Let me offer a brief explanation of why the podcast upload has been delayed.

제가 최근에 다시 학원에서 일을 하기로 했습니다

I recently decided to work at an academy again.

학원이라는 곳은 한국에서 중학생, 고등학생들에게 이런저런 공부를 가르치는 곳인데요

A hagwon is a place in Korea that teaches various subjects to middle and high school students.

저는 국어학원이라는 곳에서 한국의 고등학생들에게 국어를 가르치고 있습니다

I teach the Korean language to high school students in a place called the Korean Language Academy.

학생들이 학교에서 시험을 준비하는 걸 돕는 곳이라고 생각하시면 돼요

You can think of it as a place that helps students prepare for exams at school.

그런데 지금이 하필 학생들의 시험기간이라

However, it just happens to be the exam period for the students right now.

학생들의 시험기간이라

It’s exam period for the students.

제가 조금 많이 바쁘답니다

I am a little too busy.

지난주에도 바빴고 사실 아직도 조금 바쁜 때인데

I was busy last week, and actually, I'm still a bit busy now.

그래도 팟캐스트 업로드를 계속 안 할 수는 없으니까

자막 없이 일본 드라마나 영화도 많이 보고 있다고 말씀드렸는데

I mentioned that I watch a lot of Japanese dramas and movies without subtitles.

이번 기회에 저의 외국어 공부와 저의 외국어 공부 방법에 대해서

This time, I would like to talk about my foreign language studies and my methods of studying foreign languages.

한 번 여러분께 말씀을 드려보려고 합니다

그러면 먼저 저의 외국어 공부 경험에 대해서 말씀을 드려보겠습니다

Then, let me first talk about my experience in studying foreign languages.

지난 팟캐스트에서도 말씀드렸지만

2년 정도 일본어를 공부했습니다

I have studied Japanese for about two years.

최근에 일본어 자격증인 JLPT N1을 땄습니다

I recently obtained the JLPT N1, a Japanese language proficiency certification.

제가 일본어 공부를 시작한 계기는 덕질 때문이었습니다

The reason I started studying Japanese was because of my fandom.

옛날 팟캐스트에서 저의 덕질의 역사라는 이름으로

In an old podcast, under the name of "The History of My Fandom."

제가 어떤 덕질을 해왔는지를 말씀드린 적이 있는데

I have mentioned what kind of fandom activities I have been involved in.

지금 제가 덕질하고 있는 사람은

The person I'm currently fangirling over is

일본 배우인 키시 유키노라는 분입니다

This is a Japanese actress named Kishii Yukino.

2년 전에 키시 유키노라는 배우를 처음 보고

I first saw an actress named Kishi Yukino two years ago.

한눈에 반해서 그 이후로 일본어를 공부하게 되었죠

I fell in love at first sight and that's why I started studying Japanese.

그 이후 2년 동안 꾸준히 일본어 공부를 해왔다고 생각해 주시면 됩니다

You can think of it as I have been steadily studying Japanese for the past two years.

그렇다면 일본어 공부는 어떻게 되었을까요?

So, how has your Japanese studies been going?

일본어 공부는 어떻게 되었을까요?

How is your Japanese study going?

그러면 저는 어떤 방법으로 일본어를 공부해 왔을까요?

So, what method have I been using to study Japanese?

처음 반년 정도는 독학은 아니었고요

The first six months were not self-study.

한국인 일본어 선생님께 반년 정도 기초적인 문자, 기초적인 문법 정도를 배웠습니다

I learned basic characters and basic grammar from a Korean Japanese teacher for about half a year.

그리고 반년이 지나서부터는 저 혼자서 공부를 하기 시작했죠

And after six months, I started studying by myself.

그때부터 제가 사용한 방법이

The method I used from that time on was

단순하게 말씀드리자면

To put it simply,

Listen.

읽는 방법이었습니다

It was the way to read.

보통 외국어 공부를 처음 시작하는 분들은

Usually, those who are starting to learn a foreign language for the first time...

문법 책이나 단어책을 사서 공부를 시작하잖아요

You usually start studying by buying a grammar book or a vocabulary book, right?

