Em outro momento deste texto, me referi ao fato de não termos ainda resolvido o problema da tensão entre a autoridade e a liberdade.

Inclinados a superar a tradição autoritária tão presente entre nós, resvalamos para formas licenciosas de comportamento

e descobrimos autoritarismo onde só houve o exercício legítimo da autoridade.

and we discovered authoritarianism where there was only the legitimate exercise of authority.

Recentemente, jovem professor universitário de opção democrática comentava comigo o que lhe parecia ter sido um desvio seu no uso de sua autoridade.

Recently, a young university professor with a democratic outlook was discussing with me what he seemed to perceive as a deviation in his use of authority.

Disse constrangido ter se oposto a que um aluno de outra classe continuasse na porta entreaberta de sua sala

He said, embarrassed, that he had opposed a student from another class continuing at the partially open door of his classroom.

Exatamente porque aposto nela,

porque sei que sem ela a existência só tem valor e sentido na luta em favor dela,

because I know that without her existence has value and meaning only in the struggle for her,

a liberdade sem limite é tão negada quanto a liberdade asfixiada ou castrada.

Unlimited freedom is as much denied as suffocated or castrated freedom.

O grande problema que se coloca o educador ou a educadora de opção democrática

é como trabalhar no sentido de fazer possível,

Foi isso, pelo menos, o que marcou a minha experiência de filho, de irmão,

A liberdade amadurece no confronto com outras liberdades,

É claro que nem sempre a liberdade do adolescente faz a melhor decisão com relação a seu amanhã.

O que há de pragmático em nossa existência não pode sobrepor-se ao imperativo ético de que não podemos fugir.

A gente vai amadurecendo todo dia, ou não?

We grow up every day, or not?

A autonomia, enquanto amadurecimento do ser para si, é processo, é vir a ser.

Autonomy, as the maturation of being for oneself, is a process, a becoming.

Não ocorre em data marcada.

É nesse sentido que uma pedagogia da autonomia tem de estar centrada em experiências estimuladoras

Para quem não é possível autoridade sem liberdade.
