그 리스트에 있는 걸 꼭 다 봐야하는 것도 아니고, 사실은 안 봐도 사는데 문제는 없지만, 전문가들이 선정한 이유가 나름대로 있지 않을까 하는 생각에서 이 팟퀘스트가 시작되었습니다.

It's not necessary to watch everything on that list, and in fact, there wouldn't be a problem if you didn't watch them, but I thought there might be a reason behind why the experts selected them, which is how this podcast quest started.

요즘 날씨가 중간이 없고 너무 극단적인 것 같습니다.

These days, the weather seems to be extreme and lacking moderation.

이런 날씨일수록 맛있는 거 많이 드시고 건강 챙기셔야 해요.

이번주에는 제2회 청룡시리즈 어워즈 시상식이 있었습니다.

This week, the 2nd Cheongryong Series Awards ceremony was held.

대상은 더글로리의 송혜교님이 수상을 하셨구요.

청룡시리즈 어워즈 시상식 소식을 듣고 청룡영화제가 생각이 나더라구요.

Hearing the news about the Blue Dragon Series Awards reminded me of the Blue Dragon Film Festival.

마침 한국영화가 보고 싶기도 했고,

I happened to want to watch a Korean movie too,

그럼 이번주에는 청룡영화제에서 최우수 작품상을 받은 영화를 한번 감상해보자 해서 선정해본 네번째 명작은 바로 모가디슈입니다.

Then, for this week, let's take a look at the film that won the Best Picture award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, and the fourth masterpiece we've selected is none other than "Mogadishu."

청룡영화제

Blue Dragon Film Awards

류승환 감독의 작품인 모가디슈는,

Director Ryoo Seung-wan's work Mogadishu is,

2021년에 열린 제42회 청룡영화제에서 최우수 작품상, 감독상, 나무 조연상, 미술상, 그리고 한국영화 최다 관객상까지 총 5개의 상을 수상한 작품입니다.

This work won a total of five awards at the 42nd Blue Dragon Film Awards held in 2021, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction, and the Korean Film Audience Award for the most viewers.

또 청룡영화제뿐만 아니라,

Not only the Blue Dragon Film Awards, but also,

아니라 한국영화평론가협회상, 부일영화상, 백상예술대상, 팜스프링스

No, it's the Korean Movie Critics Association Awards, Bu-il Film Awards, Baeksang Arts Awards, Palm Springs.

국제영화제 등 다양한 곳에서 총 23개의 상을 수상했더라고요.

I heard that it won a total of 23 awards at various places, including international film festivals.

개봉했다는 당시가 2021년인데 2021년은 코로나가 한창 기승을 부려서

The time of its release was 2021, and in 2021, COVID-19 was rampant.

영화계가 많이 위축되어 있던 시기 였어요.

It was a time when the film industry was very repressed.

그래서 그럼에도 불구하고 이렇게 많은 상을 받을 만큼 선전을 했던 작품이었습니다.

저는 그때 모가디슈를 영화관에서 보지는 않았지만

I didn't watch Mogadishu in the theater back then, but...

실화를 바탕으로 한 영화인데 꽤 재미있다라는 말을 그 당시에 좀 들었던 그런 기억이 있어서

It's a movie based on a true story, and I remember hearing that it was quite interesting at the time.

이번에 감상할 때 살짝 기대를 하고 봤습니다.

I watched it this time with a bit of expectation.

영화 맨 처음 시작 부분에 간단한 발음이

At the very beginning of the movie, there is a simple pronunciation.

배경 설명이 나오는데요.

A background explanation is provided.

한국은 1980년대까지 유엔의 가입 승인을 받지 못했습니다.

South Korea did not receive approval for membership in the United Nations until the 1980s.

그런데 당시에 가장 많은 유엔 투표권을 가진 대륙이 아프리카였어요.

However, at that time, the continent with the most UN voting rights was Africa.

그러다 보니까 투표를 받기 위해서 아프리카가 한국 외교 총력전에 주요 대상이 되고

As a result, Africa has become a key target in South Korea's diplomatic efforts to secure votes.

1987년 소말리아의 수도인 모가디슈로 외교관들을 파견하게 됩니다.

In 1987, diplomats were sent to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

이 설명으로 인해서 영화 제목이 왜 모가디슈인지, 모가디슈가 무엇인지에 대해서 알 수 있는 설명이었습니다.

This explanation provided insight into why the movie is titled "Mogadishu" and what Mogadishu is.

저는 이번에 처음 알게 되었어요.

I learned about it for the first time this time.