그렇죠?

That's right?

저는 이런 방법이 시험을 준비할 때는 굉장히 효과적이고 좋은 방법이라고 생각합니다

I think this method is very effective and good for preparing for exams.

시험은 결국 문제를 풀어야 되고

In the end, the exam has to be solved.

그러면 문제에서 자주 읽을 수 있는 방법이기 때문에

Then, it is a method that can often be found in the problems.

아주 다루어지는 문법이나 단어를 정확히 많이 알고 있는 게 중요하니까요

It's important to know a lot of grammar and vocabulary that are handled accurately.

그런데 만약에 당장 시험을 앞두고 공부를 하는 게 아니라면

However, if you are not studying right before an exam...

저는 이렇게 책을 가지고 책 위주로 공부하는 것보다는

I prefer to study with a focus on the book rather than just having the book.

자연스럽게 그 외국어를 내가 받아들일 수 있는 환경을 만드는 게

Creating an environment where I can naturally accept that foreign language is

더 효과적인 방법이지 않을까라고 생각했었습니다

I thought it would be a more effective way.

무슨 말인지 모르겠지만

What I'm trying to say is

어떤 언어를 가장 빠르게

Which language is the fastest?

효과적으로

effectively

학습하는 방법은

How to learn.

그 나라에 가서 살면서

Living in that country

하루 종일 그 언어를 듣고 쓰는 거죠

You listen to and use that language all day long.

그게 가장 그 언어를 빠르고 효과적으로 배울 수 있는 방법이라고 생각합니다

I think that's the fastest and most effective way to learn the language.

하지만 외국어를 공부하겠다고

But I said I would study a foreign language.

무턱대고 그 나라에 가서 살 수는 없는 일이죠

You can't just go to that country and live there without any preparation.

저도 마찬가지였습니다

I felt the same way.

일본어를 빠르고 효과적으로 공부하고 싶었지만

I wanted to study Japanese quickly and effectively, but...

그렇다고 갑자기 일본에 가서 살 수는 없었죠

So, it wasn't possible to suddenly go to Japan and live there.

그래서 제가 생각한 게

So what I thought was

일본에 가서 살 수는 없지만

I can't go and live in Japan, but

하루 종일 최대한 많은 일본어를 보고 듣자는 것이었습니다

The goal was to see and hear as much Japanese as possible all day long.

스스로 일본어에 노출될 수 있는 환경을 만들어서

Create an environment where you can expose yourself to Japanese.

자연스럽게 일본어를 배우고

Naturally learn Japanese.

받아들일 수 있게 만들었던 거죠

It made it possible to accept.

구체적으로 제가 활용했던 건 세 가지였습니다

Specifically, there were three things that I utilized.

첫 번째

First

드라마와 영화를 자막 없이 보는 것

Watching dramas and movies without subtitles.

두 번째

Second

오디오북을 듣는 것

Listening to an audiobook.

세 번째

Third

일본어로 된 책을 읽는 것

Reading a book in Japanese.

이 세 가지를 주로 활용했습니다

I primarily utilized these three things.

하나씩 말씀을 드려보도록 하겠습니다

I will try to explain one by one.

첫째

First

드라마와 영화를 자막 없이 보는 것

Watching dramas and movies without subtitles.

자막 없이 보기

Watch without subtitles.

저는 실제로 작년 4월, 작년 3월부터

Actually, since March of last year, I have been.

일본 드라마와 영화를 아무 자막 없이

Watch Japanese dramas and movies without any subtitles.

한국어 자막이나 일본어 자막 없이

Without Korean or Japanese subtitles.

그냥 보는 걸 시작했습니다

I just started watching.

그런데 이때 당시 제가

By the way, at that time I was...

반년 정도 한국인 선생님께 일본어를 배웠던 상황이라서

I had been learning Japanese from a Korean teacher for about six months.

아주 기초적인 일본 문자와

very basic Japanese characters and

문법 정도는 알고 있는 상황이었어요

I was in a situation where I knew the grammar to some extent.

최소한 이 정도의 지식은 갖추고

At least have this level of knowledge.

