Those studying English have likely explored a lot of resources on this topic and attempted various approaches.

일단 제가 내린 결론을 오늘 좀 한번 말씀을 드려보겠습니다

First of all, I would like to share the conclusion I've reached today.

일단 우리가 영어 공부를 한다고 하면 제일 처음 접하는 게 듣기죠

First of all, when we study English, the first thing we encounter is listening.

왜냐하면 듣기가 안 되면 말하기가 안 되니까

Because if you can't listen, you can't speak.

제가 외국에 잠깐 있을 때 그때 한국에서 이민을 가신 분을 알게 된 케이스가 있었습니다

I had a case where I got to know someone who immigrated from Korea while I was briefly abroad.

그래서 제가 영어 공부 하시는 분들이 이 주제에 대해서 많은 자료도 찾아보고 여러 시도도 해보셨겠습니다

So, I believe that those studying English have searched for a lot of 자료 on this topic and have made various attempts.

그분 같은 경우는 20대에 결혼을 하고 이민을 가셔서

In his case, he got married in his twenties and emigrated.

지금 벌써 미국에서 산 지 20년이 되신 분인데

It's already been 20 years since they've been living in the United States.

여전히 영어를 못 하신다고 겸손을 보이시더라고요

You still show humility by saying that you can't speak English well.

그래서 제가 에이 무슨 20년을 사셨는데 영어가 안 되시냐 그랬더니 아 진짜래요

So I asked them, "How have you lived for 20 years and still don't speak English?" and they said, "No, it's true."

그래서 에이 이랬는데 진짜 나중에 이렇게 외국인하고 같이 모이는 자리가 있었는데

So, I said, "Hey," and later on, there was actually a gathering with foreigners.

그걸 계속 피하시는 거예요

You are continuing to avoid that.

왜 그럴까 알고 봤더니

I wondered why that was, and it turned out that...

듣기는 막 이렇게 말하는 거예요

Listening is just like talking this way.

어느 정도 되는데 이것도 잘 안 되고요

It's somewhat okay, but this isn't working well either.

말하기 자체를 아예 안 하시는 거예요

You completely don't speak at all.

그래서 왜 그럴까? 라고 봤더니

So why is that? When I looked into it...

하여튼 여러 가지 요인이 있었죠

Anyway, there were various factors.

이분이 성인 때 미국에 건너가서

This person crossed over to the United States as an adult.

늦게 영어 공부를 해서 그런가?

Is it because I started studying English late?

이런 요인도 있었고

There were also these factors.

아니면 영어에 별로 소질이 없으신 분인가?

Or are you not very talented in English?

이런 생각도 들었었고요

I also had such thoughts.

그런데 일단 제가 여러 가지 고민을 거친 끝에

However, after going through various considerations,

알게 된 결과는 가장 중요한 원인

The result of what I learned is the most important cause.

여러 가지 이야기가 있습니다만

There are many stories.

제일 중요한 원인은 영어를 많이 듣고

The most important reason is listening to a lot of English.

많이 안 쓰는 환경에 놓여 있는 분이셨습니다

You were in an environment that is not used much.

그분이 하시는 일도 한인들을 상대로 하는

What he does is also aimed at the Korean community.

그런 일들이었고

That was what happened.

또 약간 성격도 소극적이셔서

They are also somewhat passive in personality.

회사 끝나면 집에 바로 들어오시는

Come straight home after work.

그런 분이셨거든요

That kind of person.

그래서 제가 내린 결론은

So the conclusion I've come to is

일단 영어 듣기에는

First of all, in terms of listening to English...

영어 듣기가 잘 되려면 많이 들어야 된다

To improve English listening skills, you need to listen a lot.

그러면 이제 또 질문하시겠죠

Then you'll probably ask another question, right?

그럼 무작정 많이 듣는다고 되느냐

So, does just listening a lot make a difference?

또 그건 아닙니다

That's not it either.

무작정 많이 듣는다고 되는 게 아니라

It's not just about listening a lot without purpose.

제대로 들어야 되는 거죠

You have to listen properly.

이 상대방이 어떤 말을 하는지

What the other person is saying.

제대로 들을 수 있어야 됩니다

You need to be able to listen properly.

