[파워인터뷰] 스테파니 장, 팰팍 시의원

네 파워 인터뷰 오늘 이 시간에는 11월 5일 치러지는 뉴저지주 본선거에서 재선에 도전하는 공화당 스테파니장 플리세이즈팍 시의원 모시고 이야기 나눠보겠습니다.

In today's Power Interview, we will talk with Republican Councilwoman Stephanie Chang from Piscataway, who is running for reelection in the general election in New Jersey on November 5th.

네 이제 선거 시즌 본격적인 캠페인으로 바쁘실 것 같은데요. 캠페인 일정 어떻게 계획하고 계신가요?

Yes, it seems like you will be busy with the full-scale campaign now that the election season has begun. How do you plan to schedule the campaign?

네 저도 이번 20일 다음주 금요일입니다. 저녁 6시 30분부터 포트리에 소재하고 있는 힐턴 더블트리 호텔에서 펀드레이징을 갖습니다.

Yes, I also have a fundraising event on the 20th, next Friday. It will take place at the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel located in Fort Lee, starting at 6:30 PM.

저를 아시는 많은 분들께서 스테파니장이 옳은 일을 할 것 같다. 여지껏 잘해왔고 앞으로도 잘할 것 같다 생각하시면 꼭 참석해주시고 오셔서 격려해주시기를 부탁드리겠습니다.

네 이번에 재선에 도전을 하시는데요. 선거 캠페인 일정 어떻게 계획하고 계신가요?

Yes, you are running for re-election this time. How are you planning your campaign schedule?

네 보통 11월 5일이 선거일인데요. 저는 한 한 달 반부터 시작을 했습니다. 일반 유권자분들도 좀 임박해서 이렇게 열심히 하는 후보들을 더 눈여겨보시는 경향이 있어요.

Yes, usually the election date is November 5th. I started about a month and a half ago. Regular voters tend to pay more attention to candidates who are working hard as the date approaches.

실망을 드리지 않기 위해서 아주 열심히 달리고 있습니다.

I am working hard to not disappoint you.

스테파니장이 그 정도 하면 열심히 해 이렇게 생각하시면 저는 감사할 것 같아요.

네 선거 공약이 있다면 좀 나눠주시죠.

If you have any election promises, please share them with us.

네 제가 3년 동안 시의원을 하면서 매일매일 느끼는 게 우리 삶의 질 그게 가장 중요합니다.

Yes, as I've served as a city councilor for three years, what I feel every day is that the quality of our lives is the most important thing.

그래서 어느 타운에 사는 주민이건 간에 일단 기본적인 그 삶의 질이 보장이 돼야 된다.

So regardless of which town a resident lives in, the basic quality of life must be guaranteed.

두플렉스 과도한 개발이 한 30년째 문제가 되고 있죠. 비가 오면 걱정하시는 주민이 많으시고 또 길거리 포장이나 전기줄에 닿는 나무들이나 또는 이렇게 울퉁불퉁한 인도 이런 거가 많이들 불편하셨어요.

Excessive development in Duplex has been a problem for about 30 years. Many residents are worried when it rains, and there have been many complaints about trees touching the street paving or power lines, as well as uneven sidewalks.

제가 공공사업국을 맡아 있는데 저희가 나무 특히나 이제 태풍이나 이런 거 올 때.

I am in charge of the Public Works Department, and we focus on trees, especially when typhoons or similar events occur.

그 전기줄에 닿지 않게 나무도 잘 자르는 일을 열심히 계속해서 하고 있고요.

I am also working hard to cut the trees so that they do not touch the electric wires.

비가 오면은 그 수어 때문에 지금 엔지니어들하고 또 타운에 일하시는 분들이 노심초사 지금 연구 중이십니다.

When it rains, the engineers and those working in the town are currently worried and conducting research due to that reason.

올해 같은 경우에 특히 이제 풀장이 1974년에 문 연 이후에 처음으로 그 파빌리언 지붕도 고치고 또 5년이나 닫혀있던 그 스낵바도 열고.

