자 오늘은 연이 낭자와 버들 도령이라는 이야기를 들려줄거에요

옛날 옛날에 연이라는 착한 여자아이가 살고 있었어요

연이에겐 마음씨가 아주 나쁜 새엄마가 있었는데 연이를 너무나 미워했죠

Yeon had a very cruel stepmother who hated her a lot.

그래서 아주 힘든 일들을 연이한테 시키곤 했어요

So I often made Yeonhi do very difficult tasks.

그러던 어느 날 눈이 펑펑 내리는 추운 겨울에

One day, on a cold winter day when it was snowing heavily...

그만 새엄마가 연이를 집 밖으로 쫓아다니고

Then the stepmother chased Yeoni out of the house.

연이야 내가 입맛이 없어서 싱싱한 상추를 좀 먹어야겠다

Yeon, I don't have much of an appetite, so I think I should eat some fresh lettuce.

그러니 얼른 밖에 나가서 상추를 뜯어오거라

So hurry up and go outside to pick some lettuce.

어머니 이렇게 추운 겨울에 어디서 상추를 뜯어온단 말이에요

Mom, where are you going to pick lettuce in this cold winter?

뭐라고? 이것이? 상추를 뜯어오라면 뜯어올 것이지

What? This? If you tell me to pick some lettuce, I'll pick it.

어디서 어른한테 꼬박꼬박 말대답이야?

연이는 할 수 없이 바구니를 들고 집을 나섰죠

Yeon-i had no choice but to leave home with a basket.

그런데 저런! 밖으로 나오자 차가운 눈보라에 연이의 귀가 꽁꽁 얼어붙고 말았어요

Oh no! As soon as she went outside, the cold snowstorm froze Yeoni's ears solid.

불쌍한 연이는 힘들게 산과 들을 돌아다니며 상추를 찾고 또 찾았어요

그러다 다리가 너무 아파서 나무 아래에 앉아 쉬고 있는데

Then my legs hurt so much that I sat down under a tree to rest.

연이의 눈에 커다란 바위가 보였어요

빨강 노란 꽃들이 활짝 피어서 살랑살랑 바람이 불면 꽃향기가 이리저리 퍼져나갔고요

The red and yellow flowers bloomed brightly, and as the gentle breeze blew, the floral fragrance spread everywhere.

그리고 키다리 버들나무엔 버들잎이 한들한들 흔들리고 있었죠

And the tall willow tree had its leaves swaying gently.

연이는 아름다운 동굴 속으로 들어갔어요

Yeon went into a beautiful cave.

우와 여기에 궁정같은 집도 있잖아 혹시 누구 계세요?

Wow, there's even a palace-like house here. Is anyone home?

그러자 문이 열리고 왕자님처럼 생긴 버들도령이 나왔어요

Then the door opened, and a bird-like figure resembling a prince appeared.

여기는 아무나 들어올 수 없는 곳인데 어떻게 찾아오셨을까요?

This is a place that not just anyone can enter. How did you find your way here?

아 저 그게 새어머니가 상추를 뜯어오라고 하셔서 산속을 헤매다가 여기까지 오게 됐어요

Oh, um, my stepmother asked me to pick some lettuce, so I got lost in the mountains and ended up here.

이겨울에 상추라 제가 도와줄 수 있을 것 같은데요

I think I can help you with lettuce this winter.

버들도령은 버들잎을 뜯어서 잎김을 후 불었어요

The willow tree boy plucked the willow leaves and blew on the leaf to cool it down.

와 파릇파릇 상추가 쑥쑥 자라났어요

아 여기 상추 있습니다 가져가세요

그 뒤로 연이는 새엄마가 상추를 뜯어오라고 시킬 때마다

Since then, Yeon-i has been told by her stepmother to go pick lettuce every time.

버들도령이 상추를 뜯어오라고 말했어요

The willow spirit told me to pick some lettuce.

예사는 동굴 앞에 서서 이렇게 외쳤어요

Yesa stood in front of the cave and shouted like this.

버들도령아 연이가 왔다 문 열어라

"Hey, Beodeul, Yeon-i has come. Open the door."

덕분에 연이는 눈이 펑펑 내리는 겨울에도 초록초록 상추를 구해갈 수가 있었죠

Thanks to you, Yeon was able to get green lettuce even in the heavy snowfall of winter.

그런데 새엄마는 연이에게 상추를 받을 때마다 너무나 궁금했어요

However, the stepmother was always very curious whenever she received lettuce from Yeon-i.

아니 이 겨울엔 무슨 수로 상추를 가져오는 거지요?

How on earth are we going to get lettuce in this winter?

아유 궁금해라 그래 연이 뒤를 몰래 따라가 봐야겠어

그래서 하루는 새엄마가 연이에게 상추를 구해오라고 시킨 뒤

So one day, the stepmother told Yeon-i to go find some lettuce.

몰래 살금살금 버들도령이 사는 동굴까지 따라가고 만 거예요

I quietly sneaked and followed the willow spirit to its cave.

버들도령아 연이가 왔다 문 열어라

"Budol, Yeon-i has come. Open the door."

아 세상에 동굴 속으로 들어가지요?

아이고 이걸 어쩌죠?

Oh dear, what should I do about this?

새엄마가 그만 연이가 동굴 속에서 상추를 가지고 나오는 걸 다 보고 말았어요

The stepmother ended up seeing Yeon-i come out of the cave with lettuce.

그리고 다음날 새엄마는 연이에게 집안일을 시키고 동굴을 찾아갔어요

And the next day, the stepmother made Yeon do housework and went to find a cave.

하 여기가 상추가 자라는 신비의 동굴이란 말이지?

So this is the mysterious cave where lettuce grows?

그럼 문을 열어볼까?