예컨대 부정관사라고 하는

For example, what is called an indefinite article.

정관사 이런 거 있잖아요

There is something like a definite article.

A, 더 이런 거 있잖아요

A, there are more things like this, you know.

되게 구체적인 거

Very specific thing.

그런 거까지는

Not to that extent.

다 들으려면

To hear it all.

그런 걸 다 들어야만이

You have to hear all of that.

듣기가 제대로 된다는 것이고

That means you can listen properly.

그래서 한 문장을 듣더라도

So even if you hear just one sentence

제대로 들을 수 있어야

You need to be able to listen properly.

진짜 영어 듣기가 되는 거다라는 거죠

It means that you can really understand English listening.

뭐 이까지도 여러분이 잘 알고 계실 거라고 생각합니다

I think you all already know this well.

그래서 이제 많은 분들이 쓰시는 방법이

So now many people use the method of

반복 학습이죠

It's repetitive learning.

미드, 영화 이런 거 한 개 정해서

Choose one thing like a mid-series or a movie.

100번, 200번 보라

Look at number 100 and number 200.

이런 멘트, 이런 충고 주시는 분들

People who give comments like this, who offer advice like this.

되게 많은 걸로 제가 알고 있는데

I know it as a lot of things.

저도 해봤습니다

I have done it too.

근데 잘 알지 않습니다

But I don't really know.

안 됩니다

It won't do.

왜?

Why?

지루하니까

Because it's boring.

아, 너무 지루합니다 이거

Ah, this is so boring.

아무리 좋아하는 거라도

Even if it's something I really like

자기가 아무리 좋아하는 거라도

Even if it's something they really like.

진짜 100번, 200번 이렇게 보는 거는

Really watching it 100, 200 times like this...

진짜 쉽지 않은 일입니다

It's really not an easy task.

제가 다 해봤어요

I have tried everything.

애니메이션, 영화, 드라마, 프렌즈

Animation, movies, dramas, Friends.

제일 많이 나오는 게 프렌즈잖아요

The most popular one is Friends, right?

그래서 프렌즈도 해봤는데 안 됩니다

So I tried it with Friends, but it doesn't work.

재미가 없더라고요

It wasn't fun.

그래서 이게 또 왜 안 되나?

So why isn't this working?

일단, 중요한 것이

First of all, what’s important is

영어 공부하는 시간은

Time spent studying English is

영어 공부할 시간은

Time to study English

영어 공부할 시간을

Time to study English.

영어 공부할 시간을 100번 보내는 거

Spending time to study English 100 times.

이건 뭐 개인적인 차이도 있겠습니다만

This might be a matter of personal differences.

일단 우리가 100번 들을 시간이 없어요

First of all, we don't have time to listen to it 100 times.

우리는 일단 지금 듣고 계신 분도 그러시겠지만

I believe that many of you listening right now feel the same way.

대다수가 성인이잖아요

Most of them are adults, right?

대학생, 취준생

University student, job seeker

아니면 직장인

Or a office worker.

아니면 은퇴하신 분들

Or retired individuals.

은퇴하신 분들 안 들을 수도 있구요

Retired people might not hear it.

아무튼 일단 성인들이다 보니까

Anyway, since they are adults...

저도 3시간, 아니면 1시간, 이 정도 왔다 갔다 하는 건데

I also go back and forth for about 3 hours, or maybe 1 hour, something like that.

따라서 이 사이, 1시간에서 3시간 사이에 영어 공부를 다 해내지 못하면

Therefore, if you cannot finish studying English within this time frame of 1 to 3 hours...

이미 게임 셋이죠. 끝난 거죠.

It's already game set. It's over.

그래서 이 짧은 시간에 얼마나 많이 듣고

So how much have you listened in this short time?

또 한 문장을 듣더라도 제대로 들을 수 있는가

Can you hear it properly even if you listen to another sentence?

이건 정말 어려운 일입니다.

This is really a difficult task.

그리고 또 한계를 정해서 100번 본다는 것도 거의 불가능에 가까운 일이죠.

Setting a limit and watching it 100 times is almost impossible.

그래서 많은 분들이 어렵다.

So many people find it difficult.