This year, especially since the pool opened in 1974, we have finally repaired the pavilion roof and reopened the snack bar, which had been closed for five years.

손질을 많이 했어요.

I did a lot of trimming.

그리고 이제 내년에는 또 꼬마들을 위한 스플래시 패드도 놓을 예정이고 사실 학교 시설은 학부모님들께서 좀 가보시면 저도 지난번에 고등학교 강당 가봤는데 아주 깨끗하게 고쳤더라고요.

And now next year, we are also planning to install a splash pad for the little ones, and in fact, if the parents take a look at the school facilities, I went to the high school auditorium last time, and it was very nicely renovated.

그러니까 잘 하고 있는 면도 있고 또 아직 손 못 대고 있는 것도 물론 있죠.

So there are aspects that I'm doing well in, and of course, there are still things I haven't tackled yet.

공무원들의 기강을 확립하고 자기들이 그 업무를 제대로 볼 수 있는 시스템을 좀 확립해야 된다.

We need to establish the discipline of public servants and create a system that enables them to properly perform their duties.

네 주민들의 삶의 질을.

The quality of life for your residents.

공무원들의 질을 개선할 수 있는 공공기반시설을 잘 갖추고 싶다.

I want to properly equip public infrastructure that can improve the quality of public officials.

잘 점검하고 싶다.

I want to check it carefully.

사실 뉴저지 내에서도 이 펠리세이즈 파크가 정치에 있어서는 보임물이다.

In fact, within New Jersey, this Palisades Park is a prominent figure in politics.

정치인들과 경찰이 굉장히 가깝다.

Politicians and the police are very close.

정경유착 이야기도 나오고 있습니다.

There are also discussions about the collusion between politics and business.

이 이야기는 뉴저지 내에서만 나오는 게 아니라 뉴욕에 사는 주민들도 저한테 이런 질문을 할 때가 있는데요.

This story doesn't only come from New Jersey; there are times when residents living in New York also ask me similar questions.

뉴저지 내에서도 이 펠리세이즈 파크에 주민들이 행복하게 잘 사실 수 있도록 하는 게 시의원이 되는 사람의 책임이고 목표라고 생각합니다.

I believe it is the responsibility and goal of a council member to ensure that the residents of this Palisades Park can live happily within New Jersey.

저는 올해 제가 시의원에 다시 출마하면서 이렇게 아주 공헌을 하고 싶어요.

This year, I want to contribute in this way as I run for city council again.

우리 깨끗하게 합시다.

서로서로 존경하고 그분들 모든 후보들이 가진 장점들을 주민들께 충분히 이해를 시키고.

Respect each other and help the residents fully understand the strengths of all the candidates.

그리고 어떤 어려운 사건이나 이런 것도 우리가 잘 해결해 나가야 돼요.

And we need to solve any difficult incidents or challenges well.

그렇지만 상대를 전적으로 비난하거나 모함하거나.

However, to completely blame or defame the other person.

네거티브 선거가 되면 안 될 것 같아요.

I don't think it should turn into a negative election.

네 루머를 퍼뜨리거나 상대방에게 해를 입히는 그런 아주 악습, 구태의연한 이런 패습은 올해로서 좀 다 펠박에서는 종결되는.

This year, such malicious practices of spreading rumors or harming others will come to an end in Pelbok.

정말 한인들, 특히 한인들끼리 싸우는 모습을.

It's really something to see Koreans, especially Koreans fighting each other.

유권자들이 보면 참.

It's truly something when voters see it.

씁쓸하실 거예요.

You will feel bitter.

저도 어떻게 보면은 캠페인을 하는 사람으로서 불안하기도 하고 아시겠지만 몇 년 전에는 제 목이 조지 워싱턴 다리 위에 걸려 있기도 했고요.

In a way, I also feel anxious as someone who is campaigning, and as you know, a few years ago my neck was on the George Washington Bridge.

그 다음에 진짜 좋은 후보를 선별하는 이런 어떤 그 눈을 점점 가지시게 되는 훌륭한 유권자들이 계셔줘야 저희 같은 사람들이 또 당선이 됐을 때 그분들을 존경하고.