그 소말리아의 수도가 모가디슈라는 거를.

The capital of Somalia is called Mogadishu.

어쨌든 소말리아에는 우리나라뿐만 아니라 북한, 미국, 이탈리아, 이집트 등

Anyway, Somalia has not only our country but also North Korea, the United States, Italy, and Egypt, etc.

여러 나라에서 파견한 대사관들이 있었는데요.

There were embassies dispatched from various countries.

그중에서 한국과 북한은 당연히 외교관들끼리도 사이가 안 좋았습니다.

Among them, it is natural that the relations between diplomats from South Korea and North Korea were not good.

우리나라 측에서 겨우 소말리아 대통령과 면담을 잡으면

If our country manages to arrange a meeting with the President of Somalia...

북한 측에서 공작으로 무장강도에게 당하게 만들어가지고 면담을 하지 못하게 하고

The North Korean side caused an armed robbery through sabotage, preventing the meeting from taking place.

우리나라도 북한이 소말리아 반군과 무기거래를 하고 있다.

Our country also reports that North Korea is trading weapons with Somali militia.

이런 가짜 뉴스를 퍼뜨리는 식으로

In this way of spreading fake news.

그렇게 서로의 계획을 망치고 헐뜯습니다.

They undermine and ruin each other's plans like that.

그러다가 호텔에서 양측 외교관들이 언쟁도 벌여요.

Later, the diplomats from both sides also engage in an argument at the hotel.

우리나라 외교관인 한신성 대사가 북한 외교관인 리명수 대사한테

Our country's diplomat, Ambassador Han Shin-seong, to the North Korean diplomat, Ambassador Ri Myong-su:

방해공작하지 말고 페어플레이 하자라고 하니까

I told them not to engage in sabotage and to play fair.

그 임대사가 한 대사한테 거짓말이 너네 외교 방침이냐 이렇게 서로 싸우기도 합니다.

The landlord argues with a diplomat, saying, "Is your foreign policy based on lies?"

이렇게 서로 싸우기도 합니다.

They sometimes fight like this.

근데 싸우는 와중에 갑자기 호텔 밖에서 폭발음이 크게 들리고

But suddenly, a loud explosion was heard outside the hotel while we were fighting.

사이렌 소리도 들리는 거예요.

You can also hear the sound of sirens.

그래서 알고 보니까 정부에 대항해서 대규모 기습 시위가 일어난 거였어요.

So it turns out that a large-scale surprise protest occurred against the government.

시위가 맨 처음 일어났을 때는 외무부 장관이 소말리아 정부가 컨트롤하고 있다.

When the protests first occurred, the foreign minister stated that the Somali government is in control.

안심해라 이렇게 했는데

Don't worry, I did it like this.

이게 갈수록 안심을 할 수가 없는 상황이 됩니다.

The situation is becoming increasingly alarming and insecure.

길거리는 정부군으로부터 도망가다가 잡히는 사람들

People on the street are being caught while trying to escape from the government troops.

그리고 가게를 약탈하는 사람들 등등으로 확 섞여가지고

And mixed in with people who are looting the store and so on.

아비규환 상태고 여행사, 은행, 관공서 이런 것들도 싹 다 문을 닫고

It’s a state of chaos, and travel agencies, banks, and government offices have all completely shut down.

심지어는 소말리아 정부의 장관들까지도 다 도망가버려요.

Even the ministers of the Somali government have all fled.

대사관도 더 이상 안전한 곳이 아니게 된 게

The embassy has also become no longer a safe place.

독재정부에 협력한 정부가 안전한 곳이 아니게 된 게

The government that collaborated with the dictatorial regime is no longer a safe place.

외국정부 불러가라 이러면서 시위대가 대사관에 쳐들어오기도 했거든요.

The protesters even broke into the embassy while saying to call the foreign government.

근데 그렇게 시위대가 쳐들어오면서 통신이나 이런 게 다 끊겨버려요.

But as the protesters break in, all communications and things like that get cut off.

그러니까 이 소말리아 한국대사관이 서울 본부에다가

So, the Somali Embassy in Korea is in contact with the headquarters in Seoul.

이런 급박한 상황을 전하고 도움 요청도 해야 하는데

I need to convey this urgent situation and request help.

할 수가 없게 돼버린 거죠.

It has become impossible to do so.

이렇게 소말리아의 상황이 계속 심각해져 가니까

As the situation in Somalia continues to worsen like this,

한국은행이 대사관에 쳐들어오기도 했거든요.

The Bank of Korea even broke into the embassy.