결국에는 어학연수를 가야 되느냐라고 고민을 하시고

In the end, you are wondering whether you should go for language training.

실제로 그걸 행동으로 옮기시는 분들도 있죠.

In fact, there are people who put that into action.

그런데 그것도 안 됩니다. 왜?

But that doesn't work either. Why?

일단 어학연수를 가면 수학생 100명이라고 치면

If you go for language training, let's say there are 100 students in the math program.

거기에 진짜 거짓말 못하고 최소 50명에서 60명은 한국인입니다.

I swear, at least 50 to 60 of them are Koreans.

한국인이 너무 많아요.

There are too many Koreans.

여기저기 쉬는 시간 되면 한국인이에요.

When it's break time here and there, I'm Korean.

한국인, 한국말 하는 소리 들리고

I hear Koreans speaking Korean.

수업 중에도 한국어로 왔다 갔다 말하고

Speaking back and forth in Korean even during class.

그러니까 영어를 쓸 수가 없는 거죠.

So, I can't use English.

학원 끝나면 또 어디 갑니까?

Where are you going after the academy?

결국엔 또 한국인들하고 놀죠.

In the end, I'll just hang out with Koreans again.

그러면 영어를 쓰지가 않는 겁니다.

Then you don't use English.

주위에서 들리는 건 계속 한국말, 말하는 건 계속 한국말

The continuous sounds around me are in Korean, and the conversation is still in Korean.

영어를 쓰는 게 아니죠.

It's not about using English.

그냥 여행 간 거죠, 여행.

I just went on a trip, a trip.

그러다 보니까 어학연수도 실패한다는 거고

So, that means language training can also fail.

그러다가 제가 우연히 호스텔에 머문 때가 있었는데

Then, there was a time when I happened to stay in a hostel.

제가 그때 아주 재밌는 한국인 분 한 명을 만났어요.

I met a very interesting Korean person back then.

저랑 나이가 비슷한 남자분이셨는데

He was a man about the same age as me.

그분은 해외 경험이 한 번도 없으신 분이셨습니다.

He had never had any experience overseas.

그런데 중간중간에 왔다 갔다 하면서

However, I keep going back and forth in between.

외국인들하고 영어하는 거 보니까 아주 잘하시더라고요.

I saw you speaking English with foreigners, and you were doing really well.

그렇게 유창한 건 아니지만

I'm not that fluent, but...

듣고 말하는 게 정말 내추럴하게 들렸습니다.

Listening and speaking sounded really natural.

그래서 제가 물어봤죠.

So I asked.

어떻게 그렇게 잘하시냐 물어봤더니

When I asked how you do it so well,

그분은 한국에서만 기본적으로 자기가 좋아하는 영어 콘텐츠인가요?

Is that person basically only interested in English content they like while in Korea?

한국에서만 기본적으로 자기가 좋아하는 영어 콘텐츠를 접하면서 공부를 하셨다고 하고요.

They said they studied primarily by engaging with English content they liked while in Korea.

이번에 외국으로 오게 된 미국인데

This time, I've come to the United States from abroad.

미국으로 오게 된 계기는 교회에서 무슨 캠프 같은 게 있대요.

The reason I came to America is that there seems to be some kind of camp at the church.

그래서 글로벌 네트워크를 해서 사람들끼리 같이 캠프에 모여서

So, we have a global network where people gather together at the camp.

다국적 신도자들끼리 같이 하는 캠프가 있었는데

There was a camp for multinational believers to participate together.

그게 3개월 있었답니다.

It lasted for three months.

거기서 3개월 동안 같이 먹고 자고 하면서 캠프하다 보니까

While camping together for three months, eating and sleeping there, I realized that...

한국인은 자기 혼자고

Koreans are on their own.

그러다 보니까 거기에 온 외국인들하고

As a result, with the foreigners who came there...

여행을 하다 보니까 한국인은 자기 혼자고

While traveling, I noticed that Koreans are alone.

영어로 대화를 했어야 했겠죠. 하루 종일

We should have talked in English. All day long.

그렇게 영어를 계속 듣고

So, listening to English continuously

또 상대가 말하는 걸 들으려면

To hear what the other person is saying

제대로 기교를 들여야 되고

You need to put in proper technique.