버들도령아 연이가 왔다 문 열어라

Budeul, Yeoni has come. Open the door.

연이가 온 줄 알고 동굴 앞으로 나온 버들도령은 깜짝 놀랐어요

The young deer, thinking Yeon-i had come, was taken by surprise as he emerged in front of the cave.

어? 누, 누구십니까? 당신은 연이 낭자가 아니잖아요

Huh? Who, who are you? You're not Lady Yeon-i, are you?

시끄러워! 이렇게 좋은 곳이 세상에 있었단 말이지?

It's noisy! I can't believe there's such a good place in the world!

이제부터 여긴 다 내 거야 내 거라고!

새엄마는 버들도령을 집안에 가둔 다음 초가집을 불태워버렸어요

The stepmother locked the willow boy inside the house and then burned down the thatched cottage.

그리고 다시 집에 돌아와선 아무 일도 없었다는 듯 연이에게 상추를 뜯어오라고 심부름을 시켰죠

And after returning home, as if nothing had happened, I asked Yeon-i to go and pick some lettuce.

그래서 연이는 바구니를 들고 동굴로 갔어요

So Yeon-i went to the cave holding a basket.

버들도령아 연이가 왔다 문 열어라

"Hey, Buddleia, Yeon-i has come. Open the door."

어 이상하다 왜 문이 안 열리지?

Huh, that's strange. Why won't the door open?

버들도령아 연이가 왔다 문 열어라

"Hey, Beodeul, Yeoni is here. Open the door."

아무리 외쳐도 문이 열리지 않자

No matter how much I shout, the door won't open.

연이는 힘껏 돌문을 밀고 동굴로 들어갔어요

Yeon pushed the stone door with all her might and entered the cave.

그런데 동굴 속은 예전과는 달랐어요

However, the inside of the cave was different from before.

꽃도 나무도 집도 다 불타버렸고

The flowers, the trees, and the house have all burned down.

그리고 그 한가운데 버들도령이 쓰러져 있었어요

And in the middle of it all, the willow tree young man was collapsed.

버들도령 제발 눈 좀 떠보세요

Please open your eyes, Budol.

연이는 버들도령이 가여워서 울고 또 울었어요

Yeoni cried and cried because she felt sorry for the willow tree's young shoot.

그러다 땅바닥에 버려져 있는 새어머니의 나물바구니를 보고 말았어요

Then I ended up seeing my stepmother's vegetable basket thrown on the ground.

새어머니가 그러신 게 분명해

It's clear that my stepmother said that.

이게 다 나 때문이야

It's all my fault.

연이는 마음이 너무 아팠어요

Yeon was very heartbroken.

그래서 동굴 밖으로 나와서도 엉엉 울면서

그렇게 한참을 걷고 있는데

갑자기 커다란 나무 뒤에서

하얀 수염이 길게 난 할아버지가 나타나셨어요

A grandfather with a long white beard appeared.

아까부터 계속 울고 있구나

왜 울고 있는 게냐

Why are you crying?

할아버지 저 때문에 버들도령이

Grandpa, because of me, the willow spirit...

연이는 할아버지에게

Yeon is with her grandfather.

이제까지 있었던 모든 걸

모든 일들을 다 이야기했어요

연이야 울지 마라 연이야

내가 너에게 하얀 병 빨간 병 그리고 파란 병을 주마

I will give you a white bottle, a red bottle, and a blue bottle.

하얀 병을 뿌리면 살이 돋고

When you sprinkle the white powder, flesh grows.

빨간 병을 뿌리면 피가 돌고

When you sprinkle the red potion, blood circulates.

파란 병을 뿌리면 숨을 쉬며 살아난단다

If you sprinkle the blue potion, you will breathe and come back to life.

그럼 버들도령이 다시 살아날 수 있는 거죠?

So the deer spirit can come back to life again?

연이는 하얀 병 빨간 병 파란 병을 들고 빠르게 달렸어요

Yeon ran quickly while holding a white bottle, a red bottle, and a blue bottle.

그리고 버들도령이 쓰러져 있는 동굴에 도착했어요

And we arrived at the cave where the youthful leader was collapsed.

버들도령 제가 하얀 병을 뿌려드릴게요

I'll spray the white potion for you, Master.

세상에 정말 할아버지 말대로

"Truly, in the world as grandfather said."

새살이 다시 돋아났어요

New flesh has emerged again.

우와 이번엔 빨간 병을 뿌릴게요

Wow, this time I will spray the red bottle.

우와 버들도령의 몸에 다시 피가 돌기 시작하자

얼굴이 복숭아처럼 분홍빛이 됐어요

마지막으로 파란 병을 뿌려드릴게요

연이 낭자 덕분에 제가 다시 살아났어요

연이의 눈에서 눈물이 반짝이며 떨어졌고

Tears sparkled and fell from Yeoni's eyes.

버들도령은 연이 낭자의 눈물을 닦아줬어요

The willow spirit wiped away Lady Yeon's tears.

이제 다 괜찮으니까 울지 말아요 연이 낭자

Now that everything is okay, don't cry, Yeon-i.

그리고 내가 살던 하늘나라로 함께 떠나요

And let's leave together for the heavenly place where I lived.

버들도령은 연이의 손을 꼭 잡고

The willow spirit tightly held Yeoni's hand.

무지개의 미끄럼틀을 탄 뒤 구름으로 된 진검다리를 건너 하늘나라로 올라갔어요.

After sliding down the rainbow slide, I crossed the stone bridge made of clouds and went up to the heavenly kingdom.

그리고 하늘나라에서 버들도령과 연희남자는 오래오래 행복하게 잘 살고 있답니다.

And in heaven, the willow spirit and Yeonhui are living happily ever after.