드라마와 영화를 자막 없이 보는 걸 시작하시는 걸 추천드립니다

I recommend starting to watch dramas and movies without subtitles.

정말 아무것도 모르는 상태에서 시작하면

If you start without knowing anything at all,

너무 힘드실 거예요

It must be very difficult for you.

아무튼 저는 아무 자막 없이 드라마와 영화 보는 걸 시작했습니다

Anyway, I started watching dramas and movies without any subtitles.

당연히

Of course.

처음에는 들릴 리가 없겠죠

At first, it wouldn't be heard.

아무것도 들릴 리가 없죠

There is no way you can hear anything.

들리지가 않아서 너무 답답했습니다

I was very frustrated because I couldn't hear it.

그래서 가끔은, 아주 가끔은

So sometimes, very rarely

일본어 자막을 켜고 보기도 했지만

I tried watching it with Japanese subtitles on.

거의 켜지 않았고요

It hardly turned on.

말 그대로 아무것도 켜지 않고

Literally with nothing turned on.

자막 없이 그냥 봤습니다

I watched it without subtitles.

그러면 너무 답답하지 않냐라고 생각하실 수가 있는데

You might think that's really frustrating, but...

답답합니다

It's frustrating.

당연히 저 사람이 지금 무슨 말을 하고 있는지

Of course, I know what that person is saying right now.

어떤 감정인지를 백화점으로

What kind of emotion is it with a department store?

100% 이해하기 어려우니까

It's 100% difficult to understand.

많이 답답할 수밖에 없죠

It can't be helped that it can be very frustrating.

그런데 여러분

But everyone,

드라마와 영화는 사실

Drama and movies are actually

꼭 말로만 이야기가 진행되는 건 아니죠

It's not only through words that the story progresses.

영상이 있잖아요

There's a video, you know.

영상에서 어떤 배우가

In the video, which actor...

지금 무슨 말을 하고 있는지는 몰라도

I don't know what you're saying right now.

어떤 표정과 어떤 행동을 하고 있는지는

What kind of expression and actions are being shown?

우리가 보고 알 수 있잖아요

We can see and know, right?

그래서 말은 이해 못하지만

So I can't understand the words, but...

최대한 그 배우의 행동과 표정을 보면서

Try to observe the actor's actions and expressions as much as possible.

그 사람이 아 지금 이런 말을 하고 있는 거겠구나

That person must be saying something like this right now.

라고 상상하고

Imagine that.

좀 어려운 말론 유추하면서

By inferring with somewhat difficult words.

자막 없이 계속 봤습니다

I watched it continuously without subtitles.

되게 답답해요

It's really frustrating.

실제로 되게 답답한데

It's really frustrating, actually.

그렇게 두 달, 세 달, 네 달 정도 지나면

After about two months, three months, four months pass...

조금씩 들립니다

I can hear it little by little.

정말 조금씩 들립니다

I can hear it a little bit.

이게 왜냐하면

This is because

사람들이 사실 일상에서 하는 말이

What people actually say in their daily lives.

그렇게 다양하지 않잖아요

It's not that diverse, right?

그러니까 이 드라마에서 들었던 어떤 표현이

So, there was a phrase I heard in this drama that...

다른 드라마에서도 나오고

It appears in other dramas too.

이 영화에서 봤던 어떤 문법이

Some grammar that I saw in this movie.

다른 영화에서도 사용되겠죠

It will probably be used in other movies too.

그렇죠?

That's right?

그런 식으로 여기서 들었던 걸

What I heard here in that way.

또 저기서 듣고

Also listening from there.

이런 게 반복되면서

As this repeats...

나도 모르게 들리는 것이

What I hear without realizing it

많아지기 시작합니다

It starts to increase.

이해가 되실까요?

그리고 당연히 듣다 보면

And of course, if you listen, you'll understand.

모르는 단어가 엄청 많이 나와요

There are a lot of words I don't know.

저는 어떻게 했냐면

What I did was

늘 핸드폰에 사전을 켜놨습니다

I always have a dictionary open on my phone.

핸드폰에 사전을 늘 켜놓고

Always keep a dictionary open on the phone.

