A verdade é que isto vai parecer um bocadinho insólito, se calhar, e meio caricato, mas

The truth is that this is going to seem a bit unusual, perhaps, and somewhat comical, but

eu nunca tive muito a posição da escrita, muito menos a posição da escrita de livros.

I have never had much of a position on writing, let alone on writing books.

E acabei por publicar de uma forma um bocado...

And I ended up publishing it in a bit of a...

Não era uma coisa em que eu tivesse pensado muito, nem sequer tivesse pensado medianamente

It wasn't something I had thought about much, nor even thought about moderately.

Agora, quer dizer, se fizer um exercício de tentar pensar quando é que comecei a escrever

Now, it means, if I do an exercise of trying to think about when I started writing.

mais ou a ter mais gosto por isso, foi quando o mundo dos blogs apareceu.

E aí eu comecei a criar uma espécie de disciplina, era uma coisa mais ou menos diarística e comecei

Normalmente eram retratos, desabafos, palermices, observações, andava mais por aí, era raríssimo.

E tinhas noção dos leitores, tinhas muitos leitores, quando é que começaste a perceber

And were you aware of the readers, did you have many readers, when did you start to realize?

Were there people who liked what you were writing?

Não, não.

No, no.

E depois acabei por começar a trocar impressões com várias pessoas e a conhecer uma série

And then I ended up starting to exchange impressions with several people and getting to know a series.

de gente por causa disso.

E isso foi interessante, de facto.

And that was interesting, indeed.

Pessoas que tinham os mais variados registros e os mais distintos objetivos.

People who had the most varied records and the most distinct goals.

Alguns queriam ser políticos, outros queriam só ser comentadores, outros queriam dizer

Some wanted to be politicians, others only wanted to be commentators, others wanted to say.

E isso foi interessante.

And that was interesting.

E aí comecei a perceber que havia um público, de facto.

And then I began to realize that there was indeed an audience.

Coisa que acabou por criar alguma dependência.

Something that ended up creating some dependency.

Porque depois sentia que se não publicasse nada estava a defraudar aquele grupo de pessoas

Because later I felt that if I didn't publish anything, I was failing that group of people.

Então e como é que surgiu a publicação?

It was not my initiative.

Eu fui empurrado para publicar, na verdade.

I was pushed to publish, actually.

Graças a um dos blogs conheci as pessoas da Booktail.

Thanks to one of the blogs, I met the people from Booktail.

Booktailers, sítio onde eu vim a trabalhar mais tarde, inclusive.

Booktailers, the place where I later came to work, actually.

E lá estava.

And there it was.

Um grupo de pessoas conheci por causa dessa rotina da escrita.

I met a group of people because of this writing routine.

E na altura o Paulo, que tinha fundado a Booktailers há relativamente pouco tempo, acompanhava

At that time, Paulo, who had founded Booktailers relatively recently, was accompanying.

o que eu ia escrevendo no blog.

what I was writing on the blog.

E dizia-me que se calhar eu devia experimentar fazer alguma coisa, se tinha alguma coisa

And he was telling me that maybe I should try to do something, if I had something.

E eu, não, não tenho.

And I, no, I don't have.

Nunca tive nada guardado.

I have never kept anything.

Nada de nada.

Nothing at all.

Se tinha alguma ideia para um livro, não tinha.

If I had any idea for a book, I didn't.

E começou...

And it started...

A pressionar-me bastante com isso.

Pressuring me quite a bit with that.

E eu acabei por pensar, bem, posso tentar.

And I ended up thinking, well, I can try.

Porque não, eu, pá, devia-se experimentar, não sei o quê, porque eu acho que podias

Why not, man, it should be tried, I don’t know what, because I think you could.

ter um registro interessante.

E na altura comecei a pensar mais a sério no assunto.

And at that time I started to think more seriously about the subject.

Comecei a pensar numa história para contar.

I started to think about a story to tell.

E escrevi um primeiro capítulo.

And I wrote a first chapter.

E ele entregou esse primeiro capítulo ao Francisco José Viegas, que tinha também

refundado recentemente a Quetzal.

E eu trabalhava com o Francisco indiretamente, ou melhor, de uma forma lateral à escrita,

E eu, pronto, eu senti-me legitimado.

Pensei-lhe se este tipo é experiente e achou que isto podia ter alguma saída.

I was thinking if this guy is experienced and thought that this could have some outcome.

Então, pronto.

A partir daí foi um exercício complicado, porque eu não tinha esse hábito de escrita,

From there it was a complicated exercise because I didn't have that writing habit.

Nem me apetecia assim tanto, mas depois tinha-me comprometido e isso acabou por falar mais

I didn't really feel like it, but then I had committed myself and that ended up speaking more.

Mas depois desse, ganhaste-lhe o gosto ou foste obrigado a escrever mais quatro?

Também são livros...

São livros bastante diferentes uns dos outros e, de facto, gostei da experiência, foi.

Não tenho aquela visão da tortura da escrita, isso não tenho.

I don't have that vision of the torture of writing, I don't have that.

Esse livro custou-me um bocado, porque, de facto, achava que não tinha mão e porque

a minha natureza, em geral, e principalmente na escrita, é muito repentista.

My nature, in general, and especially in writing, is very spontaneous.

Eu acho que consigo funcionar bem em várias coisas, em várias áreas, por ser um repentista

I think I can perform well in various things, in various areas, because I am a spontaneous poet.

e ser um observador sagaz.

Mas não sou uma pessoa de profundidade, nunca fui.

Isto ficou para o bem e para o mal, assim que as coisas se passam.

Sinto também uma polução da escrita, isso não sinto.

E tu tiveste que ir à procura de uma ideia concreta para aquilo.

And you had to go look for a concrete idea for that.

Ou seja, não foi, imagino eu, não é uma ideia que te apareceu do nada

In other words, it wasn't, I imagine, an idea that just came to you out of nowhere.

e que tu decidiste, vou escrever um livro.

And that you decided, I'm going to write a book.

How does one go about searching for an idea...

Bom, o que eu acabei por fazer foi tentar mover-me

Well, what I ended up doing was trying to move.

em territórios que me fossem familiares,

in territories that were familiar to me,

que seria uma maneira de tentar fazer alguma coisa

that would be a way to try to do something

que eu conseguisse dominar e que me sentisse mais confortável.

that I could master and that I felt more comfortable with.

E daí ter decidido escrever sobre um universo

And so I decided to write about a universe.

que eu, uns anos antes, tinha observado diariamente.

E daí ter escolhido situar um livro na linha de Sintra,

And so I chose to set a book in the Sintra area,

num período contemporâneo,

in a contemporary period,

uma linha que eu frequentei diariamente durante dois anos.

Fazia a completa todos os dias, a ida para o trabalho.

I did the complete route every day, the commute to work.

E não tomava notas, mas via muito

e via as diferenças do sítio onde eu vivia e da dinâmica das coisas.

I could see the differences in the place where I lived and in the dynamics of things.

E quando realmente tive de avançar para o livro,

que me tenha chamado a atenção com força recentemente, ou não?

E daí ter decidido conversar numa história que se enquadrasse nesse universo.

And so I decided to have a conversation in a story that fit within that universe.

E depois aproveitei também,

sobre uns episódios da história do Império Romano,

que eu acabei por relacionar.

Eu pensei, bem, se eu vou escrever um livro, tenho que falar sobre isto também.

I thought, well, if I'm going to write a book, I have to talk about this too.

Therefore, I have to find a way to merge the two things.

E foi uma maneira de me sentir,
