤딩을 했던 것 같아요. 그래서 좀 오래 걸린 것 같아요. 5개월이 걸렸거든요.

I think I approached it a bit ignorantly, like heading straight into the ground. That's why it took a while. It took me 5 months.

근데 쌍또님도 오래 걸리지 않았어요?

저는 뭐 1년보다 더 걸렸죠. 네.

약간 한국을 생각하고 와서 그런지 한국에서는 진짜 빨리 됐거든요.

I think it's because I came thinking about Korea, but things went really fast in Korea.

네. 맞아요. 한국은 좀 빠르잖아요. 한 달 안에도 구하고 그러잖아요.

Yes. That's right. Korea is a bit fast, isn't it? You can even find it within a month.

맞아요. 중소로 가면 일주일 코스로 갈 수 있어요. 진짜.

That's right. You can go for a week course in Jeongso. Really.

그래서 제가 그 생각을 하고 와서 길어야 두 달이겠지 하고 왔는데 다섯 달이 총 걸리더라고요.

So I thought about it and figured it would take at most two months, but it ended up taking a total of five months.

그래서 그때 이제 넘어올 때 어디서도 들은 건 있어가지고 cv랑 커버레터 그리고 포트폴리오 있었어요.

So at that time, when I was coming over, I had heard about it from somewhere and had my CV, cover letter, and portfolio.

그래가지고 그걸 이제 사부작 사부작 준비를 했어요. 한국에 있을 때 알고 지내던 외국인 친구들이랑 만나가지고 문법 좀 체크해줘. 이렇게 해가지고 cv랑 커버레터 들고 오고.

So I started preparing slowly for that. I met up with foreign friends I knew in Korea and asked them to check my grammar. I brought along my CV and cover letter.

그리고 이제 와서 링크드인이라는 거를 접하게 되고 이제 프로파일 만들어서 cv 올린 다음에 이렇게 찔러봤죠. 이 회사 저 회사.

And now I've come across LinkedIn, so I created a profile and uploaded my CV, and then I started reaching out to various companies.

그러니까 연락이 오는 거예요.

So that's why I'm getting contacted.

그 개발자가 되게 메인스트림인 플랫폼이잖아요. 연락이 많이 올 수밖에 없는 상황이었어요.

That developer is on a very mainstream platform. It was a situation where he would naturally receive a lot of contact.

내가 누군지 모르니까. 잘하는지 못하는지 모르니까 일단 연락이 오잖아요. 내가 는 것도 있고.

I don't know who I am. I don't know if I'm good at it or not, so I receive contact first. It's something I've done.

일단 포지션명 보고.

그렇죠. 그래서 연락이 막 오는데 제가 영어가 안 되니까 그게 리크루터인지 회사 HR인지 구분이 안 되는 거예요. 그래서 고배를 많이 마셨죠.

That's right. So I keep getting contacted, but since I can't speak English, I can't tell if it's a recruiter or the company's HR. That's why I've faced a lot of setbacks.

네. 처음에는 모를 수가 있죠.

그래서 영어는 좀 다르게 하고 악센트도 다 다르고 이러니까.

그래서 워홀이다 이러고 와서 재밌는 데 관광지에 가서 놀고 외국인 친구 사귀고 이러다 갑자기 실전 영어를 들으니까 멘붕인 거죠.

So it's a working holiday, you come here and have fun at tourist spots, make foreign friends, and then suddenly when you hear real-life English, it's a total shock.

그렇죠. 그렇죠. 그래서 오히려 취업 준비를 하면서 영어 눈치가 많이 늘었어요.

So I tried looking for a job without doing anything for about three months, but it turned out to be really harmful to my mental health.

이런 경험이 처음이었어요. 내가 내 능력으로 아무것도 할 수 없는 세상에 와서 살아본 게 처음이었어서 되게 우울해지더라고요.

This was my first experience. It was the first time I lived in a world where I couldn't do anything with my own abilities, and it made me really depressed.

우울감에 빠져서 이러면 안 되겠다. 몸을 좀 움직여야겠다 해서 그때는 최소한의 노력으로 구할 수 있는 일을 해보자. 그래서 그때 간 게 한식당이었어요.