외교관들도 탈출을 하기 위해서 공항으로 가요.

Diplomats are also going to the airport to escape.

근데 공항장이 한국 외교관들한테

But the airport manager told the South Korean diplomats...

그쪽 정부에서 구조기를 보내지 않으면

If your government does not send rescue teams.

아무리 외교관이라고 해도 무작정 태워줄 수 없다.

No matter how much of a diplomat you are, I can't just give you a ride without reason.

이런 식으로 말을 합니다.

This is how I speak.

북한 외교관들도 공항으로 가려고 했는데

North Korean diplomats also tried to go to the airport, but...

통행을 거절당하고 모가디슈 전역이 통행금지구역이 될 거다라는

Access will be denied, and all of Mogadishu will become a restricted area.

군인의 말을 듣게 됩니다.

You will hear the words of a soldier.

북한 외교관들이 소말리아에 현지 정보원들이 있었어요.

North Korean diplomats had local informants in Somalia.

그래서 그 정보원들한테 통행증 좀 암암리에 구해달라고 부탁을 했었는데

So I secretly asked those informants to help me obtain a pass.

그 정보원들이 통행증이 아니라 총을 들고 쳐들어온 거예요.

Those informants came in with guns, not passes.

그래서 대사관에 있는 물건, 음식, 돈

So the items, food, and money in the embassy.

심지어는 사람들이 차고 있던 시계, 귀금속 이런 것까지 다 훔쳐갑니다.

They even steal things like watches and jewelry that people are wearing.

이제 더 이상 북한 대사관이 안전하지 않으니까

Now the North Korean embassy is no longer safe.

중국 대사관으로 도망가자 해서

Let's run away to the Chinese embassy.

겨우겨우 중국 대사관까지 갔는데

I barely made it to the Chinese embassy.

이미 거기도 난리가 나 있는 거예요.

It's already a mess over there.

그렇게 다시 도망가다가 한국 대사관까지 오게 됐는데

While running away like that, I ended up at the Korean embassy.

한신성 대사가 고민을 하다가

Ambassador Hanshinseong, while pondering,

북한 외교관들이랑 그 가족들을 받아줍니다.

We accept North Korean diplomats and their families.

북한 측에는 아이들도 많이 있었거든요.

There were many children on the North Korean side.

들어와서 서로 경계도 하고 싸우기도 하고 그랬는데

We came in and were on guard with each other and even fought sometimes.

어찌됐든 상황이 상황인지라

Anyway, the situation is what it is.

한국하고 북한의 힘을 모아서 소말리아를 빠져나가기로 해요.

Let's combine the strength of South Korea and North Korea to get out of Somalia.

그래서 한국은 이탈리아 대사관, 북한은 이집트 대사관을 맡아서

So South Korea oversees the Italian embassy, and North Korea manages the Egyptian embassy.

쪼러보기로 결정을 합니다.

I decide to look at Jjolero.

다음 날이 돼서 각자 맡은 대사관으로 갔는데

The next day, we each went to our assigned embassies.

이집트 대사관은 이집트 대사관을 맡아서 쪼러보기로 합니다.

The Egyptian embassy has decided to take charge of the Egyptian embassy and will oversee it.

일이 잘 풀리지 않았어요.

Things didn't go well.

이탈리아 대사관에서는 구조기가 있기는 한데

The Italian embassy does have a rescue plane, but...

한국 외교관들은 태워줄 수 있지만

Korean diplomats can give you a ride, but

본인들이랑 수교도 하지 않는 북한 사람들을 태워주기는 좀 힘들다

It's a bit difficult to give a ride to North Koreans who don't even have diplomatic relations with you.

이런 식으로 얘기를 하는 거예요.

This is how we talk.

그래서 그 얘기를 듣고 한신성 대사가 고민을 하다가

So, after hearing that story, Ambassador Han Sinseong pondered for a while.

사실 그 북한 사람들 우리 쪽으로 전향한 사람들이다

In fact, those North Koreans are people who have defected to our side.

이렇게 거짓말을 합니다.

This is how you lie.

강대진 참사관이 뭐 하는 거냐고

What is Counselor Kang Dae-jin doing?

우리 자리도 이러다가 사라지면 어떻게 하냐

What if our place disappears like this?

이런 식으로 뭐라고 하니까

한신성 대사가 다 같이 살 수 있는 방법이 있는데

There is a way for all of us to live together, says Ambassador Hanshin.

할 수 있는 건 다 해봐야 되지 않겠냐

이런 식으로 말을 해요.

