The holy gospel according to Luke.

그때 예수님께서는 백성에게 들려주시던 말씀들을 모두 마치신 다음

At that time, after Jesus had finished all the words He had spoken to the people,

카파르나움에 들어가셨다.

He entered Capernaum.

마침 어떤 백인 대장의 노예가 병들어 죽게 되었는데

Just then, a white captain's slave fell ill and was on the verge of death.

그는 주인에게 소중한 사람이었다.

He was a precious person to his master.

이 백인 대장이 예수님의 소문을 듣고

This white captain heard the rumors about Jesus.

유다인의 원로들을 그분께 보내어

Sending the elders of the Jews to Him.

와서 자기 노예를 살려주십사고 청하였다.

He came and begged to save his slave.

이들이 예수님께 다가와 이렇게 말하며 간곡히 청하였다.

They approached Jesus and earnestly requested this.

그는 선생님께서 이 일을 해주실 만한 사람입니다.

He is the kind of person that the teacher would help with this task.

그는 우리 민족을 사랑할 뿐만 아니라

He not only loves our nation,

우리에게 회당도 지어주었습니다.

They also built us a synagogue.

그리하여 예수님께서 그들과 함께 가셨다.

And so, Jesus went with them.

그런데 백인 대장의 집에서 그리 멀지 않은 곳에 이르셨을 때

However, when you arrived at a place not far from the white captain's house

백인 대장이 친구들을 보내어 예수님께 아뢰었다.

The centurion sent his friends to Jesus to inform him.

주님, 수고하십시오.

Lord, please take care.

저는 주님을 제 지붕 아래로 모실 자격이 없습니다.

I am not worthy to have the Lord under my roof.

그래서 제가 주님을 찾아뵙기에도 합당하지 않다고 여겼습니다.

So I thought I was not worthy to come to the Lord.

그저 말씀만 하시어 제 종이 낫게 해주십시오.

Please just say the word and let my servant be healed.

사실 저는 상관 밑에 메인 사람입니다만

Actually, I am the main person under my boss.

제 밑으로도 군사들이 있어서

There are soldiers under my command as well.

이 사람에게 가라 하면 가고 저 사람에게 오라 하면 옵니다.

If you tell this person to go, they go, and if you tell that person to come, they come.

또 제 노예들어 이것을 하라 하면 합니다.

If my slaves are told to do this, they will do it.

이 말을 들으시고 예수님께서는 백인 대장에게 감탄하시며

Hearing this, Jesus was amazed at the Roman centurion.

당신을 따르는 군중에게 돌아서서 말씀하셨다.

He turned to the crowd that was following him and spoke.

내가 너희에게 말한다.

I tell you.

나는 이스라엘에서 이런 믿음을 본 일이 없다.

I have never seen this kind of faith in Israel.

심부름 왔던 이들이 집에 돌아가 보니

When those who had come on an errand returned home, they found...

노예는 이미 건강한 몸이 되어 있었다.

The slave had already become a healthy body.

주님의 말씀입니다.

오늘은 성 고르넬리오 교황님과

성 치프리아노 주교님 순교자 기념일입니다.

It is the feast day of Saint Cipriano, the martyr.

추기를 맞이하신 모든 분들에게 축하의 인사를 드립니다.

I would like to extend my congratulations to everyone who is celebrating Chuseok.

오늘 기억하고 있는 두 분의 성의는

Today, the sincerity of the two people I remember is...

열렬하고 확고한 신앙으로

With fervent and steadfast faith.

교회의 일치를 이뤄내신 분들이십니다.

They are the ones who have achieved the unity of the church.

고르넬리오 교황님과 치프리아노 주교님이 사셨던 시대는

The era in which Pope Cornelius and Bishop Cyprian lived.

로마의 박해식이었고

It was the persecution of Rome.

이 시기 동안에 다수의 신자들이

During this time, many believers...

신앙을 지키기 위하여 순교하였습니다.

I was martyred to uphold my faith.

하지만 여러 가지 이유로

But for various reasons

배교를 하는 사람들도 많이 생겼습니다.

Many people have also turned away from their faith.