I can't keep going on like this, feeling depressed. I need to move my body a bit, so I decided to do a job I could get with minimal effort. That's when I went to a Korean restaurant.

여기서 최선의 노력이라고 하면 좀 오해를 하실 수도 있는데 영어를 안 써도 되는 곳. 몸은 힘들지만 노력을 해야 되지만.

When I say "best effort" here, it might be misunderstood, but it's a place where you don't have to use English. It's physically demanding, but you have to put in the effort.

그래서 그런 곳으로 가서 일을 하고 그때 병행을 하면서 지원을 또 했어요. 한 달 반 정도.

So I went to those places to work and applied again while doing that for about a month and a half.

그래서 낮에는 전화받고 인터뷰 보러 다니고 오후에는 가서 파트타임으로 일을 하고 밤에 집에 와서는 뭐 타스크가 있으면 그거 하고 또 회사 찾고 그렇게 한 5개월 보내다가 첫 직장 잡은 것 같아요.

So during the day, I answered phone calls and went for interviews, in the afternoon I would go and work part-time, and at night when I got home, I would do any tasks I had and look for companies. I spent about 5 months like that before I got my first job.

그래도 빡빡하게 이렇게 좀 우울한 그런 거를 타파하고자 좀 약간 몸을 움직이고 사회에 좀 나가고.

네. 있었어요. 스킬 테스트가 사실 거의 다 있었는데 거기까지 못 간 인터뷰들도 있었고 거기까지 간 인터뷰는 한 절반 정도 있었는데 처음에는 인터뷰도 잘 안 잡히더라고요.

Yes. There were. There were actually almost all skill tests, but there were interviews that didn't make it that far, and about half of the interviews that did make it that far. At first, it was hard to even get interviews scheduled.

근데 이게 시간이 조금 지나니까 1개, 2개 잡히면서 첫 직장 구할 때까지 한 10개 본 것 같아요. 인터뷰를. 그리고 타스크는 한 6개 정도 받았나. 근데 그중에 제대로 해서 낸 것도 있고 도저히 안 되겠어가지고 어떻게 어떻게 해서 도움을 받아서 내긴 했는데 설명을 해보래 또 다음 인터뷰에서.

But after some time, I think I saw about 10 interviews until I got my first job, starting with 1 or 2. And I think I received about 6 tasks. However, I submitted some that I managed to complete, and for some, I couldn't do it on my own, so I got some help to submit them, but they asked me to explain it again in the next interview.

기분이, 느낌이 안 좋대요. 그래서 왜 저러지? 이러고 그냥 따라갔는데 뭐 뭐 뭐라 뭐라 얘기하는데 사람들 표정이 다 썩은 거야.

They say they don't feel good. So I wondered why they were acting like that. I just followed along, but they were talking about something, and everyone had a rotten expression.

그래서 무슨 일이지? 이러면서 끝까지 못 알아들었어. 그러고 나왔는데.

So what was going on? I just couldn't understand it until the end. Then I came out.

뭐 리던턴 씨, 리던턴 씨 이러는 거. 근데 내가 그때 그 단어를 몰랐거든요.

그때 한 9개월? 8개월, 9개월 됐을 때.

그렇게 시간 보냈는데.

I spent time like that.

네. 그래가지고 와 이거 어떡하나 고민을 했는데 또 웃긴 게.

Yes. So I was wondering what to do about this, but the funny thing is.

우리 팀에서 3명 중에 1명만 석 달을 더 살려두고 나머지 2명은 한 달만 살려준다는 거예요.

In our team, only one out of three will be kept alive for three more months, while the other two will only be kept alive for one month.

근데 그것도 나중에 발표를 하겠대. 그래서 무슨 오디션 프로그램도 아니고 리던턴 씨 누가 누가 버티나 막 이런 거 한 거예요.

But they said they would announce that later. So it's not some audition program where they measure who can hold out or anything like that.

그래서 아 걱정돼가지고 그때 이제 회사에 말레이시아 분이 계셨어요.

So, I was worried because there was a Malaysian person at the company at that time.

제가 삼촌이라고 막 부르면서 따라다니는 분이 있었는데 그분이 저한테 그러는 거예요.