모르는 단어가 들리면

If you hear a word you don't know,

들리는 대로 사전에 검색을 했어요

I searched in advance as I heard.

만약에 제가 잘 들었으면

If I heard you correctly.

사전에 올바르게 검색이 되겠죠?

It will be correctly searched in advance, right?

그렇죠?

That's right?

그러면 아 이런 단어구나

Oh, so this is what the word means.

라고 생각하고 저장을 했고요

I thought that and saved it.

만약에 들었는데

If I heard it.

제가 제대로 못 들어서

I couldn't hear it properly.

검색조차 안 된다

It can't even be searched.

검색조차 할 수가 없다

I can't even search.

그런 경우도 있었는데

There were such cases.

그럴 때는 그냥 넘어갔습니다

At times like that, I just let it go.

이건 정말 중요한

태도라고 생각하는데

I think it's an attitude.

단어 몇 개 모른다고 해서

Just because you don't know a few words.

드라마나 영화가

Drama or movie

이해가 안 되죠?

You don't understand, right?

이해가 안 되지는 않습니다

I can't say I don't understand.

그래서 정말로 검색조차 할 수 없는

So it's something you really can't even search for.

그런 정말 들리지 않는 단어가 나왔을 때는

When a word that is truly inaudible comes up

그냥 넘어가도 된다고 생각합니다

I think it's okay to just let it go.

이런 방송도 찾아봤답니다

I looked for broadcasts like this.

일본 드라마와 영화를 보면서

While watching Japanese dramas and movies

공부한 내용이었습니다

It was the content I studied.

그리고 두 번째로

And secondly,

저는 오디오북을 활용했습니다

I used audiobooks.

저는 주로 일본 오디오북

I mainly listen to Japanese audiobooks.

중에서 소설을 많이 읽고 있습니다

I am reading a lot of novels among them.

그래서 소설을 많이 읽고 있습니다

So I am reading a lot of novels.

왜 소설을 읽었냐면요

The reason I read the novel is...

사실 소설이 아닌

In fact, it's not a novel.

다른 조금 어려운

A little different and difficult.

정보를 전달하는 책들도

Books that convey information as well.

많이 있었는데

There were a lot.

그런 책들은

한 번 흐름을 놓치면

Once you miss the flow

다시 흐름을 이해하는 게

Understanding the flow again.

조금 어렵더라고요

그런데 소설 같은 경우는

그래서 제가 소설을 들을 때는

버스나 지하철로

By bus or subway.

이동할 때 되게 많이 들었어요

일본 오디오북을 읽고 있습니다

I am reading a Japanese audiobook.

그래서 오디오북 듣는 시간만 해도

So just the time spent listening to audiobooks...

하루에 한 시간에서

One hour a day

한 시간 반 정도는 될 겁니다

물론 처음엔 당연히

오디오북이 잘 들리지 않았겠죠

아무래도 드라마나 영화는

오디오북은 듣기만 해야 되잖아요

그래서 처음에는

오디오북을 듣는 게

더 어려웠는데

이것도 많이 듣다 보니까

들리는 게 늘어나더라고요

I feel like my hearing is getting better.

처음 시작하면

답답한 건

What's frustrating is

당연한 일이라고 생각합니다

그래도 계속 듣고

보고 하다 보면

조금 더 힘들더라고요

그래서 이렇게 생각했던 거죠

공부를 할 바에는

I bought and read a lot.

조금 더 집중해서

두 시간 반, 세 시간까지

일본어를 들으면서

While listening to Japanese.

살 수 있는 거예요

비록 일본에 가서

정말 하루 종일 일본어만 듣는 것보다는

It's definitely better than just listening to Japanese all day.

당연히 부족하겠지만

It may be lacking, but...

일본어로 듣는 것보다는

Rather than listening in Japanese

한국에서

In Korea

하루에 두세 시간씩

Two to three hours a day.

일본어를 듣는 것만 할 수 있다고 하더라도

다른 사람들에 비해서

Compared to others.

실력이 빠르게 오를 수 있겠죠

Your skills can improve quickly.

향상될 수 있겠죠