그렇게 집중했어야 하는 환경이 오니까

When the environment that requires such focus comes.

영어를 막 잘하게 되더라는 겁니다.

It turns out I suddenly became good at English.

본인도 스스로 실력이 느는 게 느껴지더랍니다.

I can feel that my skills are improving on my own.

그런 자신감도 생기고

That kind of confidence is also growing.

그래가지고 영어를 아주 대출하게 하실 수 있게 된 거죠.

So you were able to make English very accessible.

아무튼 이런 여러 가지 종합적인 환경을 보면서

Anyway, looking at this various comprehensive environment

제가 느낀 점은 뭐냐

What I felt was...

일단 여러 가지가 있는데

There are various things, first of all.

정리를 해보면

To summarize...

우선 제일 중요한 것은

First and foremost, the most important thing is

내가 좋아하는 컨텐츠를

Content that I like.

혹은 영화, 미드 이런 걸 보는 겁니다.

Or it's about watching movies or TV shows.

우리가 영어 공부하는 목적이 뭡니까?

What is the purpose of us studying English?

일단 내가 좋아하는 거 마음껏

First of all, I can freely do what I like.

내가 보고 싶은 거 마음껏 듣고

Listen to whatever I want to see.

제대로 이해하려고 하는 거 아닙니까?

Aren't you trying to understand it properly?

그러니까 이제

So now...

이런 것들을 많이 접해야

You need to encounter many of these things.

우리가 일단 영어를 배우는

Let's start by learning English.

기본적인 목적을 달성하는 거거든요.

It's about achieving the basic objective.

그걸 쓸데없이 학원 가서

Going to the academy for that is pointless.

이상한 교재로 배우지 말고

Don't learn from strange materials.

재미없는 교재로 배우지 마시고

Don't learn with boring textbooks.

그냥 좋아하는 거 보세요.

Just watch what you like.

예를 들면 내가 스포츠를 좋아한다.

For example, I like sports.

그러면 ESPN

Then ESPN.

프리미어리그 이런 거

Premier League, stuff like that.

축구 같은 거 보면서

Watching something like soccer.

해설하는 거 들으면 됩니다.

You just need to listen to the explanation.

그런 식으로 영어 공부를 일단 해야 되고요.

You need to study English that way for now.

그래서

So

일단 내가 좋아하는 걸 먼저 본다라는 것이고

First, I believe in looking at what I like.

그러면

Then

이거를 또 한 번에 막

Do this all at once again.

내가 정복해야지 이런 생각보다는

Rather than thinking that I will conquer this,

이런 생각보다는

Rather than such thoughts

일단 내가 주어진 시간을 잘 활용해서

First of all, I will make good use of the given time.

적당한 선에서 적당한 양만큼 보시면 됩니다.

You can just look at it in moderation and in appropriate amounts.

일단 두 번째

두 번째 주의를 해야 될 사항은

이 보는 내용을 끊지 말고 봐야 됩니다.

그냥 자연스럽게 보라는 거죠.

우리 어렸을 때 한국어 접할 때 생각해 보시면

Think back to when we were young and encountered the Korean language.

아주 쉽게 이해가 되실 텐데

It will be very easy for you to understand.

우리가 한국어 처음에 어릴 때

When we were young and first learning Korean.

막 접할 때 모른다거나

When you first encounter it, you might not know.

나오면 사진 찾고 막 그랬습니까?

Did you look for pictures when it came out and stuff like that?

안 그랬습니다.

I didn't do that.

어렸을 때는

When I was young

뭐 이해가 되든 안 되든

Whether you understand it or not.

그냥

Just

그냥 지내는 겁니다.

I'm just getting by.

막 운동장 뛰어놀고

Just running around the playground.

밖에 나가서 뛰어놀고

Go outside and play.

뭐 애들하고

What about the kids?

막 말 되든 안 되든

Just say it whether it makes sense or not.

섞어가면서 하고

Do it while mixing.

어른들이 말씀하시면

When adults speak

아 그런가보다 하고 넘어가고

Oh, I guess so, and just move on.

그렇게 배웠지 않습니까?

Didn't you learn it that way?