There was someone who kept following me around calling me Uncle, and that person said this to me.

봐라. 네가 살아남는다 이러는 거예요. 그래서 뭘 보고 그렇게 얘기를 하냐.

Look. You're saying that you survive. So what are you seeing that makes you say that?

내가 경력도 제일 짧은데 나머지 두 분은 십몇 년씩 거기서 일하신 분들이었어요.

I have the shortest experience, and the other two have been working there for over ten years.

당연히 그 사람들 쓰지 날 쓰겠어 이랬는데 야 제일 싼 놈이 살아남아 이러는 거예요.

Of course they would use me, I thought. But then I realized the cheapest guy is the one who survives.

So I got hit. I got hit once. I was completely taken down. Oh, really?

그러면 집에 갔는데 그날 저녁에 연락 와서 비집이 너가 남기로 했어 이렇게 연락이 오더라고요.

So I went home, and that evening I got a message saying that Biji decided to stay.

그래서 그러면 3개월 동안 빡세게 일을 구해야겠다. 했는데.

So then I thought I should work really hard to find a job for three months.

정말 신기한 게 두 번째는 2주 만에 구했어요.

What's really amazing is that I found the second one in just two weeks.

영국 경력이 cv에 들어가니까 바로 연락이 오더라고.

I received a call right away because my UK experience was included in my CV.

그렇게 해서 두 번째 직장에 갔다가 거기를 1년? 거진 2년 다녔는데 거기서 이제 티어트로 바꿨어요.

So I went to my second job and worked there for about 1 year? Almost 2 years, and then I switched to a theater.

그래서 다니다가 코로나 때문에 또 리던던시 된 거예요. 진짜 완전 망한 거지 여기서는.

So I was going to work, but then I got laid off again due to COVID. It really went completely wrong here.

혹시 인더스트리가 뭐였어요? 두 번째에서? 마케팅이었어요.

What industry was it, by any chance? It was marketing in the second one.

마케팅? 이런저런 클라이언트들이 고전을 면치 못하니까 마케팅에 돈을 적게?

거기 개발팀이 우크라이나에 있었는데 우크라이나 전쟁 터지기 전에 거기 대고로 자른 거예요.

The development team was in Ukraine, and they were cut there before the war broke out.

그래서 이제 원성을 샀지. 아무튼 그러고 나서 제가 그 회사 잘리고 석사했죠.

So now I have earned public outrage. Anyway, after that, I got fired from the company and completed my master's degree.

더 있어 보려고. 석사를 하고 졸업을 하고 나서 현 회사에 들어왔어요.

I wanted to seem more qualified. After completing my master's degree and graduating, I joined my current company.

현 회사는 그냥 이것저것 찾고 넣어보다가 여길 가야지 하는 생각은 없었는데 괜찮네 하고 넣었었어요.

I didn't have the thought of going here while just looking for various things and trying them out, but I thought it was fine and decided to go for it.

사실 스킬셋이 약간 상향이었는데 그냥 넣어봤어요.

Actually, the skill set has been slightly improved, but I just put it in.

그러고 여행을 갔는데 현 사수한테 이메일이 온 거예요. 인터뷰를 보자고.

Then I went on a trip and I received an email from my current supervisor. They wanted to have an interview.

스킬이 안 맞으니까 뭐 보나 마나겠지 해서 나 지금 여행 중인데 일주일 뒤에 보자 이랬는데 그렇게 해놓고 막 괜히 또 내 안에 유교걸 떨려가지고.

Since our skills don't match, I figured it wouldn't matter what we watched, so I said I'm on a trip right now, let's meet in a week. But then I got anxious about it for no reason because of my Confucian girl side.

당연히 안 된다고 그러겠지? 누가 인터뷰 보자는데 여행하느라 붙이겠어? 막 이런 생각을 했어요.

"Of course they would say it can't be done, right? Who would attach an interview while traveling? I had thoughts like this."

근데 진짜 신기하게 며칠 있다가 연락이 오더라고요. 아마 내 생각에는 맘에 든 사람 못 찾아서 연락이 온 거 같아. 연락이 와서 인터뷰를 봤어요. 사수랑.