근데 정말 다행히도 한국 정부랑 이탈리아 정부랑 협상을 해가지고

But fortunately, the Korean government and the Italian government negotiated and...

전향자들까지 모두 다 구조기에 탈 수 있게 됩니다.

Even the defectors will be able to ride the rescue aircraft.

이제 한국은 이집트 대사관을 맡아서

Now Korea is in charge of the Egyptian embassy.

한국 대사관이 있는 사람들을 모두 이탈리아 대사관으로 데려가는 일만 남았는데

The only task left is to take everyone from the Korean embassy to the Italian embassy.

문제는 길거리에 반군들이랑 시위대들이 쫙 깔려있다는 거였어요.

The problem was that there were rebel groups and protestors spread out on the streets.

이탈리아 대사관이랑 이집트 대사관으로 도움 요청하러 갈 때도

When going to request help from the Italian embassy and the Egyptian embassy.

총알 세례를 엄청 받으면서 겨우 갔었거든요.

I barely made it through while receiving a barrage of bullets.

그래서 고민을 하다가 리명수 북한 대사가 묘수를 하나 떠올리는데

So, after some thought, North Korean Ambassador Ri Myong-su comes up with a brilliant idea.

바로 책으로 쓰거든요.

I write it directly into a book.

차를 뒤덮어서 무장을 하자는 거였어요.

It was to cover the car and arm ourselves.

그러니까 총알을 맞아도 차 안으로 뚫고 들어오지 못하게 하자 그런 거였죠.

So we were trying to prevent bullets from piercing through into the car even if they hit.

그래서 이제 안 쓰는 책들 이런 거 다 가지고 오고

So now bring all the books you don't use anymore.

문짝도 떼우고 옷으로 모래주머니도 만들고 해서 차에다가 다 붙입니다.

I also reinforce the door and make sandbags with clothes, and then attach everything to the car.

그리고 나서 소말리아 국교가 이슬람교인데

And then, Somalia's state religion is Islam.

이슬람교는 하루에 정해진 예배식이에요.

Islam has prescribed prayers to be performed daily.

예배 시간이 있잖아요.

There is a worship service, you know.

그 시간에는 정부군이랑 반군 다 예배만 드리니까

At that time, both the government troops and the rebels only held worship services.

좀 더 안전하게 가려고 그 시간에 맞춰서

I tried to go more safely by matching that time.

20명이 넘는 사람들이 차 4대로 나눠 타서

More than 20 people divided into 4 cars to ride.

이탈리아 대사관으로 출발을 합니다.

I am setting off for the Italian Embassy.

가다가 정부군을 만나게 되는데

On the way, they encounter the government troops.

뱃길을 보여주려고 창 밖으로 이렇게 내밀다가

I was trying to show the way by sticking out like this from the window.

그걸 총으로 정부군들이 오인을 해서

The government troops mistook that for a gun.

막 총으로 때리고 가요.

They just hit me with a gun and left.

엄청 쏴요.

It's really spicy.

그래서 도망을 가는데 반군들을 또 만나게 돼요.

So while escaping, I encounter the rebels again.

그래서 또 막 이렇게 쫓기고

So I’m being chased like this again.

쫓기면서 총알 세례를 계속 받으니까

As I was being chased, I kept getting rained on by bullets.

사라졌던 문짝도 날아가고 책도 날아가고 하면서

The door that had disappeared also flew away, and the books flew away as well.

진짜 겨우겨우 이탈리아 대사관에 도착을 합니다.

I finally managed to arrive at the Italian embassy.

4대 다 다행히 도착을 다 하긴 했는데

Fortunately, all four of them have arrived safely.

안타깝게도 북한에 태준기 참사관이 있었는데

Unfortunately, there was a Counselor Tae Jun-ki in North Korea.

그 참사관이 결국에는 총을 맞고 사망을 하게 돼요.

The officer ultimately ends up getting shot and dies.

다음날 이탈리아 정부의 요구를 정부군이랑 반군 모두 받아들여서

The next day, both the government forces and the rebels agreed to the demands of the Italian government.

공항 가는 동안 휴전을 하기로 해요.

Let's agree to a truce while we go to the airport.

그래서 한국, 북한, 이탈리아 사람들까지

So even people from Korea, North Korea, and Italy.

모두 다 무사히 구조기에 탑승을 하게 됩니다.

Everyone will get on the rescue aircraft safely.

이제 북한 사람들이 한국 대사관에 맨 처음에 왔을 때는

When North Koreans first came to the Korean embassy,

아무래도 남북한 관계가 관계이다 보니까

Since the relationship between North and South Korea is what it is,

서로 막 대면대면 하고

We are both being cold and distant towards each other.

