He is the founder of the LGBT Tricolor supporters group, director of the National LGBT Union of Bahia, state youth advisor, state LGBT advisor, and journalism student, Onan Rudá. How are you, Onan?

Eu fundei a torcida LGBT Tricolor, que é uma torcida que faz movimento dentro do futebol, de inclusão de pessoas LGBTs, né, eu sou diretor da União Nacional LGBT, que é o que eu fazia antes de fundar a torcida, já tem alguns anos na realidade que eu me articulo como diretor da UNA, e um conselho estadual LGBT também, não é isso que você falou?

I founded the Tricolor LGBT fan group, which is a group that advocates for the inclusion of LGBT people in football. I am the director of the National LGBT Union, which is what I was doing before founding the fan group. I have actually been active as a director of the UNA for a few years now, and I also serve on a state LGBT council, isn't that what you mentioned?

Pronto, e também tô representando a UNA LGBT da Bahia dentro do conselho estadual, com destaque pra que a UNA foi a entidade eleita com mais votos na eleição do conselho, entre todas as entidades que disputavam esses espaços, né.

Sure, I am also representing the UNA LGBT of Bahia within the state council, highlighting that UNA was the organization elected with the most votes in the council election, among all the entities that were competing for these spaces, right.

Então, eu tenho um histórico assim que tem a ver com essas lutas populares, com a busca de políticas públicas que construam inclusão social, perspectiva pra grupos que historicamente são tidos como vulneráveis na sociedade, entendeu?

So, I have a background related to these popular struggles, seeking public policies that foster social inclusion, perspectives for groups that have historically been considered vulnerable in society, you know?

Sim, muito importante.

E pra quem não sabe, gente, o ciberativismo basicamente é você tá justamente fazendo isso que o UNAM faz, você tá se posicionando politicamente, fazendo uma mobilização nas mídias sociais digitais.

And for those who don't know, folks, cyber activism is basically you doing exactly what UNAM does, you are positioning yourself politically, making a mobilization on digital social media.

A gente trouxe ele aqui pra gente tentar entender um pouquinho o que é isso na prática.

We brought him here to try to understand a little bit what this is in practice.

UNAM, quando você percebeu que a internet, né, em especial com a chegada das redes sociais, então Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,

UNAM, when did you realize that the internet, especially with the advent of social networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,

era um espaço que você poderia estar aproveitando pra levantar essas discussões que você tá à frente hoje em dia?

It was a space where you could be taking advantage of to raise these discussions that you are leading nowadays?

Olha, quando surgiu o Orkut, né, alguns anos atrás, duas décadas atrás, mais ou menos,

Look, when Orkut came out, right, a few years ago, about two decades ago, more or less,

é aquele artifício das comunidades, né, que a gente batia muito papo ali.

It's that trick of communities, right, that we talked a lot about there.

Ali já era um espaço de bastante, vamos dizer assim, conflito de opiniões, né, muito localizado, muito específico,

There was already quite a space there, let's say, for conflict of opinions, right, very localized, very specific,

mas todo mundo já participou de uma polêmica no Orkut.

But everyone has already taken part in a controversy on Orkut.

Todo mundo.

Everybody.

É verdade.

It's true.

Mas eu acho que isso aqui não invadiu a agenda social das pessoas.

But I think this didn't invade people's social schedule.

Por quê? Porque você tinha que fazer parte de uma comunidade pra que aquilo ali ganhasse algum tipo de reverberação.

Why? Because you needed to be part of a community for that to gain any kind of resonance.

Eu acho que a mudança do algoritmo do Facebook, que permite que, por exemplo, eu compartilhe o que você publicou,

I think that the change in Facebook's algorithm, which allows me to share what you posted,

e todo mundo que me segue, ou um percentual das pessoas que me seguem vejam o que eu publiquei, e assim sucessivamente,

and everyone who follows me, or a percentage of the people who follow me see what I posted, and so on,

faz com que a rede fique mais, vamos dizer assim, linkada, hiperlinkada.

it makes the network more, let's say, linked, hyperlinked.

E aí alguns temas relevantes, vamos dizer assim, socialmente relevantes, começaram a ganhar repercussão nacional, né,

And then some relevant themes, let's say, socially relevant, started to gain national repercussion, right?

deixaram de ser uma coisa localizada, pra ser uma coisa que ganha repercussão nacional e que interpela as pessoas.