But it's really interesting, a few days later I got contacted. I think it's because they couldn't find anyone they liked. They reached out to me and I had an interview with my supervisor.

근데 되게 되게 칠하더라고요. 그래서 그 친구랑 이니셜 인터뷰를 보고 스킬 타스크를 하재요.

But it was really, really nice. So I watched the initial interview with that friend and suggested doing a skills task.

그래서 그 다음 다음날인가? 스킬 타스크를 하는데 일대일로 라이브 코딩을 시키더라고. 그래서 야 진짜 망했다. 이랬는데.

So was it the day after the day after? I was doing a skill task, and they made me do live coding one-on-one. I thought, "Wow, this is really a disaster."

페어링을 하면서 얼마나 잘 맞춰갈 수 있는지. 그러고.

It's about how well we can match while pairing. And then.

아 팀워크를 본 거죠?

Oh, you saw the teamwork?

네. 모르는 문제가 나오면 구글링을 어떻게 하는지를 봤어요. 근데 운이 되게 좋았던 게 제가 그때 인터뷰용 알고리즘을 막 풀고 있을 때였어요. 근데 그 문제를 내는 거야 걔가.

Yes. I saw how to Google when I encounter a problem I don't know. But I was really lucky because I was working on algorithm problems for my interview at that time. And that's the exact problem they were asking about.

근데 내가 그때 달달 외울 때였거든. 막 그 화이트 포드에 쓸 수 있었어. 그래서 막 썼지. 썼더니.

But at that time, I was memorizing it sweetly. I could use it on the white board. So I wrote it down a lot.

그 다음에 연락이 와서 팀 인터뷰를 또 보재요.

Then I received a call asking me to do a team interview again.

네.

Yes.

그래서 가서 팀 인터뷰 막 보고 뭐 별거 안 했어. 그냥 궁금한 거 물어보더라고요. 대답해주고. 너로 정했다. 그러고 그날 바로 연락이 오더라고요.

So I went and watched the team interview, and I didn't really do anything special. They just asked me questions they were curious about. I answered them. They decided on me. And then they contacted me the very same day.

원래 내일 연락 줄게 이랬는데 그날 바로 오길래 그래 알았어. 그러고서는 또 걔네가 준다는 그 셀러리가 업투 얼마였어요.

I was originally going to contact you tomorrow, but they came right away that day, so I said okay. And then they mentioned that the salary they are offering is up to how much?

그래서 그걸 받아야 되잖아. 내가 업투라고 했는 그 금액에.

So you have to receive that, the amount I mentioned for the up-to.

네. 그래서 메일을 또 막 열심히 쓰다가 미팅을 그냥 하자 이래가지고 미팅을 했어요.

Yes. So I was busy writing emails again, and then I thought, let's just have a meeting, and we had a meeting.

근데 셀러리는 얼마야? 이렇게 물어봤더니.

내 생각에는 그 전에 인터뷰 막 이렇게 스킬이 안 맞는데 그냥 넣는 사람 진짜 많은 거 같아요. 저도 상향인데 넣었거든요.

I think there are really a lot of people who just apply even if their skills don't match the interview requirements. I also applied even though I was looking to improve my position.

그리고 그 알고리즘 문제가 되게 쉬운 거였어요. 되게 되게 쉬운 거였는데 그걸 못하는 애들도 많고 구글링을 못한 애들이 많았다는 걸 보고 내가 일을 구할 때 너무 몸을 사리지 않아도 되는구나.

And that algorithm problem was really easy. It was really, really easy, but there were many who couldn't do it and many who couldn't even Google it, and that made me realize that I don't have to be too cautious when looking for a job.

생각보다 사람들이 배짱이 너무너무 좋구나. 나도 그냥 넣어봐야겠다. 이 생각을 좀 했고.

People have more guts than I expected. I think I should just give it a try too. I've been thinking about this a bit.

I was really curious about myself.

So I want to look for that answer a bit.

멋지게 일을 하고 계신 분들을 수소문에서 인터뷰를 해 봤고요

I did some research and conducted interviews with people who are doing great work.

첫 해는 제가 IT에 좀 초점을 맞췄는데

In the first year, I focused a bit on IT.