After that, there must be wonderful voters who gradually develop the ability to select truly good candidates, so that when people like us are elected, we can respect those individuals.

믿고 저희들의 책임을 완수할 수 있죠.

We can fulfill our responsibilities with your trust.

네 최근에 펠리세스팍에서 차에 치여서 사망하거나 중상을 입는 한인들이 늘고 있습니다.

Recently, the number of Koreans who have died or been seriously injured in car accidents in Philadelphia has been increasing.

최근에는 지난 주말에 있었죠.

Recently, it was last weekend.

네 지난 8일입니다.

Yes, it was the 8th.

지난 일요일에 저녁 8시쯤 펠리세스팍에서 70대 한인이 길을 건너다가 차에 치이면서 중상을 입었었고요.

Last Sunday around 8 PM, a Korean man in his 70s was seriously injured after being hit by a car while crossing the street at Pellisess Park.

지난 7월에도 랜데비뉴와 헨레예비뉴 교차로 인근에서 50대 한인들이.

In July, Korean individuals in their 50s were near the Land Avenue and Henley Avenue intersection.

한 보행자가 차에 치이면서 숨지는 안타까운 일이 발생했습니다.

A tragic incident occurred where a pedestrian was hit by a car and died.

문제가 뭐라고 생각하시나요.

What do you think the problem is?

네 제일 중요한 것은 저희가 지금 교통 제한 속도가 길마다 좀 달라요.

Yes, the most important thing is that the speed limits vary from road to road.

그래서 타운 전체가 25마일이 아니고 센트럴 블루바드는 35마일까지 돼 있고 그러니까 이 주민들이 통일성이 없어지는 바람에 어느 길에는 마구 달리고.

So the entire town is not 25 miles, and Central Blue Boulevard goes up to 35 miles, which means that the residents lack consistency and drive recklessly on some roads.

네.

Yes.

그런 사고들이 빈번하게 일어나고 있습니다.

Such accidents are occurring frequently.

저희가 사고 통계를 보면 한 달에 거의 60, 70건이 있어요.

According to our accident statistics, there are almost 60 to 70 incidents a month.

매달 서로 부딪히고 하지만 이렇게 인명에 피해를 내는 일들이 생긴다는 것은 저는 개인적으로 죄송하고 책임을 통감하면서 우리가 건널목 문화.

I personally feel sorry and take responsibility for the fact that incidents like these occur that cause harm to human life, despite the fact that we clash with each other every month in our crossing culture.

그러니까 보행자가 발을 땅에 디뎠을 때 차도에 발을 디뎠을 때 차가 쓰지 않으면 티켓을 주는.

So, when a pedestrian steps onto the road, if the car doesn't stop, a ticket will be issued.

아.

Ah.

단속을 암행 단속을 그래서 또 많은 주민들이 그거를 못마땅해하고 막 질타를 하고 불법이다 그 자체가.

The undercover crackdown has caused many residents to be displeased and criticize it, claiming that it is illegal in itself.

그랬는데 보세요.

Well, look at this.

우리가 그렇게 했음에도 또 이런 사고가 일어납니다.

Despite our efforts, incidents like this still occur.

어쨌든 길에 저희가 그 하얀 선을 치죠.

Anyway, we draw that white line on the road.

이렇게 빗금을 해서 보행자가 많이 지나다니시는 길을 만들어서 그게 좀 시각적으로 보여지면 주민들이 조금 더 조심하고.

By creating a path with these diagonal stripes where many pedestrians pass by, it visually shows the area and encourages residents to be more careful.

네.

Yes.

그 자리를 지나갈 수 있게 너무 거리가 좀 어둡다 이렇게 생각하시는 주민이 많으세요.

Many residents think that it’s too dark to pass by that spot.

그래서 그것도 어떻게 하면 우리가 조금 가로등을 사이사이 하나씩 더 세울 수 있는지 이런 것도 알아보고 있습니다.

So we are looking into how we can add a few more streetlights in between as well.

네.

Yes.