They ceased to be a localized thing to become something that gains national repercussions and challenges people.

Eu acho que não só eu, como muitas pessoas entenderam que as redes eram um espaço da gente conseguir fazer denúncias,

I think that not only I, but many people understood that social networks were a space for us to make complaints,

fazer construções, fazer ações.

make constructions, take actions.

E aí, a cada momento, as redes foram experimentadas de alguma forma, e a cada forma nova dessa, a gente foi descobrindo pra que ela pode servir mais.

And then, at every moment, the networks were experimented with in some way, and with each new form of that, we discovered what else it could be used for.

Tipo assim, a gente foi descobrindo uma dilatação da utilidade das redes, como, por exemplo, agora são as lives, né.

Like this, we started discovering an expansion of the utility of networks, like, for example, now there are live streams, right.

A gente teve as manifestações, que passaram a ser convocadas pelas redes, então, saiu da polêmica, veio as manifestações, tem as lives.

We had the protests, which started to be organized through social media, so it moved away from the controversy, the protests came, and there are the live streams.

Então, enfim, existe uma série de elementos, assim, que vão fazendo com que a rede complete a dinâmica, né.

So, in the end, there are a series of elements that make the network complete the dynamics, right?

A dinâmica da nossa construção da sociedade, né.

The dynamics of our society building, right?

E aí, foi nesse momento que eu entendi que dava pra poder a gente construir, a partir das redes, uma série de disputas na sociedade.

And that was the moment I understood that we could build, through networks, a series of disputes in society.

Nossa, é muito interessante essa parte.

É bem legal a gente perceber de onde que tudo surgiu, assim.

Você acha que as redes sociais ajudaram na criação das discussões que você busca trazer sobre as causas LGBT e antirracista?

Do you think that social media has helped in creating the discussions you seek to bring about LGBT and anti-racist causes?

Você acha que a internet...

Do you think that the internet...

Vem como aliada à sua militância?

Does it come as an ally to your activism?

Olha só, eu acho que a internet, ela é um dado da realidade, sabe?

Look, I think the internet is a fact of reality, you know?

Que invadiu a dinâmica de vida da sociedade, tipo assim.

That invaded the dynamics of life in society, like this.

Então, ela deu espaço pra que a gente pudesse aprofundar o debate LGBT, o debate antirracista, o debate sobre o direito das mulheres.

So, she made room for us to deepen the LGBT debate, the anti-racist debate, and the debate on women's rights.

Mas também deu voz à galera que constrói uma narrativa contrária, né.

But it also gave a voice to the crowd that builds a opposing narrative, right?

Então, desde o Orkut, que eu vejo coisas como as que hoje ganham...

So, since Orkut, I've been seeing things like the ones that win today...

Ganham reverberação nos grupos da família, sabe?

They gain reverberation in the family groups, you know?

Eu lembro que no Orkut tinha umas comunidades, assim, homens de bem.

I remember that on Orkut there were some communities like that, good men.

E aí, outro dia, eu tava vendo os documentos da CPMI, da SIC News, e aí tem um áudio que a Joyce Hasselman leva naquela apresentação que ela fez.

So, the other day, I was looking at the documents from the CPMI, from SIC News, and there's an audio where Joyce Hasselman speaks during that presentation she gave.

Um áudio de um cara dizendo assim, nós estamos nessa desde 2005, você acha que o nosso público vai topar isso e tal?

An audio of a guy saying, "We've been at this since 2005, do you think our audience is going to go for this and so on?"

Ele tá falando do Orkut, ele tá falando daquele tempo.

He's talking about Orkut, he's talking about that time.

Então, essa galera também ganhou voz a partir disso, entendeu?

So, these people also gained a voice from that, you understand?

Então, é um processo que, vamos dizer assim...

So, it's a process that, let's say...

Ele acaba refletindo também o senso da sociedade, né.

It also ends up reflecting the sense of society, doesn’t it?

Em disputa constantemente, dando mais possibilidades pra quem melhor articula e sabe usar os algoritmos, os algoritmos das redes, né.

In constant dispute, giving more opportunities to those who articulate better and know how to use the algorithms, the algorithms of the networks, right?

Deu espaço pra gente, mas também deu espaço pra essa galera aí, que é idiota, que é fascista, entendeu?

Gave space for us, but also gave space to those people there, who are idiots, who are fascists, you understand?

E que se coloca em cima de medidas.

And that is placed on top of measures.