근데 무슨 우리가 영어 제대로 하지 못하는데

But what if we can't speak English properly?

뭐 벌써부터 두꺼운 영어 사진

막 꺼내가지고 찾아보고

Just take it out and look for it.

모른다는 나올 때마다 찾아보고

Every time I say I don't know, I look it up.

여기서 중요한 건

입으로 소리를 낸다는 거

Making a sound with your mouth.

우물우물 하거나

머리로만 이해하지 말고

듣기에서 제일 중요한 건

소리에 익숙해지는 겁니다.

You get used to the sound.

소리의 속도

The speed of sound

얘네들이 내는 발음

The pronunciation they make.

이런 것들이

우리 귀에

그리고 우리 입에

And in our mouths

완벽하게 읽으면

If you read perfectly

그때부터 영어가

Since then, English has

이제 들리기 시작합니다.

It's starting to be heard now.

이해가 된다는 게 아니라

It's not that I understand.

영어가 들리기 시작하는 겁니다.

You begin to hear English.

그게 바로 영어 듣기입니다.

That's exactly what English listening is.

영어 듣기

Listening to English

우리가 착각하고 있는 게

What we are misunderstanding is

영어 듣기라고 하면

When it comes to listening in English,

영어 이해라고 생각하는데

I think it's understanding English.

막 모든 의미를 다 이해한다

I understand all the meanings at once.

이렇게 생각하시는데

You think this way.

그게 아닙니다.

That's not it.

영어 듣기를 하려면

To practice listening to English,

기본적으로

Basically

이 듣기가 돼야 됩니다.

This listening needs to be done.

소리

Sound

소리를 들어야 됩니다.

You need to hear the sound.

소리가 무슨 소리를 말하는지를 알아야

You need to know what kind of sound is being referred to.

아 이런 소리가

Oh, what is this sound?

나중에 뜻을 찾아보니까

Later, I looked up the meaning.

아 이런 뜻이구나

Oh, so this is what it means.

라고 하는 거죠.

That's what it means.

근데 우리는 지금

But we are now

소리도 못 따라가고 있고

I can't even keep up with the sound.

이 소리가 어떤 식으로

I don't even know.

이런 소리가

이거를 막

Stop this.

뜻만 알려고

계속 사전 찾고

Keep looking up in the dictionary.

해설본 보고 이러니까

안 되는 거죠.

It's not possible.

그러니까

막상 외국에 나가가지고

Once I actually went abroad,

사람들 외국인들

People, foreigners.

빨리 말하는 거 들으니까

Hearing you speak quickly,

도대체가 무슨 말하는지

What on earth are you talking about?

모르겠는 겁니다.

I don't know.

막 혀를 꼬아가지고

Just twisting my tongue.

강세도 전혀 이상한 데 있고

The accent is also completely strange.

도대체 이게 무슨 말하는 건지

What on earth does this mean?

알 수 없는 거죠.

It's unknown.

그래서 결국에는

So in the end

소리가 정말 중요하다.

Sound is really important.

그래서 이 소리가

So this sound is

우리한테 익숙해지면

Once you get used to us.

그 다음에 해야 될 거는

The next thing to do is

이해만 하면 됩니다.

You just need to understand.

아 아까 말씀드린 것처럼

그것만 이해하면 됩니다.

That's all you need to understand.

비교해가면서

While comparing

우리가 추측하는 거죠.

We are just guessing.

대충 보면

If you look at it roughly

라는 걸 알게 됩니다.

You will come to realize that.

그런 것들을

내가 좋아하는 컨텐츠를 통해서

Through the content that I like.

반복적으로

Repeatedly

그냥 자연스럽게

Just naturally.

보다 보면

If you look closely.

한계를 반복적으로

Repetitively facing limits.

보라는 게 아니라

It's not about seeing.

그냥 그런 내가 좋아하는 컨텐츠를

I just like the kind of content I enjoy.

계속 보다 보면

If you keep watching,

1년 가고 2년 가고

One year goes by, and then two years go by.

그러면

아주 쉽게

Very easily.

우리가 저절로

We naturally...

영어가 익숙해집니다.

You will become familiar with English.

우리가 지금

We are now.

10년, 20년 영어 공부했는데도