박해의 동기는 신자들이 로마의 신들에게

The motive for the persecution is that the believers do not worship the Roman gods.

분양할 것을 거부하였기 때문입니다.

It is because they refused to sell.

배교자들은 당연히 로마의 압력에 굴복해서

The apostates naturally succumbed to the pressure from Rome.

그 신전에서 분양한 사람들이었는데

They were people who were devoted at that temple.

그 중에는 분양은 하지 않고

Among them, there is no sale.

분양을 했다는 지적을 받았고

I received criticism for having sold the property.

그의 증서를 받기 위해

To receive his certificate.

로마 관리들을 돈으로 매수한 사람들도 있었다고 합니다.

It is said that there were people who bribed Roman officials with money.

반면에 영웅적인 신앙의 증거로

On the other hand, as evidence of heroic faith.

가혹한 고문을 받고 옥살이를 하다가

After enduring brutal torture and imprisonment,

석방된 증거자들도

Even the released witnesses

그때 당시 교회 안에는 상당수 있었습니다.

At that time, there were quite a number of people in the church.

이제 그 혹독한 박해가 끝나고

Now that the harsh persecution has ended

교회 안에 갈등이 일어나게 됩니다.

Conflicts arise within the church.

그것은 누구나 짐작하듯이

As anyone can guess,

배교자와 증거자들 사이의 갈등이었습니다.

It was a conflict between the apostates and the witnesses.

배교자들이 잘못을 이우치고

Apostates will repent for their mistakes.

교회로 돌아오려고 할 때

When trying to return to the church.

그들을 받아들여야 한다는 주장이 있었는가 하면

There were arguments for having to accept them.

반대로 배교를 한 사람에 대해서는

On the contrary, regarding those who have apostasized,

절대로 교회가 용서를 베풀어서는 안 된다는

The church must never offer forgiveness.

엄격주의를 따르는 사람들도 있었습니다.

There were also people who adhered to strict discipline.

이것이 당시 교회의 가장 큰 현안이었고

This was the biggest issue for the church at that time.

교회가 풀어야 할 숙제였습니다.

It was a task that the church had to solve.

어떻게 하면 좋았을까요?

What could I have done better?

이 시기에 고르넬리오 성인과 치프리아노 성인은

During this time, Saint Cornelius and Saint Cyprian are

하느님의 지혜로 이 문제를 풀어나가셨습니다.

You resolved this issue with God's wisdom.

당시 교회 안에 팽배해 있던

prevalent within the church at that time

엄격주의와 방임주의라는 양극단 사이에서

Between the extremes of strictness and permissiveness.

중용의 길을 발견하셨고

You have discovered the path of moderation.

교회의 일체를 이루어내셨기 때문입니다.

고르넬리오 교황님의 재임 기간 동안

During the papacy of Pope Cornelius.

특히 주력하셨던 일은

The work you focused on particularly was

배교를 했던 신자들을 용서해서

Forgive the believers who have apostasized.

교회로 받아들이는 화해의 정책이었습니다.

It was a policy of reconciliation accepted by the church.

치프리아노 성인은 배교자들에게

Saint Ciprian said to the apostates

일정한 참여의 정책을 받았고

I received a policy of regular participation.

결차를 거치게 한 다음

After going through the inspection.

용서를 해줘야 한다고 주장했습니다.

They claimed that forgiveness must be granted.

세상의 모든 일에는 늘상 양지와 음지가 존재합니다.

In everything in the world, there is always a presence of light and darkness.

오늘 복음에 나오는 백인대장과 같은

Just like the centurion in today's gospel.

그런 믿음을 모두가 가졌다면 너무나 좋겠지만

It would be wonderful if everyone had that kind of belief, but...

그럴 수 없는 시간을 살아가는 많은 사람들도 있습니다.

Many people live in a time where that is not possible.

그래서 오늘은 하느님을 잊고 살아가는

So today, living while forgetting God

주변의 형제 자매들을 위해서

For the siblings around me.

기도를 드리면 더 좋을 것 같습니다.

It would be better if we offer a prayer.

하느님을 잊고 살아가는 모든 사람들도 있습니다.

There are also people who live without remembering God.