Então, ela tem esse, vamos dizer assim, essa complexidade.

So, she has this, let's say, this complexity.

Ela tá em disputa ainda, e a gente precisa conseguir imprimir dentro das redes algum tipo de...

She is still in competition, and we need to be able to establish some kind of...

De controle, né.

Out of control, right.

Porque...

Because...

Enfim, existem muitos ataques ainda.

In short, there are still many attacks.

Ataques às vidas, ataques pesados.

Attacks on lives, heavy attacks.

E as redes sociais são espaços onde essas pessoas também se manifestam, entendeu?

And social networks are spaces where these people also express themselves, you understand?

Eu queria entender como você enxerga o ativismo na internet atualmente.

I wanted to understand how you see activism on the internet currently.

Em todo...

Throughout...

No contexto coronavírus e no contexto sem coronavírus.

In the context of coronavirus and in the context without coronavirus.

E como você trabalha pra que a sua militância não seja enxergada como o que a gente vê por aí.

And how do you work so that your activism is not seen as what we see out there?

E que a gente chama de ativismo de sofá.

And what we call couch activism.

Então, aquela pessoa que, pelas redes sociais, manda aqueles textões, né.

So, that person who sends those long texts on social media, right?

Os textões do Twitter, do Instagram.

The long texts from Twitter, from Instagram.

Mas, na prática, não faz o que fala o seu ativismo.

But, in practice, it does not do what its activism advocates.

Então, a gente tá falando do ciberativismo, que é justamente a gente mobilizar essas pessoas.

So, we are talking about cyber activism, which is precisely about mobilizing these people.

Através das redes sociais, pra uma ação concreta.

Through social media, for concrete action.

Então, eu queria entender como você vê isso.

So, I wanted to understand how you see this.

E como você faz pra que...

And how do you do to...

Faz com que as pessoas entendam que você tá fazendo uma ação, de fato.

It makes people understand that you are actually taking action.

E que seu ativismo vai além das redes, assim.

And that your activism goes beyond social media, like that.

Olha, veja bem.

Look, see well.

Eu acho que o que fala mais sobre a gente são as práticas que a gente tem.

I believe that what speaks the most about us are the practices we have.

Pra além de qualquer coisa que a gente diga, sabe?

Beyond anything we say, you know?

Porque, assim, só tem um caminho pra eu conseguir interpretar.

Because, this way, there is only one way for me to manage to interpret.

Se aquilo que a pessoa tá dizendo é verdade ou é mentira, é com as práticas dela, entendeu?

Whether what the person is saying is true or false depends on their actions, you understand?

Então, quando o Bolsonaro diz que ele não é contra a comunidade LGBT.

So, when Bolsonaro says that he is not against the LGBT community.

E, na prática, ele exclui o Conselho Nacional de Discriminação contra o Preconceito LGBT.

And, in practice, it excludes the National Council for Discrimination against LGBT Prejudice.

Sabe, ele exclui a sigla LGBT.

You know, he excludes the LGBT acronym.

Ele tá mostrando que, na prática, não é bem assim, entendeu?

He is showing that, in practice, it’s not quite like that, got it?

Então, particularmente, eu vim de uma história de muita ação.

So, particularly, I come from a background of a lot of action.

De militância de rua, de construção, do movimento estudantil.

From street activism, construction, of the student movement.

Escrevi uma lei chamada Lei do Renascimento.

I wrote a law called the Law of Rebirth.

Essa lei ficou quase dois anos...

This law took almost two years...

Mais de dois anos e meio, na realidade, pra ser aprovada.

More than two and a half years, in fact, to be approved.

Envolveu uma articulação profunda.

It involved a deep articulation.

Porque a casa tem 41 vereadores, cujos, pelo menos, 16 são da bancada...

Because the house has 41 councilors, of which at least 16 are from the bench...

O que eles chamam de bancada do templo, aqui.

What they call the temple bench, here.

Que reúne católicos e protestantes.

That brings together Catholics and Protestants.

Protestantes não, né?

Not Protestants, right?

Alguns fundamentalistas.

Some fundamentalists.

E também tem oportunistas no meio.

And there are also opportunists in the midst.

Mas, enfim, faz parte.

But, anyway, it’s part of it.

Enfim, isso envolveu...

Com certeza.

Isso, como é que diz?

Envolveu uma articulação.

Envolveu uma articulação muito grande pra gente conseguir aprovar uma lei

que trate de defesa da comunidade LGBT dentro da cidade.

that deals with the defense of the LGBT community within the city.