북한 아이들이 아이들의 눈을 손으로 가리기도 하고 그랬었거든요.

North Korean children used to cover their eyes with their hands.

근데 목숨이 진짜 말 그대로 왔다 갔다 하는 상황을 같이 겪었잖아요.

But we experienced a situation where our lives were truly hanging by a thread, didn't we?

그래서 그 구조기 안에서 북한 사람들이

So, the North Korean people inside that structure...

늦었지만 고맙다고도 하기도 하고 그럽니다.

It’s late, but I want to say thank you.

그러다가 케냐는

Then Kenya

케냐 문바사 공항에 도착을 했는데

I have arrived at Mombasa Airport in Kenya.

공항에 한국 측이랑 북한 측 모두 마중을 나와 있는 거예요.

Both the South Korean and North Korean sides are out to greet at the airport.

그걸 한 신성 대사가 보고

The holy ambassador saw that.

이 구조기 밖에서 아는 척을 이제 하면은 안 되니까

You should no longer pretend to know outside of this structure.

작별인사는 이 안에서 하자고 해서

Let's say our goodbyes in here.

그렇게 작별인사를 나누게 됩니다.

That's how we say our goodbyes.

근데 한국 정부 측에서는

But on the part of the South Korean government...

이 북한 사람들을 전향자라고 알고 있었잖아요.

I knew these North Koreans as converts.

그래서 안경을...

So, the glasses...

안기부에서 사람들이 나와 있었어요.

There were people from the National Intelligence Service outside.

그 사람들 데려가려고.

I'm trying to take those people.

그래가지고 한국 외교관들이 먼저 내려서

So the Korean diplomats went down first.

그 안기부 사람들 막 데려가면서

Those people from the National Intelligence Service are just taking them away.

여기 외신들 나와 있다.

Foreign media are here.

막 이렇게 하면서 충돌 없이

Just doing this without any conflict.

북한 사람들이 갈 수 있도록 그렇게 해줍니다.

I will make it so that North Korean people can go.

그리고 한 신성 대사가 얘기했듯이

And as a certain saint said,

한국 사람들, 북한 사람들

Korean people, North Korean people.

서로 둘 다 절대 쳐다보지 않고

Neither of them looks at each other at all.

그리고 한 신성 대사가 얘기했듯이

And as a holy monk once said,

북한 어른들이 처음 그랬던 것처럼

Just like the older generation of North Korea used to do.

아이들 눈 다시 가려주고

Cover the children's eyes again.

그렇게 각자 버스를 타고 가는 장면을 마지막으로

당시 소말리아 국영 TV 기자가

소말리아를 탈출한 다음에 쓴

Written after escaping from Somalia.

영문 수기가 있는데

There is an English essay.

그 수기에 따르면

내전이 시작된 후에

After the civil war began

반군들이 시체로 바리케이트를 만들고

The rebels made barricades out of corpses.

영화에서는 북한 대사관이

In the movie, the North Korean embassy...

한 번만 약탈을 당하는 걸로 나오는데

It seems to be depicted as being plundered only once.

실제로는 8번이나 약탈을 당했었다고 해요.

In reality, it is said that they have been plundered eight times.

영화보다 더한 현실이 바로 여기에 있었던 거죠.

The reality that was even greater than the movies was right here.

그리고 탈출할 당시에 작성되었던 외교문서가

And the diplomatic documents that were prepared at the time of the escape.

올해 4월 6일에

On April 6th of this year.

공개가 되었었는데요.

It was made public.

거기에 더 놀라운 일이 적혀있더라고요.

영화에서는 이탈리아 대사관으로 갈 때

정부군하고 반군한테 모두 총격을 받아서

안타깝게 북한 측 한 분이 돌아가시게 되었다

Unfortunately, one person from the North Korean side has passed away.

말씀을 드렸었는데

실제로 북한 측의 한상렬 씨가

이탈리아 대사관 300여 미터를 앞두고

About 300 meters in front of the Italian embassy.

총을 맞으셨대요.

They said you got shot.

근데 그게 그분 왼쪽 심장에 박혔는데

But it got lodged in that person's left heart.

그분이 초인적인 힘으로

With superhuman strength.

1분간 계속 운전을 해가지고

I've been driving continuously for a minute.

이탈리아 대사관에 도착을 한 다음에

After arriving at the Italian embassy.

그분이 의식을 이루셨대요.

They say he has attained enlightenment.

운전을 계속하지 않으시고

You are not continuing to drive.
