기본적으로는 네덜란드에서 활동하고 있는

Basically, it is based in the Netherlands.

대표적인 미술 출판사죠

It's a representative art publishing house.

로마 파플리케이션의 출판물

Publication of the Rome Papalication

로마 파플리케이션은 1998년에 설립이 됐는데

The Roma application was established in 1998.

설립 과정이 어떤 개인에 의해서 세워진 곳이기도 하면서

It is a place established by a specific individual during the founding process.

동시에 이제 로어리 빌럼스라는 친구들

At the same time, now friends like Lorey Williams.

동료들과 함께 공동으로 설립된 출판 프로젝트입니다

This is a publishing project jointly established with colleagues.

지금 서울에 있는 출판사들 중에 비슷한 형태가 있을까요?

워크룸 같은 경우도 비슷할 수 있고

출판 활동들을 하고 계시는 거죠

You are engaged in publishing activities, right?

로마 같은 경우는 초기는 약간 동료들하고 시작을 해서

In the case of Rome, it started off with a few colleagues.

자기 친구들의 책을 많이 출판해오다가

Having published many of his friends' books,

지금은 여러 다른 이제 복제적인 어떤 미술 기관 쪽이랑도

Now, there are various other reproductive art institutions as well.

같이 협업을 해서 책을 만들고 있습니다

We are collaborating to create a book.

동료들이랑 시작한 게 점점 기관화되었고

What started with my colleagues has gradually become institutionalized.

더 폭이 넓어졌다고 할 수도 있겠네요

You could say that the width has become broader.

그렇죠 근데 이제 출판사라고 했을 때는

That's right, but when we talk about a publishing company...

우리가 생각하는 어떤 규모들이 있는데

There are certain scales that we think of.

로마 같은 경우에는 거의 지금 초기에는

In the case of Rome, almost at the very beginning,

이제 두 명의 친구들이랑 시작을 했는데

I have now started with two friends.

지금 혼자서 거의 운영을 하고 있다고 말씀을 드릴 수 있을 것 같아요

I think I can say that I'm almost running everything by myself right now.

그래서 혼자서 운영을 하기 때문에

So I run it alone.

낼 수 있는 어떤 책의 건수도 한계가 있고

There is a limit to the number of books that can be published.

실제 한 20권 이상은 내지는 못한다고 해요

They say they can't actually read more than about 20 volumes.

1년에

In a year

그래서 그 정도의 규모를 항상 유지하면서

So, maintaining a scale of that level at all times.

어찌 보면 18년, 17년을 유지해왔다고 보시면 될 것 같습니다

In a way, you could say that we have maintained it for 18 years or 17 years.

로마 퍼블리케이션이랑 인연이 깊으신가요?

Do you have a deep connection with Roma Publications?

저희가 더 복소사이트라는 공간을 만들고

We created a space called the more complex site.

그런 어떤 출판 활동을 할 때

When engaging in such publishing activities.

초기에 이제 봤었던 유럽의 출판물 가운데서는

Among the European publications I saw initially,

되게 대표적이었던 책이었던 것 같아요

I think it was a very representative book.

그래서 그 책의 영향을 분명히 받았고요

So I was definitely influenced by that book.

그리고 그런 책들의 존재를 알게 된

And became aware of the existence of such books.

어떤 가장 이제 시작점이 있었던 출판물이 아니었나 싶어요

I think it was a publication that had a starting point.

2005년쯤이었나요?

예전에도 한 번 더 복소사이트가 뭔가 확립되기 전에

책과 디자인에 관련된 전시를 하셨죠

You held an exhibition related to books and design, right?

제로온 디자인 센터에 있을 때

When I was at the Zero One Design Center

그게 몇 년이었죠?

What year was that?

그때가 이제 어찌 보면 로마의 책이

That time is now, in a way, the book of Rome.

제로온 디자인 센터에 선보인 것 같고

It seems to have been showcased at the ZeroOn Design Center.

At that time, it now seems like the book from Rome was showcased at the Zero One Design Center.

저는 2008년 때 이제 베르크플라츠 티포그라피라는

In 2008, I started Bergplatz Typography.

그 타이포그라피 공방 전시를 할 때

When there is an exhibition at that typography workshop.

저희가 간단하게 북샵이라는 타이틀로

We would simply title it "Book Shop."

책들을 선보이고 판매하는 공간을 만들었었죠

We created a space to showcase and sell books.

그때 이제 그 베르크플라츠 티포그라피의

At that time, now the typography of Bergplatz.

10주년을 기념하는 책이 있었는데

There was a book celebrating the 10th anniversary.

그 책이 어찌 보면은 로마 퍼블릭에 있어서 출간된 책이었죠

That book was, in a way, a published work in the Roman Republic.

거기에서부터 인연이 시작된 거라고 할 수도 있을까요?

Can we say that the relationship started from there?

로마와의 관계를 맺은 거는

Establishing a relationship with Rome.

이제 서점을 운영하면서 관계를 맺었다고 볼 수 있는데

어찌 보면 2007년, 2008년 그 시점부터 봤던 것 같습니다

정보를 보여줄 때

When displaying information

보통 작품이 있으면 작품 옆에

Usually, if there is a work, it is next to the work.

캡션을 두는 식으로 진행을 하는데

It proceeds in a way that includes captions.

저희는 워낙 책들이 많기 때문에

We have so many books.

이거 옆에 모든 캡션을 달게 되면은

If you add captions to everything next to this, then...

그것만으로 사람들이 너무 정보양 때문에

Because of that, people are overwhelmed by the amount of information.

이제 제대로 볼 수 없을 것 같다는 생각이 들어서

I get the feeling that I won't be able to see it properly anymore.

이제 고안해낸 장치가

The device that has now been devised

이제 캡션 수레라는 거죠 저희 쪽에서는

Now it's called a caption cart on our side.

그래서 이거를 왜

약간 보는 식으로 진행을 했는데

전시를 하면 좀 어쩔 수 없는 거 같아요

I think it's something that's inevitable when you hold an exhibition.

찢어가도 되냐고 물어본 사람도 좀 많았다고요

There were quite a few people who asked if it was okay to tear it apart.

왜냐면 이게 점선이 이렇게 되어 있어 가지고

Because the dotted line is like this.

맞아요 찍고 싶게 생겼어요

That's right, it looks like I want to take a picture.

점선은 그런 역할은 아닌데

Dashed lines don't serve that role.

그래서 하여튼 272권에 해당하는 모든 캡션을 다 달았고

So anyway, I added all the captions corresponding to volume 272.

이 캡션에 없는 책들도 물론 있죠 이 안에는

그리고 하나 꼭 소개해야 된다고 생각하는 작업 중에 하나는