E, enfim, tem a torcida, que também é uma ação concreta.

And, finally, there is the cheering, which is also a concrete action.

É uma ação que as pessoas veem.

It's an action that people see.

Então, as redes acabam sendo um pouco de divulgação do que eu faço no cotidiano, entendeu?

So, the networks end up being a bit of a showcase of what I do in my daily life, you know?

Eu não tenho muita paciência pra testão.

I don’t have much patience for long tests.

Eu não tenho muita paciência pra muita conversa, muita tese, assim.

I don't have much patience for too much talk, too many theories, like that.

Porque eu acho que, na realidade, o que a gente quer fazer

Because I think that, in reality, what we want to do

precisa que a gente tenha duas coisas, assim, sabe?

We need to have two things, you know?

É uma capacidade de conseguir articular, entendeu?

It's a ability to articulate, you understand?

E a outra é de efetivar.

And the other one is to execute.

É ir lá e botar a mão, entendeu?

It's about going there and getting hands-on, you got it?

E fazer, e ver no que vai dar.

And do it, and see what will come of it.

E esperar, e correr atrás, e falar disso, e acreditar, entendeu?

And to wait, and to chase after, and to talk about it, and to believe, you understand?

Então, eu acho que são essas duas coisas que fazem com que a gente transforme a militância

So, I think these are the two things that make us transform activism.

em algo que é real, que é concreto, entendeu?

in something that is real, that is concrete, understood?

Você pode até ser alguém que a principal articulação sua é nas redes.

You might even be someone whose main connection is through social media.

Mas aí tem que ter um, vamos dizer assim...

But then there has to be a, let's say...

Algum efeito. Isso precisa produzir algum efeito concreto, entendeu?

Some effect. This needs to produce some concrete effect, understood?

Então, por exemplo, um cara como o Felipe Neto, que é um cara das redes,

So, for example, a guy like Felipe Neto, who is a guy from social media,

ele produz efeitos concretos quando ele se posiciona.

He produces concrete effects when he takes a stand.

Porque ele é um cara que consegue atingir 40, 50 milhões de pessoas com vídeo.

Isso não é uma capacidade que todo mundo tem.

e é dependendo do tamanho do estado, dez estados brasileiros ali, entendeu?

Então, é bem complexo isso.

That transforms people's lives, that affects people's lives,

que não influencia só aquele nicho que você está dialogando ali, entendeu?

that doesn't only influence that niche you are engaging with, understood?

Porque é um saco, um monte de textão, entendeu?

Because it's a drag, a bunch of long text, you know?

Enfim, em relação à política do cancelamento,

Finally, regarding cancel culture,

que geralmente faz essas coisas aí, usa muito, entendeu?

That usually does these things, uses it a lot, you know?

Usa muito.

Use a lot.

Então, é bem complexo.

So, it's quite complex.

Eu respeito a forma de cada um de atuar, de militar,

I respect the way each one acts, of advocating,

mas eu tenho a minha e a minha não é muito de ficar no sofá, não.

But I have mine, and mine is not really one to stay on the couch.

É dessas que a gente precisa, no fim, né?

enfim, fazendo com que ele não conseguisse respirar,

finally, causing him not to be able to breathe,

então, houve muitas críticas para que a gente parasse de reproduzir isso

So, there was a lot of criticism for us to stop reproducing that.

and focus on other things, like that.

Então, eu queria entender como você lida, assim,

até como comunicador, como você lida com esses entraves, assim,

Olha só, eu acho que a gente tem que ter filtro, lógico.

e esse filtro precisa ser valorizado,

valorizado a partir de alguns valores, entendeu?

Eu vou dar um exemplo assim, para poder ser mais prático.

Quando eu fundei a Torcida LGBTriculô, eu sofri várias ameaças

e eu não falei sobre isso, entendeu?

eu procurei pessoas que pudessem me orientar

I looked for people who could guide me.

sobre como é que eu deveria agir, as pessoas achavam que

que ela estava me ameaçando e isso saísse na imprensa,

Porque isso ia encorajar a galera

Because that would encourage the crowd.

a tentar me pressionar e recuar.

Quando eu não fiz isso, entendeu?

Quem, eventualmente, estava também

Who, eventually, was also

nesse ímpeto de fazer qualquer tipo de ameaça,

in this impulse to make any kind of threat,
